On the Road, written by Jack Kerouac, thoroughly illustrates youngsters’pursuit of individuality and freedom after the second world war.In the novel, character Dean Moriarty shows his discontent and rebellion to that full-of-restraints society through his journeys and many mad behaviors.Textual analysis and exemplification with combination of historical background will be used to interpret Dean’s ethical identity.Dean wants to break away from the restraints, which granted by ethical identities, and search for a authentic life. However, each one of his journeys ends up with coming back to his former life, which indicates his compromise to social reality.Though Dean isn’t truly out of that consumption-oriented society, his braveness to express his discontent and rebellion inspires many people to take on their own roads and show their individuality. 展开更多
