Due to the influence of deep-sea environment,deep-sea sediments are usually heterogeneous, and their moduli of elasticity and density change as depth changes.Combined with the characteristics of deep-sea sediments, the thermo-hydro-mechanical coupling dynamic response model of heterogeneous saturated porous sediments can be established to study the influence of elastic modulus, density, frequency, and load amplitude changes on the model.Based on the Green-Lindsay generalized thermoelasticity theory and Darcy’s law,the thermo-hydro-mechanical coupled dynamic response model and governing equations of heterogeneous deep-sea sediments with nonlinear elastic modulus and density are established. The analytical solutions of dimensionless vertical displacement, vertical stress, excess pore water pressure, and temperature are obtained by means of normal modal analysis, which are depicted graphically. The results show that the changes of elastic modulus and density have few effects on vertical displacement, vertical stress, and temperature, but have great effects on excess pore water pressure. When the mining machine vibrates, the heterogeneity of deep-sea sediments has great influence on vertical displacement, vertical stress, and excess pore water pressure, but has few effects on temperature. In addition, the vertical displacement, vertical stress, and excess pore water pressure of heterogeneous deep-sea sediments change more gently. The variation trends of physical quantities for heterogeneous and homogeneous deep-sea sediments with frequency and load amplitude are basically the same. The results can provide theoretical guidance for deep-sea mining engineering construction. 展开更多

In examining potential host rocks for such purposes as the disposal of high-level radioactive wastes,it is important to understand the coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical(THM) behavior of a porous medium.A rigorous and fully unified coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical model for unsaturated porous media is required to simulate the complex coupling mechanisms involved.Based on modified Darcy's and Fourier's laws, equations of mechanical equilibrium, mass conservation and energy conservation are derived by introducing void ratio and volumetric liquid water content into the model. The newly derived model takes into account the effects of temperature on the dynamic viscosity of liquid water and void ratio, the influence of liquid flow on temperature gradient(thermo-osmosis),the influence on mass and heat conservation equations, and the influence of heat flow on water pressure gradient and thermal convection. The new coupled THM constitutive model is constructed by a finite element program and is used to simulate the coupled behavior of a tunnel during excavation, ventilation and concrete lining stages.Oil and gas engineering, underground disposal of nuclear waste and tunnel engineering may be benefited from the development of the new model. 展开更多

As one of the most important ways to reduce the greenhouse gas emission, carbon dioxide(CO2)enhanced gas recovery(CO2-EGR) is attractive since the gas recovery can be enhanced simultaneously with CO2sequestration.Based on the existing equation of state(EOS) module of TOUGH2 MP,extEOS7C is developed to calculate the phase partition of H2O-CO2-CH4-NaCl mixtures accurately with consideration of dissolved NaCI and brine properties at high pressure and temperature conditions.Verifications show that it can be applied up to the pressure of 100 MPa and temperature of 150℃.The module was implemented in the linked simulator TOUGH2MP-FLAC3 D for the coupled hydro-mechanical simulations.A simplified three-dimensional(3D)1/4 model(2.2 km×1 km×1 km) which consists of the whole reservoir, caprock and baserock was generated based on the geological conditions of a gas field in the North German Basin. The simulation results show that, under an injection rate of 200,000 t/yr and production rate of 200,000 sm3/d,CO2breakthrough occurred in the case with the initial reservoir pressure of 5 MPa but did not occur in the case of 42 MPa.Under low pressure conditions, the pressure driven horizontal transport is the dominant process;while under high pressure conditions, the density driven vertical flow is dominant.Under the considered conditions, the CO2-EGR caused only small pressure changes. The largest pore pressure increase(2 MPa) and uplift(7 mm) occurred at the caprock bottom induced by only CO2injection.The caprock had still the primary stress state and its integrity was not affected. The formation water salinity and temperature variations of ±20℃ had small influences on the CO2-EGR process. In order to slow down the breakthrough,it is suggested that CO2-EGR should be carried out before the reservoir pressure drops below the critical pressure of CO2. 展开更多

