In this study, the dynamic stress concentration factors(DSCF)around a straight-wall arch tunnel(SWAT)were solved analytically utilizing the complex variable function methods and Duhamel’s integral. The effects of wavelength, incident angle, and blasting rising time on the DSCF distribution were analyzed.Theoretical results pointed out dynamic disturbances resulting in compressive stress concentration in the vertical direction and tensile stress in the incident direction. As the wavelength and rising time increased, there was a tendency for the amplitude of stress concentration to initially rise and then converge. Moreover,a series of 3D FEM models were established to evaluate the effect of different initial stress states on the dynamic failure of the tunnel surrounding rock. The results indicated that the failure of the surrounding rock was significantly influenced by the direction of the static maximum principal stress and the direction of the dynamic disturbance.Under the coupling of static and blasting loading, damage around the tunnel was more prone to occur in the dynamic and static stress concentration coincidence zone. Finally, the damage modes of rock tunnel under static stress and blasting disturbance from different directions were summarized and a proposed support system was presented. The results reveal the mechanisms of deep-buried rock tunnel destruction and dynamically triggered rockburst. 展开更多

The Submerged Floating Tunnel(SFT)relies on a tensioned mooring system for precise positioning. The sudden breakage of a single cable can trigger an immediate alteration in the constraint conditions of the tube, inducing a transient heave response within the structure along with a transient increase in cable tension experienced by adjacent cables. In more severe cases, this may even lead to a progressive failure culminating in the global destruction of the SFT.This study used ANSYS/AQWA to establish a numerical model of the entire length SFT for the hydrodynamic response analysis, and conducted a coupled calculation of the dynamic responses of the SFT-mooring line model based on Orca Flex to study the global dynamic responses of the SFT at the moment of cable breakage and the redistribution of cable internal forces. The most unfavorable position for SFT cable breakage was identified, the influence mechanism of cable breakage at different positions on the global dynamic response was revealed, and the progressive chain failure pattern caused by localized cable breakage are also clarified. 展开更多

To study the dynamic mechanical properties and failure characteristics of intersecting jointed rock masses with different joint distributions under confining pressure, considering the cross angleαand joint persistence ratioη,a numerical model of the biaxial Hopkinson bar test system was established using the finite element method–discrete-element model coupling method. The validity of the model was verified by comparing and analyzing it in conjunction with laboratory test results.Dynamics-static combined impact tests were conducted on specimens under various conditions to investigate the strength characteristics and patterns of crack initiation and expansion. The study revealed the predominant factors influencing intersecting joints with different angles and penetrations under impact loading. The results show that the peak stress of the specimens decreases first and then increases with the increase of the cross angle.Whenα<60°,regardless of the value ofη,the dynamic stress of the specimens is controlled by the main joint.Whenα≥60°,the peak stress borne by the specimens decreases with increasingη.Whenα<60°,the initiation and propagation of cracks in the cross-jointed specimens are mainly controlled by the main joint, and the final failure surface of the specimens is composed of the main joint and wing cracks.Whenα≥60°orη≥0.67,the secondary joint guides the expansion of the wing cracks, and multiple failure surfaces composed of main and secondary joints, wing cracks, and co-planar cracks are formed.Increasing lateral confinement significantly increases the dynamic peak stress able to be borne by the specimens.Under triaxial conditions, the degree of failure of the intersecting jointed specimens is much lower than that under uniaxial and biaxial conditions. 展开更多

In order to investigate the micro-process and inner mechanism of rock failure under impact loading, the laboratory tests were carried out on an improved split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) system with synchronized measurement devices including a high-speed camera and a dynamic strain meter. The experimental results show that the specimens were in the state of good stress equilibrium during the post failure stage even when visible cracks were forming in the specimens. Rock specimens broke into strips but still could bear the external stress and keep force balance. Meanwhile, numerical tests with particle flow code (PFC) revealed that the failure process of rocks can be described by the evolution of micro-fractures. Shear cracks emerged firstly and stopped developing when the external stress was not high enough. Tensile cracks, however, emerged when the rock specimen reached its peak strength and played an important role in controlling the ultimate failure during the post failure stage. 展开更多

Methods The deformation mode of spherical shells was given by introducing isometric transformation. The governing equation of motion of the rigid plastic spherical shell was given by energy balance. This equation was solved by using Runge Kutta method. Results The relationships between the impact force, dimple radius, central point deflection and time were obtained. The response time initial velocity, the maximal impact force permanent initial velocity, the central point deflection initial velocity and the dimple radius initial velocity characteristics were respectively plotted. Conclusion A comparison made between the theoretical results and the experimental ones indicates that the two groups of results are in conformity with each other. 展开更多

