This study assesses the suitability of convolutional neural networks(CNNs) for downscaling precipitation over East Africa in the context of seasonal forecasting. To achieve this, we design a set of experiments that compare different CNN configurations and deployed the best-performing architecture to downscale one-month lead seasonal forecasts of June–July–August–September(JJAS) precipitation from the Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology Climate Forecast System version 1.0(NUIST-CFS1.0) for 1982–2020. We also perform hyper-parameter optimization and introduce predictors over a larger area to include information about the main large-scale circulations that drive precipitation over the East Africa region, which improves the downscaling results. Finally, we validate the raw model and downscaled forecasts in terms of both deterministic and probabilistic verification metrics, as well as their ability to reproduce the observed precipitation extreme and spell indicator indices. The results show that the CNN-based downscaling consistently improves the raw model forecasts, with lower bias and more accurate representations of the observed mean and extreme precipitation spatial patterns. Besides, CNN-based downscaling yields a much more accurate forecast of extreme and spell indicators and reduces the significant relative biases exhibited by the raw model predictions. Moreover, our results show that CNN-based downscaling yields better skill scores than the raw model forecasts over most portions of East Africa. The results demonstrate the potential usefulness of CNN in downscaling seasonal precipitation predictions over East Africa, particularly in providing improved forecast products which are essential for end users. 展开更多

The motivation for this study is that the quality of deep fakes is constantly improving, which leads to the need to develop new methods for their detection. The proposed Customized Convolutional Neural Network method involves extracting structured data from video frames using facial landmark detection, which is then used as input to the CNN.The customized Convolutional Neural Network method is the date augmented-based CNN model to generate‘fake data’or‘fake images’.This study was carried out using Python and its libraries. We used 242 films from the dataset gathered by the Deep Fake Detection Challenge,of which 199 were made up and the remaining 53 were real.Ten seconds were allotted for each video. There were 318 videos used in all,199 of which were fake and 119 of which were real. Our proposedmethod achieved a testing accuracy of 91.47%,loss of 0.342,and AUC score of 0.92,outperforming two alternative approaches,CNN and MLP-CNN.Furthermore,our method succeeded in greater accuracy than contemporary models such as XceptionNet,Meso-4,EfficientNet-BO,MesoInception-4,VGG-16,and DST-Net.The novelty of this investigation is the development of a new Convolutional Neural Network(CNN)learning model that can accurately detect deep fake face photos. 展开更多

Graph Convolutional Neural Networks(GCNs)have been widely used in various fields due to their powerful capabilities in processing graph-structured data. However,GCNs encounter significant challenges when applied to scale-free graphs with power-law distributions, resulting in substantial distortions. Moreover, most of the existing GCN models are shallow structures, which restricts their ability to capture dependencies among distant nodes and more refined high-order node features in scale-free graphs with hierarchical structures. To more broadly and precisely apply GCNs to real-world graphs exhibiting scale-free or hierarchical structures and utilize multi-level aggregation of GCNs for capturing high-level information in local representations,we propose the Hyperbolic Deep Graph Convolutional Neural Network(HDGCNN),an end-to-end deep graph representation learning framework that can map scale-free graphs from Euclidean space to hyperbolic space. In HDGCNN,we define the fundamental operations of deep graph convolutional neural networks in hyperbolic space.Additionally,we introduce a hyperbolic feature transformation method based on identity mapping and a dense connection scheme based on a novel non-local message passing framework. In addition,we present a neighborhood aggregation method that combines initial structural featureswith hyperbolic attention coefficients.Through the above methods,HDGCNN effectively leverages both the structural features and node features of graph data, enabling enhanced exploration of non-local structural features and more refined node features in scale-free or hierarchical graphs.Experimental results demonstrate that HDGCNN achieves remarkable performance improvements over state-ofthe-art GCNs in node classification and link prediction tasks, even when utilizing low-dimensional embedding representations.Furthermore, when compared to shallow hyperbolic graph convolutional neural network models,HDGCNN exhibits notable advantages and performance enhancements. 展开更多

