Probabilistic Load Flow Algorithm with the Power Performance of Double-Fed Induction Generators

Probabilistic load flow(PLF)algorithm has been regained attention,because the large-scale wind power integration into the grid has increased the uncertainty of the stable and safe operation of the power system.The PLF algorithm is improved with introducing the power performance of double-fed induction generators(DFIGs)for wind turbines(WTs)under the constant power factor control and the constant voltage control in this paper.Firstly,the conventional Jacobian matrix of the alternating current(AC)load flow model is modified,and the probability distributions of the active and reactive powers of the DFIGs are derived by combining the power performance of the DFIGs and the Weibull distribution of wind speed.Then,the cumulants of the state variables in power grid are obtained by improved PLF model and more accurate power probability distributions.In order to generate the probability density function(PDF)of the nodal voltage,Gram-Charlier,Edgeworth and Cornish-Fisher expansions based on the cumulants are applied.Finally,the effectiveness and accuracy of the improved PLF algorithm is demonstrated in the IEEE 14-RTS system with wind power integration,compared with the results of Monte Carlo(MC)simulation using deterministic load flow calculation. 展开更多

An analytic electromagnetic calculation method for doubly fed induction generator(DFIG) in wind turbine system was presented. Based on the operation principles, steady state equivalent circuit and basic equations of DFIG, the modeling for electromagnetic calculation of DFIG was proposed. The electromagnetic calculation of DFIG was divided into three steps: the magnetic flux calculation, parameters derivation and performance checks. For each step, the detailed numeric calculation formulas were all derived. Combining the calculation formulas, the whole electromagnetic calculation procedure was established, which consisted of three iterative calculation loops, including magnetic saturation coefficient, electromotive force and total output power. All of the electromagnetic and performance data of DIFG can be calculated conveniently by the established calculation procedure, which can be used to evaluate the new designed machine. A 1.5 MW DFIG designed by the proposed procedure was built, for which the whole type tests including no-load test, load test and temperature rising test were carried out. The test results have shown that the DFIG satisfies technical requirements and the test data fit well with the calculation results which prove the correctness of the presented calculation method. 展开更多

To save on the island area's power supply cost and protect the clean environment, the Isolated MicroGrid is being duly considered. Consisting of the Wind Turbine Generator (WT), photovoltaic generator, battery system, back-up diesel generator, etc., Isolated MicroGrid, which usually uses the inverter to maintain voltage and frequency of the system, is very weak in terms of voltage and frequency stability compared to the large-scale electrical power system. If wind turbine generator is applied to this weak power system, it could experience many problems in terms of maintaining its voltage and frequency. In this paper, the measurement result of voltage and frequency is presented for MicroGrid, which consists of the Wind Turbine Generator adopting the induction generator and the battery system. MicroGrid’s voltage waveform distortion and Wind Turbine Generator’s output oscillation problems are analyzed using PSCAD/EMTDC. Based on the analyzed result, the importance of type and capacity choice has been suggested in case the Wind Turbine Generator is applied to the Isolated MicroGrid. 展开更多

A sensorless vector-control strategy for an induction generator in a grid-connected wind energy conversion system is presented. The sensorless control system is based on a model reference adaptive system (MRAS) to estimate the rotational speed. In order to tune the MRAS observer and compensate for the parameter variation and uncertainties, a separate estimation of the speed is obtained from the rotor slot harmonics using an algorithm for spectral analysis. This algorithm can track fast dynamic changes in the rotational speed, with high accuracy. Two back to back pulse width modulated (PWM) inverters are used to interface the induction generator with the grid. The front-end converter is also vector controlled. The dc link voltage is regulated using a PI fuzzy controller. The proposed sensorless control strategy has been experimentally verified on a 2.5-kW experimentally set up with an induction generator driven by a wind turbine emulator. The emulation of the wind turbine is performed using a novel strategy that allows the emulation of high-order wind turbine models, preserving all of the dynamic characteristics. The experimental results show the high level of performance obtained with the proposed sensorless vector-control method. 展开更多

