ChatGPT as an Educational Tool: Opportunities, Challenges, and Recommendations for Communication, Business Writing, and Composition Courses

This empirical study examines ChatGPT as an educational and learning tool.It investigates the opportunities and challenges that ChatGPT provides to the students and instructors of communication,business writing,and composition courses.It also strives to provide recommendations.After conducting 30 theory-based and application-based ChatGPT tests,it is found that ChatGPT has the potential of replacing search engines as it provides accurate and reliable input to students.For opportunities,the study found that ChatGPT provides a platform for students to seek answers to theory-based questions and generate ideas for application-based questions.It also provides a platform for instructors to integrate technology in classrooms and conduct workshops to discuss and evaluate generated responses.For challenges,the study found that ChatGPT,if unethically used by students,may lead to human unintelligence and unlearning.This may also present a challenge to instructors as the use of ChatGPT negatively affects their ability to differentiate between meticulous and automation-dependent students,on the one hand,and measure the achievement of learning outcomes,on the other hand.Based on the outcome of the analysis,this study recommends communication,business writing,and composition instructors to(1)refrain from making theory-based questions as take-home assessments,(2)provide communication and business writing students with detailed case-based and scenario-based assessment tasks that call for personalized answers utilizing critical,creative,and imaginative thinking incorporating lectures and textbook material,(3)enforce submitting all take-home assessments on plagiarism detection software,especially for composition courses,and(4)integrate ChatGPT generated responses in classes as examples to be discussed in workshops.Remarkably,this study found that ChatGPT skillfully paraphrases regenerated responses in a way that is not detected by similarity detection software.To maintain their effectiveness,similarity detection software providers need to upgrade their software to avoid such incidents from slipping unnoticed.

Evaluation of Technical Education by Using a Modern Structured MOODLE Laboratory Course, in Relation to Recent Data

E-learning platforms support education systems worldwide, transferring theoretical knowledge as well as soft skills. In the present study high-school pupils’, and adult students’ opinions were evaluated through a modern structured MOODLE interactive course, designed for the needs of the laboratory course “Automotive Systems”. The study concerns Greek secondary vocational education pupils aged 18 and vocational training adult students aged 20 to 50 years. The multistage, equal size simple random cluster sample was used as a sampling method. Pupils and adult students of each cluster completed structured 10-question questionnaires both before and after attending the course. A total of 120 questionnaires were collected. In general, our findings disclosed that the majority of pupils and adult students had significantly improved their knowledge and skills from using MOODLE. They reported strengthening conventional teaching, using the new MOODLE technology. The satisfaction indices improved quite, with the differences in their mean values being statistically significant.

A Communicative Approach to Spoken English Course Design

Speaking competence is one of the basic skills of language acquisition.The teaching of speaking skill has been attached great importance to in College English education in China.For decades,people have made efforts to improve the classroom teaching effects through various means,one of which is that of communicative approach.This paper attempts to explore the design of a spoken English lesson through a case study in the light of communicative theory,thus providing an alternative to the conventional spoken English course teaching method.

Doctor-patient communication starts from medical students

Currently,with the increasing tensionin doctor-patient relationship and medical disputes,it is of great practical importance to train medical students’communication skills in order to establisha harmonious doctor-patient relationship to improve the quality of clinical teaching.This paper emphasizes the importance of cultivation of communication skills in medical education and suggests ways to improve communication skills among medical students.

Effective doctor-patient communication skills training optimizes functional organization of intrinsic brain architecture:a restingstate functional MRI study

We studied the influence of doctor-patient communication skills training on brain functional architecture using resting-state functional MRI（rs-fMRI） with a regional homogeneity（ReHo） method. Ten medical students participated in the study. A 1-year long doctor-patient communication skills training program was conducted. RsfMRI data were collected at baseline, one month and one year after training. There was a significant increase in the communication skills test average scores between baseline and 1-month duration of training（P〈0.001）. After one month of communication skills training, medical students had decreased ReHo in the right superior temporal gyrus compared with the baseline. After one year of communication skills training, students had increased ReHo in multiple regions and decreased ReHo in several regions（P 〈0.05, Alphasim corrected）. The change of ReHo values in the superior temporal gyrus negatively correlated with the change of communication skills scale score between one month after communication skills training and baseline（r=-0.734, P= 0.036）. The training program we used can be an effective approach of improving doctor-patient communication skills, and the training resulted in functional plasticity of the brain’s architecture toward optimizing locally functional organization.

