The effects of gap-to-diameter ratio and those of the stability parameter on the amplitude and frequency responses of a pipeline are investigated experimentally with a novel hydro-elastic facility. A comparison is made between the present experimental results of the amplitude and frequency responses for the pipes with seabed boundary effects and those for wall-free cylinders given by Govardhan and Williamson (2000) and Anand (1985). The comparison shows that the close proximity of a pipeline to seabed has much influence on the vortex-induced vibrations of the pipeline. Both the width of the lock-in ranges in terms of Vr and the dimensionless amplitude ratio Amax/D become larger with the decrease of the gap-to-diameter ratio e/D, Moreover, the vibration of the pipeline becomes easier to occur and its amplitude response becomes more intensive with the decrease of the stability parameter, while tire pipeline frequency responses are affected slightly by the stability parameter.展开更多

Our simulation results show that the current combination with an appropriate current flow direction destroys the symmetry of the total effective energy of the system so that the vortex core can be easier to excite, resulting in less critical current density and a faster switching process. Besides its fundamental significance, our findings provide an additional route to incorporating magnetic vortex phenomena into data storage devices.展开更多

The critical current density for magnetic vortex gyration, eigenfrequency, trajectory, velocity and the time for a magnetic vortex to obtain the steady gyration are analyzed. Simulation results reveal that the magnetic vortices in larger and thinner nanodisks can achieve a lower-frequency gyration at a lower current density in a shorter time. However, the magnetic vortices in thicker nanodisks need a higher current density and longer time to attain steady gyration but with a higher eigenfrequency. We also find that the point-contact position exerts different influences on these parameters in different nanodisks, which contributes to the control of the magnetic vortex gyration. The conclusions of this paper can serve as a theoretical basis for designing nano-oscillators and microwave frequency modulators.展开更多

The Keulegan-Carpenter number is relevantly a constant of 0.6 for all cases. The Strouhal number, the mean and the RMS values of the effective drag coefficient in the streamwise and transverse directions are computed for various Reynolds numbers, and the velocity of a rep- resentative point in the turbulent zone is simulated to find the turbulent feature. It is found that the wave-current interaction should be considered as three-dimensional flow when the Reynolds number is high; under wave-current effect, there exists a critical Reynolds number, and when the Reynolds number is smaller than the critical one, current effect on wave can be nearly neglected; conversely, with the Reynolds number increasing, wave-currentstructure interaction is sensitive to the Reynolds number.展开更多

Three out-of-plane spin-polarized currents are injected into a nanodisk through a centered nanocontact and two off-centered nanocontacts, respectively. For current combination (ipl, ip0, ip2) = (-1,1, -1), the trajectory of the vortex core is a peanut-like orbit, but it is an elliptical orbit for (ip1, ip0, ip2) = (1, 1, -1). Moreover, the gyrotropic frequency displays peaks for both current combinations. Analytical calculations based on the Thiele equation show that the changes of frequency can be ascribed mainly to the forces generated by the Oersted field accompanying the currents. We also demonstrate a dependence of eigenfrequency shifts on the direction and distance of the applied currents.展开更多

The results of numerical simulation show that the additional device with flange structure, compared to marine current turbine without additional device, can obtain more output power. However, it brings the inhomogeneity of additional device force as the increasing of effective output power. At same time, due to existence of the flange, two karman vortices are found behind the flange. The low pressure region produced by additional device and flange struc- ture can speed up the flow around the marine current turbine, so as to improve the output power.展开更多

As developments move into deeper water, the fatigue life of the riser can become critical to the whole production system, especially due to the vortex-induced vibration(VIV), which is the key factor to operational longevity. As a result, experimental investigation about VIV of the riser was performed in a large plane pool which is 60 m long, 36 m wide and 6.5 m deep. Experiments were developed to study the influence of current speed and seabed on VIV of SCR. The results show that amplitudes of strain and response frequencies increase with the current speed both in cross-flow(CF) and in-line(IL). When the current speed is high, multi-mode response is observed in the VIV motion. The amplitudes of strain in IL direction are not much smaller than those in CF direction. The seabed has influence on the response frequencies of riser and the positions of damage for riser.展开更多
