Recently, such holistic thinking has been proposed to be applicable to Western medicine practices for alleviating serious side effects;however, the obscure and often ill-defined terms of TCM, such as qi, yin yang, and wuxing, pose considerable obstacles for further understanding TCM. In the present study, we explored whether and how TCM is actually related to the scientific construct of holistic thinking, to elucidate the particular cultural signature of TCM. Methods: A random sample of 101 college students majoring in TCM and 93 non-medical college students was recruited for the study. Two psychological scales—the Chinese Holistic Thinking Scale and the TCM Competence Scale were used respectively to measure the holistic thinking and participants’ ability to apply the TCM in practice. Results: We found that individuals who thought more holistically were better at applying TCM to modern medical problems. Interestingly, TCM was associated with holistic thinking in both TCM and non-medical students, suggesting that this association is intrinsic. Further exploration revealed that the association and variability facets of Eastern holistic thinking—which emphasize that the world is interconnected and ever-changing, respectively—significantly accounted for the individual differences in competence in utilizing TCM in practice. Conclusion: In short, our study provides the first empirical evidence linking TCM to the Eastern holistic thinking style, which not only deepens the understanding of TCM from a scientific perspective but also promotes dialogue between TCM and Western medicine for building safer and more effective health care systems.展开更多

OBJECTIVE: To observe the therapeutic effects of Bushen Yiqi (tonifying kidney to benefit qi), Huoxue Huayu (promoting blood circulation to dissipate blood stasis) and Ditan Kaiqiao (eliminating phlegm for resuscitation) on the expressions of c-Fos and c-Jun proteins in hippocampus and spontaneous behaviors of rats with post-stroke depression (PSD), and compare the results with those of fluoxetine, which is known to have definite effect on depression. DESIGN: A randomized controlled tna SETTING : Zhejiang College of Traditional Chinese Medicine MATERIALS : The trial was completed in Zhejiang College of Traditional Chinese Medicine from January to July in 2003. Fifty-six healthy adult Wistar male rats of clean grade, weighing (250±50) g, were randomly divided into 7 groups with 8 rats in each group: control group, model group, forced swimming group, Bushen Yiqi group; Huoxue Huayu, Ditan Kaiqiao group and fluoxetine group. The Bushen Yiqi Tang contained Renshen, Huangqi, Heshouwu, Gouqi, Shudi, etc., crude drugs 1 800 g/L. The Huoxue Huayu Tang contained Danshen, Chuanxiong, Chishao, Yujin, etc., crude drugs 3 600 g/L. The Ditan Kaiqiao Tang contained Banxia, Danxing, Changpu, Yuanzhi, etc., crude drug 1 000 g/b METHODS: ① Except the control group and forced swimming group, rats in the other groups were made into PSD models by deligating the bilateral common carotid artedes permanently. ② Rats in the control group, model group and forced swimming group were intragastncally perfused by saline (3 mL for each time); those in the Bushen Yiqi group, Huoxue Huayu, Ditan Kaiqiao group and fluoxetine group were intragastncally perfused with Bushen Yiqi Tang (18 g/kg), Huoxue Huayu Tang (9 g/kg), Ditan Kaiqiao Tang (9 g/kg) and fluoxetine (2.5 mg/kg) respectively, once a day. ③ At 55 days after model establishment, rats in the forced swimming group were managed according to the Porsolt's method. They were placed in water for 15 minutes, and then taken out and dned, no moving-time within 5 minutes was recorded at drying and 24 hours after drying. ④ Measurement of spontaneous behaviors: Except the forced swimming group, the spontaneous behaviors and activities (including horizontal and vertical movements) of rats were observed with the Open-Field method at 28, 42 and 56 days after administration in the other groups. ⑤ The expressions of c-Fos and coJun proteins in hippocampus were determined with the immunohistochemical method, the relative sectional area ratio and average objective gray value of c-Fos and c-Jun positive cells in hip- pocampus were measured with the computerized image analytical system. