This article explores the dynamics of the Diaspora's dual loyalties towards their home countries and host countries by using American Jewry as a case study. It argues that in liberal-democratic states, the shift in the Diaspora's loyalty towards the homeland vis-à-vis the host land is a result of the change to the host land's perception of where the acceptable boundary of the Diaspora's practice of dual loyalties is, or in other words, to what extent the Diaspora's support of the homeland is perceived to be acceptable by their host land. The reconstruction of this boundary is determined by four factors: the degree of political coordination between home states and host states, the attempt of the home state to mobilize its diasporas, the means advocated and supported by the Diaspora, and the severity of potential consequences due to the Diaspora's action. 展开更多

The cult of Mazu is a common folk belief in China and Vietnam.Originating from the Song and Yuan Dynasties, particularly during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the cult of Mazu spread to Vietnam through maritime trade and migration from coastal regions of China. After centuries of integration and development,it evolved into its own cultural system of Mazu worship, becoming an important component of Vietnamese folk culture.Hainan,China,as a crucial supply station on the Maritime Silk Road, has close connections with the transmission of Mazu culture to Vietnam. This paper adopts field investigations and literature research methods to explore the Mazu worship and culture in Hainan,China, and the Qiongfu Assembly Halls in Vietnam. 展开更多

The Black American Church: A Reactionary and Ideological Apparatus of Slavery

This work argues that Denmark Vesey,Nat Turner,Gabriel Prosser,David Walker,Henry Highland Garnet, amongst a few others were the reactionary(dialectical)exceptions to the black church, not the norm,an(ideological)institution established to interpellate and indoctrinate blacks to accept their conditions in slavery. In other words, the aforementioned were the enslaved who used Christian dogma to(negative dialectically)respond to the barbarity of slavery by violently convicting white Christian society for not living up to its values, ideas, and ideals given the treatment of African people by so-called Christians. In the latter sense it was reactionary;in the former,it was an ideological apparatus of domination and control for the institution of slavery. The contemporary attempt to racially vindicate the black church as a sui generis revolutionary institution overflowing with Africanisms is ahistorical and ideological reaped in pseudoscientific propositions stemming from postmodern and post-structural theories. 展开更多

Purpose:Diaspora researchers work in one country but have ancestral origins in another, either through moves during a research career(mobile diaspora researchers)or by starting research in the target country(embedded diaspora researchers).Whilst mobile researchers might be tracked through affiliation changes in bibliometric databases, embedded researchers cannot. This article reports an evidence-based discussion of which countries’diaspora researchers can be partially tracked using first or last names, addressing this limitation.Design/methodology/approach:A frequency analysis of first and last names of authors of all Scopus journal articles 2001-2021 for 200 countries or regions.Findings:There are great variations in the extent to which first or last names are uniquely national, from Monserrat(no unique first names)to Thailand(81%unique last names).Nevertheless, most countries have a subset of first or last names that are relatively unique. For the 50 countries with the most researchers, authors with relatively national names are always more likely to research their name-associated country, suggesting a continued national association.Lists of researchers’first and last name frequencies and proportions are provided for 200 countries/regions.Research limitations:Only one period is tracked(2001-2021)and no attempt was made to validate the ancestral origins of any researcher.Practical implications:Simple name heuristics can be used to identify the international spread of a sample of most countries’diaspora researchers, but some manual checks of individual names are needed to weed out false matches. This can supplement mobile researcher data from bibliometric databases.Originality/value:This is the first attempt to list name associations for the authors of all countries and large regions, and to identify the countries for which diaspora researchers could be tracked by name. 展开更多

Purpose:Nearly 122 scientific journals are currently being published in Armenia-of which only six are indexed by WoS and/or Scopus databases. The majority of the national journals are published in the Armenian language, solely possessing abstracts written in English, although there are also English-language and multi-language journals with articles not only in Armenian but also in other foreign languages. The aim of this article is to study the visibility of the(non-indexed)national Armenian journals in the WoS database through citation analysis. In consideration of the existence of a relevant Armenian“diaspora”in the world, this article also attempts to estimate its impact in terms of citation statistics.Design/methodology/approach:For this end,we have identified citations to the national/domestic Armenian journals in the WoS database in comparison with the share of citations received from“diaspora”researchers(researchers of Armenian origin born in foreign countries and those originally from Armenia who have emigrated to foreign countries).Findings:Among the 116 Armenian domestic journals analyzed(not indexed by WoS),only 47 were found to be cited in WoS.Of these journals, almost 12%are citations by“diaspora”researchers, most of which concern Social Science and Humanities journals.Research limitations:Although the surnames of Armenians end with-i(y)an,sometimes,the Diaspora Armenians, surnames are changed or modified or they are not ending with-i(y)an,in this case we may fail to identify them.Practical implications:This study can help to build new, more deep and comprehensive relations with scientific diasporas.Originality/value:This study offers a new understanding of multifaced research collaboration with scientific diasporas and their role in internationalization of domestic journals. 展开更多