In recent years, there has been significant research on the application of deep learning(DL)in topology optimization(TO)to accelerate structural design. However, these methods have primarily focused on solving binary TO problems, and effective solutions for multi-material topology optimization(MMTO)which requires a lot of computing resources are still lacking. Therefore, this paper proposes the framework of multiphase topology optimization using deep learning to accelerate MMTO design. The framework employs convolutional neural network(CNN)to construct a surrogate model for solving MMTO,and the obtained surrogate model can rapidly generate multi-material structure topologies in negligible time without any iterations. The performance evaluation results show that the proposed method not only outputs multi-material topologies with clear material boundary but also reduces the calculation cost with high prediction accuracy.Additionally,in order to find a more reasonable modeling method for MMTO,this paper studies the characteristics of surrogate modeling as regression task and classification task.Through the training of 297 models, our findings show that the regression task yields slightly better results than the classification task in most cases.Furthermore,The results indicate that the prediction accuracy is primarily influenced by factors such as the TO problem, material category, and data scale.Conversely, factors such as the domain size and the material property have minimal impact on the accuracy. 展开更多

Geopolymer concrete emerges as a promising avenue for sustainable development and offers an effective solution to environmental problems. Its attributes as a non-toxic,low-carbon,and economical substitute for conventional cement concrete, coupled with its elevated compressive strength and reduced shrinkage properties, position it as a pivotal material for diverse applications spanning from architectural structures to transportation infrastructure. In this context, this study sets out the task of using machine learning(ML)algorithms to increase the accuracy and interpretability of predicting the compressive strength of geopolymer concrete in the civil engineering field. To achieve this goal,a new approach using convolutional neural networks(CNNs)has been adopted. This study focuses on creating a comprehensive dataset consisting of compositional and strength parameters of 162 geopolymer concrete mixes, all containing Class F fly ash.The selection of optimal input parameters is guided by two distinct criteria. The first criterion leverages insights garnered from previous research on the influence of individual features on compressive strength. The second criterion scrutinizes the impact of these features within the model’s predictive framework.Key to enhancing the CNN model’s performance is the meticulous determination of the optimal hyperparameters.Through a systematic trial-and-error process, the study ascertains the ideal number of epochs for data division and the optimal value of k for k-fold cross-validation—a technique vital to the model’s robustness. The model’s predictive prowess is rigorously assessed via a suite of performance metrics and comprehensive score analyses.Furthermore, the model’s adaptability is gauged by integrating a secondary dataset into its predictive framework, facilitating a comparative evaluation against conventional prediction methods. To unravel the intricacies of the CNN model’s learning trajectory,a loss plot is deployed to elucidate its learning rate. The study culminates in compelling findings that underscore the CNN model’s accurate prediction of geopolymer concrete compressive strength. To maximize the dataset’s potential, the application of bivariate plots unveils nuanced trends and interactions among variables, fortifying the consistency with earlier research.Evidenced by promising prediction accuracy, the study’s outcomes hold significant promise in guiding the development of innovative geopolymer concrete formulations, thereby reinforcing its role as an eco-conscious and robust construction material. The findings prove that the CNN model accurately estimated geopolymer concrete’s compressive strength. The results show that the prediction accuracy is promising and can be used for the development of new geopolymer concrete mixes. The outcomes not only underscore the significance of leveraging technology for sustainable construction practices but also pave the way for innovation and efficiency in the field of civil engineering. 展开更多

Oscillation detection has been a hot research topic in industries due to the high incidence of oscillation loops and their negative impact on plant profitability.Although numerous automatic detection techniques have been proposed, most of them can only address part of the practical difficulties. An oscillation is heuristically defined as a visually apparent periodic variation. However, manual visual inspection is labor-intensive and prone to missed detection.Convolutional neural networks(CNNs),inspired by animal visual systems, have been raised with powerful feature extraction capabilities. In this work,an exploration of the typical CNN models for visual oscillation detection is performed.Specifically,we tested MobileNet-V1,ShuffleNet-V2,Efficient Net-B0,and GhostNet models, and found that such a visual framework is well-suited for oscillation detection. The feasibility and validity of this framework are verified utilizing extensive numerical and industrial cases.Compared with state-of-theart oscillation detectors, the suggested framework is more straightforward and more robust to noise and mean-nonstationarity.In addition, this framework generalizes well and is capable of handling features that are not present in the training data, such as multiple oscillations and outliers. 展开更多