An application example of a 12-phase self-excited induction generator (SEIG) was provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the presented approach. We propose in this paper a new soft starting of squirrel cage induction generator based wind turbine connected to the grid. Our strategy overcomes such transient instability problems and pinpoints rapidly synchronous speed regardless the wind speed acting on pitch angle. The proposed strategy ensures at least 50% reduction of inrush current and 18% gain of WTG starting time. A state model of the system is given including the wind turbine model and the SCIG model in the synchronous reference frame. Simulation results are analysed and compared to the classic coupling procedure. 展开更多

In this paper, we present the steady state analysis of a double-fed induction generator (DFIG) adopted for wind power generation. The three-phase induction machine connected to the network, to work as a generator for wind farms, is excited on the rotor circuit by a slip-frequency current injected to the rotor, from an exciter mounted on the same shaft of the machine. The resulting rotating magnetic field rotates at synchronous speed;as such the generated power has a constant frequency independent of the shaft speed. Effects of the excitation voltage magnitude and phase angle on the active and reactive power are studied, when the machine runs at constant speed. It has been shown that by controlling the excitation voltage magnitude and phase angle would control the mode of operation of the machine;motor mode or generator mode. Furthermore, the effects of the shaft speed on the active and reactive power at constant excitation voltage magnitude and constant phase angle are also investigated. 展开更多

During the isolated use of a wind system, the output voltage of the self-excited induction generator depends on the variation characteristic of its parameters: the excitation condensers, the drive speed and the load. Therefore, the regulation of the tension appears to be of great interest. We focused on the use of an analogical regulator of tension, with the aim of controlling the tension at the exit of the self-excited induction generator. So we modelled, implanted and simulated a wind system (Self-excited induction generator, converters (AC/DC, DC/DC) and load it) in the Orcad/Pspice environment. In the first time the behaviour of the asynchronous generator was analyzed when the load, the excitation capacitor and the drive speed vary in the absence of any form of regulation. This analysis was conducted with the aim of defining the limits of the machine exploitation. In the second time the functioning mode is controlled by an analogical control of tension. The results of simulation show the good performances of the system during the application of the proposed voltage regulator. 展开更多

The dynamic performance of doubly-fed induction generator(DFIG) before and after connection is analyzed based on corresponding mathematical models and transfer functions in decoupled vector control.The parameter tuning methods of rotor current regulator before and after connection are given.To reach same dynamic performance the parameters should take different values and be switched before and after connection.However on one hand the closing moment of stator contactor is difficult to get as the feedback signal is usually twenty millisecond delay or so.The delay in parameter switching will affect rotor current and torque dynamics during the delayed period after connection. On the other hand parameter switching is troublesome.Hence a synchronization control strategy without parameter switching is proposed and analyzed in detail,which has linear rising exciting current to avoid current overshooting. The dynamic performance of the proposed strategy is analyzed in frequency domain and implemented on a DFIG experimental platform subsequently.The proposed synchronization strategy is validated by experimental results. 展开更多

In multi-fed grid-connected systems,there are complex dynamic interactions between different pieces of equipment.Particularly in situations of weak-grid faults,the dynamic coupling between equipment becomes more pronounced.This may cause the system to experience small-signal instability during the fault steady-state.In this paper,multi-paralleled doubly fed induction generator(DFIG)-based wind farms(WFs)are taken as an example to study the dynamic coupling within a multi-fed system during fault steady-state of symmetrical low voltage ride-through(LVRT)in a weak grid.The analysis reveals that the dynamic coupling between WFs will introduce a damping shift to each WF.This inevitably affects the system’s dynamic stability and brings the risk of small-signal instability during fault steady-state in LVRT scenarios.Increasing the distance to fault location and fault severity will exacerbate the dynamic coupling between WFs.Because of the dynamic coupling,adjusting the control state of one WF will affect the stability of the remaining WFs in the system.Hence,a cooperative control strategy for multi-paralleled DFIG WFs is proposed to improve dynamic stability during LVRT.The analysis and the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy are verified by modal analysis and simu-lation. 展开更多

