The conflation of linguistic competencies with ideological and political educational paradigms presents unique opportunities and challenges for English language teaching(ELT)in our increasingly interconnected world.This research seeks to address the role of cross-cultural critical thinking within the landscape of English pedagogy,framed by the imperatives of ideological and political education.Employing a multi-method approach,including thematic content analysis and action research,the study proposes a pedagogical model designed to integrate transcultural discourse and ideologically reflective practices into the conventional ELT curriculum.This paper argues for a reimagined approach to teaching English that encourages students to engage with diverse cultural perspectives and develop a nuanced understanding of global issues.

A Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis of Lingnan Cultural Promotional Videos on Social Media

In recent years,more and more directors of culture and tourism have taken part in the promotion of local cultural tourism by cross-dressing,talent shows,and pushing their limits on self-media platforms.This study investigates short videos of Lingnan culture promoted by directors general and deputy directors general of the Culture,Radio,Television,Tourism,and Sports Bureau of counties and cities in Guangdong Province on social media by the method of multimodal critical discourse analysis.The analysis of 33 videos shows that Lingnan culture is a domineering and confident culture,historical culture,graceful and elegant culture,and vibrant and active culture.Domineering and confident culture is embedded in the utterances and behaviors of the directors general or deputy directors general in the video.Historical culture is realized through the conversation with historical figures through time travel.Graceful and elegant culture is constructed in the depiction of sceneries and the depiction of characters’manners.Vibrant and active culture is represented in the depiction of the characters’actional process and analytical process.

Discussion about contemporary Chinese cultural criticism and mass culture

Contemporary Chinese cultural criticism is facing traditional three factors. A Variety of Cultures Represented in English Language Textbooks： A Critical Study at Saudi University

Textbooks material is one of the important issues that are worthy to investigate in order to enrich student＇s engagement and interaction in EFL （English as a Foreign Language） classrooms. In this study, the author argues that textbooks materials used in academic institutions may well take a significant part in generating an active environment in EEL classrooms. It is believed that more opportunities will be created for students to be more involved, active, and able to understand the content being addressed more effectively. Yet, by looking at the textbooks being utilised （at a university context where the author teaches）, one can notice that student＇s culture （Eastern） is to a large extent missing in these textbooks, most of these books instead represent dominantly ＂Western＂ culture namely American and British cultures. This can deafly be depicted by topics discussed, pictures, clothing, names, and many other issues portrayed in these textbooks. This study is an attempt to challenge and problematize such domination of Western cultures portrayed in the content of English textbooks used in academic institutions not merely within Saudi Arabia but also extended to other countries and nations in the world.

Henry James is one of the most important novelists and critics in British and American literature. He spent much of his youth in plenty of European countries where he studied with tutors and governesses. Since the 1980 s, more and more Western critics have started to use various critical theories such as political sociology, gender identity, and racial discrimination to study his novels.The author attempts to analyze The Turn of the Screw from cultural criticism. Cultural Criticism is not an independent theory. It is often interwoven with social, political, psychological, and historical contexts of a novel. The author first uses political sociology to analyze class division and power structure of the Victorian time. And then use social psychology to analyze the psyche of the governess and proves that it is the governess' sexual hysteria that leads to the fall of the two children.The author argues that Cultural Criticism seems to be a more suitable and effective way to analyze the story.

Chinese Western Cultural Relations＂ A Critical Analysis

This study, within the theoretical framework of Critical Discourse Analysis, aims to explore how culture represents language, causing cultural differences between the East and the West. With a set of questions, a qualitative method is employed to collect the data in this study. By examining the 189 theoretical studies and investigating cultural and linguistic features, this study will show how culture influences culture and language, while the content analysis is completely excluded due to the limited time and space. The data will be analyzed in light of the critical discourse analysis showing how social subjects are constructed in various discourses with their personal terms. A historical change between the East and the West is the return of the ancient Silk Roads at the early 21st century. Social changes can be seen when studying their cultural relations. Language is easily abstracted from culture. Both claim special reality of what they are. This article clearly explains how the discourse in the Chinese Western cultural relations generally reflects the social practice, the ideology, and power relations in social structures in which various discourses were published at the time of reporting. Finally, English and Chinese belong to two different language families representing linguistic differences. This makes learning English a serious challenge for Chinese native speakers.

