With the coming of the information era and the flaming of the international communication, the English language has already made itself a very important and universally used language. However, because of the lack of cultural knowledge of the target language, many cross-cultural contacts turn out to be frustrating or even a failure. Therefore, to guarantee an effective intercultural communication, a lot of knowledge about target culture is needed; besides, people should have a good command of different cultures and should fully understand the cultural differences in intercultural communication. So it is important and of great necessity to take culture into consideration in FLT. But how to acquire cultural knowledge effectively always exists as a problem. In this thesis, the author attempts to solve the problem by using schema theory. Schema is a sort of background knowledge stored in a person's mind in order to perceive and understand the world. Usually if a person possesses more foreign cultural schemata, he or she will behave appropriately in cross-cultural communication. Therefore, the task left is how to help students build up their cultural schemata about a foreign language. 展开更多

They could be affected by different cultural backgrounds (schemas). Culture is usually treated as the basis of our social interactions which influences the way we deal with problems, and even our thought and behavior. Therefore, although many communication problems occur on the interpersonal level, most difficulties and misunderstandings can be traced to cultural differences. With a deeper comprehension, the cultural differences are the schema differences which are a kind of framework of a specific culture that exists in people's brain and influences people's judgments and behavior of daily life. Furthermore, this schema conflict would also confuse people's judgment and make them to choose the wrong way to respond. Thus, the schema conflict interferes our social interactions. 展开更多

Cultural schemas, as cognitive structures and generalized collections of knowledge of past experiences that are organized into related knowledge groups, can be used to perceive and understand various cultural phenomena in the communication. People carry different schemas (background knowledge) that play an important role in guiding people's behaviors in intercultural communication. The purpose of this paper is to attempt to theoretically apply communication strategies to the development of intercultural communicative competence in light of Cultural Schema Theory. It focuses on the relationship between cultural schema and intercultural communicative competence. Some pedagogical implications are given that cultural schema could be previously intended to help communicaters have a better and easier life when they are living in other countries, such as awareness raising, knowledge acquisition, emotional management, and skills development. This paper is written on the basis of a collection of the Chinese university students' experience of culture-learning. The study has certain significance in the practice on cultural acquisition, communication competence, and intercultural communication. 展开更多

Cultural schema theory proposes that when we interact with members of the same culture in certain situations, or talk about certain information with them many times, cultural schemas are created and stored in our brain, which can promote coherence between the original and target language text, thus solving the cultural default caused by the cultural differences. It is vital to make cultural compensation to different cultural schemas and to coordinate the cultural contradiction. This thesis focuses on the translation methods and strategies in Big Breasts and Wide Hips from the perspective of the cultural schema theory, which exemplifies how cultural default and compensation functions in this novel. 展开更多

Research on the cognitive activities and on the structure and quality of knowledge flow involved in architectural design education is increasing. These studies generally focus on the interaction between student and instructor, including processes such as producing ideas, solving display problems, and integrating design strategies. These studies commonly include computational evaluations and confirmation of the coding of knowledge. They may also include the determination of designer's thoughts and cognitive actions of design process, as welt as the analysis and digitization of verbal protocols during the design process. In most of these studies, the designer's cultural and psychological components are not considered. Accordingly, research on the effects of designers' cultural schema on design activity in design studios is limited. This study aimed to solve this problem by analyzing the relationship between design activity and the designer's cultural schema in a design studio. We performed an experimental study based on a specific conceptual framework and a research model aimed at identifying the relationships among cultural schemas, the architectural design process, and design studios. 展开更多
