Based on the structural characteristics of the high-speed loading tester,a four-point bending test device was designed to carry out the four-point bending strength test of glass under the action of static load and different impact velocities, and the formulae for calculating the maximum dynamic stress and strain rate of glass specimens under the action of impact loads were derived. The experimental results show that the bending strength values of the glass under dynamic impact loading are all higher than those under static loading. With the increase of impact speed, the bending strength value of glass specimens generally tends to increase, and the bending strength value increases more obviously when the impact speed exceeds 0.5 m/s or higher.By increasing the impact velocity, higher tensile strain rate of glass specimens can be obtained because the load action time becomes shorter. The bending strength of the glass material increases with its tensile strain rate, and when the tensile strain rate is between 0 and 2 s^(-1),the bending strength of the glass specimen grows more obviously with the strain rate, indicating that the glass bending strength is particularly sensitive to the tensile strain rate in this interval. As the strain rate increases, the number of cracks formed after glass breakage increases significantly, thus requiring more energy to drive the crack formation and expansion, and showing the strain rate effect of bending strength at the macroscopic level. The results of the study can provide a reference for the load bearing and structural design of glass materials under dynamic loading. 展开更多

Experimental investigations on dynamic in-plane compressive behavior of a plain weave composite were performed using the split Hopkinson pressure bar. A quantitative criterion for calculating the constant strain rate of composites was established. Then the upper limit of strain rate, restricted by stress equilibrium and constant loading rate, was rationally estimated and confirmed by tests. Within the achievable range of 0.001/s-895/s, it was found that the strength increased first and subsequently decreased as the strain rate increased. This feature was also reflected by the turning point(579/s) of the bilinear model for strength prediction. The transition in failure mechanism, from local opening damage to completely splitting destruction, was mainly responsible for such strain rate effects. And three major failure modes were summarized under microscopic observations: fiber fracture, inter-fiber fracture, and interface delamination. Finally, by introducing a nonlinear damage variable, a simplified ZWT model was developed to characterize the dynamic mechanical response. Excellent agreement was shown between the experimental and simulated results. 展开更多

In cold regions, the dynamic compressive strength(DCS)of rock damaged by freeze-thaw weathering significantly influences the stability of rock engineering.Nevertheless, testing the dynamic strength under freeze-thaw weathering conditions is often both time-consuming and expensive. Therefore, this study considers the effect of characteristic impedance on DCS and aims to quickly determine the DCS of frozen-thawed rocks through the application of machine-learning techniques.Initially,a database of DCS for frozen-thawed rocks, comprising 216 rock specimens, was compiled.Three external load parameters(freeze-thaw cycle number, confining pressure, and impact pressure)and two rock parameters(characteristic impedance and porosity)were selected as input variables, with DCS as the predicted target. This research optimized the kernel scale, penalty factor, and insensitive loss coefficient of the support vector regression(SVR)model using five swarm intelligent optimization algorithms, leading to the development of five hybrid models. In addition,a statistical DCS prediction equation using multiple linear regression techniques was developed. The performance of the prediction models was comprehensively evaluated using two error indexes and two trend indexes.A sensitivity analysis based on the cosine amplitude method has also been conducted. The results demonstrate that the proposed hybrid SVR-based models consistently provided accurate DCS predictions.Among these models, the SVR model optimized with the chameleon swarm algorithm exhibited the best performance, with metrics indicating its effectiveness, including root mean square error(RMSE)﹦3.9675,mean absolute error(MAE)﹦2.9673,coefficient of determination(R^(2))﹦0.98631,and variance accounted for(VAF)﹦98.634.This suggests that the chameleon swarm algorithm yielded the most optimal results for enhancing SVR models.Notably, impact pressure and characteristic impedance emerged as the two most influential parameters in DCS prediction. This research is anticipated to serve as a reliable reference for estimating the DCS of rocks subjected to freeze-thaw weathering. 展开更多

A comprehensive understanding of the dynamic frictional characteristics in rock joints under high normal load and strong confinement is essential for ensuring the safety of deep engineering construction and mitigating geological disasters. This study conducted shear experiments on rough rock joints under displacement-controlled dynamic normal loads, investigating the shear behaviors of joints across varying initial normal loads, normal loading frequencies, and normal loading amplitudes.Experimental results showed that the peak/valley shear force values increased with initial normal loads and normal loading frequencies but showed an initial increase followed by a decrease with normal loading amplitudes.Dynamic normal loading can either increase or decrease shear strength, while this study demonstrates that higher frequencies lead to enhanced friction.Increased initial normal loading and normal loading frequency result in a gradual decrease in joint roughness coefficient(JRC)values of joint surfaces after shearing.Positive correlations existed between frictional energy dissipation and peak shear forces, while post-shear joint surface roughness exhibited a negative correlation with peak shear forces through linear regression analysis. This study contributes to a better understanding of the sliding responses and shear mechanical characteristics of rock joints under dynamic disturbances. 展开更多