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The spontaneous behaviors of rats, the relative sectional area ratio and average objective gray value of c-Fos and c-Jun positive cells in hippocampus were observed. RESULTS: Of the 56 rats, 1 died in the forced swimming group, and finally 55 rats were involved in the analysis of results. ① Results of spontaneous activities: At 28 days, the times of crossing movements were obviously fewer in the model group and fluoxetine group [(69.00±37.01), (98.11 ±36.68) times/3 minutes] than in the control group [(128.44±16.85) times/3 minutes, P 〈 0.01, 0.05], but those in the Bushen Yiqi group, Huoxue Quyu group and Ditan Kaiqiao group had no obvious differences as compared with those in the control group (P 〉 0.05). At 42 and 56 days, the times of crossing movements were obviously more in the Bushen Yiqi group, Huoxue Quyu group and Ditan Kaiqiao group [(106.44±31.24), (117.20±23.95), (134.80±28.18), (136.36±40.95) times/3 minutes; (117.33±35.91), (129.60 ±23.78), (131.90 ±26.81), (136.09±28.34) times/3 minutes] than in the model group [(64.00±17.51), (72.86±20.68) times/3 minutes, P 〈 0.01]. The times of rearing movements had no obvious differences among the groups for the three times (P 〉 0.05). ② The no moving-time within 5 minutes 24 hours after drying was obviously longer than that at drying in the forced swimming group. ③ The average objective gray values of c-Fos positive cells were not obviously different in the Bushen Yiqi group and Ditan Kaiqiao group from the control group (P 〉 0.05), but lower in the model group than in the control group (69.84±9.82, 75.78±5.89, P 〈 0.01), and higher in the forced swimming group than in the control group (85.97±10.99, P 〈 0.01); all higher in the fluoxetine group, Bushen Yiqi group, Huoxue Quyu group and Ditan Kaiqiao group than in the model group (81.27±10.73, 74.04±8.34, 83.29±9.89, 70.14±4.92, P 〈 0.05-0.01). The average objective gray values of c-Jun positive cells were obviously lower in the Bushen Yiqi group than in the control group (68.11 ±6.89, 79.58±5.86, P 〈 0.01), but all higher in the other groups than in the control group (84.68±7.15, 81.34 ±8.36, 97.51±10.55, 85.68±9.25, 86.19±10.98, P 〈 0.05-0.01); Those were obviously higher in the fluoxetine group, Huoxue Quyu group and Ditan Kaiqiao group than in the model group (P 〈 0.05-0.01 ), lower in the Bushen Yiqi group than in the model group (P 〈 0.05), all obviously lower in the Bushen Yiqi group, Huoxue Quyu group and Ditan Kaiqiao group than in the fluoxetine group (P 〈 0.01). The relative sectional area ratios of c-Fos and c-Jun positive cells had no obvious differences among the groups (P 〉 0.05). CONCLUSION : The methods of Bushen Yiqi, Huoxue Quyu and Ditan Kaiqiao can effectively treat PSD in rats, and the results were equivalent with those of fluoxetine, the actions of the above-mentioned drugs may correlated with their regulation to c-Fos and c-Jun expressions in hippocampus. PSD animal models can be successfully established by both permanent deligation of bilateral common carotid arteries and forced swimming, and the models induced by the former has similar basic cerebrovascular lesions as human stroke in clinic.展开更多

Methodologically, a distinctive feature of CM is its systems theory, which is also the difference between CM and WM. Since the birth of CM, it has taken the human body as a whole from the key concepts of "qi, blood, yin-yang, viscera (Zang-Fu), and meridian and channel", rather than a single cell or a particular organ. WM evolves from the Westem philosophic way of thinking and merely uses natural sciences as the foundation. The development of WM is based on human structures, or anatomy, and therefore, research of WM is also based on the way of thinking of decomposing the whole human body into several independent parts, which is the impetus of promoting the development of WM. The core of CM includes the holistic view and the dialectical view. Chinese herbal medicines contain various components and treat a disease from multiple targets and links. Therefore, Chinese herbal medicines treat a diseased state by regulating and mobilizing the whole body rather than just regulating a single factor, since the diseased state is not only a problem in a local part of the body but a local reflection of imbalance of the whole body.展开更多