Dynamic failures, or ‘‘bumps", remain an imperative safety concern in underground coal mining, despite significant advancements in engineering controls. The presence of spatially discrete, stiff roof units are one feature that has been linked to these events. However, an empirical stratigraphic review indicates that no significant difference exists in the relative commonality of discrete units between bumping and non-bumping deposits. Instead an apparent relationship exists between reportable bumping and the overall stiffness of the host rock. However, this initial study is too simplistic to be conclusive; to weight the relative impact of changes in a single variable, such as the thickness or location of sandstone members, it must be examined in isolation—i.e., in a setting where all other variables are held constant.Numerical modelling provides this setting, and the effects of variability in a stiff discrete member in a hypothetical longwall mining scenario are investigated within the context of three stratigraphic ‘‘types",Compliant, Intermediate and Stiff. A modelling experiment examines changes in rupture potential in stiff roof units for each stratigraphic type as discrete unit thickness and location are manipulated through a range of values. Results suggest that the stiff-to-compliant ratio of the host rock has an impact on the relative stress-inducing effects of discrete stiff members. In other words, it is necessary to consider both the thickness and the distance to the seam, within the context of the host rock, to accurately anticipate areas of elevated rupture-induced hazard; acknowledging the presence of a discrete unit within the overburden in general terms is an insufficient indicator of risk. This finding helps to refine our understanding of the role of individual stiff, strong roof members in bumping phenomena, and suggests that a holistic view of overburden lithology and site-specific numerical modelling may be necessary to improve miner safety. 展开更多

Large and super-large section chamber groups in coal mines are frequently affected by dynamic loads resulting from production activities such as roadway driving and blasting. The stability of the surrounding rock is poor, and it is difficult to control. In this paper,a similar simulation test was used to study the deformation and evolution laws of the surrounding rock of a triangle-shaped chamber group under different dynamic loads. The results showed that under dynamic loading, the vertical stress of the surrounding rock of the chamber group increased in an oscillatory form. The maximum stress concentration coefficient reached 4.09.The damage degree of the roof was greater than that of the two sides. The deformation of the roof was approximately 1.2 times that of the two sides. For the chamber closer to the power source, the stress oscillation amplitude of the surrounding rock was larger, and the failure was more serious. The force of the anchorage structure showed a phased increasing characteristic;additionally, the force of the anchorage structure on the adjacent side of the chambers was greater than that on the other side. This study reveals the deformation and failure evolution laws of the surrounding rock of large section chamber groups under dynamic loading. 展开更多

The purpose of this study is to explore how the geochemical and petrographic components of coal may impact its physical properties and how these correlate with a history of reportable dynamic failure in coal mines.Dynamic failure events, also termed bumps, bounces,or bursts, are the explosive failures of rock in a mining environment. These events occur suddenly and often with no warning, resulting in worker injury up to and including fatality in greater than 60%of reportable cases through the Mine Safety and Health Administration(MSHA).A database of variables was compiled using publicly available datasets, which includes compositional geographic, strength, and Hardgrove grindability index(HGI)data. Results indicated that bumping coals were less mature, lower in carbon, higher in oxygen, softer, and less well cleated than coals that did not bump.High liptinite content was found to correlate with higher average uniaxial compressive strength(UCS)values. However,no clear and direct correlation between UCS and dynamic failure status was observed. The findings of this study established that differences existed between coals that had versus had not experienced reportable dynamic failure accidents. These differences were inherent to the coal itself and were independent of mining-induced risk factors. Results further illuminated how compositional attribute of coal influenced physical properties and began to clarify potential links between geochemistry and dynamic failure status.Only through the better understanding of risk can more effective mitigating strategies be enacted. 展开更多

To study the tensile strength and failure mechanisms of rock with hydro-thermal coupling damage under different loading rates,a series of static and dynamic splitting tests were conducted on thermally treated sandstone under dry and water-saturated conditions.Experimental results showed that high temperatures effectively weakened the tensile strength of sandstone specimens, and the P-wave velocity declined with increasing temperature.Overall, thermal damage of rock increased gradually with increasing temperature, but obvious negative damage appeared at the temperature of 100℃.The water-saturated sandstone specimens had lower indirect tensile strength than the dry ones, which indicated that water-rock interaction led to secondary damage in heat-treated rock.Under both dry and water-saturated conditions, the dynamic tensile strength of sandstone increased with the increase of strain rate. The water-saturated rock specimens showed stronger rate dependence than the dry ones, but the loading rate sensitivity of thermally treated rock decreased with increasing treatment temperature. With the help of scanning electron microscopy technology, the thermal fractures of rock, caused by extreme temperature, were analyzed.Hydro-physical mechanisms of sandstone under different loading rate conditions after heat treatment were further discussed. 展开更多