Dynamic tensile failure is a common phenomenon in deep rock practices, and thus accurately evaluating the dynamic tensile responses of rocks under triaxial pressures is of great significance. The Brazilian disc(BD)test is the suggested method by the International Society for Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering(ISRM)for measuring both the static and dynamic tensile strengths of rock-like materials. However, due to the overload phenomenon and the complex preloading conditions, the dynamic tensile strengths of rocks measured by the BD tests tend to be overestimated. To address this issue, the dynamic BD tensile strength(BTS)of Fangshan marble(FM)under different preloading conditions were measured through a triaxial split Hopkinson pressure bar(SHPB).The fracture onset in BD specimen was captured through a strain gage around the disc center. The discrepancy between the traditional tensile strength(TTS,determined by the peak load P_(f) of the BD specimen)and the nominal tensile strength(NTS,obtained from the load P_(i) when the diametral fracture commences in the tested BD specimen)was applied to quantitatively evaluating the overload phenomenon. The Griffith criterion was used to rectify the calculation of the tensile stress at the disc center under triaxial stress states. The results demonstrate that the overload ratio(s)increases with the loading rate(σ)and decreases with the hydrostatic pressure(σ_(s)).The TTS corrected by the Griffith criterion is independent of theσ_(s)due to the overload phenomenon, while the NTS corrected by the Griffith criterion is sensitive to both the andσ.Therefore,it is essential to modify the tensile stress in dynamic confined BD tests using both the overload correction and the Griffith criterion rectification to obtain the accurate dynamic BTS of rocks. 展开更多

Based on the dynamic loading(1-100 s^(-1)) experiments under different temperatures(223-298 K) and stress states, uniaxial and biaxial strength criterion of a Hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene(HTPB)based composite solid propellant were further investigated. These experiments were conducted through the use of a new uniaxial INSTRON testing machine, different new designed gripping apparatus and samples with different configurations. According to the test results, dynamic uniaxial tensile strength criterion of the propellant was directly constructed with the master curve of the uniaxial maximum tensile stress. Whereas, a new method was proposed to determine the dynamic uniaxial compressive strength of the propellant in this study. Then uniaxial compressive strength criterion of the propellant was constructed based on the related master curve. Moreover, it found that the uniaxial tensilecompressive strength ratio of the propellant is more sensitive to loading temperature under the test conditions. The value of this parameter is about 0.4 at room temperature, and it reduces to 0.2-0.3 at low temperatures. Finally, the theoretical biaxial strength criterion of HTPB propellant under dynamic loading was constructed with the unified strength theory, the uniaxial strength and the typical biaxial tensile strength. In addition, the theoretical limit lines of the principal stress plane for the propellant under dynamic loading at different temperatures were further plotted, and the scope of the limit line increases with decreasing temperature. 展开更多

Time-dependence of rock deformation and fracturing is often ignored. However, the consideration of the time-dependence is essential to the study of the deformation and fracturing processes of materials, especially for those subject to strong dynamic loadings. In this paper,we investigate the deformation and fracturing of rocks, its physical origin at the microscopic scale,as well as the mechanisms of the time-dependence of rock strength.Using the thermo-activated and macro-viscous mechanisms,we explained the sensitivity of rock strength to strain rate. These mechanisms dominate the rock strength in different ranges of strain rates. It is also shown that a strain-rate dependent Mohr-Coulomb-type constitutive relationship can be used to describe the influence of strain rate on dynamic rock fragmentation.A relationship between the particle sizes of fractured rocks and the strain rate is also proposed.Several time-dependent fracture criteria are discussed, and their intrinsic relations are discussed. Finally, the application of dynamic strength theories is discussed. 展开更多

The dynamic shear strength of rocks is required for the earthquake-resistant design of nuclear power plants in Japan. This research aims to propose a mathematical model for estimating the dynamic strength and to validate the model. Two different types of specimens were prepared for the model validation, and the monotonic and cyclic loading tests were conducted to obtain the mathematical model parameters.Subsequently, multistep cyclic loading tests were performed, followed by simulations using the mathematical model. The test results demonstrated that the dynamic shear strength exceeded the static shear strength, which agreed with previous researches.Furthermore, the dynamic shear strength calculated using the mathematical model was generally consistent with that obtained from the experimental data. 展开更多

