Study on failure of soft stratum of roller compacted concrete (RCC) is an important aspect of stability of high RCC dam. Six kinds of specimens with different interfaces were investigated by wedge splitting method. Double-K fracture parameters (initial fracture parameter and unsteady fracture parameter) were calculated by the concrete double-K fracture theory. It is indicated that the approach of construction joint or old joint after RCC final set is the most efficient among the six cases, and its fracture parameter is the largest among them. Its propagation path is sinuous. Its failure surface is scraggly. Bedding plane crack fails at the underside of the concrete surface, bond course or the surface between them for each approach. So disturbance on the underside of the concrete surface should be avoided or decreased at best during RCC construction. 展开更多

Based on the actual data collected from the tight sandstone development zone, correlation analysis using theSpearman method was conducted to determine the main factors influencing the gas production rate of tightsandstone fracturing. An integrated model combining geological engineering and numerical simulation of fracturepropagation and production was completed. Based on data analysis, the hydraulic fracture parameters wereoptimized to develop a differentiated fracturing treatment adjustment plan. The results indicate that the influenceof geological and engineering factors in the X1 and X2 development zones in the study area differs significantly. Therefore, it is challenging to adopt a uniform development strategy to achieve rapid production increase. Thedata analysis reveals that the variation in gas production rate is primarily affected by the reservoir thickness andpermeability parameters as geological factors. On the other hand, the amount of treatment fluid and proppantaddition significantly impact the gas production rate as engineering factors. Among these factors, the influence ofgeological factors is more pronounced in block X1. Therefore, the main focus should be on further optimizing thefracturing interval and adjusting the geological development well location. Given the existing well location, thereis limited potential for further optimizing fracture parameters to increase production. For block X2, the fracturingparameters should be optimized. Data screening was conducted to identify outliers in the entire dataset, and adata-driven fracturing parameter optimization method was employed to determine the basic adjustment directionfor reservoir stimulation in the target block. This approach provides insights into the influence of geological, stimulation, and completion parameters on gas production rate. Consequently, the subsequent fracturing parameteroptimization design can significantly reduce the modeling and simulation workload and guide field operations toimprove and optimize hydraulic fracturing efficiency. 展开更多

The existence of aligned fractures in fluid-saturated rocks leads to obvious attenuation anisotropy and velocity anisotropy. Attenuation anisotropy analysis can be applied to estimate fracture density and scale, which provide important information for reservoir identification. This paper derives P-wave attenuation anisotropy in the ATI media where the symmetry axis is in the arbitrary direction theoretically and modifies the spectral ratio method to measure attenuation anisotropy in the ATI media, thus avoiding a large measurement error when applied to wide azimuth or full azimuth data. Fracture dip and azimuth can be estimated through attenuation anisotropy analysis. For small-scale fractures, fracture scale and fracture density can be determined with enhanced convergence if velocity and attenuation information are both used. We also apply the modified spectralratio method to microseismic field data from an oilfield in East China and extract the fracture dip through attenuation anisotropy analysis. The result agrees with the microseismie monitoring. 展开更多

The accurate estimation of fracture geometry parameters and the characterization of rock mass structure are two important topics in the geological disposal system of high-level radioactive waste(HLW).The Beishan area,as the current preselected area for China’s HLW disposal, has three subareas considered to be the key survey area at the stage of site selection. In this paper,a comprehensive survey method conducted on the outcrop is developed to estimate fracture geometry parameters. Results show that fracture occurrence obeys a Fisher distribution, fracture trace length obeys a normal distribution, and the distribution of spacing obeys a negative exponential distribution. An evaluation index,Rock Mass Structure Rating(RMSR),is proposed to characterize rock mass structure for the three subareas. The results show that the Xinchang area is more suitable to act as China’s HLW disposal repository site.At the same time, the index can also be applied to characterize surface rock mass structure and rock mass integrity at the site selection phase of HLW disposal. 展开更多

