The purpose was to determine the daily pattern of use and overall likeability of sit-stand desk over the course of a semester. Participants: A total of 18 subjects (12 standing) completed the 11-week study (week 5-15 of the semester) from January-April, 2016. Methods: Each student in the standing group was given a sit-stand desk to use as they desired. Results: Individual daily standing time ranged from 0-100% of daily attendance time and the daily group average ranged from 2.1-38.4%. Two-thirds of the standing bouts were ≤ 2 min. Perception questionnaire answers were positive for using the desk and their effect on students’ ability to work in class. Conclusions: The results indicate the sit-stand desks were utilized at low levels and for short durations for most participants, but perceptions of desk use remained positive.展开更多

Non-phar...Existed evidences show that airborne transmission of human respiratory droplets may be related with the spread of some infectious disease, such as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and H1N1 pandemic. Non-pharmaceutical approaches, including ventilation system and personal protection, are believed to have certain positive effects on the reduction of co-occupant's inhalation. This work then aims to numerically study the performances of mouth covering on co-occupant's exposure under mixing ventilation (MV), under-floor air distribution (UFAD) and displacement ventilation (DV) system, using drift-flux model. Desk partition, as one generally employed arrangement in plan office, is also investigated under MV. The dispersion of 1, 5 and 10 grn droplet residuals are numerically calculated and CO2 is used to represent tracer gas. The results show that using mouth covering by the infected person can reduce the co-occupant's inhalation greatly by interrupting direct spread of the expelled droplets, and best performance can be achieved under DV since the coughed air is mainly confined in the microenvironment of the infected person. The researches under MV show that the two interventions, mouth covering and desk partition, achieve almost the sarae inhalation for fine droplets while the inhalation of the co-occupant is lower when using mouth covering for large droplets.展开更多

However, it is unclear as to the metabolic impact of standing desks in normal weight versu...Background: The use of standing desks has been associated with greater metabolic cost as compared to traditional seated desks. However, it is unclear as to the metabolic impact of standing desks in normal weight versus obese men and women. Methods: We compared the metabolic cost of using a standing and seated desk in 14 obese and 19 normal weight men and women. Subjects reported to the lab on a single occasion and participated in two, 30-minute sessions of standing and seated desk work (i.e., typing), in random order. Expired gases were collected during the 2-hour period and calorie expenditure was estimated using indirect calorimetry. Results: We noted a significant (p = 0.013) increase in energy expenditure of 7.4 kcal•30 minutes−1 (+14.7%) during standing as compared to seated for the obese group. No significant difference in energy expenditure was noted for the normal weight group (p = 0.674). A condition effect was noted for heart rate and diastolic blood pressure, with standing being significantly higher than seated for both variables (p 0.05). Conclusion: The use of a standing desk modestly increases energy expenditure in obese subjects but does not have the same effect in those of normal weight. It is unknown whether the increased energy expenditure would be maintained over time in the obese subjects/individuals, as they may adapt to the standing position. Moreover, if normal weight individuals choose a standing desk, they should do so for reasons unrelated to increased energy expenditure (e.g., improved spine health, greater feeling of productivity).展开更多

No services, delayed services, inadequate services and poor or delayed information flow all hinder or prevent the normal course of business. The health of the service-oriented approach, the communication flow and the services themselves directly equate to the health and vitality of the enterprise. By health we mean, availability, performance, integrity, and reliability of web services. This paper proposes and details an agent based approach for web service monitoring in an enterprise environment. The objective of this approach is to provide enhanced security, improved help desk information and attribution across a diverse web services landscape that is logically a system but physically distributed. The definition of the agents, their logical locations, their functionality and relationships has not been described previously. This architecture provides many advantages over previous methodologies for event monitoring including assignment of overlapping responsibilities, reduction in help desk effort and placement of measurements throughout the upper layers of the web services system. This is also the first enumeration of significant events and information requirements at the service level. It also assigns responsibility to the components (agents, handlers or the service itself) for logging and alerting such events. This architecture is currently being implemented by a major defense entity.展开更多

According to man-machine engineering, the design can meet the needs of different adult populations for computer display height and angle requirements. The incidences of nosocomial infections(NIs)are increasing throughout the world,especially for those airborne diseases caused by pathogens or air particulates that float in air.In this study,we designed and manufactur...The incidences of nosocomial infections(NIs)are increasing throughout the world,especially for those airborne diseases caused by pathogens or air particulates that float in air.In this study,we designed and manufactured a desk for clinic consultation room air purification and air isolation between doctor and patient.The air isolation and purification(AIP)desk has a high efficiency particulate air(HEPA)filter on the tope and several primary efficiency filters on the sides for air purification.The air circulating between inlet and outlet forms a wind-curtain between doctor and patient.The Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD)model was used to calculate the speed of the air flow and the angle of sampler.We tested the air purification function of the AIP desk in rooms sized about 3.6×2.8×2.8 m(L×W×H)and found that the AIP desk could significantly remove the tested air pollutants like smoke particulates and microorganisms like Staphylococcus albus(S.albus)and human adenovirus type 5(HAdV-5).The wind-curtain can significantly block the exhale air of patient being transmitted to the respiratory area of doctor setting in the opposite of AIP desk.Thus,the AIP desk can be used in hospital setting to reduce the risk of NIs and protect both doctors and patients.展开更多
