The possibility of determining the integrity of a real structure subjected to non-invasive and non-destructive monitoring, such as that carried out by a series of accelerometers placed on the structure,is certainly a goal of extreme and current interest. In the present work, the results obtained from the processing of experimental data of a real structure are shown. The analyzed structure is a lattice structure approximately 9 m high, monitored with 18 uniaxial accelerometers positioned in pairs on 9 different levels. The data used refer to continuous monitoring that lasted for a total of 1 year, during which minor damage was caused to the structure by alternatively removing some bracings and repositioning them in the structure. Two methodologies detecting damage based on decomposition techniques of the acquired data were used and tested,as well as a methodology combining the two techniques. The results obtained are extremely interesting,as all the minor damage caused to the structure was identified by the processing methods used, based solely on the monitored data and without any knowledge of the real structure being analyzed. The results use 15 acquisitions in environmental conditions lasting 10 min each,a reasonable amount of time to get immediate feedback on possible damage to the structure. 展开更多

Hybrid composite materials combine different fibers in preform and take advantages of different mechanical behaviors for improving ballistic impact damage tolerances. Here we report ballistic impact damages of plain-woven laminates with different hybrids and stacking sequences.Three kinds of hybrid laminates,i.e.,carbon/Kevlar,carbon/ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene(UHMWPE),and UHMWPE/Kevlar,had been prepared and tested in ballistic penetration with fragment simulating projectiles(FSP).The residual velocities of the projectiles and impact damage morphologies of the laminates have been obtained to show impact energy absorptions for the different hybrid schemes.A microstructural model of the hybrid laminates had also been established to show impact damage mechanisms with finite element analysis(FEA).We found that the UHMWPE/Kevlar hybrid laminates with Kevlar layers as the front face have the highest energy absorption capacity, followed by the carbon/Kevlar hybrid laminates with carbon layers as the front face. The main damage modes are fiber breakages, matrix crack and interlayer delamination. The ballistic damage evolutions from the FEA results show that the major damage is shear failure for front layers, while tension failure for the back layers. We expect that the ballistic impact performance could be improved from the different hybrid schemes. 展开更多

Three treatments including mechanical damage, Lymantria dispar attacking and daubing oral secretions of the in-sects on mechanically damaged cut were conducted on Populus simonii譖opulus pyramibalis c.v. in order to find the genuine reason leading to effective resistance response of tree to insects attacking. The release situation of the induced volatiles of the plant was analyzed by TCT-GC/MS at 24 hours after damages. The results indicated that some of the volatiles such as (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate, decanal, 3-hexenyl isovalerate, nonanal, ocimene, and 2-cyanobutane can be induced by both insects attack-ing and mechanical damage, while 2,6-dimethyl-1,3,5,7-octatetraene, 2-methyl-6-methylene-1,7-octadien-3-one, caryophyllene, Isovaleronitrile, diethyl-methyl-benzamide, and dicapryl phthalate were only induced by insects attacking. Such difference in volatiles was attributed to that there existed active components in oral sections of the larvae of Lymantria dispar 展开更多

Shape memory alloy (SMA) reinforced smart structure can be used to make structural shape and strength selfadapted and structural damage self-restrained. Although SMA smart structures without damages were extensively studied, researches on SMA smart structures with damages have rarely been reported thus far. In this paper, thermo-mechanical behaviors of SMA fiber reinforced smart structures with damages are analyzed through a shear lag model and the variational principle, Mathematical expressions of the meso-displacement field and the stress-strain field of a typical element with damages are obtained, and a failure criterion for interface failure between SMA fibers and matrix is established, which is applied to an example. Results presented herein may provide a theoretical foundation for further studies on integrity of SMA smart structures. 展开更多