Fracture parameters of welded joints with different strength matching and crack depth in weld metal are investigated by using the methods of elastoplastic finite element analysis and three point bend specimen test. The results show that for shallow crack, the plastic zone turns large in loading process, and the fracture toughness turns high. The extent of the plastic zone of overmatched joint is larger than that of undermatched joint because it will extends to parent metal from the weld metal in loading process for the same CTOD value. The plastic zone of undermatched joint is restricted within the weld, and the size of that is small. Overmatched joint shows the fracture behaviour of shallow crack may more easily than the undermatched joint, while the two sorts of joint specimens have the same crack depth. Therefore, the fracture-resistant capability of overmatched weld is better than that of undermatched weld. when the toughness of weld metals is similar for both overmatched and undermatched joints. 展开更多

Furthermore, by applying double-K fracture theory, KiniⅠC,KunⅠC, as well as the critical effective crack length and the critical crack tip opening displacement, were evaluated. Based on the double-K fracture parameters above, the calculation model of equivalent strength for induced crack was established, thus the calculation method on its initiation, stable propagation and unstable fracture was ascertained. Moreover, the finite element simulation analysis of stress field in ShaPai arch dam and the on-site observational splaying points of induced crack at different altitudes validated the reliability of the model. Finally, crack inducer′s optimal setting in RCC arch dam was studied. It improves the design level of induced crack in RCC arch dam and satisfies the necessity of engineering practice. 展开更多

The aperture of natural rock fractures significantly affects the deformation and strength properties of rock masses,as well as the hydrodynamic properties of fractured rock masses. The conventional measurement methods are inadequate for collecting data on high-steep rock slopes in complex mountainous regions. This study establishes a high-resolution three-dimensional model of a rock slope using unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV)multi-angle nap-of-the-object photogrammetry to obtain edge feature points of fractures.Fracture opening morphology is characterized using coordinate projection and transformation.Fracture central axis is determined using vertical measuring lines, allowing for the interpretation of aperture of adaptive fracture shape. The feasibility and reliability of the new method are verified at a construction site of a railway in southeast Tibet,China. The study shows that the fracture aperture has a significant interval effect and size effect. The optimal sampling length for fractures is approximately 0.5e1 m,and the optimal aperture interpretation results can be achieved when the measuring line spacing is 1%of the sampling length.Tensile fractures in the study area generally have larger apertures than shear fractures, and their tendency to increase with slope height is also greater than that of shear fractures. The aperture of tensile fractures is generally positively correlated with their trace length, while the correlation between the aperture of shear fractures and their trace length appears to be weak.Fractures of different orientations exhibit certain differences in their distribution of aperture, but generally follow the forms of normal,log-normal,and gamma distributions. This study provides essential data support for rock and slope stability evaluation, which is of significant practical importance. 展开更多

The oil production of the multi-fractured horizontal wells(MFHWs) declines quickly in unconventional oil reservoirs due to the fast depletion of natural energy. Gas injection has been acknowledged as an effective method to improve oil recovery factor from unconventional oil reservoirs. Hydrocarbon gas huff-n-puff becomes preferable when the CO_(2) source is limited. However, the impact of complex fracture networks and well interference on the EOR performance of multiple MFHWs is still unclear. The optimal gas huff-n-puff parameters are significant for enhancing oil recovery. This work aims to optimize the hydrocarbon gas injection and production parameters for multiple MFHWs with complex fracture networks in unconventional oil reservoirs. Firstly, the numerical model based on unstructured grids is developed to characterize the complex fracture networks and capture the dynamic fracture features.Secondly, the PVT phase behavior simulation was carried out to provide the fluid model for numerical simulation. Thirdly, the optimal parameters for hydrocarbon gas huff-n-puff were obtained. Finally, the dominant factors of hydrocarbon gas huff-n-puff under complex fracture networks are obtained by fuzzy mathematical method. Results reveal that the current pressure of hydrocarbon gas injection can achieve miscible displacement. The optimal injection and production parameters are obtained by single-factor analysis to analyze the effect of individual parameter. Gas injection time is the dominant factor of hydrocarbon gas huff-n-puff in unconventional oil reservoirs with complex fracture networks. This work can offer engineers guidance for hydrocarbon gas huff-n-puff of multiple MFHWs considering the complex fracture networks. 展开更多