Geo-energy and geo-engineering applications, such as improved oil recovery(IOR),geologic carbon storage, and enhanced geothermal systems(EGSs),involve coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical(THM)processes that result from fluid injection and production. In some cases, reservoirs are highly fractured and the geomechanical response is controlled by fractures. Therefore, fractures should explicitly be included into numerical models to realistically simulate the THM responses of the subsurface. In this study,we perform coupled THM numerical simulations of water injection into naturally fractured reservoirs(NFRs)using CODE_BRIGHT and TOUGH-UDEC codes.CODE_BRIGHT is a finite element method(FEM)code that performs fully coupled THM analysis in geological media and TOUGH-UDEC sequentially solves coupled THM processes by combining a finite volume method(FVM)code that solves nonisothermal multiphase flow(TOUGH2)with a distinct element method(DEM)code that solves the mechanical problem(UDEC).First,we validate the two codes against a semi-analytical solution for water injection into a single deformable fracture considering variable permeability based on the cubic law. Then,we compare simulation results of the two codes in an idealized conceptual model that includes one horizontal fracture and in a more realistic model with multiple fractures. Each code models fractures differently.UDEC calculates fracture deformation from the fracture normal and shear stiffnesses, while CODE_BRIGHT treats fractures as equivalent porous media and uses the equivalent Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio of the fracture. Finally,we obtain comparable results of pressure, temperature, stress and displacement distributions and evolutions for the single horizontal fracture model.Despite some similarities, the two codes provide increasingly different results as model complexity increases. These differences highlight the challenging task of accurately modeling coupled THM processes in fractured media given their high nonlinearity. 展开更多

Within the multi-barrier system for high-level waste disposal, the technological gap formed by combined buffer material block becomes the weak part of buffer layer. In this paper,Gaomiaozi bentonite buffer material with technological gap was studied, the heat transfer induced by liquid water flow and water vapor was embedded into the energy conservation equation.Based on the Barcelona basic model, the coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical model of unsaturated bentonite was established by analyzing the swelling process of bentonite block and the compression process of joint material. The China-Mock-up test was adopted to compare the numerical calculation results with the test results so as to verify the rationality of the proposed model. On this basis, the effect of joint self-healing on dry density, thermal conductivity and permeability coefficient of buffer material was further analyzed. The results show that, with bentonite hydrating and swelling, the joint material gradually increases in dry density, and exhibits comparatively uniform hydraulic and thermal conductivity properties as compacted bentonite block. As a result, the buffer material gradually shifts to homogenization due to the coordinated deformation. 展开更多

A coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical-migratory model of dual-porosity medium for saturated-unsaturated ubiquitous-joint rockmass was established,in which the stress field and the temperature field were single, but the seepage field and the concentration field were double, and the influences of sets, spaces, angles, continuity ratios, stiffnesses of fractures on the constitutive relationship of the medium were considered. Also, the relative two-dimensional program of finite element method was developed.Taking a hypothetical nuclear waste repository as a calculation example, the case in which the rockmass was unsaturated dual-porosity medium and radioactive nuclide leak was simulated numerically, and the temperatures, negative pore pressures, saturations, flow velocities, nuclide concentrations and principal stresses in the rockmass were investigated. The results show that the negative pore pressures and nuclide concentrations in the porosity and fracture present different changes and distributions.Even though the saturation degree in porosity is only about 1/10 that in fracture, the flow velocity of underground water in fracture is about three times that in porosity because the permeability coefficient of fracture is almost four orders higher than that of porosity. The value of nuclide concentration in fracture is close to that in porosity. 展开更多

This paper analyzes a coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical behavior of unsaturated soils based on the theory of mixtures. Unsaturated soil is considered as a mixture composed of soil skeleton, liquid water, vapor, dry air, and dissolved air. In addition to the mass and momentum conservation equations of each component and the energy conservation equation of the mixture, the system is closed using other 37 constitutive (or restriction) equations. As the change in water chemical potential is identical to the change in vapor chemical potential, a thermodynamic restriction relationship for the phase transition between pore water and pore vapor is formulated, in which the impact of the change in gas pressure on the phase transition is taken into account. Six final govern- ing equations are given in incremental form in terms of six primary variables, i.e., three displacement components of soil skeleton, water pressure, gas pressure, and temperature. The processes involved in the coupled model include thermal expansions of soil skeleton and soil particle, Soret effect, phase transition between water and vapor, air dissolution in pore water, and deformation of soil skeleton. 展开更多

