The crack volume strain method and acoustic emission(AE)method are used to analyze the anisotropy of the crack initiation strength, damage strength, the failure mode and the AE characteristics of coal reservoir. The results show that coal reservoirs show obvious anisotropic characteristics in compressive strength, cracking initiation strength and damage strength. The compressive strength of coal reservoirs decreases with the increase of bedding angle, but the reservoirs with bedding angles of 450 and 900 differ little in compressive strength. The crack initiation strength and damage strength decrease first and then increase with the increase of bedding angle. The crack initiation strength and damage strength are the highest,at the bedding angle of 0°,moderate at the bedding angle of 90°,and lowest at the bedding angle of 45°.When the bedding angle is 0°,the failure of the coal reservoirs is mainly steady propagation of large-scale fractures. When the bedding angle is 45°,one type of failure is caused by steady propagation of small-scale fractures, and the other type of failure is due to a sudden instability of large-scale fractures. When the bedding angle is 90°,the failure is mainly demonstrated by a sudden-instability of small-scale fractures.Compared with the cumulative count method of the AE,the cumulative energy method is more suitable for determining crack initiation strength and damage strength of coal reservoirs. 展开更多

The formation strength plateau of ceramics is addressed. A set of of 99A1203 are conducted, mechanism of the residual subjected to thermal shock thermal shock experiments where the thin specimens of 1 mm× 10 mm×50 mm exhibit parallel through edge cracks, and thus permit quantitative measurements of the crack patterns. The cracks evolve with the severity of ther- mal shock. It is found that there is a correlation between the length and density of the thermal shock cracks. The increase of crack length weakens the residual strength, whereas the increase of crack density improves it. In a considerably wide temperature range, the two contrary effects just counteract each other; consequently a plateau appears in the variation curve of the residual strength. A comparison between the numerical and experimental results of the residual strength is made, and they are found in good agreement. This work is helpful to a deep understanding of the thermal shock failure of ceramics. 展开更多

The effect of shot peening(SP) on hydrogen embrittlement of high strength steel was investigated by electrochemical hydrogen charging, slow strain rate tensile tests, and hydrogen permeation tests. Microstructure observation, microhardness, and X-ray diffraction residual stress studies were also conducted on the steel. The results show that the shot peening specimens exhibit a higher resistance to hydrogen embrittlement in comparison with the no shot peening(NSP) specimens under the same hydrogen-charging current density. In addition, SP treatment sharply decreases the apparent hydrogen diffusivity and increases the subsurface hydrogen concentration. These findings are attributed to the changes in microstructure and compressive residual stress in the surface layer by SP. Scanning electron microscope fractographs reveal that the fracture surface of the NSP specimen exhibits the intergranular and quasi-cleavage mixed fracture modes, whereas the SP specimen shows only the quasi-cleavage fractures under the same hydrogen charging conditions, implying that the SP treatment delays the onset of intergranular fracture. 展开更多

Based on uniaxial compression experimental results on fractured sandstone with grouting and anchorage, we studied the strength and deformation properties, the failure model, crack formation and evolution laws of fractured sandstone under different conditions of anchorage. The experimental results show that the strength and elastic modulus of fractured sandstone with different fracture angles are significantly lower than those of intact sandstone. Compared with the fractured samples without anchorage, the peak strength, residual strength, peak and ultimate axial strain of fractured sandstone under different anchorage increase by 64.5–320.0%, 62.8–493.0%, and 31.6–181.4%, respectively. The number of bolts and degree of pre-stress has certain effects on the peak strength and failure model of fractured sandstone. The peak strength of fractured sandstone under different anchorage increases to some extent, and the failure model of fractured sandstone also transforms from tensile failure to tensile–shear mixed failure with the number of bolts. The pre-stress can restrain the formation and evolution process of tensile cracks, delay the failure process of fractured sandstone under anchorage and impel the transformation of failure model from brittle failure to plastic failure. 展开更多

Based on the skew bending failure pattern observed in tests, and according to the gradual increase in strain on the concrete surface, a nonlinear full range analysis is performed for predicting the torque-twist relationship of members under combined torsion and shear for the ratio of torsion to shear is chosen bigger than 0.5 (T/ V b> 0.5). The test results are compared with the theoretical predictions. 展开更多

To evaluate stress corrosion cracking(SCC) mechanism of low alloy ultra-high strength steel 30CrMnSiNi2 A in environment containing NaCl, SCC behavior of the steel in 3.5wt% NaCl solution is investigated by slow strain rate technique(SSRT) with various strain rates and applied potentials, surface analysis technique, and electrochemical measurements. SCC susceptibility of the steel increases rapidly with strain rate decreasing from 1 · 10 5s 1to 5 · 10 7s 1, and becomes stable when strain rate is lower than 5 · 10 7s 1. SCC propagation of the steel in the solution at open circuit potential(OCP) needs sufficient hydrogen which is supplied at a certain strain rate.Fracture surface at OCP has similar characteristics with that at cathodic polarization 1000 mVSCE, which presents characteristic fractography of hydrogen induced cracking(HIC).All of these indicate that SCC behavior of the steel in the solution at OCP is mainly controlled by HIC rather than anodic dissolution(AD). 展开更多

The mechanical behavior within the processing zone of concrete material can be well described by the crack bridging performance. The material properties related to the crack bridging are cracking strength, tensile strength, and the stress-crack width relationship. In general, the cracking strength is lower than the tensile strength of concrete. Crack propagation is governed by the cracking strength. This paper presents a method to determine the above material parameters from a three-point bending test. In the experiment, a pre-notched beam is used. Corresponding values of load, crack mouth opening displacement, and load point displacement are simultaneously recorded. From experimentally determined load-crack mouth opening displacement curves, the above-mentioned crack bridging parameters are deduced by a numerical procedure. The method can be used to evaluate the influence of coarse aggregate and cementitious matrix strength on the stress-crack width relationship, tensile strength, and fracture energy of concrete. 展开更多

Under the as-welded condition the fatigue crack initiation period was considered nonexistent and Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics(LEFM) was used to calculate fatigue strength for a range of weld geometries. Fracture mechanics assessment of welded joints requires accurate solutions for stress intensity factor(SIF). However, the solutions for the SIF of complex welded joints are dificult to determine due to the complicated correction factors. Three methods for SIF prediction are discussed on illet welded specimens containing continuous or semi-elliptical surface cracks, including the traditional correction method Mk, the approximate correction method Kt, and the suggested additional crack size method(ac+ae). The new additional crack parameter ae is used to replace the stress concentration effect of weld proile Mk, which simpliies the calculation process. Experimental results are collected to support fatigue strength assessment of the additional crack size method. 展开更多