文摘Background:Traditional Chinese medicines are usually processed before they are used for clinical treatment. This is done in a way associated with the Maillard reaction. Methods:Based on the Maillard reaction, this paper analyzed the degree of processing of rehmannia root(Rehmanniae radix)relative to the dynamic variation rules of Maillard reaction index parameters, including pH,A420,amino acids, and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural.Furthermore,this study introduced thermal analysis techniques and pyrolysis kinetics to assess the influence of the correlation between processing raw rehmannia root and the Maillard reaction during carbonization. It then went through the whole process of transforming the raw material to end-product in order to explain the scientific connotation of processing it.Results:The results showed that each time rehmannia root was processed, its pH value and amino acid content decreased, while the A420 value and 5-HMF increased.Processing with wine shows a significant difference in these experimental indexes. The position and intensity of the maximum thermal weight loss rate peak of processed rehmannia root at different degrees of processing are different.Comprehensive quantitative 221±0.2°C for processed rehmannia root carbonization was the processing temperature limit. Moreover, the kinetic solution verified that the activation energy corresponding to the carbonization temperature was close to the maximum value of the activation energy of the whole carbonization process, and the optimal mechanism function was g(α)=((1−α)−1/3−1)2.Conclusion:The Maillard reaction occurred during the processing of rehmannia root mixed with carbonization. With each increase of the number of steaming and drying cycles involved in the processing, the level of Maillard reaction increased significantly. The wine-steaming method had a significant effect on the quality of the processed product.
文摘Anguo, known as Qizhou in ancient time, its herbs industry began in Song Dynasty, boomed in Ming, and flourished in Qing.During the development of Qizhou herbs industry,a number of special processing techniques of Chinese Materia Medicine were produced."Qizhou's Four Uniqueness",of which, the most representative medicine includes"Hundred pieces areca","Cicada feather of Qingxia","Yunpian deer antler"and"Pound Rhinoceros unicornis L".To investigate the present inheritance situation of the traditional processing technology of Chinese Materia Medicine in Anguo herbs market,we will consult literature including the ancient books and records,Anguo local chronicles and visit the inheritors of the traditional processing technology in Anguo, and research the processing technology historical origin. This study aims to create the Anguo herbs cultural card, and enrich the cultural heritage of Chinese medicine industry of Anguo country even Hebei province.

文摘[Objectives]To study and compare the processing methods of Ziziphus jujuba Mill.[Methods]Z.jujuba was processed by seven methods:cleaning, yellowish frying, burnt frying, carbonized frying, moistening by hot sand, steaming, and boiling.Ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry was used to determine the content of total flavonoids in each processed Z.jujuba.[Results]The content of total flavonoids measured by various processing methods was different. The content of total flavonoids in the processed Z.jujuba by moistening by hot sand was relatively high and the absorption peak spectrum was almost the same as that of the cleaned processed Z.jujuba and the rutin reference substance.[Conclusions]The moistening by hot sand is the optimal method for processing of Z.jujuba.
文摘The interpromotion and restraint of the five elements is the self-regulation mechanism of the five elements system under normal conditions. For the human viscera,by comparing the images, deducing and classifying the attributes of things, the human viscera are connected with the five elements, and it is concluded that the Liver belongs to Wood and the Kidney belongs to Water.According to the law of mutual generation and restriction between the five elements, the pathogenic causes, pathogenesis and relationship with other viscera of the Liver and Kidney can be known,so as to establish corresponding treatment methods, such as"Nourishing Water and protecting Wood"(providing Kidney for the growth of Liver method),"Golden Water symbiosis"(generation between the Lung and Kidney),"Cultivating soil and generating gold"(warming the Kidney and benefited Spleen method),Supporting lung to suppress Liver, purging heart Fire to nourish renal Water method, etc. It is of referential significance for the treatment of Liver and Kidney diseases in the diagnosis and treatment of traditional Chinese medicine.

文摘To explore advantages of Chinese medicine (CM) by analyzing differences in the origin of philosophy for human health between CM and Westem medicine (WM). Therefore, Chinese herbal medicines treat a diseased state by regulating and mobilizing the whole body rather than just regulating a single factor, since the diseased state is not only a problem in a local part of the body but a local reflection of imbalance of the whole body.
