Factors affecting farmers'choice to adopt risk management strategies:The application of multivariate and multinomial probit models

This study investigates the factors that impact farmers'adoption of risk management strategies(RMS)in Pakistan during times of uncertainty.The study examines farmers'adoption of RMS using both multinomial probit(MNP)and multivariate probit(MVP).Data were collected from 382 farmers sampled from four districts in KhyberPakhtunkhwa(KP)province of Pakistan via a multistage sampling technique.This study utilizes the MNP model,considering the assumption of Independence of Irrelevant Alternatives(IIA)and incorporating correlated error terms.The objective is to understand farmers'behavior in risky situations and determine if there is heterogeneity.Results are compared with the MVP model to assess robustness and gain deeper understanding of farmers'decisionmaking processes.The research findings reveal that our results are robust,and farmers behave homogeneously in various RMS scenarios.Farmers adopt RMS individually or in combination to mitigate the adverse effects of natural calamities on their livelihood.The risk-averse farmers,who perceive weather-related risks as a threat,access credits and information,and have farms close to a river are more likely to adopt RMS,irrespective of the format of the strategies available.Moreover,the predicted probabilities and correlation of the RMS and RM categories have strengthened our model estimation.These findings provide insights into the behavior of farmers in adopting RMS which are helpful for policymakers and stakeholders in developing strategies to mitigate the impacts of natural calamities on farmers.

An Assessment of Procurement Risks Management Systems in the Public Sector

Risk management in public procurement is a critical aspect that needs to be addressed in the public sector.Several studies have been conducted to understand the challenges and factors influencing risk management in public procurement.These studies have explored the importance of risk management principles,the role of political influence,and the need for effective risk assessment and anticipation.The research has also highlighted the need for specific risk management mechanisms and tools to be implemented in public procurement processes.Risk management reforms in the public sector are essential but often circumvented due to assorted reasons,such as political influence and the emergence of new risks.The research investigation employs a quantitative research design.A total of 380 questionnaires were recovered from respondents.The study showed that the public sector has a procurement risk management system that is effective,but there may be some areas for improvement in the prequalification process,onboarding process,and support provided to newly onboarded suppliers.Additionally,the public sector used some strategies to mitigate and control contract risks during the procurement process,but there were some areas for improvement in the review and lessons learned process,risk mitigation measures,contract monitoring and performance evaluation mechanisms,and communication and documentation process.Finally,the results suggest that there were constraints placed on the risk management strategies currently utilized by professionals working in the public sector.These constraints include insufficient support and buy-in from senior management and stakeholders,bureaucratic or administrative hurdles,inadequate policies and regulations,insufficient training and skill development opportunities,and insufficient resources.The study highlights the significance of tackling risk management in the realm of public procurement and offers valuable perspectives on avenues for enhancement,obstacles encountered by practitioners,and the necessity of thorough evaluation and revisions.Through the adoption of the suggestions originating from this study,governmental entities can improve their procurement risk management frameworks and guarantee improved adherence to risk management principles.

Predictive Analytics for Project Risk Management Using Machine Learning

Risk management is relevant for every project that which seeks to avoid and suppress unanticipated costs, basically calling for pre-emptive action. The current work proposes a new approach for handling risks based on predictive analytics and machine learning (ML) that can work in real-time to help avoid risks and increase project adaptability. The main research aim of the study is to ascertain risk presence in projects by using historical data from previous projects, focusing on important aspects such as time, task time, resources and project results. t-SNE technique applies feature engineering in the reduction of the dimensionality while preserving important structural properties. This process is analysed using measures including recall, F1-score, accuracy and precision measurements. The results demonstrate that the Gradient Boosting Machine (GBM) achieves an impressive 85% accuracy, 82% precision, 85% recall, and 80% F1-score, surpassing previous models. Additionally, predictive analytics achieves a resource utilisation efficiency of 85%, compared to 70% for traditional allocation methods, and a project cost reduction of 10%, double the 5% achieved by traditional approaches. Furthermore, the study indicates that while GBM excels in overall accuracy, Logistic Regression (LR) offers more favourable precision-recall trade-offs, highlighting the importance of model selection in project risk management.

Enterprise Risk Management Under the Asset-Light Strategy Mode

Safety risk management of underground engineering in China：Progress, challenges and strategies

Underground construction in China is featured by large scale, high speed, long construction period,complex operation and frustrating situations regarding project safety. Various accidents have been reported from time to time, resulting in serious social impact and huge economic loss. This paper presents the main progress in the safety risk management of underground engineering in China over the last decade, i.e.（1） establishment of laws and regulations for safety risk management of underground engineering,（2） implementation of the safety risk management plan,（3） establishment of decision support system for risk management and early-warning based on information technology, and（4） strengthening the study on safety risk management, prediction and prevention. Based on the analysis of the typical accidents in China in the last decade, the new challenges in the safety risk management for underground engineering are identified as follows：（1） control of unsafe human behaviors;（2） technological innovation in safety risk management; and（3） design of safety risk management regulations. Finally, the strategies for safety risk management of underground engineering in China are proposed in six aspects, i.e. the safety risk management system and policy, law, administration, economy, education and technology.

