Community livelihood and its dependence on nature resources under pressure of conservation

Conflict between conservation and community livelihood is a significant issue in China.Based on Sustainable Livelihood Framework(SLA),this study systematically analyzed livelihoods assets of a community in a Yunnan snub-nosed monkey conservation area and found that the livelihood pentagon of the community was shaped by multiple but frail and unstable income sources,abundant natural resources with restricted use right,underutilized labors,inadequate financial resources,inconvenient physical capital and weak social capital.Villagers'income heavily depended on forest,and grazing and nontimber forest products(NTFP)collection are common and major income sources for villagers.However,differentiation of income dependence on forest among villagers'groups showed that there is no close correlation between the level of income and the level of income dependence on forest.Households'daily life also heavily depended on the forest due to heating and pig-feed cooking;hence,fuelwood cannot be easily replaced by any other energy resource for a long period.

Catastrophe Theory Models for Stress-dependent Behaviour in a NiTi Shape Memory Alloy

The measurements by Huibin XU et al of the stress-dependence ot hysteresis in a NiTi shape memo ry alloy are modeled by catastrophe theory. The cusp catastrophe is used with the strain as the behaviour variable and the control parameters being functions of the stress and the temperature. A two constant model is found to be preferred to a four constant model.

TEMPERATURE—DEPENDENCE OF CARRIER ION NUMBER IN SOLID POLYETHER MEDIA

The temperature—dependence of cationic conductivity,mobility andcarrier generation in the blend of macromolecular lithium salt and copoly-ether were investigated.The population of free—ions was found to decreaseexponentially with rising temperature.However,this“anomalous”behavior ofsalt—dissociation has little effect on the temperature—dependence of con-ductivity,since it is ion mobility rather than carrier ion number whichpredominates ion transport process.

In a recently published Nature article,Lee et al.investigated distinct metabolic dependencies of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma(PDA)cells compared to normal tissue,and discovered that PDA cells exhibited a unique reliance on de novo ornithine synthesis from glutamine,rather than arginine.This aberrant polyamine synthesis offers a promising therapeutic target for pancreatic cancer.

We used 5 types maleimide spin labeling compounds in studying the property of sulfhydryl binding sites on normal cells V79 and cancer cells V79-B1 membrane of the lungs of Chinese hamster. The binding sites of sulfhydryl group on the membrane proteins of both normal cell V79 and cancer cell V79-B1 are of conical shape. But, the binding sites of sulfhydryl group on the membrane of V79 cell are narrower and deeper than those of V79-B1 cell. The depth of the former is about 10.85—15.33 while the depth of the latter is less than 10.85.
