Current research on pump-turbine units is focused on the unstable operation at off-design conditions, with the characteristic curves in generating mode being S-shaped. Unlike in the traditional water turbines, pump-turbine operation along the S-shaped curve can lead to difficulties during load rejection with unusual increases in the water pressure, which leads to machine vibrations. This paper describes both model tests and numerical simulations. A reduced scale model of a low specific speed pump-turbine was used for the performance tests, with comparisons to computational fluid dynamics(CFD) results. Predictions using the detached eddy simulation(DES) turbulence model, which is a combined Reynolds averaged Naviers-Stokes(RANS) and large eddy simulation(LES) model, are compared with the two-equation turbulence mode results. The external characteristics as well as the internal flow are for various guide vane openings to understand the unsteady flow along the so called S characteristics of a pump-turbine. Comparison of the experimental data with the CFD results for various conditions and times shows that DES model gives better agreement with experimental data than the two-equation turbulence model. For low flow conditions, the centrifugal forces and the large incident angle create large vortices between the guide vanes and the runner inlet in the runner passage, which is the main factor leading to the S-shaped characteristics. The turbulence model used here gives more accurate simulations of the internal flow characteristics of the pump-turbine and a more detailed force analysis which shows the mechanisms controlling of the S characteristics. 展开更多

The Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS),such as the original k-ω two-equation closures, have been very popular in providing good prediction for a wide variety of flows with presently available computational resource. But for cavitating flows, the above equations noticeably over-predict turbulent production and hence effective viscosity. In this paper, the detached eddy simulation(DES) method for time-dependent turbulent cavitating flows is investigated. To assess the state-of-the-art of computational capabilities, different turbulence models including the widely used RANS model and DES model are conducted.Firstly,in order to investigate the grid dependency in computations, different grid sizes are adopted in the computation.Furthermore, the credibility of DES model is supported by the unsteady cavitating flows over a 2D hydrofoil. The results show that the DES model can effectively reduce the eddy viscosities. From the experimental validations regarding the force analysis, frequency and the unsteady cavity visualizations, more favorable agreement with experimental visualizations and measurements are obtained by DES model.DES model is better able to capture unsteady phenomena including cavity length and the resulting hydrodynamic characteristics, reproduces the time-averaged velocity quantitatively around the hydrofoil, and yields more acceptable and unsteady dynamics features. The DES model has shown to be effective in improving the overall predictive capability of unsteady cavitating flows. 展开更多

In order to describe an investigation of the flow around high-speed train on a bridge under cross winds using detached-eddy simulation(DES), a 1/8th scale model of a three-car high-speed train and a typical bridge model are employed, Numerical wind tunnel technology based on computational fluid dynamics(CFD) is used, and the CFD models are set as stationary models. The Reynolds number of the flow, based on the inflow velocity and the height of the vehicle, is 1.9×10~6. The computations are conducted under three cases, train on the windward track on the bridge(WWC), train on the leeward track on the bridge(LWC) and train on the flat ground(FGC). Commercial software FLUENT is used and the mesh sensitivity research is carried out by three different grids: coarse, medium and fine. Results show that compared with FGC case, the side force coefficients of the head cars for the WWC and LWC cases increases by 14% and 29%, respectively; the coefficients of middle cars for the WWC and LWC increase by 32% and 10%, respectively; and that of the tail car increases by 45% for the WWC whereas decreases by 2% for the LWC case. The most notable thing is that the side force and the rolling moment of the head car are greater for the LWC, while the side force and the rolling moment of the middle car and the tail car are greater for the WWC. Comparing the velocity profiles at different locations, the flow is significantly influenced by the bridge-train system when the air is close to it. For the three cases(WWC, LWC and FGC), the pressure on the windward side of train is mostly positive while that of the leeward side is negative. The discrepancy of train's aerodynamic force is due to the different surface area of positive pressure and negative pressure zone. Many vortices are born on the leeward edge of the roofs. Theses vortices develop downstream, detach and dissipate into the wake region. The eddies develop irregularly, leading to a noticeably turbulent flow at leeward side of train. 展开更多