The Application of Transaction Cost Theory in Supply Chain Management

In the context of globalization and digitalization, the application of transaction cost theory in supply chain management has become increasingly important. As business environments grow more complex, enterprises face challenges in effectively managing supply chain transaction costs. This paper systematically explores the application of transaction cost theory in supply chain management, covering key areas such as supplier selection, supply chain integration, and risk management. The research finds that supplier evaluation models based on transaction costs can help enterprises make more comprehensive selection decisions. In terms of supply chain integration, transaction cost theory provides important guidance for vertical integration decisions and the design of collaboration mechanisms. Impact of risk management strategies on the credit risk faced by commercial banks of Balochistan

This study aims to identify risk management strategies undertaken by the commercial banks of Balochistan,Pakistan,to mitigate or eliminate credit risk.The findings of the study are significant as commercial banks will understand the effectiveness of various risk management strategies and may apply them for minimizing credit risk.This explanatory study analyses the opinions of the employees of selected commercial banks about which strategies are useful for mitigating credit risk.Quantitative data was collected from 250 employees of commercial banks to perform multiple regression analyses,which were used for the analysis.The results identified four areas of impact on credit risk management(CRM):corporate governance exerts the greatest impact,followed by diversification,which plays a significant role,hedging and,finally,the bank’s Capital Adequacy Ratio.This study highlights these four risk management strategies,which are critical for commercial banks to resolve their credit risk.

Corporate Risk Strategic Management and Probabilistic Analysis Related to Environmental Liabilities: A Case Study

Environmental stewardship is one of the main indicators of corporate performance and reputation among investors today. However, historical operational practices and accidents have created significant environmental liabilities in the industrial sector, and now require significant investments for appropriate management and resolution. A strategic approach is imperative to assure that company’s financial resources are effectively allocated, and shareholders’ interests are protected. In addition, these liabilities must be appropriately and continuously reported, which require the use of robust forecasting techniques such as Monte Carlo Simulation. The present study results demonstrate that under an optimized strategic approach, liability management costs may be reduced in approximately 50%. In addition, the financial forecast under the selected approach may support appropriate reporting of company’s liabilities.

Integration of a Dolomite Risk Management Programme in Local Governance in South Africa: Tlokwe City Council

Development on dolomite poses a risk to people and their assets living on it. Although development in the Tlokwe City Council (TCC) broadly took cognisance of the presence of dolomite, some parts of the township had been developed on dolomite. Therefore, since the Council is accountable for safe development within its jurisdiction, a Dolomite Risk Management Programme (DRMPr) should be put in place according to prevailing legislation, standards and guidelines. For long-term mitigation measures to be implemented successfully, the DRMPr should be integrated and aligned within the existing structure and processes of the Council. This exercise is described, with some challenges identified and recommendations made, for consideration in the same or similar programmes in future.

Evaluation of Global Operational Competitiveness With Risk Management

This paper is aiming to connect previous research in global competitiveness analysis, taking the impact of the global financial crisis into account, to evaluate how manufacturing companies are able to manage crisis by adjusting their manufacturing strategy and transformational leadership together with technology level to improve their global operational competitiveness performances. Based on the previous research, we developed a theoretical approach of modeling the core factors which influence the operational competitiveness performance （i.e., manufacturing strategy and transformational leadership with technology level）, into conceptual analytical models to evaluate overall competitiveness. The empirical studies are focused on manufacturing companies in China, Finland, Slovakia, Iceland, and Spain. The case companies are evaluated with the proposed analytical models and their performances are compared in global context to conclude the experience of crisis management.

Research on strategic risk identification method of equipment system development based on system dynamics

Strategic management of equipment system develop-ment must attach importance to effective strategic risk manage-ment.Aiming at the identification of strategic risk of equipment system development,firstly,the source of strategic risk of equip-ment system development is analyzed and classified.Based on this,a causal loop diagram of strategic risk of equipment sys-tem development based on system dynamics is established.The system dynamics analysis software Vensim PLE is used to carry out the risk influencing factors analysis,risk consequences ana-lysis,risk feedback loop identification and corresponding pre-control measures,and achieves a good risk identification effect.

Liver injury in COVID-19: Clinical features, potential mechanisms, risk factors and clinical treatments

The coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic has been a serious threat to global health for nearly 3 years.In addition to pulmonary complications,liver injury is not uncommon in patients with novel COVID-19.Although the prevalence of liver injury varies widely among COVID-19 patients,its incidence is significantly increased in severe cases.Hence,there is an urgent need to understand liver injury caused by COVID-19.Clinical features of liver injury include detectable liver function abnormalities and liver imaging changes.Liver function tests,computed tomography scans,and ultrasound can help evaluate liver injury.Risk factors for liver injury in patients with COVID-19 include male sex,preexisting liver disease including liver transplantation and chronic liver disease,diabetes,obesity,and hypertension.To date,the mechanism of COVID-19-related liver injury is not fully understood.Its pathophysiological basis can generally be explained by systemic inflammatory response,hypoxic damage,ischemia-reperfusion injury,and drug side effects.In this review,we systematically summarize the existing literature on liver injury caused by COVID-19,including clinical features,underlying mechanisms,and potential risk factors.Finally,we discuss clinical management and provide recommendations for the care of patients with liver injury.

Farmers’Demand for Informal Risk Management Strategy and Weather Index Insurance:Evidence from China

In the absence of formal risk management strategies,agricultural production in China is highly vulnerable to climate change.In this study,field experiments were conducted with 344 households in Heilongjiang(Northeast China)and Jiangsu(East China)Provinces.Probit and logistic models and independent sample T-test were used to explore farmers’demand for weather index insurance,in contrast to informal risk management strategies,and the main factors that affect demand.The results show that the farmers prefer weather index insurance to informal risk management strategies,and farmers’characteristics have significant impacts on their adoption of risk management strategies.The variables non-agricultural labor ratio,farmers’risk perception,education,and agricultural insurance purchase experience significantly affect farmers’weather index insurance demand.The regression results show that the farmers’weather index insurance demand and the influencing factors in the two provinces are different.Farmers in Heilongjiang Province have a higher participation rate than those in Jiangsu Province.The government should conduct more weather index insurance pilot programs to help farmers understand the mechanism,and insurance companies should provide more types of weather index insurance to meet farmers’diversified needs.
