The infrared radiation temperature(IRT)variation concerning stress and crack evolution of rocks is a critical focus in rock mechanics domain and engineering disaster warning. In this paper,a methodology to extract the key IRT features related to stress and crack evolution of loaded rocks is proposed.Specifically, the wavelet denoising and reconstruction in thermal image sequence(WDRTIS)method is employed to eliminate temporal noise in thermal image sequences.Subsequently, the adaptive partition temperature drift correction(APTDC)method is introduced to alleviate temperature drift. On this basis, the spatial noise correction method based on threshold segmentation and adaptive median filtering(OTSU-AMF)is proposed to extract the key IRT features associated with microcracks of loaded rocks.Following temperature drift correction,IRT provides an estimation of the thermoelastic factor in rocks, typically around 5.29×10^(-5) MPa^(-1) for sandstones. Results reveal that the high-temperature concentrated region in cumulative thermal images of crack evolution(TICE)can elucidate the spatiotemporal evolution of localized damage.Additionally, heat dissipation of crack evolution(HDCE)acquired from TICE quantifies the progressive failure process of rocks. The proposed methodology enhances the reliability of IRT monitoring results and provides an innovative approach for conducting research in rock mechanics and monitoring engineering disasters. 展开更多

To investigate the mechanism of rockburst prevention by spraying water onto the surrounding rocks,15 experiments are performed considering different water absorption levels on a single face.High-speed photography and acoustic emission(AE)system are used to monitor the rockburst process. The effect of water on sandstone rockburst and the prevention mechanism of water on sandstone rockburst are analyzed from the perspective of energy and failure mode. The results show that the higher the ab-sorption degree, the lower the intensity of the rockburst after absorbing water on single side of sand-stone.This is reflected in the fact that with the increase in the water absorption level, the ejection velocity of rockburst fragments is smaller, the depth of the rockburst pit is shallower, and the AE energy is smaller.Under the water absorption level of 100%,the magnitude of rockburst intensity changes from medium to slight. The prevention mechanism of water on sandstone rockburst is that water reduces the capacity of sandstone to store strain energy and accelerates the expansion of shear cracks, which is not conducive to the occurrence of plate cracking before rockburst, and destroys the conditions for rockburst incubation. 展开更多

The matrix crack evolution of cross-ply ceramic matrix composites under uniaxial tensile loading is investigated using the energy balance method.Under tensile loading, the cross-ply ceramic matrix composites have five damage modes. The cracking mode 3 contains transverse cracking, matrix cracking and fiber/matrix interface debonding. The cracking mode 5 only contains matrix cracking and fiber/matrix interface debonding. The cracking stress of modes 3 and 5 appearing between existing transverse cracks is determined. And the multiple matrix crack evolution of mode 3 is determined. The effects of ply thickness, fiber volume fraction, interface shear stress and interface debonding energy on the cracking stress and matrix crack evolution are analyzed. Results indicate that the cracking mode 3 is more likely to appear between transverse cracks for the SiC/CAS material. 展开更多

In order to study the evolution laws during the development process of the coal face overburden rock mining-induced fissure,we studied the process of evolution of overburden rock mining-induced fissures and dynamically quantitatively described its fractal laws, based on the high-precision microseismic monitoring method and the nonlinear Fractal Geometry Theory. The results show that:the overburden rock mining-induced fissure fractal dimension experiences two periodic change processes with the coal face advance, namely a Small→ Big→ Small process, which tends to be stable;the functional relationship between the extraction step distance and the overburden rock mining-induced fissure fractal dimension is a cubic curve. The results suggest that the fractal dimension reflects the evolution characteristics of the overburden rock mining-induced fissure, which can be used as an evaluation index of the stability of the overburden rock strata, and it provides theoretical guidance for stability analysis of the overburden rock strata, goaf roof control and the support movements in the mining face. 展开更多