The ＂Pictorial Turn＂ as Crisis and the Necessity of a Critique of Visual Culture

The ＂Pictorial＂ or ＂Iconic Turn＂ is a central issue in the contemporary theory of images and visual cultural studies. Should the theories concerning the ＂Iconic Turn＂ and formulated in the last 20 years by scholars such as Gottfried Boehm, William Mitchell, Hans Belting be taken as critical theories of crisis？ Is the currently experienced ＂turn towards images＂ （and their progressive rehabilitation after a long standing philosophical and theological rejection） a sign and symptom of some crisis of people＇s relation with images, language and, generally speaking, with the representation forms of reality？ The main hypothesis of this essay envisages two sets of problems： first, the analysis of the relation between the possible idea of turning point and the concept of crisis; secondly, the thorough investigation of the relation connecting the iconic turn to the project of ＂critical iconology＂ or ＂critique of visual culture,＂ as outlined by Hans Belting and William Mitchell. From the interpretation of the ＂Iconic Turn＂ as situation of crisis and aesthetic, anthropological, and epistemological transformation follows the need for the sciences of image to provide a ＂critical iconology＂ in order to be able to theoretically reformulate the ideological and political presuppositions of some dominant contemporary forms of visual representation.

中国舞蹈艺术的审美文化观——内外部相融的舞蹈研究方法论探讨

舞蹈创作和批评研究既包括“生命体”身体意识和时空关系的内部规律探讨,也要阐释舞蹈与人类其他社会实践的外部规律联系,内外部结合的方法论很有意义。舞蹈分析与动作分析并非相同概念。舞蹈创作和研究从业者除了提升动作分析理论,还应密切关注新的编舞走向和跨学科的舞蹈研究趋势。20世纪八九十年代以来,西方舞蹈学者的舞蹈分析框架,融入了文化研究,揭示出仅作动作分析或内部研究的局限性;中国舞蹈学者的元素分析、形态分析也与舞蹈文化密切相关。在全球在地化和全媒体时代,作为一种方法论,舞蹈艺术的“审美文化观”将舞蹈创作到批评视为审美文化活动,承袭了古今中西文化汇通的中国美学、文学、理论界和舞蹈学的相关研究,自律论、他律论与通律论相辅相成,重视具体的真实的人本体,一方面强调侧重内部研究的“跨媒介性”视角,另一方面也倡导将内外部打通的“跨文化”观,尝试既在审美中看舞蹈文化,也在文化中看舞蹈审美,是一种具有“中国式现代化”路径的文艺观和方法论。“点线面体”充分融合的审美文化四面体图式,基于艾布拉姆斯“四要素”三角和格里斯沃尔德“文化菱形”理论基础,融入拉班动作分析四面体思路,并与中国人文社科学术界倡导多年的“审美文化”研究相通。

全媒时代的文艺批评

作为传媒与文艺相结合的产物,媒体批评以其时效性、对话性与交互性特点,弥补了专业批评与协会批评的不足,但因门槛较低,其发展生态不尽如人意,更在市场化运作中暴露出视野缺损与主体缺位的问题。一些媒体从业者缺乏自觉的批评意识和严正的批评立场,跟进式学习动力又相对匮乏,使得其所作批评难免格式化、扁平化,由此造成批评的“失范”与“失效”。尤其在数字化时代,技术转向形成的“全媒体”时空架构重构了文艺生产与传播的环境,使媒体批评更趋活跃,形式也更丰富。然而在技术、资本的他律下,其自主性和责任担当的不足也显现出来。故随着人工智能驱动的全媒体时代的到来,媒体批评须注意不能失去方向感和判断力,不能缺失理想,尤须保持对文艺的信仰,服膺精神的力量,同时加强理论建设与体系构建,这样才能克服碎片化和娱乐化,落实开放性与包容性,才能以深厚的学养、纯正的趣味和敏锐的感悟发掘优质文艺,打开真正契合大众需求、又超越其日常认知的审美空间,从而在最大限度地激活媒体这个“第五要素”的基础上,发挥价值导向与思想引领作用,在推动文艺的动态平衡与良性发展中重建批评主体、繁荣批评事业。

批判诗学:开端、意图与方法——赵勇教授访谈录

批判诗学的早期开端也许可以追溯到《介入偏离与阅读倾斜》,因为此文隐含着20世纪80年代的某种问题意识。而所谓介入,自然是来自于萨特。在“后理论”时代,当越来越多的作家、学者具有了某种“后知识分子”的特征时,把萨特的介入拿过来就更具有某种现实意义。至于批判诗学形成的原因,其一是现实层面,其二在学理层面。前者意味着要直面中国当下文学批评和文化批评的现状,进而尽可能解决其批判精神不断流失的问题。后者则涉及文化诗学,是对童庆炳先生文艺理论思想的批判性继承。受阿多诺、伽达默尔和巴赫金等人的理论启发,可以把“亦此亦彼”“二律背反”“间性思维”等看成是批判诗学的方法或路径。而既要向阿多诺学习,又要向萨特取经;既要有理论深度,又要能通俗易懂,大概是批判诗学的批评实践的基本构想和努力目标。