One of the objectives of car manufacturers is to improve engine performance, reduce consumption reduce emissions. To achieve this objective, it is important to understand the phenomena involved in the combustion chambers of engines. These phenomena are numerous and complex in nature such: the aerodynamics, fuel-air mixture, turbulence, combustion and the cycle to cycle instabilities that cause more problems. One of the factors responsible for the phenomenon of cycle to cycle variations is the instability of the characteristics of the vortex flow Tumble. This instability may be due to changes in initial conditions. This study is achieved in order to contribute in a better understanding of engine flow by using a Detached Eddy Simulation Shear-Stress Transport (DES SST) model, which is a hybrid RANS/LES model. These simulations have been performed with the commercial CFD (computational fluid dynamic) code (FLUENT) coupled with our own development based on UDF facilities given by FLUENT. To explore the suitability of the 3D DES STT to simulate the internal flow, the calculation is performed for a model tumbling flow at constant volume. This flow has been measured in an experimental set up and measurements are used to initiate and to validate simulations. For this case study, we consider simplified engine geometry. To generate tumbling motion, we use non-reacting DES with a single cycle (SC) strategy. Also, with this strategy we study the effect of initial conditions on the instabilities that accompany a vortex type tumble. 展开更多

The improved delayed detached eddy simulation method with shear stress transport model was used to analyze the evolution of vortex structure, velocity and pressure fields of swirling jet.The influence of nozzle pressure drop on vortex structure development and turbulence pulsation was investigated. The development of vortex structure could be divided into three stages:Kelvin-Helmholtz(K-H)instability,transition stage and swirling flow instability.Swirling flow could significantly enhance radial turbulence pulsation and increase diffusion angle. At the downstream of the jet flow, turbulence pulsation dissipation was the main reason for jet velocity attenuation. With the increase of pressure drop, the jet velocity, pulsation amplitude and the symmetry of velocity distribution increased correspondingly.Meanwhile the pressure pulsation along with the axis and vortex transport intensity also increased significantly. When the jet distance exceeded about 9 times the dimensionless jet distance, the impact distance of swirling jet could not be improved effectively by increasing the pressure drop. However,it could effectively increase the swirl intensity and jet diffusion angle. The swirling jet is more suitable for radial horizontal drilling with large hole size, coalbed methane horizontal well cavity completion and roadway drilling and pressure relief, etc. 展开更多

Detailed formulation of the detached-eddy simulation (DES) based on shear stress transport model (SST) was deduced. Based on finite volume method, detached-eddy simulation of super- sonic turbulent flow over rearward facing step was conducted. Multi-block structured non-conform grid was designed. The obtained distribution of wall pressure coefficient along the downstream of the step was in good agreement with experiment. The structure of supersonic flow over rearward facing step is complicated and contains boundary layer-shock interaction, shock-shock interaction and sec- ondary flow separation. The predictions of the corner pressure and location of the reattachment shock are more exact than the Reynolds-averaged method. Results show that detached-eddy simulation can simulate the supersonic separated flows exactly and has advantages over Reynolds-averaged method. The partition of the detached-eddy simulation can be easily achieved by using multi-block non-conform grid, which reduces the requirement of the computational resources as well. 展开更多

A detached eddy simulation(DES) and a k-ε-based Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes(RANS) calculation on the co-current spray drying chamber is presented. The DES used here is based on the Spalart–Allmaras(SA) turbulence model, whereas the standard k-ε(SKE) was considered here for comparison purposes. Predictions of the mean axial velocity, temperature and humidity profile have been evaluated and compared with experimental measurements. The effects of the turbulence model on the predictions of the mean axial velocity, temperature and the humidity profile are most noticeable in the(highly anisotropic) spraying region. The findings suggest that DES provide a more accurate prediction(with error less than 5%) of the flow field in a spray drying chamber compared with RANS-based k-ε models. The DES simulation also confirmed the presence of anisotropic turbulent flow in the spray dryer from the analysis of the velocity component fluctuations and turbulent structure as illustrated by the Q-criterion. 展开更多

The variations of the frontogenetic trend of a cold filament induced by the cross-filament wind and wave fields are studied by a non-hydrostatic large eddy simulation. Five cases with different strengths of wind and wave fields are studied. The results show that the intense wind and wave fields further break the symmetries of submesoscale flow fields and suppress the levels of filament frontogenesis. The changes of secondary circulation directions—that is, the conversion between the convergence and divergence of the surface cross-filament currents with the downwelling and upwelling jets in the filament center—are associated with the inertial oscillation. The filament frontogenesis and frontolysis caused by the changes of secondary circulation directions may periodically sharpen and smooth the gradient of submesoscale flow fields. The lifecycle of the cold filament may include multiple stages of filament frontogenesis and frontolysis. 展开更多