This work, using the case study of the Haitian Revolution, positions Paul C.Mocombe’s theory of antidialectic within Hegel’s dialectical reasoning.Mocombe posits that the antidialectical position in Hegel’s dialectic is the position of each self-consciousness when they initially encounter each other at the onset of the master/slave dialectic.Whereas, the master seeks to move to the dialectical position in order to dominate and eliminate the original(antidialectical)position of the slave, the slave remains in this antidialectical position so long as they seek to fight against their enslavement for the purpose of maintaining and reproducing their original, antidialectical, position, which is social, political, economic, and ideological. In any other instances, they(the slaves)are either in the dialectical, seeking to maintain the status quo,or negative dialectical, seeking to integrate the status quo on equal footing with the master, positions. 展开更多

This work posits that the Haitian Revolution became an insignificant Revolution the minute that it was usurped by the Affranchis class, the mulatto elites and petit-bourgeois creole blacks, seeking equality of opportunity, recognition, and distribution with their former colonial masters, from the Africans who commenced the event on the night of August 14th,1791.Whereas the Africans,I conclude, sought total freedom from the mercantilist and liberal order of the whites, which made the Haitian Revolution significant, the vindicationism sought by the Affranchis class undermined the agential initiatives of the Africans rendering the Revolution revolutionarily insignificant. 展开更多

This paper focuses on media consumption, especially Chinese-language media consumption, among Chinese people living in the UK within the current global media landscape. This research project employs an explanatory sequential mixed-methods approach, utilizing a questionnaire survey, focus groups, and semi-structured in-depth interviews to gather both quantitative and qualitative data. The findings indicate that Chinese people in the UK predominantly consume media through social platforms on mobile devices.Notably, their approach to accessing news reflects a trend of independent choice driven by personal information preferences. This study suggests that shifts in the media consumption of Chinese individuals in the UK are influenced by changing media environments in China, and their media habits evolve as they gradually adapt to the host society. While Chinese-language media offer platforms for Chinese individuals in the UK to create virtual communities to meet various needs, this research argues that while it may help them adapt to the host society more quickly,it does not necessarily encourage full integration. 展开更多

This paper investigates empirically the link between the inflow of Diasporas remittances and the environment of accounting/auditing in 10 African countries. The result using Spearman's rank correlation indicates the existence of a positive relationship (correlation coefficient rs is 0.36), but the strength of the relationship is weak (significant level of 0.05). The quality of accounting and auditing as represented by their environment is a stimulus that could enhance the inflow of Diasporas remittances. The study therefore recommends that African countries should strategically and proactively refocus attention on developing accounting/auditing environment in order to attract reasonable volume of remittances. 展开更多

The 2014 Nobel Prize winner in literature,Patrick Modiano,in his masterpiece,In the Caféof Lost Youth, describes the story of Louki,a young mysterious lady who has been making time-travelling diaspora in all her life. This thesis makes deep analysis by making use of temporal relationship—the fragmentation of the past, the hopeless pursuit from the present to the future, and the confusion of time, revealing that the essence of life is the intertwining of reality and illusion, the confusion of pain and happiness, the ambiguity of survival and death.Furthermore,it also argues that, the story of the heroine Louki, who, like most other human beings,is living like“drifting duckweed and floating clouds”within the global circular diaspora with time as the center. 展开更多

This paper examines the life of Africans, using literature to discuss movements from Africa to other parts of the world as Diasporas.Such movements begin with slavery,to political asylum being sought and now self-initiated movements for trade, education, and labour for the facilitation of both information and industrial development.Relevant literatures are reviewed and analysed for their symbolic implications beyond the texts in order to establish the dialectic of facts and fiction. The relevant literatures include:Olaudah Equaino’s(1789)Equaino’s Travels,Joseph Conrad’s(1995)Heart of Darkness and Other Stories, and Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo’s(2008)Trafficked.This paper posits that prior to the 15th century,Africans were free in their natural milieu with either no threat to their lives or being alienated from their ancestral homes until the period of slavery.Sequel to the attainment of independence by most African countries with the hope for self-governance and development, corruption, civil wars, foreign debts, economic depression, famine, and poverty truncate the people’s hope for better living.African citizens therefore seek refuge abroad in countries with viable economy. With globalization, not only education and culture play significant roles, but also modern technology especially information and communication technology(ICT)play key roles in population drift in trade. There lies an absurdity that Africans now flee their once free homeland or countries to foreign lands which are perceived as“heaven on earth”because of their functional systems through effective governance. Thus, this paper concludes that new movements and new Africans in the Diaspora are self-initiated,imposed,and motivated irrespective of their being alienated from home and the risks involved since the end will justify the means. 展开更多

