Innovative Teaching Research on Literary Theory and Criticism

As a core compulsory course for English majors majoring in teacher education,Literary Theory and Criticism plays an important role in enhancing text understanding,cultivating critical thinking,and shaping correct values in the future development of students.Influenced by traditional teaching ideas,students have many difficulties when learning this course,such as insufficient theoretical understanding,inadequate ability improvement,and not enough investment in course learning.In response to the above issues,this course focuses closely on the fundamental task of“cultivating virtue and nurturing people”,relying on modern information technology and introducing research methods of digital humanities.This course uses“7C”teaching mode under the“three-level integration”,in which“teaching”and“education”are carried out synchronously,and“teacher”and“student”are developed together,in order to greatly enhance students’learning participation and course satisfaction.

Research on the Classification of Western Literary Criticism Under M. H. Abrams’Fourfold Model

This study explores the application of Abrams’Fourfold Model in the classification of Western literary criticism.Abrams’framework categorizes literary criticism into four fundamental elements:text,author,world,and audience.The text is viewed as an independent entity with intrinsic artistic value,necessitating a detailed analysis of its structure,style,themes,and symbols.Author study delves into the creator’s life and socio-cultural context,often to uncover the work’s deeper meanings.Contextual study situates the work within its historical and social milieu,examining its reflection of or response to societal norms and events.Audience response analysis considers the diverse interpretations shaped by readers’backgrounds,emphasizing the reader’s role in constructing the work’s meaning.The study concludes that Abrams’Fourfold Model offers a comprehensive and flexible analytical tool,enabling critics to engage with literary works from multiple perspectives,thereby enriching the understanding of literary complexity and diversity.

On Ethical Literary Criticism and Game Theory--An Interview with Professor Nie Zhenzhao

A Study of Attitude in Art Criticism

Functional linguistic research focuses on the dimension of"implementation,"with research on"instance"and"individuation"being relatively scarce.However,Appraisal Theory provides a comprehensive method for realizing"instance"and"individuation".Appraisal Theory,as a type of empirical research method with strong capabilities in both operation and application,is heavily involved in a variety of fields such as literature,art,philosophy,news,and law.Overall,research in the arts is deficient.This study employs Appraisal Theory as a framework for analyzing the discourse of art criticism from the perspective of the attitude system,analyzing 83 art critiques chosen for their semantic meaning of emotion and valuation endowed by the writers in critical language.It performs identification,analysis,and classification on corpus resources in order to investigate the application of Appraisal theory in art criticism and summarize representation and feature of these attitudinal resources used.The author concludes that the attitudinal resources all involve affect,judgment,and appreciation,but are distributed unevenly.The feature demonstrates that more appreciation than affect and judgement is involved,more positive meaning than negative meaning is conveyed,and an explicit rather than implicit method is used.According to this study,the attitudinal resources effectively contribute to the establishment of relationships among the writer,artworks,and the potential reader,and they function well in appraisal by establishing a"resonance"relationship between the artwork and the potential reader within person.

However, after detailed and systematic research, I also find some shortcomings in this important academic work: Firstly, written in the metaphysical language, Fiction and Repetition can never succeed in escaping the logocentrism and binary opposition inherent in this language.Secondly, based on Saussure's argument on langue, the monograph's view of indeterminacy of literary work's meaning is theoretically correct but practically inadequate. Last but not the least, Miller's proposal on repetition also has some limitations. By taking into account both the work's merits and demerits, we can gain a more comprehensive outlook on Miller's idea of repetition as well as the deconstruction theory of literary criticism in general.