Pressure buildup testing can be used to analyze fracture network characteristics and conduct quantitative interpretation of relevant parameters for shale gas wells, thus providing bases for assessing the well productivity and formulating proper development strategies. This study establishes a new well test interpretation model for fractured horizontal wells based on seepage mechanisms of shale reservoirs and proposes a method for identifying fracturing patterns based on the characteristic slopes of pressure buildup curves and curve combination patterns. The pressure buildup curve patterns are identified to represent three types of shale reservoirs in the Sichuan Basin, namely the moderately deep shale reservoirs with high pressure, deep shale reservoirs with ultra-high pressure, and moderately deep shale reservoirs with normal pressure.Based on this, the relationship between the typical pressure buildup curve patterns and the fracture network types are put forward.Fracturing effects of three types of shale gas reservoir are compared and analyzed. The results show that typical flow patterns of shale reservoirs include bilinear flow in primary and secondary fractures, linear flow in secondary fractures, bilinear flow in secondary fractures and matrix, and linear flow in matrix. The fracture network characteristics can be determined using the characteristic slopes of pressure buildup curves and curve combinations. The linear flow in early secondary fractures is increasingly distinct with an increase in primary fracture conductivity. Moreover, the bilinear flow in secondary fractures and matrix and the subsequent linear flow in the matrix occur as the propping and density of secondary fractures increase. The increase in the burial depth,in-situ stress, and stress difference corresponds to a decrease in the propping of primary fractures that expand along different directions in the shale gas wells in the Sichuan Basin.Four pressure buildup curve patterns exist in the Sichuan Basin and its periphery. The pattern of pressure buildup curves of shale reservoirs in the Yongchuan area can be described as 1/2/→1/4,indicating limited stimulated reservoir volume, poorly propped secondary fractures, and the forming of primary fractures that extend only to certain directions. The pressure buildup curves of shale reservoirs in the main block of the Fuling area show a pattern of 1/4/→1/2 or 1/2,indicating greater stimulated reservoir volume, well propped secondary fractures, and the forming of complex fracture networks. The pattern of pressure buildup curves of shale reservoirs in the Pingqiao area is 1/2/→1/4→/1/2,indicating a fracturing effect somewhere between that of the Fuling and Yongchuan areas. For reservoirs with normal pressure,it is difficult to determine fracture network characteristics from pressure buildup curves due to insufficient formation energy and limited liquid drainage. 展开更多

An open-source MATLAB application(app)named Discontinuity Intensity Calculator and Estimator(DICE)was developed in order to quantitatively characterize the fractures,or in more general, discontinuities within a rocky outcrop in three-dimensional(3D)digital data, such as digital outcrop model(DOM).The workflow proposed for the parametrization of the discontinuities consists of the following steps:(1)Analysis and mapping of the fractures detected within the 3D DOMs;(2)Calculation of the orientation, position and dimensions of discontinuities that are represented by best-fit circular planes;(3)Determining the discontinuity parameters(dimension, distribution, spacing and intensity)by the DICE algorithm using different 3D oriented sampling techniques(3D oriented scanline,3D oriented circular scan window and spherical scan volume).Different sampling methods were bench tested with a synthetic,as well as a natural case study, and compared in order to understand the advantages and limitations of each technique. The 3D oriented circular scan window appears to be the most effective method for fracture intensity estimation with high accuracy(error 0.4%)and stability with variations in scan radius. 展开更多

