This was due to the differences in commercial, economic, political, religious, and cultural environments proportional to the real environment's demand for Chinese characters and Chinese classical works. Chinese characters were introduced to Gaochang, Qiuci, Khotan, Korea, Japan, and Vietnam as early as the Han Dynasty, with different development paths in these regions. It is easy to form a long lasting culture spread by Chinese language and characters, as long as official languages are consistent with national or religious languages of the regions. It is difficult to form a long lasting culture spread by official languages and characters if the official languages and characters are inconsistent with either languages of daily life or religious languages. Once there is replacement of official languages and characters, or a change in religious belief, it would cause incompatibility between official languages and daily life languages, Chinese-character culture is bound to decline and gradually fade way. But if there are Han people, they will retain the use of Chinese characters.展开更多

Despite its historical and cultural significance, the role of hair, however, remains curiously a marginalized subject among the renewed interests on the body in the academic fields. In this paper, the author attempts to politicize the queue from 3 perspectives: maintaining a certain prescribed hairstyle is a top-down gesture to construct national conformity; the boundary between Manchu and Han is invoked and reinvented through the battles surrounding the queue politic in late Qing and early Republic; the widespread debate between keeping the queue and cutting the queue at the turn of the 20th century epitomizes the haunting rhetoric of traditionalism and modernism pursuit of modernity in China.展开更多

This effect is mediated via their structural similarity to the carbohydrate ligands, located on the mucosal cell surface to which bacterial lectins attach. However, the mechanism for this inhibition is not well understood. The goal of this research was to measure the effect of two prebiotic carbohydrates, galactooli-gosaccharide and polydextrose, on the binding kinetics of plant lectins, having known ligand specificity, to tissue culture cells. To measure adherence, competetion experiments were conducted with HEp-2 cells exposed to nine fluorescent-labeled lectins and either the cognate ligand or a prebiotic. Fluorescence microscopy and image analysis were used to quantify adherence. Lectins that were able to bind to target cells were significantly inhibited in the presence of the cognate ligands. When prebiotics were added, inhibittion of lectin binding was observed, depending on the structural similarity between the prebiotic and the cognate ligands. In general, PDX did not inhibit lectin attachment, whereas GOS significantly inhibited most lectins. This research suggests that receptor sites located on the surface of epithelial HEp-2 cells are structurally similar to GOS.展开更多

The most important contribution of Ly Thai To in Vietnamese history is to move the capital from Hoa Lu to Dai La, and rename it as Thang Long (Ascending Dragon) in 1010. Nowadays, it is known as Hanoi. Ly Thai To promoted Buddhism, and reduced the centuries-old influence of Confucianism in the kingdom. The growth and prevalence of Buddhism brought about a long period of peace, where Buddhist literature consequently flourished with seminal achievements. Due to King Ly Thai To's enormous contributions, the Vietnamese have created several legends and anecdotes to mystify his life. Thus, although a historical figure, his life remains a mystery and controversy. In 2010, Hanoi celebrated the 1000th anniversary of Thang Long. On this occasion, Vietnamese historical films about Ly Cong Uan were produced. This created intriguing variations within historical facts, legends, and on-screen stories. This paper will explore the reconstruction of Ly Cong Uan's life from an adaptation studies perspective through four historical films: Legend of the Capital Relocation (Huyen su thien do), Thang Long Aspiration (Khat vong Thang Long), Ly Cong Uan The Road to Thang Long Citadel (Ly Cong Uan: Dtrong toi thanh Thang Long), Child of the Dragon (Ngtroi con cua Rong). This research also wants to clarify the issues of national identity, nationalism, and cultural interaction reflected through the representations of Ly Thai To in those cinematic products展开更多

The nature of the biofilm and the physiological properties of biofilm-producing bacteria result in an inherent antibiotic resistance and require further investigation. Two hundred and sixty Staphylococcal strains were cultured from 600 clinical specimens obtained from hospitalized patients. Among these, 155 were identified as coagulase-positive (CPS) and 105 as coagulase-negative (CNS) staphylococci. Staphylococcal strains were tested for biofilm production using the tissue culture plate (TCP) method. TCP detection showed that of the 155 CPS, 124 (80%) were biofilm producers, while 63 (60%) of the 105 CNS were biofilm producers. Biofilm-producing strains were scanned by scanning electron microscope (SEM) to confirm biofilm formation, study biofilm production, and examine antibiotic effects on biofilm formation. Disc diffusion method was used to study resistance of planktonic and biofilm-forming cells to antibiotics. Planktonic cells were less resistant to antibiotics than biofilm-forming cells. Microbroth dilution method and a new BioTimer assay were used to determine antibiotic MICs affecting planktonic and biofilm cells. Both methods showed that the MICs for planktonic cells were less than that for biofilm cells. The BioTimer assay was therefore found to be sensitive, accurate, and reliable, with results in agreement with those from the broth dilution method and SEM.展开更多
