As a means of communication,English has been internationalized.Communication in English always happens among the seafarers from different cultures. If crews couldn’t deal with the cultural differences well, successful communication and shipboard safety, which are just what STCW (Standards on Training,Certificate and Watch -keeping) calls upon, are difficult to be arrived at. Therefore cross -cultural communicative competence training,or how to teach maritime spoken English is the problem or the challenge that we,English teachers, are facing. To show how the teaching can be made more efficient and practical so as to narrow the gap between the training of the seaman in China and the requirements of STCW,through the teaching process, including the syllabus design and the materials selecting,we must consider the notion of language function as the key point. 展开更多

This research compares a sample of the mainland Chinese university students (N = 325) and a sample of the British university students (N = 51) from a cross-cultural perspective by examining the relationships between individual values and communicative competence. Specifically, it aims to gain an insight into cultural impact both on the Chinese university students' self-perceptions of communication competence in the Chinese cultural context and on the British university students' self-perceptions of communication competence in a Western cultural context. The findings suggest that the mainland Chinese university students' interdependent/independent self-construals best predict their self-perceptions of communication competence. Results indicate that both Western and Chinese social values influence the two samples' interdependent and independent self-construals, and the two samples' self-perceptions of communication competence and interdependent self-construals differ significantly 展开更多

It is no doubt that it has got many achievements. However, it has produced many bad byproducts as well. For instance, it may produce some students who are good in grammatical achievements but lacking in responding to the actual situation. Therefore linguistic knowledge is not the whole field that English teaching should touch upon. Inducing from two instances, this article presents the importance of communicative ability and cross-cultural competence in China's English teaching, together with proper solutions. 展开更多

This article reviews preservice teacher arts education university course work with the goal of informing cross-cultural competencies for Indonesian teacher education. The authors are mid-career education faculty, who visited six universities in three countries to observe cross-cultural contents in teacher preparation courses.Cross-cultural competence relies on theories of globalization, intercultural and multicultural education.Using a case study method, the authors gathered data through relevant literature, course descriptions, met with stakeholders, wrote and coded reflective and reflexive field notes, and identified trends. These trends included the infusion of Eastern content into Western course work, and the role of Western arts forms in Eastern settings. These findings support the development of“cross-cultural communication through the arts”or“komunikasi silang budaya melalui seni”as a way of approaching cross-cultural teaching in Indonesia. 展开更多

The paper focuses on the inseparability of language and culture, highlighting the significant role of cross-culturalawareness and communicative competence in teaching English as a second language (TESL) in the context ofincreasingly internationalized global world. Cross-cultural awareness has always been important in modernlanguage studies, as preparing students for effective and competent intercultural communication requires not onlymere teaching of linguistic skills like phonology, morphology, lexicology, and syntax, but also the vital componentof cultural knowledge and awareness. Communication that lacks appropriate cultural content often results in anodd or humorous situation leading to misunderstanding and miscommunication. Therefore, the present paperclaims that in TESL it is necessary to incorporate and develop aspects of cross-cultural awareness as a part of thecourse curriculum to immerse students in effective intercultural communicative competence. It is strongly believedthat developing cross-cultural awareness through learning and practicing the patterns of the current lifestyle in thetarget culture will help the learners overcome both cultural shock and intercultural communicative barriers easier, compare the target culture with their own, and find the similarities and differences between them, thus coping withcross-cultural communication problems successfully. There are many challenges related to teaching English as alingua franka in a cross-cultural context of globalization--English, not being the native language of the learners, triggers a great number of problems connected with teaching and developing cross-cultural awareness. This paperoffers some strategies for coping with them. 展开更多

This study aimed to examine some coursebooks of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) to see whether they involve any cross-cultural topics belonging to different cultures from different countries in the world. Assuming that EFL coursebooks written after the communicative movements in foreign language teaching and learning in the 1970s and the 1980s would have a plenty of cross-cultural elements, it was expected to see these coursebooks would also have a lot of cross-cultural elements, especially regarding their publication dates. This study aimed to investigate to what extent teaching materials used in EFL setting involve intercultural elements. Accordingly, 5 coursebooks were evaluated, and topics and number of cross-cultural elements were presented. The coursebooks used in the study were published in 1998, 1999, 1999, 2001 and 2006 namely. However, as the results displayed, the frequency of cross-cultural elements were not mutually related to their publication dates. The distribution and frequency of cross-cultural elements were not balanced with the dates chronologically. 展开更多

In the 21st century, the development of digital and new media technologies has ushered in an age of pervasive multimodal communication, which has significantly amplified the role of multimodal translation in facilitating crosscultural exchanges.Despite the profound impact of these developments, the prevailing translation pedagogy remains predominantly focused on the enhancement of linguistic translation skills, with noticeable neglect of the imperative to cultivate students’competencies in multimodal translation.Based on the distinctive characteristics and challenges that multimodal translation presents in the context of new media, this study delves into the formulation of educational objectives and curriculum design for the training of multimodal translators. The intent is to propose a framework that can guide the preparation of translators who are adept and equipped to navigate the complexities and demands of the contemporary age. 展开更多