HoekeBrown failure criterion is one of the widely used rock strength criteria in rock mechanics and mining engineering.Based on the theoretical expression of HoekeBrown parameter m of an intact rock, the parameter m has been modified by crack parameters for fractured rocks. In this paper, the theoretical value range and theoretical expression form of the parameter m in HoekeBrown failure criterion were discussed.A critical crack parameter B was defined to describe the influence of the critical crack when the stress was at the peak, while a parameter b was introduced to represent the distribution of the average initial fractures. The parameter m of a fractured rock contained the influences of critical crack(B),confining pressure(s3)and initial fractures(b).Then the triaxial test on naturally fractured limestones was conducted to verify the modification of the parameter m.From the ultrasonic test and loading test results of limestones, the parameter m can be obtained, which indicated that the confining pressure at a high level reduced the differences of m among all the specimens. The confining pressure s3 had an exponential impact on m,while the critical crack parameter B had a negative correlation with m.Then the expression of m for a naturally fractured limestone was also proposed. 展开更多

This paper establishes a 3D multi-well pad fracturing numerical model coupled with fracture propagation and proppant migration based on the displacement discontinuity method and Eulerian-Eulerian frameworks, and the fracture propagation and proppant distribution during multi-well fracturing are investigated by taking the actual multi-well pad parameters as an example.Fracture initiation and propagation during multi-well pad fracturing are jointly affected by a variety of stress interference mechanisms such as inter-cluster,inter-stage,and inter-well,and the fracture extension is unbalanced among clusters, asymmetric on both wings, and dipping at heels.Due to the significant influence of fracture morphology and width on the migration capacity of proppant in the fracture, proppant is mainly placed in the area near the wellbore with large fracture width, while a high-concentration sandwash may easily occur in the area with narrow fracture width as a result of quick bridging. On the whole, the proppant placement range is limited.Increasing the well-spacing can reduce the stress interference of adjacent wells and promote the uniform distribution of fractures and proppant on both wings. The maximum stimulated reservoir volume or multi-fracture uniform propagation can be achieved by optimizing the well spacing.Although reducing the perforation-cluster spacing also can improve the stimulated reservoir area,a too low cluster spacing is not conducive to effectively increasing the propped fracture area.Since increasing the stage time lag is beneficial to reduce inter-stage stress interference, zipper fracturing produces more uniform fracture propagation and proppant distribution. 展开更多

CO_(2) dry fracturing is a promising alternative method to water fracturing in tight gas reservoirs, especially in water-scarce areas such as the Loess Plateau. The CO_(2) flowback efficiency is a critical factor that affects the final gas production effect. However, there have been few studies focusing on the flowback characteristics after CO_(2) dry fracturing. In this study,an extensive core-to-field scale study was conducted to investigate CO_(2) flowback characteristics and CH_(4) production behavior.Firstly,to investigate the impact of core properties and production conditions on CO_(2) flowback,a series of laboratory experiments at the core scale were conducted. Then, the key factors affecting the flowback were analyzed using the grey correlation method based on field data. Finally, taking the construction parameters of Well S60 as an example,a dual-permeability model was used to characterize the different seepage fields in the matrix and fracture for tight gas reservoirs. The production parameters after CO_(2) dry fracturing were then optimized.Experimental results demonstrate that CO_(2) dry fracturing is more effective than slickwater fracturing, with a 9.2%increase in CH_(4) recovery. The increase in core permeability plays a positive role in improving CH_(4) production and CO_(2) flowback. The soaking process is mainly affected by CO_(2) diffusion, and the soaking time should be controlled within 12 h.Increasing the flowback pressure gradient results in a significant increase in both CH_(4) recovery and CO_(2) flowback efficiency. While,an increase in CO_(2) injection is not conducive to CH_(4) production and CO_(2) flowback.Based on the experimental and field data, the important factors affecting flowback and production were comprehensively and effectively discussed. The results show that permeability is the most important factor, followed by porosity and effective thickness.Considering flowback efficiency and the influence of proppant reflux, the injection volume should be the minimum volume that meets the requirements for generating fractures. The soaking time should be short which is 1 day in this study, and the optimal bottom hole flowback pressure should be set at 10 MPa.This study aims to improve the understanding of CO_(2) dry fracturing in tight gas reservoirs and provide valuable insights for optimizing the process parameters. 展开更多