In convolutional neural networks, pooling methods are used to reduce both the size of the data and the number of parameters after the convolution of the models. These methods reduce the computational amount of convolutional neural networks, making the neural network more efficient.Maximum pooling, average pooling, and minimum pooling methods are generally used in convolutional neural networks. However, these pooling methods are not suitable for all datasets used in neural network applications. In this study,a new pooling approach to the literature is proposed to increase the efficiency and success rates of convolutional neural networks. This method, which we call MAM(Maximum Average Minimum)pooling,is more interactive than other traditional maximum pooling, average pooling, and minimum pooling methods and reduces data loss by calculating the more appropriate pixel value. The proposed MAM pooling method increases the performance of the neural network by calculating the optimal value during the training of convolutional neural networks. To determine the success accuracy of the proposed MAM pooling method and compare it with other traditional pooling methods, training was carried out on the LeNet-5 model using CIFAR-10,CIFAR-100,and MNIST datasets.According to the results obtained, the proposed MAM pooling method performed better than the maximum pooling, average pooling, and minimum pooling methods in all pool sizes on three different datasets. 展开更多

In this paper,we utilized the deep convolutional neural network D-LinkNet,a model for semantic segmentation,to analyze the Himawari-8 satellite data captured from 16 channels at a spatial resolution of 0.5 km,with a focus on the area over the Yellow Sea and the Bohai Sea(32°-42°N,117°-127°E).The objective was to develop an algorithm for fusing and segmenting multi-channel images from geostationary meteorological satellites, specifically for monitoring sea fog in this region.Firstly, the extreme gradient boosting algorithm was adopted to evaluate the data from the 16 channels of the Himawari-8 satellite for sea fog detection, and we found that the top three channels in order of importance were channels 3,4,and 14,which were fused into false color daytime images, while channels 7,13,and 15 were fused into false color nighttime images.Secondly, the simple linear iterative super-pixel clustering algorithm was used for the pixel-level segmentation of false color images, and based on super-pixel blocks, manual sea-fog annotation was performed to obtain fine-grained annotation labels. The deep convolutional neural network D-LinkNet was built on the ResNet backbone and the dilated convolutional layers with direct connections were added in the central part to form a string-and-combine structure with five branches having different depths and receptive fields. Results show that the accuracy rate of fog area(proportion of detected real fog to detected fog)was 66.5%,the recognition rate of fog zone(proportion of detected real fog to real fog or cloud cover)was 51.9%,and the detection accuracy rate(proportion of samples detected correctly to total samples)was 93.2%. 展开更多

Nowadays, the amount of wed data is increasing at a rapid speed, which presents a serious challenge to the web monitoring.Text sentiment analysis,an important research topic in the area of natural language processing,is a crucial task in the web monitoring area. The accuracy of traditional text sentiment analysis methods might be degraded in dealing with mass data.Deep learning is a hot research topic of the artificial intelligence in the recent years.By now, several research groups have studied the sentiment analysis of English texts using deep learning methods. In contrary, relatively few works have so far considered the Chinese text sentiment analysis toward this direction. In this paper,a method for analyzing the Chinese text sentiment is proposed based on the convolutional neural network(CNN)in deep learning in order to improve the analysis accuracy. The feature values of the CNN after the training process are nonuniformly distributed. In order to overcome this problem,a method for normalizing the feature values is proposed. Moreover, the dimensions of the text features are optimized through simulations. Finally,a method for updating the learning rate in the training process of the CNN is presented in order to achieve better performances.Experiment results on the typical datasets indicate that the accuracy of the proposed method can be improved compared with that of the traditional supervised machine learning methods,e.g.,the support vector machine method. 展开更多

