As a means of communication,English has been internationalized.Communication in English always happens among the seafarers from different cultures.If crews couldn’t deal with the cultural differences well,successful communication and shipboard safety,which are just what STCW (Standards on Training,Certificate and Watch -keeping) calls upon,are difficult to be arrived at. Therefore cross -cultural communicative competence training,or how to teach maritime spoken English is the problem or the challenge that we,English teachers,are facing.To show how the teaching can be made more efficient and practical so as to narrow the gap between the training of the seaman in China and the requirements of STCW,through the teaching process,including the syllabus design and the materials selecting,we must consider the notion of language function as the key point.

A Study on Cross-Cultural Communication and the Cultivation of Cross-Cultural Competence in German Language Teaching in Universities

Exploring Cross-Cultural Components in International Teacher Education Programs to Build Competenc(ies)for Indonesia

This article reviews preservice teacher arts education university course work with the goal of informing cross-cultural competencies for Indonesian teacher education.The authors are mid-career education faculty,who visited six universities in three countries to observe cross-cultural contents in teacher preparation courses.Cross-cultural competence relies on theories of globalization,intercultural and multicultural education.Using a case study method,the authors gathered data through relevant literature,course descriptions,met with stakeholders,wrote and coded reflective and reflexive field notes,and identified trends.These trends included the infusion of Eastern content into Western course work,and the role of Western arts forms in Eastern settings.These findings support the development of“cross-cultural communication through the arts”or“komunikasi silang budaya melalui seni”as a way of approaching cross-cultural teaching in Indonesia.

Japanese honorifics which symbolizes the social culture of Japan are linguistic forms that are indispensable in the Japanese language education.Hence,the Japanese language education requires an improvement of previously solidified teaching methods with the cultivation of students’intercultural communication competence,in order for students to understand Japanese honorifics in-depth and apply them in practice.This paper analyzes the necessity of cultivating students’intercultural communication competence,the difficulties in Japanese honorifics education,and proposes specific training methods to help students improve their competence.

Cross-Cultural Awareness and Teaching English as a Second Language in the Context of Globalization

The paper focuses on the inseparability of language and culture, highlighting the significant role of cross-culturalawareness and communicative competence in teaching English as a second language （TESL） in the context ofincreasingly internationalized global world. Cross-cultural awareness has always been important in modernlanguage studies, as preparing students for effective and competent intercultural communication requires not onlymere teaching of linguistic skills like phonology, morphology, lexicology, and syntax, but also the vital componentof cultural knowledge and awareness. It is strongly believedthat developing cross-cultural awareness through learning and practicing the patterns of the current lifestyle in thetarget culture will help the learners overcome both cultural shock and intercultural communicative barriers easier,compare the target culture with their own, and find the similarities and differences between them, thus coping withcross-cultural communication problems successfully. There are many challenges related to teaching English as alingua franka in a cross-cultural context of globalization--English, not being the native language of the learners,triggers a great number of problems connected with teaching and developing cross-cultural awareness. This paperoffers some strategies for coping with them.

With the development of globalization and internationalization in the 21st century,English has taken the role of international communication tool.So the cross-cultural communicative competence has been the must tool for people's life in 21st century.But nowadays in the college English language teaching,both English teachers and students are aware of the significance of learning,contacting,and understanding the culture of English-speaking countries.With more knowledge of the culture of English-speaking countries,it can help to cultivate the students' cross-cultural communicative competence,to improve the students' English proficiency and to promote the progress of English language ability.However,English as an international language,not only it can express the target language culture,but also the learners' native culture.Thus foreign language teaching and learning should not simply provide students opportunities to learn and know about target culture,it should also fulfill the task of transmitting their own native culture,which is one of objective for foreign language education.Thus,the students should know more about our native culture and have the ability about the English expressiveness of the native culture and with these they can make the real cross cultural communication.