Artificial freezing of water-bearing soil layers composing a sedimentary deposit can induce frost heave and water migration that affect the natural stress-strain state of the soil layers and freezing process. In the present paper,a thermo-hydro-mechanical(THM)model for freezing of water-saturated soil is proposed to study the effects of frost heave and water migration in frozen soils on the formation of a frozen wall and subsequent excavation activity for sinking a vertical shaft. The governing equations of the model are formulated relative to porosity, temperature, and displacement which are considered as primary variables. The relationship between temperature, pore water, and ice pressure in frozen soil is established by the Clausius-Clapeyron equation, whereas the interaction between the stress-strain behavior and changes in porosity and pore pressure is described with the poromechanics theory. Moreover, constitutive relations for additional mechanical deformation are incorporated to describe volumetric expansion of soil during freezing as well as creep strain of soil in the frozen state. The ability of the proposed model to capture the frost heave of frozen soil is demonstrated by a comparison between numerical results and experimental data given by a one-sided freezing test. Also to validate the model in other freezing conditions,a radial freezing experiment is performed. After the validation procedure, the model is applied to numerical simulation of artificial freezing of silt and sand layers for shaft sinking at Petrikov potash mine in Belarus.Comparison of calculated temperature with thermal monitoring data during active freezing stage is presented.Numerical analysis of deformation of unsupported sidewall of a shaft inside the frozen wall is conducted to account for the change in natural stress-strain state of soil layers induced by artificial freezing. 展开更多

The excessive deformation of deep-sea sediments caused by the vibration of the mining machine will adversely affect the efficiency and safety of mining.Combined with the deep-sea environment, the coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical problem for saturated porous deep-sea sediments subject to the vibration of the mining vehicle is investigated.Based on the Green-Lindsay(G-L)generalized thermoelastic theory and Darcy’s law,the model of thermo-hydro-mechanical dynamic responses for saturated porous deep-sea sediments under the vibration of the mining vehicle is established. We obtain the analytical solutions of non-dimensional vertical displacement, excess pore water pressure, vertical stress, temperature, and change in the volume fraction field with the normal mode analysis method, and depict them graphically. The normal mode analysis method uses the canonical coordinate transformation to solve the equation, which can quickly decouple the equation by ignoring the modal coupling effect on the basis of the canonical mode. The results indicate that the vibration frequency has obvious influence on the vertical displacement, excess pore water pressure, vertical stress, and change in volume fraction field. The loading amplitude has a great effect on the physical quantities in the foundation, and the changes of the physical quantities increase with the increase in loading amplitude. 展开更多

In order to consider the influence of temperature and underground water movement, an elastoplastic model and a 2D FEM stress fields on the migration of radioactive nuclide with code for analysis of coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) processes in saturated and unsaturated porous media were extended and improved through introducing the percolation and migration equation, so that the code can be used for solving the temperature field, flow field, stress field and nuclide concentration field simultaneously. The states of temperatures, pore pressures and nuclide concentrations in the near field of a hypothetical nuclear waste repository were investigated. The influence of the half life of the radioactive nuclide on the temporal change of nuclide concentration was analyzed considering the thermo-hydro-mechanical-migratory coupling. The results show that, at the boundary of the vitrified waste, the concentration of radioactive nuclide with a half life of 10 a falls after a period of rising, with the maximum value of 0.182 mol/m3 and the minimum value of 0.181 mol/m^3 at the end of computation. For a half life of 1 000 a, the concentration of radioactive nuclide always increases with the increase of the time during the computation period; and the maximum value is 1.686 mol/m^3 at the end of the computation. Therefore, under the condition of THM coupling, the concentration of radioactive nuclide with a shorter half life will decrease more quickly with water flow; but for the radioactive nuclide with a longer half life, its concentration will keep at a higher level for a longer time in the migration process. 展开更多