Liver tumors segmentation from computed tomography (CT) images is an essential task for diagnosis and treatments of liver cancer. However, it is difficult owing to the variability of appearances, fuzzy boundaries, heterogeneous densities, shapes and sizes of lesions. In this paper, an automatic method based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) is presented to segment lesions from CT images. The CNNs is one of deep learning models with some convolutional filters which can learn hierarchical features from data. We compared the CNNs model to popular machine learning algorithms: AdaBoost, Random Forests (RF), and support vector machine (SVM). These classifiers were trained by handcrafted features containing mean, variance, and contextual features. Experimental evaluation was performed on 30 portal phase enhanced CT images using leave-one-out cross validation. The average Dice Similarity Coefficient (DSC), precision, and recall achieved of 80.06% ± 1.63%, 82.67% ± 1.43%, and 84.34% ± 1.61%, respectively. The results show that the CNNs method has better performance than other methods and is promising in liver tumor segmentation. 展开更多

Providing autonomous systems with an effective quantity and quality of information from a desired task is challenging. In particular, autonomous vehicles, must have a reliable vision of their workspace to robustly accomplish driving functions. Speaking of machine vision, deep learning techniques, and specifically convolutional neural networks, have been proven to be the state of the art technology in the field. As these networks typically involve millions of parameters and elements, designing an optimal architecture for deep learning structures is a difficult task which is globally under investigation by researchers. This study experimentally evaluates the impact of three major architectural properties of convolutional networks, including the number of layers, filters, and filter size on their performance. In this study, several models with different properties are developed, equally trained, and then applied to an autonomous car in a realistic simulation environment. A new ensemble approach is also proposed to calculate and update weights for the models regarding their mean squared error values. Based on design properties, performance results are reported and compared for further investigations. Surprisingly, the number of filters itself does not largely affect the performance efficiency. As a result, proper allocation of filters with different kernel sizes through the layers introduces a considerable improvement in the performance.Achievements of this study will provide the researchers with a clear clue and direction in designing optimal network architectures for deep learning purposes. 展开更多

The only known predictable aggregation of dwarf minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata subsp.) occurs in the Australian offshore waters of the northern Great Barrier Reef in May-August each year. The identification of individual whales is required for research on the whales’ population characteristics and for monitoring the potential impacts of tourism activities, including commercial swims with the whales. At present, it is not cost-effective for researchers to manually process and analyze the tens of thousands of underwater images collated after each observation/tourist season, and a large data base of historical non-identified imagery exists. This study reports the first proof of concept for recognizing individual dwarf minke whales using the Deep Learning Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN).The “off-the-shelf” Image net-trained VGG16 CNN was used as the feature-encoder of the perpixel sematic segmentation Automatic Minke Whale Recognizer (AMWR). The most frequently photographed whale in a sample of 76 individual whales (MW1020) was identified in 179 images out of the total 1320 images provid-ed. Training and image augmentation procedures were developed to compen-sate for the small number of available images. The trained AMWR achieved 93% prediction accuracy on the testing subset of 36 positive/MW1020 and 228 negative/not-MW1020 images, where each negative image contained at least one of the other 75 whales. Furthermore on the test subset, AMWR achieved 74% precision, 80% recall, and 4% false-positive rate, making the presented approach comparable or better to other state-of-the-art individual animal recognition results. 展开更多

Enabling high mobility applications in millimeter wave(mmWave)based systems opens up a slew of new possibilities, including vehicle communi-cations in addition to wireless virtual/augmented reality. The narrow beam usage in addition to the millimeter waves sensitivity might block the coverage along with the reliability of the mobile links. In this research work, the improvement in the quality of experience faced by the user for multimedia-related applications over the millimeter-wave band is investigated. The high attenuation loss in high frequencies is compensated with a massive array structure named Multiple Input and Multiple Output(MIMO)which is utilized in a hyperdense environment called heterogeneous networks(HetNet). The optimization problem which arises while maximizing the Mean Opinion Score(MOS)is analyzed along with the QoE(Quality of Experience)metric by considering the Base Station(BS)powers in addition to the needed Quality of Service(QoS).Most of the approaches related to wireless network communication are not suitable for the millimeter-wave band because of its problems due to high complexity and its dynamic nature.Hence a deep reinforcement learning framework is developed for tackling the same opti-mization problem. In this work,a Fuzzy-based Deep Convolutional Neural Net-work(FDCNN)is proposed in addition to a Deep Reinforcing Learning Framework(DRLF)for extracting the features of highly correlated data. The investigational results prove that the proposed method yields the highest satisfac-tion to the user by increasing the number of antennas in addition with the small-scale antennas at the base stations. The proposed work outperforms in terms of MOS with multiple antennas. 展开更多