In applications where rocks are subjected to dynamic loads, the dynamic tensile strength is the controlling parameter. Similar to the study of static tensile strength, there are various methods proposed to measure the dynamic tensile strength of rocks. Here we examine dynamic tensile strength values of Laurentian granite(LG) measured from three methods: dynamic direct tension, dynamic Brazilian disc(BD) test, and dynamic semi-circular bending(SCB). We found that the dynamic tensile strength from direct tension has the lowest value, and the dynamic SCB gives the highest strength at a given loading rate. Because the dynamic direct tension measures the intrinsic rock tensile strength, it is thus necessary to reconcile the differences in strength values between the direct tension and the other two methods. We attribute the difference between the dynamic BD results and the direct tension results to the overload and internal friction in BD tests. The difference between the dynamic SCB results and the direct tension results can be understood by invoking the non-local failure theory. It is shown that, after appropriate corrections, the dynamic tensile strengths from the two other tests can be reduced to those from direct tension. 展开更多

Intact rock-like specimens and specimens that include a single, smooth planar joint at various angles are prepared for split Hopkinson pressure bar(SHPB) testing. A buffer pad between the striker bar and the incident bar of an SHPB apparatus is used to absorb some of the shock energy. This can generate loading rates of 20.2-4627.3 GPa/s, enabling dynamic peak stresses/strengths and associated failure patterns of the specimens to be investigated. The effects of the loading rate and angle of load applied on the dynamic peak stresses/strengths of the specimens are examined. Relevant experimental results demonstrate that the failure pattern of each specimen can be classified as four types: Type A, integrated with or without tiny flake-off; Type B, slide failure; Type C, fracture failure; and Type D, crushing failure. The dynamic peak stresses/strengths of the specimens that have similar failure patterns increase linearly with the loading rate, yielding high correlations that are evident on semi-logarithmic plots. The slope of the failure envelope is the smallest for slide failure, followed by crushing failure, and that of fracture failure is the largest. The magnitude of the plot slope of the dynamic peak stress against the loading rate for the specimens that are still integrated after testing is between that of slide failure and crushing failure. The angle of application has a limited effect on the dynamic peak stresses/strengths of the specimens regardless of the failure pattern, but it affects the bounds of the loading rates that yield each failure pattern, and thus influences the dynamic responses of the single jointed specimen. Slide failure occurs at the lowest loading rate of any failure, but can only occur in single jointed specimen that allows sliding.Crushing failure is typically associated with the largest loading rate, and fracture failure may occur when the loading rate is between the boundaries for slide failure and crushing failure. 展开更多

Therefore, studying the dynamic behaviors of ceramics is important. Limited data are available on the dynamic behaviors of ceramics; thus, it is helpful to predict the dynamic strength of ceramics on the basis of their mechanical properties. In this paper, the addition of SrCO3 into zirconia-toughened alumina(ZTA) was demonstrated to improve the fracture toughness of ZTA due to the formation of the SrAl12O19(SA6) phase. The porosity of ZTA was found to be increased by the addition of SrCO3. These newly formed pores served as the nucleation sites of cracks under dynamic load; these cracks eventually coalesced to form damaged zones in the samples. Although the KIC values of the samples were improved, the dynamic strength was not enhanced because of the increase in porosity; in fact, the dynamic strength of ZTA ceramics decreased with the addition of SrCO3. 展开更多

The failure of slope is a progressive process, and the whole sliding surface is caused by the gradual softening of soil strength of the potential sliding surface. From this viewpoint, a local dynamic strength reduction method is proposed to capture the progressive failure of slope. This method can calculate the warning deformation of landslide in this study. Only strength parameters of the yielded zone of landslide will be reduced by using the method. Through continuous local reduction of the strength parameters of the yielded zone, the potential sliding surface developed gradually and evolved to breakthrough finally. The result shows that the proposed method can simulate the progressive failure of slope truly. The yielded zone and deformation of landslide obtained by the method are smaller than those of overall strength reduction method. The warning deformation of landslide can be obtained by using the local dynamic strength reduction method which is based on the softening characteristics of the sliding surface. 展开更多