These writings as an image of adjustments in the host culture of their migrated place, as graphics of invert expectations, as words of subconscious memory and as signs of a flash of insight present social conditioning and pressures of migrants in alien lands, who traversed across cross-borders for some or the other reasons. Migration is mostly an economic, escape, expatriate, exile activity. It encourages cultural inflow and cultural outflow. Migration to abroad indeed brings good-feel factor, but there is emotional crisis of self and nationality. There is a discovery of one's "Self' as the center of human existence and for interdependence. Because of "Videsiya bhav", lots of narratives, memoirs, letters, and travelogues have been written to search roots of nativity, belongingness in their imagination. Besides manifestation, it is the catharsis of their wings/flight. With their spatial paradigms, the novelists go beyond the past. They perceive present by way of imaginary construction of memory, nostalgia, and myth in order to dispossess the past. To remove the sense of otherness, they eliminate western standardization and reorient their cultural tradition. The paper aims to interrogate the human displacement across borders and rupture in relationships. The study attempts to sensitize the migrants' memories and emotional loss and to understand mobility in terms of the social structure and cultural process. It examines Western psyche with Indian psyche in a context of the emotional history of migrants. The stories of emotional disposition, remembrance, missing, searching evoke resilient attitude towards one's own and towards the place they live. Emotion is a child like activity for Indian migrants as well as for those who are left behind in their homeland. 展开更多

The Colombian armed conflict has been represented in several films that have exposed the complexity of the problem In this scenario forced displacement is a recurring theme. Based on this reality began a process of investigation that took as a starting point the revision of 160 synopsis of national films and 10 foreigners that had thematic violence in Colombia. The intention was to determine in which films the victim was represented by displacement and in what way. The method was an exploratory-~tescriptive documentary review. For the analysis, the concepts of Collective Imagination, Social Depiction and Semi-lmaginary Reality were taken as corpus. As a general conclusion, it is exposed that the representation of the victim in the national cinema is determined by the topics of Violence and Displaced Person that have varied in parallel according to the Colombian historical conjuncture. These configurations show the subject as a body transformed by the struggle of political powers. 展开更多

India's great power dream has a long history and has borne the expectations of several generations of Indian political elites after its independence. Overseas Indians are highly valued by the Indian government due to their vast resources and special status as a bridge between their residence countries and India. After the end of the Cold War, the Indian government began to consider overseas Indians as an important factor of its human resources and satisfied several demands by establishing relevant institutions, formulating relevant policies, and revising relevant laws. In this manner, they achieved the objective of leveraging overseas Indians. This strategic adjustment is an important part of the new overall development strategy and external strategy, which can be described as key to India's development breakthrough and rapid emergence. However, the current Indian Diaspora is relatively negative for the following reasons: utilitarian Indian Diaspora strategy, the lack of a clear understanding of the home country or nationality, the rotation of Indian political parties, and the lack of sustainability of the Indian Diaspora strategy. 展开更多

Tradition has been defined as practices brought forward from the past into the present. In the context of enslavement and the cultural dislocation that accompanied it, memory became critical in the recreation of tradition. Individual memory contributed to the practices that created new traditions to be carried forward by subsequent generations. Archaeological evidence from Clifton Plantation, Bahamas, illustrates how memory and tradition shaped the identities of both enslaver and enslaved, and influenced the construction of an African Bahamian identity in the early nineteenth-century. In their consumer selections, the enslaved people of Clifton were constructing artifact assemblages that reflected their memories of their traditional cultural background. In the process they were creating an Afro-Bahamian aesthetic that would become a tradition for future generations of Bahamians. While the goods were not of their own manufacture, the choices were theirs from the selection available to them. At the same time, those of British heritage were signaling their British identity through their consumer choices. However, Clifton was unusual in being owned by a reformer who sought to ameliorate the conditions of slavery. The paper also briefly discusses whether these concepts are useful in understanding the material culture of enslaved Africans at other sites. 展开更多

Along with the process of globalization, diaspora has already become an eye-catching cultural phenomenon. More people cross borders of nations, leave their homeland and live in new homes, but they still maintain the characteristics of native culture and convention. The cultural turn in translation studies offers the best chance to understand more about the complexities of textual transfer and the patterns of cultural interaction. By virtue of this mode of cultural interaction, this paper has analyzed the translation practice and translation strategies from the cultural diaspora perspective, to deeply understand the relations between translation and culture beyond linguistic analysis. As in-between culture identity translators may re-examine two cultures with different eyes to find the intersection of two cultures and gain a balanced point. This move requires translators who play the role of intermediaries between cultures, to select the heterogeneous reconstruction, so as to achieve the intercultural communication in the translation activity 展开更多