In this paper, a comparative performance of fixed and variable speed wind generators with Pitch angle control has been presented. The first is based on a squirrel cage Induction Generator (IG) of 315 kW rated power, connected directly to the grid. The second incorporated a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) of 750 kW rated power. The performances of each studied wind generator are evaluated by simulation works and variable speed operation is highlighted as preferred mode of operation. 展开更多

To analyze the factors which affecting transient stability of power system, the dynamic model of doubly-fed induction generator and direct-drive PM synchronous generator has been built using PSCAD. Impact of different wind farm integration on grid typically in China has been presented. The influence of the variations of transient reactance, negative sequence reactance and rotary inertia on critical clearing time of power system transient stability is analyzed by time-domain simulation. Mixture operation of DFIG and PMSG to optimize the stability of system has been analyzed firstly. The digital simulation results show that doubly-fed induction wind turbines is a better choice to meet the requirement of system instability due to large wind farm integration in comparison with direct-drive PM synchronous wind turbines. With a rather large rotary inertia, the proper ratio of direct-drive PM synchronous wind turbines used in wind farm could be comprehensive planning by optimized the stability of system. Analysis of this paper should be provided as academic reference for improving design of wind farm system. 展开更多

Simulation test cases using MATLAB-Simulink are implemented on a 365-MW wind farm in AL-Zaafarana, Egypt. The simulation results show the influence of the FRT capability on the protective relaying coordination in wind farms, showing that the FRT may work in situations where is were expected not to work, and then disabling the over-current protection, which should have worked in this situation. 展开更多

This paper presents a new Long-range generalized predictive controller in the synchronous reference frame for a wind energy system doubly-fed induction generator based. This controller uses the state space equations that consider the rotor current and voltage as state and control variables, to execute the predictive control action. Therefore, the model of the plant must be transformed into two discrete transference functions, by means of an auto-regressive moving average model, in order to attain a discrete and decoupled controller, which makes it possible to treat it as two independent single-input single-output systems instead of a magnetic coupled multiple-input multiple-output system. For achieving that, a direct power control strategy is used, based on the past and future rotor currents and voltages estimation. The algorithm evaluates the rotor current predictors for a defined prediction horizon and computes the new rotor voltages that must be injected to controlling the stator active and reactive powers. To evaluate the controller performance, some simulations were made using Matlab/Simulink. Experimental tests were carried out with a small-scale prototype assuming normal operating conditions with constant and variable wind speed profiles. Finally, some conclusions respect to the dynamic performance of this new controller are summarized. 展开更多

A high efficiency Switched Reluctance Generator (SRG) based high frequency switching scheme to enhance the output for grid connectivity is designed, fabricated and evaluated. This proposed method generates the output for the low wind speed. It provides output at low speed because of multi-level DC-DC converter and storage system. The prominence of Renewable Energy Sources(RES)in the process of power generation is exponentially increased in the recent days since these sources assist in minimizing the environmental contamination.A grid-tied DFIG(Doubly Fed Induction Generator)based WECS(Wind Energy Conversion System)is introduced in this work,in which a Landsman converter is implemented to impro-vise the output voltage of PV without anyfluctuations.A novel GA(Genetic Algorithm)assisted ANN(Artificial Neural Network)is employed for tracking the Maximum power from PV.Among the rotor and grid side controllers,the for-mer is implemented by combining the statorflux with d-q reference frame and the latter is realized by the PI controller.The proposed approach delivers better per-formance in the compensation of real and reactive power along with the DC link voltage control.The controlling mechanism is verified in both MATLAB and experimental bench setupby using an emulated wind turbine for the concurrent control of DC link potential,active and reactive powers.The source current THD is observed as 1.93%and 2.4%for simulation and hardware implementation respectively. 展开更多
