Just as the cliff serves as a demarcation between two different worlds, there seems to the protagonist in The Catcher in the Rye the dichotomies between innocence and corruption, children and adults. While these dualisms are projected in the story, they are also deconstructed and the characterization of Holden clearly shows the instability of those dualisms. 展开更多

When normal, Lear can not even distinguish flattery and pat answers from sincerity and true love. While considered as insane, he learns to take care of the wretched and is able to discover the truth in life. The key concept of anti-logo-centrism in deconstructive criticism provokes us to reconsider the boundary between madness and reason, and traditional Western philosophical ideas, thus enabling us to appreciate the despised madness in King Lear from the perspective of philosophy. 展开更多

Contextualizing his Foe(1986) in the backdrop of South African post- apartheid, Coetzee manipulates multifarious postmodern narrative ploys to purloin, rewrite and widen the canon Robinson Crusoe. In plural demonstrations of dualistic patterns, this novel emphatically unravels Coetzee's textual subversion of the traditional overarching"western logocentrism"or"metaphysics of presence"via catechizing and debilitating the orthodoxy of the white supremacy as well as the male superiority. This detailed analysis, giving a Derridean reading, purports to anatomize and deconstruct the binary oppositions of Self/ Other,White/Black, and Man/Woman among Cruso, Friday and Susan Barton, and reach Coetzee's veritable concerns: to dissolve the Imperialist hierarchy and hegemony, to waive racial enclosure, and to build a dialogue that open up a real respect and coexistence for both the centered and the marginalized. 展开更多

Francis Scott Fitzgerald(1896-1940)is universally recognized as one of the greatest American writers of the 20th century. He is also considered a member of the“Lost Generation”of the 1920s,and with the publication of The Great Gatsby he was catapulted to fame by a night which gives a concrete illustration to the Jazz Age.Taking the novel as a case in point, this paper, based on the theory of deconstruction, seeks to undertake a deconstructive interpretation towards the binary oppositions on which the projects rest—dream and reality, and the past and the present,in order to subvert logos-centrism represented by Gatsby’s disillusionment with his American dream. 展开更多

Writing as a Supplement: Jacques Derrida's Deconstructive Reading of Rousseau's Confessions

The present study constitutes a critical appraisal of the deconstructive reading of Rousseau's Confessions that Derrida undertakes in the second part of Of Grammatology. In this examination, the author will first list some of the significations into which Derrida disperses (forced, as he asserts himself, by an "inassimilable residue" in the text itself) the meaning that he has already construed as apparently simple during the first moment of deconstructive reading (i.e., "the doubling commentary"); the author will then go on to enquire into the operations which enable Derrida to arrive at these self-conflicting significations. The main aim of this essay is to demonstrate that it is not language alone that disables the philosophy of Rousseau and enables the philosophy of Derrida. When Derrida attempts to support his philosophy through an analysis of Rousseau's theory of language and the alleged contradictions in Rousseau's texts, he misinterprets basic tenets of these texts in order to make them conform to the presuppositions of the deconstructive approach. The "reversal" and "displacement" of metaphysical conceptuality in the text of the Confessions is made possible after the text has had meanings transposed into it from a plurality of other texts. Derrida attributes to the text significations he discovers by construing, explicating and over-reading passages that occur elsewhere in Rousseau's total oeuvre (especially in the Essay on the Origin of Languages). 展开更多

Deconstruction, holding a view that there is no single explanation of the meaning, started to be applied in translation practices in the 1980s.It challenges the faithfulness of traditional translation standard, but creates a new framework for translation studies,by rejecting the determinacy of meaning and emphasizing the subjectivity of translators. This research aims to take a decon⁃structive reading on E.E.Cummings’s l(a and its Chinese version,in order to explore the translation strategies of visual poetry like l(a and prove the availability of translation studies from the perspective of deconstruction translation theory. After the illustration on the uncertainty of meaning and the subjectivity of the translator in analysis sections, the chosen Chinese version of l(a can be proved to reflect the original ideas and put forward the reborn concepts. The case study also states the practicability of deconstruc⁃tion translation theory for translation studies. It is hoped that this research can act as an inspiration for further studies on literary translation, especially for visual poetry. 展开更多

Jacques Derrida's engagement with Jean-Jacques Rousseau in the second part of Of Grammatology constitutes the most systematic, extensive example of deconstructive reading. Nevertheless, the problem of whether Derrida reproduces Rousseau's basic claims adequately has remained a peripheral concern. This has meant that this may constitute a misreading and the consequences that this would have for the deconstructive operation itself have not adequately examined. Hence, this enquiry into Derrida's reading of Rousseau centers upon the extent to which Derrida distorts Rousseau's text in order to be able to confirm deconstruction's radical theoretical positions. 展开更多

HIV/AIDS has been one of the most serious health concerns in South Africa over the past 30 years.Novels such as Welcome to Our Hillbrow,Dog Eat Dog,and After Tears are literary responses to the profound shame and fear inflicted by the epidemic on individuals and society. These AIDS narratives serve as a means to deconstruct politicized discourses about the disease. They scrutinize the stereotype that the voracious sexuality of black men is the primary cause of AIDS and challenges the xenophobic notion of contagious foreigners prevalent in post-apartheid South Africa.Additionally, the novels critically examine and satirize the denialist discourse propagated by incompetent politicians who have failed to contain the virus in post-apartheid South Africa.By representing the conflicting voices surrounding HIV/AIDS,these writings vividly depict the social and political landscape of the era. 展开更多

"Deconstruction",coined by French philosopher Jacques Derrida in the 1960s,attempts to subvert the tradition of Western philosophy with "logo centrism" as its primary target.Deconstruction's concern on binary oppositions inspires the feminists and provides them with the philosophical ground to understand gender inequality and rebel against the classic dualities of Western "phallocentrism".However, the noticeable political orientation of feminism and its firm humanitarian position compose a fundamental disagreement with the negativism and nihilism of deconstructive philosophy. This essay aims to trace the development of Western feminism at the same time identify some of the agreements and conflicts between the two theoretical trends in postmodernism;moreover,it intends to propose an idealistic attitude in the reconstruction of a harmonious society with gender equality and understanding. 展开更多

Deconstruction, advocated by Jacques Derrida, is a critic outlook that indicates the pitfall of the philosophical dichotomy in Western convention, revealing the unreliability of human language and conception. Hawthorne's The Minister's Black Veil, with the obscurity and uncertainty in its disclosure, offers the feasibility for a deconstruction study. The binary oppositions and its deconstruction of the "black veil" in perspective of persona, idea and existence contribute to the void perception and activities of Mr.Hooper, the protagonist as well as the author's literary practice. 展开更多