The protective effect of biphenyl dimethyl dicarboxylate (DDB) on chemically induced damages was studied in isolated suspended rat hepatocytes. The experimental results showed that DDB (200μg/106 cells) efficiently protected the hepatocytes against carbon tetrachloride (CC14 10 mrnol.L-1) and D-galactosamine (1 mmol.L-1) induced damages. Membranal lipid peroxidation (malondialdehyde, MDA formation) and glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT) release from the hepatocytes were markedly decreased. The damage of the cell surfaces of the hepatocytes were also reduced as seen under a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Pretreatment with DDB (300 mg-kg-1) orally ameliorated the reduction of liver glycogen and blood glucose caused by ip injection of D-galactosamine (800 mg-kg-1) in mice. When normal rats were given DDB 300 mg-kg-1 once daily for 10 d, the free ribosomal protein and RNA in the liver increased significantly. These results indicate that DDB is of beneficial effects on both damaged and normal hepatocytes. 展开更多

Damage assessment for slopes using geographical information system(GIS) has been actively carried out by researchers working on several government organizations and research institutes in Korea. In this study, 596 slope damages were examined to identify the types of damage associated with dip angles, dip directions, and heavy rainfall resulting from typhoons in South Korea. Heavy rainfall of 100 mm to 300 mm resulted in 80% at the investigated slope damages. A GIS database was developed for highways, rainfall, soil or rock geometry, and types of damage. A grid of rainfall intensity was generated from the records of maximum daily rainfall. Contours for slope damages and heavy rainfall using optimal GIS mesh dimensions were generated to visualize damage patterns and show substantially strong correlation of rainfall with slope damages. The combination of remote sensing with the GIS pattern recognition process described in this work are being expanded for a new generation of emergency response and rapid decision support systems. 展开更多

Sand damages along the Qinghai-Tibet Railway occur frequently and have spread rapidly since it was completely opened to traffic in 2006. The goal of this study was to understand the effects of sand damages on the railway via meteorological data and in situ observation of wind-blown sand. We selected the Tuotuohe section of this railway as a typical research object, and we systematically investigated its characteristics of sand damages, drift potential, sand-driving wind rose, and their time variation. The direction of sand-drifting wind clearly varies with the season. In winter, the predominant wind blows from the west and lasts for three months, while in summer the frequency of northeasterly wind begins to increase and multi-directional winds also occurs in July. The drift potential in this area is 705.81 VU, which makes this a high-energy wind environment according to Fryberger's definition. The directional variability (RDP/DP) is 0.84 and the resultant drift potential is 590.42 VU with a resultant direction of 89.1°. 展开更多

Hailstorms affect crop yield that depends on the crop species and the phonological time. In this investigation, climatological study of hail fall has been performed through the available dataset in 118 synoptic stations across the country during a period of 20 years (1985-2004) and hail event map was drawn. After analyzing the data and considering the produced maps, regarding the number of hail occurrence in the country, the following provinces respectively illustrate the highest annual mean of hail fall;Chaharmahal-e-bakhtiari, Ilam, Tehran and Kurdistan (about 4 times/yearly). In the next step, using the statistics of the agricultural insurance affairs during 1995-2005, cultivation areas damaged by hail fall in the farms of agricultural strategic products including;irrigated and rain fed wheat, grain, rice, cotton, sugar beet and potato have been studied, and then the classified maps of hail damage have been plotted for each province and crop. The produced maps indicate that most of the damaged area by hail fall has been related to irrigated wheat crop, with an annual average of 12690.8 hectares in the whole country, then the damaged crops were ordered respectively as following: rain fed wheat, sugar beet, potato, grain, cotton and rice. 展开更多

In 2010, the fracking discussion in Germany caused a number of changes in German law, which came into force in 2016.Especially the production of gas had to be regulated. With the legislation amendment, the Subsidence-Area Mining Regulation has been revised, too.The changes expand the compensation of mining damages, especially to the extraction with drilling from the surface and underground storage.Although the Subsidence-Area Mining Regulation has been revised, the area of main influence(subsidence of 10 cm)remains to determine a relevant boundary for mining damages. The determination and prediction of this boundary above caverns are presented in this paper. In addition, further elements of ground movements and their relevance to mine damages are analyzed. The usage of the area of main influence to fix a relevant boundary for mining damages does not correspond to the relevant elements of ground movements.A limit for differences in subsidence(tilt) or horizontal changes in length should be preferred to describe the relevance of mining damages on buildings.Furthermore, this paper outlines the meaning of using the area of main influence to fix a relevant boundary for mining damages. 展开更多

