The Value Tyranny of the Universality of Western Human Rights Discourse From the perspective of history, human rights discourse originating in the West is first of all a kind of special discourse, rather than universal words. "Human rights discourse is a language of rights, which is a language of Western culture. Therefore, in terms of concept, there is no concept of 'human rights' in traditional Confucianism, not even the concept of 'rights'. In this sense, the concept 'human rights' is a product of typical Western culture, although it appeared in modern times and it was the out- come of the development of civil society and democracy.TM Marked by unique Western color, human rights discourse originated from the special Western economic, political, histori- cal and cultural background and has its unique consciousness of problems and practical direction. He distinguishes between soft power as a guiding principle and public diplomacy as an executive practice when he combines soft power with Mark Leonard's three principal dimensions of public diplomacy: daily communication, strategic communication and building lasting relationship. Nye views American culture values as an element of soft power and he thinks American companies play an important role in boosting the country's soft power. Advertisements have long been the main weapon for American companies to attract other countries' consumers and advertise American culture values and way of life. By analyzing American movie trailers, car ads and commercials of fast food chains, this essay wants to present how American companies exert their influence in the field of public diplomacy and transform abstract soft power of culture values and way of life into tangible and visible forces.展开更多

In the recent times, obesity and chronic diseases are being taken very seriously than ever before. Once upon a time, obesity was considered as a problem only in developed countries, now it is of a serious concern in low- and middle-income countries. In Papua New Guinea (PNG), a few studies have been conducted on obesity-related issues. However, there is not enough data on obesity to clearly understand about the leading contributing factors. Our research group designed this study to assess the influencing factors of obesity and as well as to identify the principal cause. It is a descriptive study, used structured and semi-structured interview and survey questionnaire. This study was conducted in the capital city of PNG, Port Moresby, and recruited 87 adults aged 30 - 50 years. According to interview and analysis findings, the contributing factors of obesity are less physical movement, unhealthy diet, lifestyle, cultural value system, low education and social system. Government strategies and initiatives are not strong enough to educate and motivate the community people. This study suggests developing an effective coordination among all stakeholders to ensure quality education and increase awareness to prevent obesity and its complications. The standard health policies and strategies are also recommended at the local, national and international level with strong commitment.展开更多

Migration is mostly an economic, escape, expatriate, exile activity. It encourages cultural inflow and cultural outflow. Migration to abroad indeed brings good-feel factor, but there is emotional crisis of self and nationality. There is a discovery of one's "Self' as the center of human existence and for interdependence. Because of "Videsiya bhav", lots of narratives, memoirs, letters, and travelogues have been written to search roots of nativity, belongingness in their imagination. Besides manifestation, it is the catharsis of their wings/flight. With their spatial paradigms, the novelists go beyond the past. They perceive present by way of imaginary construction of memory, nostalgia, and myth in order to dispossess the past. To remove the sense of otherness, they eliminate western standardization and reorient their cultural tradition. The paper aims to interrogate the human displacement across borders and rupture in relationships. The study attempts to sensitize the migrants' memories and emotional loss and to understand mobility in terms of the social structure and cultural process. It examines Western psyche with Indian psyche in a context of the emotional history of migrants. Emotion is a child like activity for Indian migrants as well as for those who are left behind in their homeland.展开更多

The principle of respect for human dignity is a universal moral concept, meant to be applied in human encounters. Protecting human rights underscores the legal principle of not only affirming the fundamental equality of all human beings, but equally safeguarding it. These two principles are universally defined, but are ordinarily specified by the particular value system of individual cultures in which they are employed. It is within such particular cultural application that their relevance stands out. The thrust of this paper is that, since principles are general action guides, they actually constitute a universal language for the analysis and evaluation of all human conduct. However, there is also recognition of the fact that moral contexts vary from culture to culture, and that while the scope of the two principles above is not restricted by any particular culture, it is indeed those cultural specifics of each moral context that constitute the framework within which the principles become operational. As general action guides, I will argue that these principles lack moral relevance outside of those particular cultural settings wherein they are contextualized. Without such relevance, these principles become meaningless mantras. I will further show that such principles do not merely uphold values informed by particular cultures, but they are an embodiment of values inherent to human nature in general. Consequently, these principles do not just serve as instruments for addressing issues peculiar to "Western bioethics" or any other particular cultural setting in an exclusive sense, but are also used for moderating bioethics discourse that transcend particular cultural boundaries. I will further explain that such universal discourse is potentially instructive with regards to how cultural universals are viewed in relation to the cultural particulars, and that this discourse essentially becomes a lingua franca for cross-cultural dialogue in bioethics.展开更多

Fifty Chinese EFL (English as a foreign language) college students and 50 American college students participated in writing English persuasive essays on the selected topics. The essays were then compared for similarities and differences in the use of rhetorical appeals with a focus on ethos, the credibility, and trustworthiness of an author. The study revealed that participants from both groups established ethos as an important rhetorical tool to persuade the audience to accept their viewpoints. However, they displayed different perceptions of what effective ethos entailed. For Chinese participants, effective ethos seemed to come from using detailed explanations that reflected an author's intention to advocate an ethical or moral message based on some Chinese cultural values. But, strong ethos for American participants appeared to mean the use of evidence--facts and personal testimony--to establish the writer's trustworthiness. The interpretation of the results from the perspective of different cultural value orientations was also discussed.展开更多

Clear examples of this cultural transplant are given in this work, including but not limited to the use of English language in place of the indigenous languages for communication even when there are no foreigners, smoking of cigarettes, ladies putting on trousers, abortions as a means of birth control, free premarital and extramarital sexual relationships, and homosexuality and gay practices. These which were viewed as an anathema to Nigeria's cultural values have supplanted the traditional conservatism of the Nigerian people. This work particularly looks at Chimamanda Adichie's Purple Hibiscus and distills classical cases of cultural imperialism. Adichie through the character Eugene, captures cultural imperialism as seen in the life of this vastly brainwashed "been-to" who is clearly portrayed as an imperial lackey, capitalist, and apologist. Also, the character of Rev. Father Benedict, a Briton, who often found any indigenous songs in St. Agnes Parish was quite offensive. The work also captures cultural imperialism in the ironical contempt with which the catholic devotee, Eugene, treats his own father, Papa Nnukwu, steeped in the traditional African cultural values, and Eugene viewes him as Godlessness. The essay concludes by identifying the cultural crises that cultural imperialism creates in the Nigerian state, and recommends ways of diluting and diffusing the present cultural imperialism as a solution to the myriad of socio-political crises currently experienced by the Nigerian society.展开更多