The novel coronavirus 2019(COVID-19)rapidly spreading around the world and turns into a pandemic situation, consequently, detecting the coronavirus(COVID-19)affected patients are now the most critical task for medical specialists. The deficiency of medical testing kits leading to huge complexity in detecting COVID-19 patients worldwide, resulting in the number of infected cases is expanding. Therefore,a significant study is necessary about detecting COVID-19 patients using an automated diagnosis method, which hinders the spreading of coronavirus. In this paper, the study suggests a Deep Convolutional Neural Network-based multi-classification framework(COV-MCNet)using eight different pre-trained architectures such as VGG16,VGG19,ResNet50V2,DenseNet201,InceptionV3,MobileNet,InceptionResNetV2,Xception which are trained and tested on the X-ray images of COVID-19,Normal,Viral Pneumonia, and Bacterial Pneumonia. The results from 4-class(Normal vs.COVID-19 vs.Viral Pneumonia vs.Bacterial Pneumonia)demonstrated that the pre-trained model DenseNet201 provides the highest classification performance(accuracy:92.54%,precision:93.05%,recall:92.81%,F1-score:92.83%,specificity:97.47%).Notably,the DenseNet201(4-class classification)pre-trained model in the proposed COV-MCNet framework showed higher accuracy compared to the rest seven models.Important to mention that the proposed COV-MCNet model showed comparatively higher classification accuracy based on the small number of pre-processed datasets that specifies the designed system can produce superior results when more data become available. The proposed multi-classification network(COV-MCNet)significantly speeds up the existing radiology based method which will be helpful for the medical community and clinical specialists to early diagnosis the COVID-19 cases during this pandemic. 展开更多

The development of precision agriculture demands high accuracy and efficiency of cultivated land information extraction. As a new means of monitoring the ground in recent years, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) low-height remote sensing technique, which is flexible, efficient with low cost and with high resolution, is widely applied to investing various resources. Based on this, a novel extraction method for cultivated land information based on Deep Convolutional Neural Network and Transfer Learning (DTCLE) was proposed. First, linear features (roads and ridges etc.) were excluded based on Deep Convolutional Neural Network (DCNN). Next, feature extraction method learned from DCNN was used to cultivated land information extraction by introducing transfer learning mechanism. Last, cultivated land information extraction results were completed by the DTCLE and eCognifion for cultivated land information extraction (ECLE). The location of the Pengzhou County and Guanghan County, Sichuan Province were selected for the experimental purpose. The experimental results showed that the overall precision for the experimental image 1, 2 and 3 (of extracting cultivated land) with the DTCLE method was 91.7%, 88.1% and 88.2% respectively, and the overall precision of ECLE is 9o.7%, 90.5% and 87.0%, respectively. Accuracy of DTCLE was equivalent to that of ECLE, and also outperformed ECLE in terms of integrity and continuity. 展开更多