A new Martensitic transformation kinetic model for shape memory alloy (SMA) is proposed based on the phenomenological description of the Martensitic transformation heat flow-temperature curve and on the linear relationship between the partial derivatives of Martensite fraction and of Gbbis free energy with respect to the temperature. A meso-mechanical model is developed to describe the longitudinal stiffness reduction and thermo-dilatation variation of the composites caused by fiber breaking or fiber peeling off the base material. One-dimensional incremental constitutive relation is then established for SMA wire reinforced smart composites with damages by introducing three parameters to respectively describe the extent of fiber breaking, fiber peeling off the base material and interface weakening. The results presented herein may provide a theoretical basis for further studying on SMA smart composites with damages. 展开更多

A few possible damage patterns and the definition of the failure of the smart structures are given. It is pointed out that more attentions should be paid to the functional failures o f smart structures. The effects on the control the static deformation due to par tial debonding of PZT actuators are analyzed by the finite element method. BACKGROUND: Some scholars believed that the neuronal injury after status epilepticus is apoptosis, the main evidence is the changes of expressions of various apoptosis related genes, such as immediate-early gene, p53 gene and genes of bcl-2 family, etc. But there is still no ultrastructural evidence for apoptosis. OBJECTIVE: To observe the ultrastructural damages of mitochondrion and nucleus and the changes of caspase expression in neurons of hippocampal CA3 region in rats with status epilepticus induced by kainic acid. DESIGN: A randomized controlled study. SETTING: Department of Anesthesiology and Department of Neurology, Qilu Hospital of Shandong University. MATERIALS: Seventy-five adult male Wistar rats of 250-300 g, clean degree, were provided by the experimental animal center of Shandong University. Kainic acid was purchased from Sigma Company (USA); rabbit anti-rat polyclonal antibody caspase-3 from Santa Cruz Company (USA). METHODS: The experiments were carried out in the Department of Anesthesiology, Qilu Hospital of Shandong University from October 2005 to February 2006. ① The 75 rats were randomly divided into experimental group (n =45) and control group (n =30). ② Model establishment, convulsion grading and the judging standards for status epilepticus: Rats in the experimental group were given intraperitoneal injection of kainic acid (10 mg/kg), and those in the control group were injected with saline of the same volume. The time of seizure was recorded and their behavioral manifestations were observed, and the seizure was terminated by intraperitoneal injection of diazepam (10 mg/kg). ③ Observation under electron microscope: At 3, 12 and 24 hours after status epilepticus respectively, bilateral hippocampal tissues were taken out, semithin sections of about 75 nm were prepared after fixation, dehydration and embedding, and then observed under H-800 transmission electron microscope. ④ Immunohistochemical detection: Bilateral hippocampi were removed at 3, 12 and 24 hours after status epilepticus respectively, the fixation, dehydration, transparence, wax immersion and embedding were performed, then serial sections of CA3 region were immunohistochemically determined by the SABC method. Leica QWinV3 image analytical software was applied, then the average number and average gray value of positive cells were calculated. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Results of observation under electron microscope, that of immunohistochemical staining of neurons in hippocampal CA3 region; Comparison of number of caspase-3 positive cells and gray value. RESULTS: All the 75 Wistar rats were involved in the analysis of results. ① Results of observation under electron microscope: At 3 hours after status epilepticus, swelling crista and membranous disintegration were observed under electron microscope. At 24 hours, obvious nuclear changes occurred, and manifested as the side-aggegation of chromatins. ② Results of immunohistochemical detection: In the experimental group, the number of caspase-3 positive cells at 3 hours after status epilepticus had no obvious difference as compared with that in the control group (P > 0.05); At 12 hours, the number and gray value of caspase-3 positive cells in the experimental group were higher than those in the control group (10.49±0.68 vs. 5.33±0.43; 45.57±2.27 vs. 19.79±0.33, P < 0.05), the same results were also observed at 24 hours (37.36±0.57 vs. 5.12±0.47; 115.24±1.22 vs. 18.73±0.42, P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: In the rat models of status epilepticus induced by kainic acid, mitochondrial damage was earlier than the increase of caspase-3 expression and nuclear changes, which suggested that mitochondrion was the key link for the neuronal death after status epilepticus. 展开更多