Tight reservoirs are typically developed by horizontal wells and multi-stage hydraulic fracturing. The conglomerate reservoir is one type of tight reservoirs, which is different from homogeneous rock, such as tight sandstone. This is because that the existence of gravels makes conglomerate have strong hetero-geneity.Thus,it is difficult to grasp the fracture mechanism and the law of fracture propagation of conglomerate, which limits the efficient development of the conglomerate reservoir. In this paper, the fracture characteristics and factors influencing the fracturing of Mahu conglomerate were studied by uniaxial compression, acoustic emission monitoring and X-ray computed tomography(CT)scanning experiments. The results show that the fracture characteristics of conglomerates are influenced by the gravel content and cement. The conglomerate in the study area is mainly divided into carbonate cemented conglomerate and clay cemented conglomerate. The fracture complexity of carbonate cemented conglomerate first increases and then decreases with increasing gravel content. However, for clay cemented conglomerates, the fracture complexity increases over the gravel content. The crack development stress is a significant parameter in the crack assessment of conglomerates. This study is useful to understand the influence of meso-fabric characteristics of conglomerates on their fracturing and crack evolution and guides the design of hydraulic fracturing. 展开更多

The initial micro-cracks affect the evolution characteristics of macroscopic deformation and failure of rock but are often ignored in theoretical calculation, numerical simulation, and mechanical experiments. In this study,we propose a quantitative analysis model to investigate the effects of initial micro-cracks on the evolution of marble deformation and failure. The relationship between the micro-crack propagation and the marble failure characteristics was comprehensively studied by combining theoretical analysis with a micro-computed tomography(micro-CT)scanning technique. We found that with the increase of confining pressure, the matrix elastic modulus of the marble first increased and then tended to be stable, while the micro-cracks increased exponentially. The sensitivity ranges of the marble sample matrix elastic modulus and micro-cracks to confining pressure were 0–30 MPa and 30–50 MPa,respectively. The porosity and Poisson’s ratio decreased exponentially. The increasing proportion of internal micro-cracks led to an increase in the sample non-uniformity.The samples presented mainly shear failure under triaxial compression, and the failure angle decreased linearly with the increase of confining pressure. The convergence direction of cracks decreased gradually. This quantitative analysis model could accurately portray the relationship between the overall macroscopic deformation and the deviatoric stress of the samples at the compaction and the linear elastic stages, thus deepening the understanding of the stress–strain behavior of rocks. 展开更多

In order to investigate the micro-process and inner mechanism of rock failure under impact loading, the laboratory tests were carried out on an improved split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) system with synchronized measurement devices including a high-speed camera and a dynamic strain meter. The experimental results show that the specimens were in the state of good stress equilibrium during the post failure stage even when visible cracks were forming in the specimens. Rock specimens broke into strips but still could bear the external stress and keep force balance. Meanwhile, numerical tests with particle flow code (PFC) revealed that the failure process of rocks can be described by the evolution of micro-fractures. Shear cracks emerged firstly and stopped developing when the external stress was not high enough. Tensile cracks, however, emerged when the rock specimen reached its peak strength and played an important role in controlling the ultimate failure during the post failure stage. 展开更多

According to the distribution of abutment stress in a stope, this research established the mechanical model of mining abutment pressure transmission in floor base on the theory of semi-infnite plate body in elasticity. This study takes the 762 working face of Haizi Coal Mine as a case in point, and analyzed the dynamic evolution law of seam floor stress during the mining process. With an organic combination of the mining floor stress and surrounding rock stress, the study obtained the change laws of the maximum principle stress and the minimum one for the floor roadway surrounding rock when mining the upper working face.Considering the non-constant pressure force state and the cracks revolution mechanisms of floor roadway surrounding rock, the research built the mechanical model of roadway stress.Simulation results verify the reliability of the above conclusions. Moreover, this model could provide the theoretical basis and technical support for controlling floor roadway surrounding rock. 展开更多

Rock is more sensitive to tensile loading than compressive loading, since the tensile strength of rock is much lower than compressive strength. The fracture characteristics of rock in the tensile state are of great significance to the understanding of rock failure mechanisms. To this end,we have conducted numerical simulation researches on modeⅠcracking process of rock with varying homogeneity, using the Realistic Failure Process Analysis program. With the increase of homogeneity, cracks are concentrating to the ligament area with a decreasing number of crack bifurcations, and the main crack path is becoming smooth.Crack behaviors and mechanical properties are influenced significantly when the homogeneity index is in the range of 1.5 to 5.When the homogeneity index is greater than 30,they are not affected by rock homogeneity and the rock can be considered as essentially homogeneous. It is considered that the global and local strengths are affected by the distribution of rock mechanical properties at mesoscale, which influence the crack behaviors and mechanical characteristics. 展开更多

