Methods: A total of 53 urban fourth grade children were divided into two groups, with one group playing DDR and the other group engaged in aerobic dance. After 15 min, the groups switched activities and continued their respective activities for another 15 min. Participants wore NL- 1000 pedometers in four consecutive sessions, and responded to a questionnaire measuring their self-efficacy and enjoyment toward two dance activities at the end of the first session. Results: Children spent more moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) time (p 〈 0.01, 72 = 0.49) in aerobic dance than DDR. Additionally, children reported significantly higher self-efficacy (p 〈 0.001, 72 = 0.28) and enjoyment (p 〈 0.01, η2 = 0.18) in DDR than in aerobic dance. Conclusion: Health care professionals and educators may not replace the traditional PAs and sports with interactive video games, but may use exergaming as an excellent addition to promote PA. The empty-nest family pattern has become predominant among the aging people, and they are more vulnerable to the development of cognitive disorders. However, there is no standardized service in the community nursing care that includes procedures on how to improve the cognitive function of the elderly. Meanwhile, the booming number of empty-nest elderly stimulates the community nurses to assume the responsibility for their care. All of these bring more difficulties and opportunities for community nurses who are dedicated to the prevention of geriatric cognitive disorders. Methods: The authors reviewed the literature related to "empty-nest elderly", "cognitive function","mahjong",and "Chinese square dance" in the Elsevier, Web of Science(WOS), China National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI), Springer and PubMed databases. The study illustrates the utility possibility of an efficient and straightforward method for improving the cognitive function among the elderly in the context of community nursing care in China and even in the rest of the world. Results: Mental and physical activity contributes to cognitive fitness and may be beneficial in delaying cognitive decline. Mental activities, such as playing mahjong, and physical activities, such as the Chinese square dance, are common Chinese activities. Both of them can affect cognitive function in some way. Conclusions: China is experiencing one of its most severe aging problems. Community health personnel and related professionals may consider using mahjong and Chinese square dance to promote psychological health in empty-nest elderly individuals in the community.展开更多

OBJECTIVE: Comparing the brainstem auditory evoked potential of students studying folk dance to students studying other subjects. DESIGN: Observational contrast study. SETTING: Physical Education College, Shandong Normal University PARTICIPANTS: Fifty-five female students were enrolled at Shandong Normal University between September and December in 2005, including 21 students that studied folk dance and 34 students that studied other subjects. The age of the folk dance students averaged (19 ± 1) years and dance training length was (6.0 ± 1.5) years. The students that studied other subjects had never taken part in dance training or other physical training, and their age averaged (22 ± 1) years, body height averaged (162 ± 5) cm, body mass averaged (51 ± 6) kg. All subjects had no prior ear disease or history of other neurological disorders. All students provided informed consent for the experimental project. METHODS: The neural electricity tester, NDI-200 (Shanghai Poseidon Medical Electronic Instrument Factory) was used to examine and record Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potential values of the subjects during silence, as well as to transversally analyze the Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potential values. The electrode positions were cleaned and degreased with soapy water, followed by ethanol. The selected bipolar electrodes were situated on the head: recording electrodes were placed at the Baihui acupoint, and the reference electrode was placed at the mastoid of the measured ear, with grounding electrodes in the center of the forehead. Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potential values were elicited by monaural stimulation of a "click" though an earphone; the other ear was sheltered by the white noise. The click intensity was 102 db, the stimulation frequency was 30 Hz, the bandpass filters were 1 000-3 000 Hz, the sensitivity was 5 ta V, and a total of 2 000 sweeps were averaged. Waveform identification and analysis: various components of the Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potential values were identified, and the peak latencies and peak-peak values were analyzed. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Latency of Ⅰ , Ⅱ, Ⅲ, Ⅳ, Ⅴ and Peak-Peak Value of Ⅰ, Ⅲ, Ⅴwere measured. RESULTS: Fifty-five subjects were enrolled in the final analysis, without any loss. Compared to the students who studied other subjects ① Ⅰ -Ⅴ peak latencies (PL): Ⅳ PL of the right ear of the folk dance students was obviously longer (P 〈 0.05); ② Ⅰ, Ⅲ, V peak-peak values:Ⅰ peak-peak values of the right ear were obviously higher (P 〈 0.05). CONCUSION: ① PL of the right ear of the folk dance students was obviously longer, which indicates that dancing results in a stronger sensibility to auditory stimuli. ②. Peak-peak values were obviously higher, which indicates that long-term exercise enhances the music senses and synchrony of auditory nerve impulses.展开更多

The purpose of this study was to simultaneously assess the physiological responses and psychological experiences during salsa dance and Zumba fitness in a community sample of physically inactive women. Methods: Twenty-four participants, aged 22-56 years, visited the laboratory to perform a graded exercise test for determination of maximal oxygen uptake and maximal heart rate. The participants then attended 2 partnered salsa dance and 2 non-partnered Zumba fitness classes each in a counterbalanced order over a 2-week period. The 1-h classes were taught by certified instructors in established venues in the Royal Borough of Kingston and the surrounding communities of London, UK. Physiological data were collected using a wrist-worn ActiGraph wGT3X+ acceler- ometer with accompanying heart rate monitor and were processed using previously validated dance-specific techniques. Psychological experiences were measured via the Subjective Exercise Experiences Scale. Results: There was a significantly higher (p 〈 0.001) total time spent in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (51.2± 3.1 vs. 32.6 ±5.9 min), total energy expenditure (411±66 vs. 210 ± 46 kcal), and total step count (6773 ± 556 vs. 4108 ±781 steps) during Zumba fitness when compared to salsa dance. Significant pre- to post-class improvements in positive well-being (p 〈 0.01, partial 7/2 = 0.4l) and psychological distress (p 〈 0.001, partial 02 = 0.72) were simultaneously observed for both salsa dance and Zumba fitness. Conclusion: The acute responses to classes of partnered Latin dance and non-partnered Latin-themed aerobic dance suggest that in physically inactive women participation is indeed efficacious in terms of community-based physical activity and psychosocial health promotion.展开更多