A large number of nanopores and complex fracture structures in shale reservoirs results in multi-scale flow of oil. With the development of shale oil reservoirs, the permeability of multi-scale media undergoes changes due to stress sensitivity, which plays a crucial role in controlling pressure propagation and oil flow. This paper proposes a multi-scale coupled flow mathematical model of matrix nanopores, induced fractures, and hydraulic fractures. In this model, the micro-scale effects of shale oil flow in fractal nanopores, fractal induced fracture network, and stress sensitivity of multi-scale media are considered. We solved the model iteratively using Pedrosa transform, semi-analytic Segmented Bessel function, Laplace transform. The results of this model exhibit good agreement with the numerical solution and field production data, confirming the high accuracy of the model. As well, the influence of stress sensitivity on permeability, pressure and production is analyzed. It is shown that the permeability and production decrease significantly when induced fractures are weakly supported. Closed induced fractures can inhibit interporosity flow in the stimulated reservoir volume (SRV). It has been shown in sensitivity analysis that hydraulic fractures are beneficial to early production, and induced fractures in SRV are beneficial to middle production. The model can characterize multi-scale flow characteristics of shale oil, providing theoretical guidance for rapid productivity evaluation. 展开更多

The study presents a comprehensive coupled thermo-bio-chemo-hydraulic(T-BCH)modeling framework for stabilizing soils using microbially induced calcite precipitation(MICP).The numerical model considers relevant multiphysics involved in MICP,such as bacterial ureolytic activities, biochemical reactions, multiphase and multicomponent transport, and alteration of the porosity and permeability. The model incorporates multiphysical coupling effects through well-established constitutive relations that connect parameters and variables from different physical fields. It was implemented in the open-source finite element code OpenGeoSys(OGS),and a semi-staggered solution strategy was designed to solve the couplings, allowing for flexible model settings. Therefore, the developed model can be easily adapted to simulate MICP applications in different scenarios. The numerical model was employed to analyze the effect of various factors, including temperature, injection strategies, and application scales.Besides,a TBCH modeling study was conducted on the laboratory-scale domain to analyze the effects of temperature on urease activity and precipitated calcium carbonate. To understand the scale dependency of MICP treatment,a large-scale heterogeneous domain was subjected to variable biochemical injection strategies. The simulations conducted at the field-scale guided the selection of an injection strategy to achieve the desired type and amount of precipitation.Additionally, the study emphasized the potential of numerical models as reliable tools for optimizing future developments in field-scale MICP treatment. The present study demonstrates the potential of this numerical framework for designing and optimizing the MICP applications in laboratory-,prototype-,and field-scale scenarios. 展开更多

Nonlinearly induced steady-state photon–phonon entanglement of a dissipative coupled system is studied in the bistable regime. Quantum dynamical characteristics are analysed by solving the mean-field and fluctuation equations of the system. It is shown that dissipative coupling can induce bistable behaviour for the effective dissipation of the system.Under suitable parameters, one of the steady states significantly reduces the dissipative effect of the system. Consequently,a larger steady-state entanglement can be achieved compared to linear dynamics. Furthermore, the experimental feasibility of the parameters is analysed. Our results provide a new perspective for the implementation of steady-state optomechanical entanglement. 展开更多

Replaceable flexural and shear fuse-type coupling beams are used in hybrid coupled shear wall(HCSW)systems, enabling concrete buildings to be promptly recovered after severe earthquakes. This study aimed to analytically evaluate the seismic behavior of flexural and shear fuse beams situated in short-,medium-and high-rise RC buildings that have HCSWs.Three building groups hypothetically located in a high seismic hazard zone were studied.A series of 2D nonlinear time history analyses was accomplished in OpenSees, using the ground motion records scaled at the design basis earthquake level. It was found that the effectiveness of fuses in HCSWs depends on various factors such as size and scale of the building, allowable rotation value,inter-story drift ratio, residual drift quantity, energy dissipation value of the fuses, etc. The results show that shear fuses better meet the requirements of rotations and drifts. In contrast, flexural fuses dissipate more energy, but their sectional stiffness should increase to meet other requirements. It was concluded that adoption of proper fuses depends on the overall scale of the building and on how associated factors are considered. 展开更多