Image retrieval for food ingredients is important work, tremendously tiring, uninteresting, and expensive.Computer vision systems have extraordinary advancements in image retrieval with CNNs skills. But it is not feasible for small-size food datasets using convolutional neural networks directly. In this study,a novel image retrieval approach is presented for small and medium-scale food datasets, which both augments images utilizing image transformation techniques to enlarge the size of datasets, and promotes the average accuracy of food recognition with state-of-the-art deep learning technologies.First, typical image transformation techniques are used to augment food images. Then transfer learning technology based on deep learning is applied to extract image features. Finally,a food recognition algorithm is leveraged on extracted deepfeature vectors. The presented image-retrieval architecture is analyzed based on a smallscale food dataset which is composed of forty-one categories of food ingredients and one hundred pictures for each category.Extensive experimental results demonstrate the advantages of image-augmentation architecture for small and medium datasets using deep learning. The novel approach combines image augmentation,ResNet feature vectors, and SMO classification, and shows its superiority for food detection of small/medium-scale datasets with comprehensive experiments. 展开更多

Compressive strength of concrete is a significant factor to assess building structure health and safety. Therefore, various methods have been developed to evaluate the compressive strength of concrete structures. However, previous methods have several challenges in costly,time-consuming,and unsafety. To address these drawbacks, this paper proposed a digital vision based concrete compressive strength evaluating model using deep convolutional neural network(DCNN).The proposed model presented an alternative approach to evaluating the concrete strength and contributed to improving efficiency and accuracy. The model was developed with 4,000 digital images and 61,996 images extracted from video recordings collected from concrete samples. The experimental results indicated a root mean square error(RMSE)value of 3.56(MPa),demonstrating a strong feasibility that the proposed model can be utilized to predict the concrete strength with digital images of their surfaces and advantages to overcome the previous limitations. This experiment contributed to provide the basis that could be extended to future research with image analysis technique and artificial neural network in the diagnosis of concrete building structures. 展开更多

Background Coronary artery calcification is a well-known marker of atherosclerotic plaque burden.High-resolution intravascular optical coherence tomography(OCT)imaging has shown the potential to characterize the details of coronary calcification in vivo.In routine clinical practice,it is a time-consuming and laborious task for clinicians to review the over 250 images in a single pullback.Besides, the imbalance label distribution within the entire pullbacks is another problem, which could lead to the failure of the classifier model.Given the success of deep learning methods with other imaging modalities,a thorough understanding of calcified plaque detection using Convolutional Neural Networks(CNNs)within pullbacks for future clinical decision was required. Methods All 33 IVOCT clinical pullbacks of 33 patients were taken from Affiliated Drum Tower Hospital,Nanjing University between December 2017 and December 2018.For ground-truth annotation, three trained experts determined the type of plaque that was present in a B-Scan.The experts assigned the labels'no calcified plaque','calcified plaque'for each OCT image. All experts were provided the all images for labeling. The final label was determined based on consensus between the experts, different opinions on the plaque type were resolved by asking the experts for a repetition of their evaluation. Before the implement of algorithm, all OCT images was resized to a resolution of 300×300,which matched the range used with standard architectures in the natural image domain. In the study,we randomly selected 26 pullbacks for training, the remaining data were testing. While, imbalance label distribution within entire pullbacks was great challenge for various CNNs architecture. In order to resolve the problem,we designed the following experiment.First,we fine-tuned twenty different CNNs architecture, including customize CNN architectures and pretrained CNN architectures.Considering the nature of OCT images, customize CNN architectures were designed that the layers were fewer than 25 layers. Then, three with good performance were selected and further deep fine-tuned to train three different models. The difference of CNNs was mainly in the model architecture, such as depth-based residual networks,width-based inception networks. Finally, the three CNN models were used to majority voting, the predicted labels were from the most voting.Areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve(ROC AUC)were used as the evaluation metric for the imbalance label distribution. Results The imbalance label distribution within pullbacks affected both convergence during the training phase and generalization of a CNN model.Different labels of OCT images could be classified with excellent performance by fine tuning parameters of CNN architectures.Overall,we find that our final result performed best with an accuracy of 90%of'calcified plaque'class, which the numbers were less than'no calcified plaque'class in one pullback. Conclusions The obtained results showed that the method is fast and effective to classify calcific plaques with imbalance label distribution in each pullback. The results suggest that the proposed method could be facilitating our understanding of coronary artery calcification in the process of atherosclerosis andhelping guide complex interventional strategies in coronary arteries with superficial calcification. 展开更多