A number of devastating flood events have oc-curred in the various river basins of Turkey in the last decade. Because floods caused deaths, suffering and extensive damages to both public and private properties in the flood areas, the government had to most of the damage in addi-tion to losing significant revenues due to the consequences of costly social and economic disruption. On the other hand, some social structures such as socioeconomic activities, land-use patterns and hydro-morphological processes are destroyed. Whereas flood control structures are considered as one of the basic strategies that can reduce flood damages and in this context flood protection planning should consider the full range of the hazard mitigation activities. In Turkey, between 1945 and 1990, 737 flooding events were occurred and at least 830 people were killed. In 1998, there was a major flooding in Zonguldak-Bartin region located on north of Turkey. Due to this devastated flooding, people lost their life and numbers of engineer-ing structures built on the river and surrounding area were totally destroyed or heavily damaged. Both side of the canal were covered with muddy soil having 0.10-0.15 m thickness. Cleaning up process took sometimes in the region. In this paper, all these subjects have been investigated in the basin and some engineering proposals have been presented. 展开更多

Set in a strategic enclave in the city of Alicante. It has been transformed over the centuries since its origin, so that nowadays includes numerous buildings inside its area. The fortified area contains several lines bastioned and some medieval and Muslim fronts, composed of quadrangular towers. During the years 2007 and 2008, a research team composed of members from the University of Alicante, the University of Burgos and the Polytechnic University of Catalonia has developed a study on the conservation status of the Castle. This study has been funded through research grants from thc Genemlitat Valenciana (Project GV reference 2007/150), and an agreement with Manuel PeIAez Foundation. We have generated a 3D object of the whole, composed by clouds of millions points, through laser-scanner in order to manage the analysis of the architectural element's conservation status that make up the huge fortified complex. This tool reduced greatly the architectural survey work, providing an extremely accurate. They were developed through the program Pointools View, generating JPEG files, which were imported from Autocad. Later we undertook a comprehensive making of photos -- some 7,000 photographs, which we linked to the 3D object. Thus we have immediate access to the photographs of each element of the Castle from the program Pointools View with a simple click on each 3D element. The graphic representation of damages was done on screen with programs Pointools View and Autocad open simultaneously. This technique has meant better accuracy in the study of conservation status and has greatly reduced the time commitment. 展开更多

Based on the single-factor market model, this paper examines the confirmation basis and measurement of the losses arising from systematic risk in the civil damages of false statements. The paper argues that the systematic risk not only affects the investment in securities during times of financial crisis, but also causes losses in daily securities trading. The paper carries out an empirical analysis on the existence of fl coefficient for China's listed companies within a period of one year, and examines the impact of systematic risk on the losses of investors. The civil damages of false statements should take full account of the losses arising from systematic risk. After analysis, the paper uses the correlation coefficient to represent the ratio of losses arising from systematic risk of all the transactions of a particular stock during a certain period of time, and tries to develop two methods to measure the damages after adjusting the losses caused by the systematic risk. The paper has a theoretical foundation for the estimation of losses caused by systematic risk, and matches the risks and returns. The result of the paper has provided an effective method of calculation in the determination of reasonable damages in the case of China Langfang Development Co., Ltd. 展开更多