Research on psychological factors which influence Doctor-Patient communications among outpatients

An Outpatient Department is the first point of contact with the hospital, and good Doctor-Patient communication would improve the service quality of the hospital, so it is important to construct a harmonious Doctor-Patient relationship. This article, from the perspective of psychology, investigates into the common psychological factors which affect the Doctor-Patient communication, the appearance of the communication problem, and make suggestions on possible solutions accordingly.

Functional Health Literacy and Doctor-Patient Communication: Experiences of HIV/AIDS Patients in Homa Bay County, Kenya

Patient involvement in the health care process has been documented as a critical component of successful disease management. However, inadequate functional health literacy among patients is a well-known barrier to effective doctor-patient communication, which has an adverse effect on health outcomes. This study aimed at investigating the association of functional health literacy and doctor-patient communication among HIV/AIDS patients in Homa Bay County, Kenya. It was a cross-sectional hospital-based survey conducted among 362 HIV/AIDS patients receiving care at the eight sub-county hospitals of Homa Bay county. Data was collected using a self-administered structured questionnaire. Cronbach’s alpha and confirmatory factor analysis tests were used to ascertain the reliability and validity of study instruments, while Logistic regression logistic analysis was used to measure the association between functional health literacy and doctor-patient communication. 51% of the respondents were females, and the majority (30.9%) of respondents fell in the age group of 45 years and above. The respondents’ functional health literacy levels were inadequate at weighted means scores of 3.23 [SD 1.31]. The study further established that functional health literacy significantly influenced doctor-patient communication [Nagelkerke R square = 0.318]. There is, therefore, a need to document the determinants of functional health literacy to improve it and make doctor-patient interaction an enjoyable and meaningful experience.

A Holistic Course Design for Intercultural Business Communication Based on CLT A Case Study of a Training Program for Chinese Business Professionals

BE （Business English） has been unprecedentedly emphasized and gradually developed into an independent discipline. The paper aims to explore a holistic course design for business professionals in IBC （Intercultural Business Communication） based on CLT （Communicative Language Teaching）. The proposed course design encompasses three-dimensional contents： comprehensive language and expertise training, intercultural communicative competence cultivation, and intercultural PBL （project-based learning）. A survey is conducted in a training program of Chinese business professionals in international institutions. Three principles are identified： （1） BE teaching is need-oriented, so the pedagogical methods should be tailored to meet the international workplace requirements; （2） The linguistic and professional knowledge acquisition is achieved through communicative function of the target language; and （3） Learners＇ participation in intercultural PBL can stimulate learners＇ interest and enhance their operational capabilities. The findings of the case study indicate that a holistic course design is： （1） Course syllabus should not be formed without taking the leamers＇ expectation and feedback into consideration; （2） Teaching strategies should be innovated to enhance learners＇ communicative confidence and competence; and （3） Teaching materials should be adapted and subjected to modification according to the authentic language used in intercultural settings. The study outcomes may also shed light on other disciplines of ESP teaching.

On Satellite Communications Course Reform in Universities of 211 Project

Satellite communications is not only a key technical for students who major in information subject must know well, but also a satellite cultural background course at the information age. Based on the current situation and characteristics of Universities of 211 Project, such as teaching objectives, course settings, and too much categories of professional courses but class hour reduced. From the point of view of teaching contents and methods, the reform contents and the characteristic requirements of the satellite communications course are presented, especially, the proposed reform to satellite communications materials and experimental content can meet the needs of the new times.

A Study on Doctor-patient Communication under Defler Interaction Process Model

At present,doctor-patient relationship has become a sensitive topic in society,and frequent doctor-patient communication problems have become an important factor affecting the tension of the relationship.From the perspective of communication,this paper analyzes the causes of doctor-patient communication barriers based on the communication mode of interaction process proposed by Deffler and puts forward relevant solutions.

The Obstacles on Learning European Communication at Foreign Language Course in Malang Raya

Communication inevitably becomes an essential part of interaction among people in every part of the world.Foreign language course provides opportunities for those who need to improve their foreign language skills like English,French,and German.However,this course finds some obstacles to the learning process like different curriculum,teaching technique,the background of the target language,pattern,as well as its culture.This research aims to dig out the learner’s obstacles and solutions in learning European language on communication at a foreign language course in Malang Raya.As the number of participants who put their interest more in learning European language course is growing,this research applied descriptive quantitative method by taking the population from the learners of European foreign language courses with purposive sampling.Meanwhile,the instrument used was a questionnaire,and it was analyzed by using the percentage formula.The finding shows that the obstacles to learning European communication consist of linguistic and non-linguistic obstacles,whereas the solutions done are various.

