From political perspective, this thesis will take the popularity of Yu Hua’s works in US into account to analyze and explore how cultural soft power, has impacts on translation activities, especially translation direction and source text selection.展开更多

Based on elaboration on the connotations of the marine culture and marine power, we respectively analyze the relationship between marine culture and marine power construction from the relationships between marine culture and development level of the marine economy, development level of the marine science and technology, the protection ability of the marine environment, international competitiveness of the marine industry, regulation and management of marine affairs and maritime national defense abili- ty. We put forward the countermeasures and suggestions of marine power construction, such as strengthening marine culture propaganda, vigorously developing marine power industry, enhancing the marine cultural safety construction and adhering to development mode of the marine culture with Chinese characteristics.展开更多

Collectively, these institutions can be understood as forming an urban "cultural nexus of power" that allowed non-state actors to effectively control aspects of Shanghai's political life. This bourgeois-intellectual alliance was not inevitable; no similar bonds existed between these same two groups in Beijing. It was forged in Shanghai due to the city's unique historical position as a Treaty Port and its dynamic economy, which included an extensive structure of private higher education and a market-based publishing industry. Unlike the rural "cultural nexus of power" originally described by Prasenjit Duara, this urban nexus grew stronger during the political and economic changes of the early twentieth century. War and revolution in the 1930s and 1940s, however, destroyed the connections between the bourgeoisie and the intellectuals, ending the vibrant urban environment they had created.展开更多

Although China's cultural "Charm Offensive" has not gone unnoticed, a variety of specific activities have not been subject to research so far. This paper, therefore, attempts to fill this research gap by analyzing Chinese state-level cultural diplomacy through a comparative case study of three China Culture Year events held in France (2004), Italy (2010), and Germany (2012). These findings are subsequently compared to the China Culture Year in Australia (2012), thereby allowing the identification of spatial variations. I argue that the Chinese government applies a general approach of organizing the events abroad by making use of local institu- tions. At the same time, through the strategic selection of events, the festivals portray distinct national images that transmit particular narratives of self-presentation to the European audience and take into account country-specific preferences.展开更多