The frontogenetic processes of a submesoscale cold filament driven by the thermal convection turbulence are studied by a non-hydrostatic large eddy simulation. The results show that the periodic changes in the direction of the cross-filament secondary circulations are induced by the inertial oscillation. The change in the direction of the secondary circulations induces the enhancement and reduction of the horizontal temperature gradient during the former and later inertial period, which indicates that the frontogenetical processes of the cold filament include both of frontogenesis and frontolysis. The structure of the cold filament may be broken and restored by frontogenesis and frontolysis, respectively. The magnitude of the down-filament currents has a periodic variation, while its direction is unchanged with time. The coupling effect of the turbulent mixing and the frontogenesis and frontolysis gradually weakens the temperature gradient of the cold filament with time, which reduces frontogenetical intensity and enlarges the width of cold filament. 展开更多

In a convective scheme featuring a discretized cloud size density, the assumed lateral mixing rate is inversely proportional to the exponential coefficient of plume size. This follows a typical assumption of-1, but it has unveiled inherent uncertainties, especially for deep layer clouds. Addressing this knowledge gap, we conducted comprehensive large eddy simulations and comparative analyses focused on terrestrial regions. Our investigation revealed that cloud formation adheres to the tenets of Bernoulli trials, illustrating power-law scaling that remains consistent regardless of the inherent deep layer cloud attributes existing between cloud size and the number of clouds. This scaling paradigm encompasses liquid, ice, and mixed phases in deep layer clouds. The exponent characterizing the interplay between cloud scale and number in the deep layer cloud, specifically for liquid, ice, or mixed-phase clouds, resembles that of shallow convection, but converges closely to zero. This convergence signifies a propensity for diminished cloud numbers and sizes within deep layer clouds. Notably, the infusion of abundant moisture and the release of latent heat by condensation within the lower atmospheric strata make substantial contributions. However, this role in ice phase formation is limited. The emergence of liquid and ice phases in deep layer clouds is facilitated by the latent heat and influenced by the wind shear inherent in the middle levels. These interrelationships hold potential applications in formulating parameterizations and post-processing model outcomes. 展开更多

Coagulation and growth of nanoparticles subject to large coherent structures in a planar jet has been explored by using large eddy simulation. The particle field is obtained by employing a moment method to approximate the nanoparticle general dynamic equa- tion. An incompressible fluid containing particles of 1 nm in diameter is projected into a particle-free ambient. The results show that the coherent structures dominate the evolution of the nanoparticle number intensity, diameter and polydispersity distributions as the jet develops. In addition, the coherent structures act to increase the diffusion of particles, and the vortex rolling-up makes the particles distributing more irregularly while the vortex pairing causes particle distributions to become uniform. As the jet travels downstream, the time-averaged particle number concentration becomes lower in the jet core and higher in the outskirts, whereas the time- averaged particle mass over the entire flow field maintains unaltered, and the time-averaged particle diameter and geometric standard deviations grow and reach their maximum on the interface of the jet region and the ambient. 展开更多

An improved large eddy simulation using a dynamic second-order sub-grid-scale (SGS) stress model has been developed to model the governing equations of dense turbulent particle-liquid two-phase flows in a rotating coordinate system, and continuity is conserved by a mass-weighted method to solve the filtered governing equations. In the cur- rent second-order SGS model, the SGS stress is a function of both the resolved strain-rate and rotation-rate tensors, and the model parameters are obtained from the dimensional consistency and the invariants of the strain-rate and the rotation-rate tensors. In the numerical calculation, the finite volume method is used to discretize the governing equations with a staggered grid system. The SIMPLEC algorithm is applied for the solution of the discretized governing equations. Body- fitted coordinates are used to simulate the two-phase flows in complex geometries. Finally the second-order dynamic SGS model is successfully applied to simulate the dense turbu-lent particle-liquid two-phase flows in a centrifugal impeller. The predicted pressure and velocity distributions are in good agreement with experimental results. 展开更多

A self-adaptive-grid method is applied to numerical simulation of the evolu- tion of aircraft wake vortex with the large eddy simulation (LES). The Idaho Falls (IDF) measurement of run 9 case is simulated numerically and compared with that of the field experimental data. The comparison shows that the method is reliable in the complex atmospheric environment with crosswind and ground effect. In addition, six cases with different ambient atmospheric turbulences and Brunt V^iis/il^i (BV) frequencies are com- puted with the LES. The main characteristics of vortex are appropriately simulated by the current method. The onset time of rapid decay and the descending of vortices are in agreement with the previous measurements and the numerical prediction. Also, sec-ondary structures such as baroclinic vorticity and helical structures are also simulated. Only approximately 6 million grid points are needed in computation with the present method, while the number can be as large as 34 million when using a uniform mesh with the same core resolution. The self-adaptive-grid method is proved to be practical in the numerical research of aircraft wake vortex. 展开更多