This study investigates the dynamical behaviors of nearest neighbor asymmetric coupled systems in a confined space.First, the study derivative analytical stability and synchronization conditions for the asymmetrically coupled system in an unconfined space, which are then validated through numerical simulations. Simulation results show that asymmetric coupling has a significant impact on synchronization conditions. Moreover, it is observed that irrespective of whether the system is confined, an increase in coupling asymmetry leads to a hastened synchronization pace. Additionally, the study examines the effects of boundaries on the system's collective behaviors via numerical experiments. The presence of boundaries ensures the system's stability and synchronization, and reducing these boundaries can expedite the synchronization process and amplify its effects. Finally, the study reveals that the system's output amplitude exhibits stochastic resonance as the confined boundary size increases. 展开更多

Deep shale gas reservoirs have geological characteristics of high temperature, high pressure, high stress, and inferior ability to pass through fluids. The multi-stage fractured horizontal well is the key to exploiting the deep shale gas reservoir. However, during the production process, the effectiveness of the hydraulic fracture network decreases with the closure of fractures, which accelerates the decline of shale gas production. In this paper,we addressed the problems of unclear fracture closure mechanisms and low accuracy of shale gas production prediction during deep shale gas production. Then we established the fluid—solid—heat coupled model coupling the deformation and fluid flow among the fracture surface, proppant and the shale matrix. When the fluid—solid—heat coupled model was applied to the fracture network,it was well solved by our numerical method named discontinuous discrete fracture method.Compared with the conventional discrete fracture method, the discontinuous discrete fracture method can describe the three-dimensional morphology of the fracture while considering the effect of the change of fracture surface permeation coefficient on the coupled fracture—matrix flow and describing the displacement discontinuity across the fracture.Numerical simulations revealed that the degree of fracture closure increases as the production time proceeds, and the degree of closure of the secondary fractures is higher than that of the primary fractures.Shale creep and proppant embedment both increase the degree of fracture closure. The reduction in fracture surface permeability due to proppant embedment reduces the rate of fluid transfer between matrix and fracture, which has often been overlooked in the past. However,it significantly impacts shale gas production, with calculations showing a 24.7%cumulative three-year yield reduction. This study is helpful to understand the mechanism of hydraulic fracture closure. Therefore,it provides the theoretical guidance for maintaining the long-term effectiveness of hydraulic fractures. 展开更多

A two-dimensional fluid model based on COMSOL Multiphysics is developed to investigate the modulation of static magnetic field on plasma homogeneity in a capacitively coupled plasma(CCP)chamber. To generate a static magnetic field, direct current is applied to a circular coil located at the top of the chamber. By adjusting the magnetic field's configuration, which is done by altering the coil current and position, both the plasma uniformity and density can be significantly modulated. In the absence of the magnetic field, the plasma density exhibits an inhomogeneous distribution characterized by higher values at the plasma edge and lower values at the center. The introduction of a magnetic field generated by coils results in a significant increase in electron density near the coils. Furthermore, an increase in the sets of coils improves the uniformity of the plasma. By flexibly adjusting the positions of the coils and the applied current,a substantial enhancement in overall uniformity can be achieved. These findings demonstrate the feasibility of using this method for achieving uniform plasma densities in industrial applications. 展开更多

In this paper, a three-dimensional electric field coupled hippocampal neural network is established to investigate generation of coexisting spontaneous fast and slow traveling waves. This model captures two types of dendritic traveling waves propagating in both transverse and longitude directions: the N-methyl-D-aspartate(NMDA)-dependent wave with a speed of about 0.1 m/s and the Ca-dependent wave with a speed of about 0.009 m/s. These traveling waves are synaptic-independent and could be conducted only by the electric fields generated by neighboring neurons, which are basically consistent with the in vitro data measured experiments. It is also found that the slow Ca wave could trigger generation of fast NMDA waves in the propagation path of slow waves whereas fast NMDA waves cannot affect the propagation of slow Ca waves. These results suggest that dendritic Ca waves could acted as the source of the coexistence fast and slow waves. Furthermore, we also confirm the impact of cellular spacing heterogeneity on the onset of coexisting fast and slow waves. The local region with decreasing distances among neighbor neurons is more liable to promote the onset of spontaneous slow waves which, as sources, excite propagation of fast waves. These modeling studies provide possible biophysical mechanisms underlying the neural dynamics of spontaneous traveling waves in brain tissues. 展开更多