慢性非传染性疾病病因研究内容与方法的发展趋势

慢性非传染性疾病(简称慢性病)具有起病隐匿、病程长、病情迁延不愈的特点,并且呈现动态发展过程,其病因具有多效性、稳健性和重塑性特性,因而使人体的健康状态和疾病过程呈现一种相互交织的网络形态。因此,需要打破还原论的静态思维,在研究策略上向系统生物学的复杂性思维转变。充分发挥多组学技术优势,以整合理念为核心,关注研究对象在基因组—暴露组—表型组多层次的相互作用,揭示疾病在全生命周期中不同阶段、不同组学层次间呈现的动态性、多效性、适应性的网络关联。将研究的视角从“单一疾病”转变为“多病”医学,以“疾病为导向”转变为“以人为导向”,从多维度、多层次、多时点的病因网络出发,探明在慢性病发生发展过程中发挥关键作用的分子标志物集群已成为慢性病病因学研究的前沿热点。

互联网医院全程管理对慢性非传染性疾病患者服药依从性及生活质量影响的Meta分析

目的评价互联网医院全程管理对慢性非传染性疾病(简称慢性病)患者服药依从性及生活质量的影响。方法计算机检索PubMed、Embase、Web of Science、The Cochrane Library、中国知网、中国生物医学文献数据库、万方数据库、维普数据库及手动检索数据库中关于互联网医院全程管理对慢性病患者管理效果的随机对照试验,检索时限为建库起至2022年3月。由2名经过循证护理培训的研究者独立筛选文献、质量评价、提取资料,采用RevMan5.3软件进行Meta分析。结果共纳入13篇文献(涉及5239例患者),纳入文献的方法学质量较高,但异质性较大。Meta分析结果显示,实验组(在传统慢性病管理的基础上采用互联网医院全程管理)服药依从性优于对照组(采用传统慢性病管理模式)[OR=3.02,95%CI(1.98,4.60),Z=5.15,P<0.01],生活质量得分高于对照组[SMD=0.90,95%CI(0.32,1.48),Z=3.04,P<0.01],差异均具有统计学意义;对患者服药依从性进行敏感性分析显示,各研究间无异质性(I²=6%,P<0.01),合并效应值OR=4.15(Z=5.61,P<0.01)。结论目前证据表明,互联网医院全程管理可提高慢性病患者服药依从性、改善其生活质量,建议今后开展更多高质量、多中心的随机对照研究,为未来互联网医院全程管理模式的推广使用提供更有力的循证依据。

EXPLOITING THE LANGUAGE LAB: A WAY TO FIT LAB-BASED LISTENING COURSES INTO THE COMMUNICATIVE FRAMEWORK

This paperlanalyzes why the language laboratory still has an important role to play in ELT in China. Two methods of incorporating lab-based courses into a communicative framework, involving classroom interaction patterns and task-based listening materials, are suggested, and a model lesson applying these two methods is presented.

基于不同生源的高职护理专业课程教学改革初探——以《传染病护理学》课程教学为例

护理专业课程教学改革是培养高质量的高职护理专业人才的关键,其中护理专业学生生源、层次不同是高职护理专业课程教学改革的最大难点。基于此,在《传染病护理学》课程中将学生按照生源分成了普高班、中职专班和混合班,根据不同班级的特点,选择不同的教学内容和教学方法。通过对比三个班级的期末考核结果发现,普高班和中职专班学生学习效果好于混合班。因此,采用分类编班、分层次教学有利于激发学生学习的主动性和积极性,提高教学质量。

Humanity factors and more: A little heads up for medical students and future doctors

Exactly how can we become a successful doctor in the future? It has been widely accepted that chasing perfection in our field of expertise alone is not enough. Here in China, doctors have the liability to do more. Chinese doctors are relatively more prone to confronting difficult situations in a more complex manner. Therefore, the humanity factor in medical practice is discussed, and some essential communication skills are suggested for medical practitioners, with heartfelt anticipation for a better medical environment as well as a more pleasant Doctor-Patient relationship.