With the development of globalization and internationalization in the 21st century,English has taken the role of international communication tool.So the cross-cultural communicative competence has been the must tool for people's life in 21st century. But nowadays in the college English language teaching, both English teachers and students are aware of the significance of learning, contacting, and understanding the culture of English-speaking countries. With more knowledge of the culture of English-speaking countries,it can help to cultivate the students' cross-cultural communicative competence,to improve the students' English proficiency and to promote the progress of English language ability. However,English as an international language, not only it can express the target language culture, but also the learners' native culture. Thus foreign language teaching and learning should not simply provide students opportunities to learn and know about target culture,it should also fulfill the task of transmitting their own native culture, which is one of objective for foreign language education. Thus, the students should know more about our native culture and have the ability about the English expressiveness of the native culture and with these they can make the real cross cultural communication. 展开更多

In the plurilingual and multicultural contemporary international setting, the educational systems opt for successfully meeting as well as adapting to the rapid social, economic, and technological changes.Based on the premise that intercultural communicative competence holds a significant potential for foreign language instruction, focus should throw into combining teachers’intercultural knowledge with pedagogy and technology. The prospect of introducing intercultural material within the context of teaching scenarios in the curricula of a technology-enhanced foreign language learning environment where the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge(TPACK)approach is implemented, can positively contribute to the teaching process.Under this perspective, cultural and digitally competent teachers can create a framework which will enable learners to fully develop their interactive and linguistic skills and to effectively communicate in a foreign language promoting its social and multicultural dimension whatever the intercultural context. 展开更多

According to the principals of the Course Standard of English for Ordinary Senior Schools, published by China Education Ministry in 2001, the general goal of English curriculum on the basic education stage is to foster the students' cross-cultural awareness, which is to develop their cross-cultural communicative competence. To achieve this goal, most of all, teachers of English at high school must have a good command of cross-cultural pragmatic competence. By looking through papers in various periodicals and the Internet, the writer finds that most of the studies have coped with pragmatic failures of ESL students but few of ESL teachers'. Therefore, this thesis studies the present situation --- how much do schoolteachers of English know about pragmatics? What about their cross-cultural communicative competence? Can they communicate with the native speakers fluently and appropriately? What are the most serious problems among them in pragmatics? What can be done to solve the problems? With all the questions, this research has collected considerable firsthand data and information. Only after the basic situations are known overall, can actions be taken to solve the problems existing in everyday ESL teaching. So this research is necessary and urgent for the present basic English pedagogy. However, since the present writer's ability and research conditions are limited, it is not possible to make a wider investigation in many places. Therefore, the district --- Bameng League, Inner Mongolia, China, is selected as the basic range of the survey, the situation of which is believed to be able to represent the basic educational ones in the poor and remote districts in the north and the west of China where education is more backward. The questionnaire consists of two parts: a table of individual information and a test paper. The former investigates informants' basic information, including the items of name, age, sex, teaching age, title of the technical post, degree, academic career, college or university that they graduated from, working unit, grades for teaching and the others. The latter is the test paper cited from He Ziran and Yan Zhuang (1986), that is, Chinese Students'Pragmatic Failure in English Communication --- Survey of the Pragmatic Difference between Chinese and English. And it contains 48 items, with items of pragmalinguistic and socio-pragmatic competence mixedly arranged. 120 of the questionnaire copies were handed out and 86 are collected, but only 64 are collected. The survey covers over 10 high schools in all the 7 banners of Bameng League, including two autonomous region-class key schools and five other league-class key schools. After the investigation, the present writer carefully corrects, marks, arranges, summarizes and analyzes the questionnaire, and obtains plenty of firsthand data and information. Then some conclusions have been drawn based on the data analysis. The result of the survey shows that linguistic competence is not equal to pragmatic competence, that ESL high school English teachers may use English rather fluently, without many mistakes in vocabulary and grammar, but it does not necessarily mean that they can use the target language appropriately to communicate with native speakers without pragmatic failures, and that the informants' knowledge of pragmatics and their pragmatic competence are rather poor. As a result, improving their knowledge and competence in pragmatics becomes a very necessary and urgent task to develop the quality of ELT in basic educational stages. In order to solve the above problems, the writer makes some suggestions as follows: (1) Pragmatics should be required as an essential course for the English majors in colleges and universities, especially in normal colleges and universities; (2) In-service high school English teachers must study courses of pragmatics and cross-cultural communication; (3) In some poor and remote districts, if educational conditions don't permit, textbooks of pragmatics and cross-cultural communication must be handed out to the high school English teachers who can study by themselves, then tests are regularly held for them and certificates will be given to those who have passed the tests; (4) In some developed districts, if conditions permit, English teachers can be sent abroad to English-speaking countries for further education in order to have a good command of the English language in the authentic contexts; (5) Modern multiple medias, such as VCD or DVD videos, TV or radio programs, the Internet, should be widely and frequently applied to training teachers; (6) More native language teachers and experts from English-speaking countries must be invited to high schools to train teachers of English. 展开更多