Predicting rock cracking is important for assessing the stability of underground engineering. The effects of the intersecting angle a and the distribution orientation angleβof intersecting fissures on the uniaxial compressive strength and the failure characteristics of sandstone containing intersecting fissures are investigated through laboratory experiments and two-dimensional particle flow code(PFC2D).The relationship between the mechanical properties of sandstone and the intersecting angle a and the distribution orientation angleβis analysed.Crack initiation forms and the final failure modes are then categorised and determined via empirical methods. In addition, the cracking processes of intersecting fissures with different a andβvalues are discussed. The results show that variations in the peak stress, peak strain, average modulus, and crack initiation stress of sandstone containing intersecting fissures show a“moth”shape in the space of the a-β-mechanical parameters. Two crack initiation forms are identified:inner tip cracking(usually accompanied by one outer tip cracking)and only outer tips cracking. Two failure modes are observed:(1)the main fracture planes are created at the inner tip and one outer tip,and(2)the main fracture planes are formed at the two outer tips. Two main crack evolution processes of sandstone containing intersecting fissures under uniaxial compression are found.Approaches for quickly determining the crack initiation form and the failure mode are proposed. The combination of the determination equations for the crack initiation form and the failure mode can be used to predict the crack evolution. The approach for determining the crack evolution processes is hence proposed with acceptable precision. 展开更多

Strength and deformability characteristics of rock with pre-existing fissures are governed by cracking behavior. To further research the effects of pre-existing fissures on the mechanical properties and crack coalescence process, a series of uniaxial compression tests were carried out for rock-like material with two unparallel fissures. In the present study, cement, quartz sand, and water were used to fabricate a kind of brittle rock-like material cylindrical model specimen. The mechanical properties of rock-like material specimen used in this research were all in good agreement with the brittle rock materials. Two unparallel fissures(a horizontal fissure and an inclined fissure) were created by inserting steel during molding the model specimen. Then all the pre-fissured rock-like specimens were tested under uniaxial compression by a rock mechanics servocontrolled testing system. The peak strength and Young's modulus of pre-fissured specimen all first decreased and then increased when the fissure angle increased from 0?to 75?.In order to investigate the crack initiation, propagation and coalescence process, photographic monitoring was adopted to capture images during the entire deformation process. Moreover, acoustic emission(AE) monitoring technique was also used to obtain the AE evolution characteristic of prefissured specimen. The relationship between axial stress, AE events, and the crack coalescence process was set up: when a new crack was initiated or a crack coalescence occurred, thecorresponding axial stress dropped in the axial stress–time curve and a big AE event could be observed simultaneously. Finally, the mechanism of crack propagation under microscopic observation was discussed. These experimental results are expected to increase the understanding of the strength failure behavior and the cracking mechanism of rock containing unparallel fissures. 展开更多

Acoustic emission and digital image correlation were used to study the spatiotemporal evolution characteristics of crack extension of soft and hard composite laminated rock masses(SHCLRM)containing double fissures under uniaxial compression. The effects of different rock combination methods and prefabricated fissures with different orientations on mechanical properties and crack coalescence patterns were analyzed. The characteristics of the acoustic emission source location distribution, and frequency changes of the crack evolution process were also investigated. The test results show that the damage mode of SHCLRM is related to the combination mode of rock layers and the orientation of fractures.Hard layers predominantly produce tensile cracks;soft layers produce shear cracks. The first crack always sprouts at the tip or middle of prefabricated fractures in hard layers. The acoustic emission signal of SHCLRM with double fractures has clear stage characteristics, and the state of crack development can be inferred from this signal to provide early warning for rock fracture instability. This study can provide a reference for the assessment of the fracture development status between adjacent roadways in SHCLRM in underground mines,as well as in roadway layout and support. 展开更多
