The students should receive the cultivation of the professional knowledge, and at the same time, they must have a certain ability of the cross-cultural communication and the level of the professional English. In addition, the national medium and long-term educational reform and development plan (2010 - 2020) also proposed the strategic requirements to improve the quality of the higher education and the level of the internationalization, to promote the comprehensive development of the students. Because of this, the national big colleges and universities are carrying out the reform of the university English teaching in different degrees, and have achieved certain results. But today, in terms of the direction of the educational reform of the university English, the academic circles are still unable to reach an agreement. For example, to set the university courses in English, some scholars believe that because the English levels of the high school graduates enhance unceasingly, the courses with the language teaching as the main contents cannot meet the needs of the students, which need to be reduced or even eliminated, and should be replaced by the bilingual teaching with the liberal education as the contents. Also some scholars advocated that the orientation of the university English teaching in the future should be the ESP teaching or the academic English teaching, rather than the traditional English teaching for the humanities.展开更多

Drawing upon earlier research on conceptual frameworks, the knowledge base of pre-service teachers is examined through research into the curriculums in TEFL education across diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate levels. A comparative study of the curriculum structures in the education of TEFL teachers reveals a number of key areas of concern: the main hindrance to the development of a stronger knowledge base of pre-service teachers lies in the serious shortage of pedagogical content knowledge, fundamental pedagogical knowledge that are currently available, as well as with the overall inadequacy of practicum hours. It strongly argues for the breadth versus depth in course design and calls for the imperative to reconceptualize the knowledge base of pre-service teachers.展开更多

The drive for sustainability in higher education has become institutionalized in many college campuses in the form of offices of sustainability, as well as membership in the American Association for Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). In parallel, but not always in concert, are more grass-roots efforts by students to promote sustainability through recycling programs, urban agriculture, and similar initiatives. Students are often frustrated between the classroom lessons they learn about sustainability and the slow adoption of sustainable practices in the “real-world,” including on campus. In order to address this issue, faculty have begun to engage students in the sustainability challenges facing their own campuses. The Journal of Green Building showcases these projects in the New Directions in Teaching and Research section of the journal. As part of this series, this article will highlight a course at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst in which students engage in green infrastructure planning projects for the campus.展开更多