Considering the effect of viscosity-temperature relationship and cavitation of micro-scale film, the influencing factors on hydrodynamic lubrication performance of upstream pumping mechanical seal were investigated based on the theory of hydrodynamic lubrication.N-S equation, energy equation,viscosity-temperature equation and vapor transport equation were solved with the finite volume method by using Fluent software, which was performed to analyze the influence of the viscosity-temperature and cavitation effect on hydrodynamic lubrication failure of the film. The research demonstrates that it will lead to the significant difference of the temperature field by considering the coupling of temperature and viscosity. When the film thickness decreases and the rotating speed rises, cavitation regions and viscous friction heat increases, the opening force of the film is also enhanced. However, the growth rate is restricted to the cavitation regions and viscous friction heat, and the opening force begins to decline to a certain extent, and thereby being insufficient to open the surfaces of the seals and leading to the failure of automatic adjustment function and severe wear, lubrication failure occurrs.Through comprehensive research on the influences of viscosity-temperature and cavitation effect on hydrodynamic lubrication performance, the theories of failure and design of upstream pumping mechanical seal are further developed. 展开更多

The plastic deformation processes of magnesium alloys near a void at atomic scale level were examined through molecular dynamics(MD)simulation. The modified embedded atom method(MEAM)potentials were employed to characterize the interaction between atoms of the magnesium alloy specimen with only a void. The void growth and crystal failure processes for hexagonal close-packed(hcp)structure were observed. The calculating results reveal that the deformation mechanism near a void in magnesium alloy is a complex process. The passivation around the void, dislocation emission, and coalescence of the void and micro-cavities lead to rapid void growth. 展开更多

Investigations on the dynamic mechanical properties and failure mechanisms of coal under in-situ stress is essential for the prevention of dynamic disasters in deep coal mines. Thus,a modified true triaxial Hopkinson bar was employed to explore the dynamic mechanical behaviors of coal at different confining pressures(0–20 MPa)and strain rates(40–220 s^(-1)).The results show that the dynamic peak stress is positively correlated with lateral static pre-stressσy andσz,but negatively correlated with axial static prestressσx.At approximate strain rates, increasing the lateral static pre-stress facilitates increasing the dynamic peak stress, but the minimum lateral static pre-stress is the primary factor limiting a significant increase in dynamic peak stress of coal.Furthermore, the dynamic differential stress is linearly related to the logarithm of strain rate, and the peak strain varies linearly with strain rate. However, there is no significant correlation between confining pressure and peak strain.Moreover,X-ray CT images and photographic fracture observations of coal samples show the failure patterns under uniaxial and triaxial conditions are splitting failure and shear failure, respectively. The device provides a viable approach for fully comprehending the dynamic mechanical behaviors of rock-like material in complex stress conditions. 展开更多

By means of the improved split Hopkionson pressure bar(SHPB) with axial pre-pressure and confined pressure, two series of experiments on sandstone are carried out to research the failure mode of rock during the course of exploitation of resources in deep. One is under the conditions that the con-fining pressure is fixed and the axial pressure is changeable. The other is under the conditions that the confining pressure becomes and the axial pressure is fixed. It is found that samples break up evenly after impacting when axial static pressures are low, there is great disparity in size of fragments when axial static pressures are high, and the main bodies of samples after the tests under the combination of dy-namic and static loads frequently show the type of V or X. The samples are more close-grained at the elastic stage and impacts make many cracks be generated and developed, as makes samples more crackable. At the initial phase of damage stage, the static pressures make some cracks in the samples which are undeveloped and the impacts′ role is similar to that at the elastic stage. At the metaphase or anaphase of damage stage, these cracks in the samples develop adequately and the impacts mainly accelerate samples′ failure. The main bodies of samples show the type of V or X after impacting due to the confining pressures′ restraining samples′ lateral formation at the elastic stage or the initial phase of damage stage, the main bodies of samples have almost formed at the stage loading static pressures and the results after impacting usually are similar to those under the axial pressures tests. 展开更多