A large eddy simulation (LES) of the flows around an underwater vehicle model at intermediate Reynolds numbers is performed. The underwater vehicle model is taken as the DARPA SUBOFF with full appendages, where the Reynolds number based on the hull length is 1.0x 105, An immersed boundary method based on the moving-least-squares reconstruction is used to handle the complex geometric boundaries. The adaptive mesh refinement is utilized to resolve the flows near the hull, The parallel scalabilities of the flow solver are tested on meshes with the number of cells varying from 50 million to 3.2 billion, The parallel solver reaches nearly linear scalability for the flows around the underwater vehicle model, The present simulation captures the essential features of the vortex structures near the hull and in the wake, Both of the time-averaged pressure coefficients and srreamwise velocity profiles obtained from the LES are consistent with the characteristics of the flows pass an appended axisymmetric body. The code efficiency and its correct predictions on flow features allow us to perform the full-scale simulations on tens of thousands of cores with billions of grid points for higher-Reynolds-number flows around the underwater vehicles. 展开更多

Large eddy simulations (LES) of mixing process in a stirred tank of 0.476m diameter with a 3-narrow blade hydrofoil CBY impeller were reported. The turbulent flow field and mixing time were calculated using LES with Sma-gorinsky-Lilly subgrid scale model. The impeller rotation was modeled using the sliding mesh technique. Better agree-ment of power demand and mixing time was obtained between the experimental and the LES prediction than that by the traditional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) approach. The curve of tracer response predicted by LES was in good agreement with the experimental. Based on a pseudo-spectral large eddy simulation (LES) model, an LES model with an anisotropy turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) closure model and an explicit multi-stage third-order Runge-Kutta scheme is established. The modeling and analysis show that the LES model can simulate the planetary boundary layer (PBL) with a uniform underlying surface under various stratifications very well. Then, similar to the description of a forest canopy, the drag term on momentum and the production term of TKE by subgrid city buildings are introduced into the LES equations to account for the area-averaged effect of the subgrid urban canopy elements and to simulate the meteorological fields of the urban boundary layer (UBL). Numerical experiments and comparison analysis show that: (1) the result from the LES of the UBL with a proposed formula for the drag coefficient is consistent and comparable with that from wind tunnel experiments and an urban subdomain scale model; (2) due to the effect of urban buildings, the wind velocity near the canopy is decreased, turbulence is intensified, TKE, variance, and momentum flux are increased, the momentum and heat flux at the top of the PBL are increased, and the development of the PBL is quickened; (3) the height of the roughness sublayer (RS) of the actual city buildings is the maximum building height (1.5-3 times the mean building height), and a constant flux layer (CFL) exists in the lower part of the UBL. 展开更多

In this study, the large eddy simulation technique was applied on the flow in a baffled stirred tank driven by a Rushton turbine at Re=29000. The interaction between the rotating impeller and the static baffles was accounted for by means of the improved inner-outer iterative algorithm. The sub-grid scale model was a conventional Smagorinsky model. The numerical solution of the governing equations was conducted in a cylindrical staggered grid. The momentum and the continuity equations were discretized using the finite difference method, with a third-order QUICK scheme used for convective terms. The phase-resolved predictions were compared with the experimental data of Wu and Patterson and good agreement was observed for both the mean and the turbulence quantities. They were much better than the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes model including the Reynolds Stress Model for simulating the turbulence. The study also suggests the feasibility of LES in combination with the improved inner-outer iterative algorithm for the simulation of turbulent flow in stirred tanks. 展开更多

A three dimensional numerical model in the σ coordinate system is developed to study the problem of waves. Turbulence effects are modeled by a subgrid scale (SGS) model with the concept of large eddy simulation (LES). The σ coordinate transformation is introduced to map the irregular physical domain of the wavy free surface and uneven bottom onto the regular computational domain of the shape of rectangular prism. The operator splitting method, which splits the solution procedure into the advection, diffusion, and propagation steps, is used to solve the modified Navier Stokes Equation. The model is used to simulate the propagation of solitary wave and wave passing over a submerged breakwater. Numerical results are compared with available analytical solutions and experimental data in terms of velocity profiles, free surface displacement, and energy conservation. Good agreement is obtained. The method is proved to be of high accuracy and efficiency in simulating surface wave propagation and wave structure interaction. It is suitable for the large and irregular physical domain, and requiring the non uniform grid system. The present work provides a foundation for further studies of random waves, wave structure interaction, wave discharge interaction, etc. 展开更多