To deal with the stress interference caused by simultaneous propagation of multiple fractures and the wettability reversal and physical property changes of the reservoir caused by fracturing fluid getting in during large-volume fracturing of tight oil reservoirs through a horizontal well, a non-planar 3D fracture growth model was built, wettability reversal characterizing parameters and change of relative permeability curve were introduced to correct the production prediction model of fractured horizontal well, a fracturing design optimization software(Fr Smart) by integrating geological and engineering data was developed, and a fracturing design optimization approach for tight oil reservoirs based on fracture control was worked out. The adaptability of the method was analyzed and the fracture parameters of horizontal wells in tight oil reservoirs were optimized. The simulation results show that fracturing technology based on fracture control is suitable for tight oil reservoirs, and by optimizing fracture parameters, this technology makes it possible to produce the maximum amount of reserves in the well-controlled unit of unconventional reservoirs. The key points of fracturing design optimization based on fracture control include increasing lateral length of and reducing the row spacing between horizontal wells, increasing perforation clusters in one stage to decrease the spacing of neighboring fractures, and also avoiding interference of old and new fracturing wells. Field tests show that this technology can increase single well production and ultimate recovery. Using this technology in developing unconventional resources such as tight oil reservoirs in China will enhance the economics significantly. 展开更多

Since its introduction, discontinuous deformation analysis(DDA)has been widely used in different areas of rock mechanics.By dividing large blocks into subblocks and introducing artificial joints,DDA can be applied to rock fracture simulation. However, parameter calibration,a fundamental issue in discontinuum methods, has not received enough attention in DDA.In this study, the parameter calibration of DDA for intact rock is carefully studied. To this end,a subblock DDA with Voronoi tessellation is presented first. Then,a modified contact constitutive law is introduced,in which the tensile and shear meso-strengths are modified to be independent of the bond lengths. This improvement can prevent the unjustified preferential failure of short edges.A method for imposing confining pressure is also introduced.Thereafter, sensitivity analysis is performed to investigate the influence of the calculated parameters and meso-parameters on the mechanical properties of modeled rock.Based on the sensitivity analysis,a unified calibration procedure is suggested for both cases with and without confining pressure. Finally, the calibration procedure is applied to two examples, including a biaxial compression test. The results show that the proposed Voronoi-based DDA can simulate rock fracture with and without confining pressure very well after careful parameter calibration. 展开更多

This paper develops a model that only requires two sets of small-size rock specimens with the ratio of the structural geometry parameter maximum to minimum ae,max:ae,min≥3:1 to determine the rock fracture and strength parameters without size effect and predict the actual structural performance of rock.Regardless of three-point-bending,four-point-bending,or a combination of the above two specimen types, fracture toughness KICand tensile strength ftof rock were determined using only two sets of specimens with ae,max:ae,min≥3:1.The values KICand ftwere consistent with those determined using multiple sets of specimens. The full structural failure curve constructed by two sets of small-size specimens with ae,max:ae,min≥3:1 can accurately predict large-size specimens fracture failure,and±10%upper and lower limits of the curve can encompass the test results of large-size specimens. The peak load prediction curve was constructed by two sets of specimens with ae,max:ae,min≥3:1,and±15%upper and lower limits of the peak load prediction curve can cover the small-size specimen tests data. The model and method proposed in this paper require only two sets of small-size specimens, and their selection is unaffected by the specimen type, geometry, and initial crack length. 展开更多