To investigate the influence of microwave heating on the dynamic behavior and failure mechanisms of rock, dynamic compression tests were conducted on microwave-irradiated sandstone specimens using a modified split Hopkinson pressure bar(SHPB)system.Experimental results show that microwave radiation can effectively weaken the compressive strength of sandstone.Rock specimens show three different failure modes under impact load:tensile failure, tensile−shear composite failure and compressive−shear failure. The dynamic Poisson’s ratio, calculated using the measured P-and S-wave velocities,is introduced to describe the deformation characteristics of sandstone. With the increase in microwave power and heating time, the Poisson’s ratio declines first and then increases slightly, and the turning point occurs at 244.6℃.Moreover,the microstructural characteristics reveal that microwave radiation produces dehydration, pore expansion, and cracking of the rock. The damage mechanisms caused by microwave radiation are discussed based on thermal stress and steam pressure inside the rock, which provides a reasonable explanation for the experimental results. 展开更多

In order to resolve grid distortions in finite element method(FEM), the meshless numerical method which is called general particle dynamics(GPD) was presented to simulate the large deformation and failure of geomaterials. The Mohr-Coulomb strength criterion was implemented into the code to describe the elasto-brittle behaviours of geomaterials while the solid-structure(reinforcing pile) interaction was simulated as an elasto-brittle material. The Weibull statistical approach was applied to describing the heterogeneity of geomaterials. As an application of general particle dynamics to slopes, the interaction between the slopes and the reinforcing pile was modelled. The contact between the geomaterials and the reinforcing pile was modelled by using the coupling condition associated with a Lennard-Jones repulsive force. The safety factor, corresponding to the minimum shear strength reduction factor "R", was obtained, and the slip surface of the slope was determined. The numerical results are in good agreement with those obtained from limit equilibrium method and finite element method. It indicates that the proposed geomaterial-structure interaction algorithm works well in the GPD framework. 展开更多

The natural loess that covers the ground surface has good stability due to its low water content. However, when violent earthquakes occur, the strong dynamic stress generated in the slope may induce landslide disasters with different sizes. In this paper,a large-scale shaking table model test is used to reveal the dynamic response and instability failure process of the loess slope. The test results show that different parts of the slope have different vibration characteristics and the first natural frequency in the model increases with the increase of the slope height. The response acceleration of different parts may change due to the coupling relationship between the spectral characteristics of input wave and the natural frequencies of different parts of slope, suggesting the characteristics of regional differential dynamic response.Under the condition of different dynamic response, stress state and boundary conditions of different parts of slope,a rapid microstructural damage, cumulative residual deformation evolution, and tension-shear coupling instability failure process may appear at the top of the slope with the strong dynamic response associated with the increase of dynamic loading intensity. The Sd values presented in this paper may reflect soil damage and slope instability and failure. 展开更多

Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar(SHPB) test was simulated to investigate the distribution of the first principal stress and damage zone of specimen subjected to dynamic compressive load. Numerical models of plate-type specimen containing cracks with inclined angles of 0°,45° and 90° were also established to investigate the crack propagation and damage evolution under dynamic loading. The results show that the simulation results are in accordance with the failure patterns of specimens in experimental test. The interactions between stress wave and crack with different inclined angles are different; damage usually appears around the crack tips firstly; and then more damage zones develop away from the foregoing damage zone after a period of energy accumulation; eventually, the damage zones run through the specimen in the direction of applied loading and split the specimen into pieces. 展开更多

The dynamic failure mode and energybased identification method for a counter-bedding rock slope with weak intercalated layers are discussed in this paper using large scale shaking table test and the Hilbert-Huang Transform(HHT) marginal spectrum. The results show that variations in the peak values of marginal spectra can clearly indicate the process of dynamic damage development inside the model slope. The identification results of marginal spectra closely coincide with the monitoring results of slope face displacement in the test. When subjected to the earthquake excitation with 0.1 g and 0.2 g amplitudes,no seismic damage is observed in the model slope, while the peak values of marginal spectra increase linearly with increasing slope height. In the case of 0.3 g seismic excitation, dynamic damage occurs near the slope crest and some rock blocks fall off the slope crest. When the seismic excitation reaches 0.4 g,the dynamic damage inside the model slope extends to the part with relative height of 0.295-0.6,and minor horizontal cracks occur in the middle part of the model slope. When the seismic excitation reaches 0.6 g,the damage further extends to the slope toe,and the damage inside the model slope extends to the part with relative height below 0.295,and the upper part(near the relative height of 0.8) slides outwards.Longitudinal fissures appear in the slope face, which connect with horizontal cracks, the weak intercalated layers at middle slope height are extruded out and the slope crest breaks up.The marginal spectrum identification results demonstrate that the dynamic damage near the slope face is minor as compared with that inside the model slope. The dynamic failure mode of counter-bedding rock slope with weak intercalated layers is extrusion and sliding at the middle rock strata. The research results of this paper are meaningful for the further understanding of the dynamic failure mode of counter-bedding rock slope with weak intercalated layers. 展开更多
