在过去的几年,将图像内容表示为特定"视觉词"出现次数直方图的Bag-of-words模型,展示了其在图像内容分类方面的强大优势.然而,在这种统计特定"视觉词"出现次数直方图的模型中,"视觉词"之间的相互位置关系几乎被完全丢弃了.本文从分析Bag-of-words模型在文本分类和图像内容分类领域的对应关系的角度出发,提出一种加入"视觉词"之间的相互位置关系的图像表示方法—Bag-of-phrases模型.在标准数据集上验证了该图像表示方法对图像内容分类性能的影响.实验结果显示,本文提出的方法相对于传统的Bag-of-words模型可以达到更好的分类性能.

Hybrid Neural Network for Automatic Recovery of Elliptical Chinese Quantity Noun Phrases

In Mandarin Chinese,when the noun head appears in the context,a quantity noun phrase can be reduced to a quantity phrase with the noun head omitted.This phrase structure is called elliptical quantity noun phrase.The automatic recovery of elliptical quantity noun phrase is crucial in syntactic parsing,semantic representation and other downstream tasks.In this paper,we propose a hybrid neural network model to identify the semantic category for elliptical quantity noun phrases and realize the recovery of omitted semantics by supplementing concept categories.Firstly,we use BERT to generate character-level vectors.Secondly,Bi-LSTM is applied to capture the context information of each character and compress the input into the context memory history.Then CNN is utilized to capture the local semantics of n-grams with various granularities.Based on the Chinese Abstract Meaning Representation(CAMR)corpus and Xinhua News Agency corpus,we construct a hand-labeled elliptical quantity noun phrase dataset and carry out the semantic recovery of elliptical quantity noun phrase on this dataset.The experimental results show that our hybrid neural network model can effectively improve the performance of the semantic complement for the elliptical quantity noun phrases.

Contrast Between English and Chinese Culturally-Loaded Words

Vocabulary in a language is influenced by and bears features of culture, so in languages, vocabulary has the greatest culture-loading capacity. This paper makes a contrastive study between English and Chinese culturally-loaded words, and tries to make clear how cultural disparities exist in English and Chinese vocabulary. Culturally-loaded words play a significant role in understanding the languages of different cultures, giving the readers insight into cultures. Learning and grasping the culturally-loaded words can promote the efficiency of vocabulary teaching and improve learners＇ competence in intercultural communication.

Acquiring synonymous attribute phrases for named entities via online encyclopedia

In this work,an approach is proposed to acquire synonymous attribute phrases of named entities(NEs) from an online encyclopedia.Synonymous attribute phrases are the phrases that express the same attribute with different surface forms for a class of NEs.Specifically,the proposed approach is composed of three stages.Firstly,the entries related to a given NE class are automatically selected from an online encyclopedia.Secondly,attribute phrases are extracted based on the statistics of phrase frequency.Thirdly,synonymous attributes are identified in a pairwise manner through a classification framework combining multiple features.The proposed approach is applied on Baidu Baike,a Chinese online encyclopedia,for four different NE classes.Experimental results show that the approach obtains an average precision of 74%and an average F-value of 65%for the four NE classes.In particular,thousands of synonymous attribute phrase pairs are acquired for each class,which demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

A Review of the Semantic Interpretation of Bare Noun Phrases

Bare noun phrases are difined as noun phrases without determiners.Since Carlson(1977),bare noun phrases,as a special category of noun phrases have been arousing great interest in the field of linguistics.A lot of studies have been conducted by scholars both home and abroad.Opinions can be achieved into different approaches.This present paper summarizes the accomplishment in the semantic interpretation of bare noun phrases in languages,esp in English and Chinese in order to provide a general introduction to the problems related to and the research prospect of bare noun phrases.

The Semantic Comparison between Bare Noun Phrases in English and in Chinese

Since Carlson(1977), bare noun phrases(which willbe referred to as BNPs afterwards) have been a focus of linguistics in English. Gradually, the studies of bare noun phrase has also caught much attention in China. Despite of the extensive studies of BNPs in English and Chinese respectively, a systematic comparison between English and Chinese BNPs in semantic readings is still less developed. More detailed studies and comparisons are obviously desirable. Most linguists agree that the semantics of the predicates, syntactic distribution and pragmatic factors all have a role to play in determining the interpretation of BNPs. Thus the paper has systematically made a semantic comparison between English BNPs and Chinese BNPs in terms of different predicate types and different syntactic distributions following the four semantic readings of BNPs of Shen(2005), namely, generic reading, existential reading,definite reading and non-referential reading.

Contour Patterns of Chinese Intonational Phrases

Due to the interaction between lexical tones and intonation in Chinese speech melody, the contour patterns of Chinese IPs （intonational phrases） have long been an intriguing yet complicated subject. Within the AM （Autosegmental-Metrical） framework, this paper makes an empirical study on the subject based on a small-scale database of 22 standard Chinese news stories. A five-degree D value system is proposed for data normalization so that various contour patterns of IPs can be identified and compared despite complications in pitch register and pitch range. The major findings are： Chinese IPs mainly comprise 2, 3, or 4 ips （intermediate phrases）. And the contour patterns of Chinese IPs suggest that the statement intonation in Chinese is primarily indicated by the near-bottom Dmin value of the last ip. Meanwhile, when the primary indicator is not typical, the falling trend of the last part of the top-line can serve as a compensatory perceptual clue.

A Comparison of Cultural Connotations between English and Chinese Color Words and Phrases

In social anthropology,"culture"is a catch word for all those patterns of thinking, feeling, and acting. It is always a collective phenomenon, because it is at least partly shared with people who live or lived within the same social environment. Culture can be classified into several layers of which historical, regional, religious, and social cultures are discussed in this paper. Language and culture are closely related. Certain language reflects certain culture in which the language is used. As two different languages, Chinese and English have their own cultural characteristics and connotations. This paper compares the cultural connotations of Chinese and English color words to see how important the cultural background of a language is in cross-cultural communication.

'Tortured phrases' in post-publication peer review of materials, computer and engineering sciences reveal linguistic-related editing problems

A surge in post-publication activity related to editing,including by technical editors and copyeditors,is worthy of some discussion.One of these issues involves the issue of'tortured phrases',which are bizarre terms and phrases in academic papers that replace standard English expressions or jargon.This phenomenon may reveal an attempt to avoid the detection of textual similarity or to masquerade plagiarism,and yet remain undetected by editors,peer reviewers and text editors.Potentially thousands of cases have already been discovered and reported publicly on the post-publication platform PubPeer.In this opinion paper,35 cases from ranked scholarly journals are presented,mainly the fields of materials,computer and engineering sciences.This collation serves to expand discussion about this integrity-related phenomenon and to increase educational awareness of the topic.