Considering that there are some limitations in analyzing the anti-sliding seismic stability of dam-foundation systems with the traditional pseudo-static method and response spectrum method, the dynamic strength reduction method was used to study the deep anti-sliding stability of a high gravity dam with a complex dam foundation in response to strong earthquake-induced ground action. Based on static anti-sliding stability analysis of the dam foundation undertaken by decreasing the shear strength parameters of the rock mass in equal proportion, the seismic time history analysis was carried out. The proposed instability criterion for the dynamic strength reduction method was that the peak values of dynamic displacements and plastic strain energy change suddenly with the increase of the strength reduction factor. The elasto-plastic behavior of the dam foundation was idealized using the Drucker-Prager yield criterion based on the associated flow rule assumption. The result of elasto-plastic time history analysis of an overflow dam monolith based on the dynamic strength reduction method was compared with that of the dynamic linear elastic analysis, and the reliability of elasto-plastic time history analysis was confirmed. The results also show that the safety factors of the dam-foundation system in the static and dynamic cases are 3.25 and 3.0, respectively, and that the F2 fault has a significant influence on the anti-sliding stability of the high gravity dam. It is also concluded that the proposed instability criterion for the dynamic strength reduction method is feasible. 展开更多

To study the tensile strength and failure mechanisms of rock with hydro-thermal coupling damage under different loading rates,a series of static and dynamic splitting tests were conducted on thermally treated sandstone under dry and water-saturated conditions.Experimental results showed that high temperatures effectively weakened the tensile strength of sandstone specimens, and the P-wave velocity declined with increasing temperature.Overall, thermal damage of rock increased gradually with increasing temperature, but obvious negative damage appeared at the temperature of 100℃.The water-saturated sandstone specimens had lower indirect tensile strength than the dry ones, which indicated that water-rock interaction led to secondary damage in heat-treated rock.Under both dry and water-saturated conditions, the dynamic tensile strength of sandstone increased with the increase of strain rate. The water-saturated rock specimens showed stronger rate dependence than the dry ones, but the loading rate sensitivity of thermally treated rock decreased with increasing treatment temperature. With the help of scanning electron microscopy technology, the thermal fractures of rock, caused by extreme temperature, were analyzed.Hydro-physical mechanisms of sandstone under different loading rate conditions after heat treatment were further discussed. 展开更多

This study aimed to elucidate the strength weakening effect of high static pre-stressed rocks subjected to low-frequency disturbances under uniaxial compression.Based on the uniaxial compressive strength(UCS)of granite under static loading,70%,80%,and 90%of UCS were selected as the initial high static pre-stress(σ_(p)),and then the pre-stressed rock specimens were disturbed by sinusoidal stress with amplitudes of 30%,20%,and 10%of UCS under low-frequency frequencies(f)of 1,2,5,and 10 Hz,respectively. The results show that the rockburst failure of pre-stressed granite is caused by low-frequency disturbance, and the failure strength is much lower than UCS.When theσp or f is constant, the specimen strength gradually decreases as the f or σ_(p) increases. The experimental study illustrates the influence mechanism of the strength weakening effect of high static pre-stress rocks under low-frequency dynamic disturbance, that is,high static pre-stress is the premise and leading factor of rock strength weakening, while low-frequency dynamic disturbance induces rock failure and affects the strength weakening degree. 展开更多

To investigate the influence of microwave heating on the dynamic behavior and failure mechanisms of rock, dynamic compression tests were conducted on microwave-irradiated sandstone specimens using a modified split Hopkinson pressure bar(SHPB)system.Experimental results show that microwave radiation can effectively weaken the compressive strength of sandstone.Rock specimens show three different failure modes under impact load:tensile failure, tensile−shear composite failure and compressive−shear failure. The dynamic Poisson’s ratio, calculated using the measured P-and S-wave velocities,is introduced to describe the deformation characteristics of sandstone. With the increase in microwave power and heating time, the Poisson’s ratio declines first and then increases slightly, and the turning point occurs at 244.6℃.Moreover,the microstructural characteristics reveal that microwave radiation produces dehydration, pore expansion, and cracking of the rock. The damage mechanisms caused by microwave radiation are discussed based on thermal stress and steam pressure inside the rock, which provides a reasonable explanation for the experimental results. 展开更多

The dynamic effective shear strength of saturated sand under cyclic loading is discussed in this paper. The discussion includes the transient time depen- dency behaviors based on the analysis of the results obtained in conventional cyclic triaxial tests and cyclic torsional shear triaxial tests. It has been found that the dy- namic effective shear strength is composed of effective frictional resistance and viscous resistance, which are characterized by the strain rate dependent feature of strength magnitude, the coupling of consolidation stress with cyclic stress and the dependency of time needed to make the soil strength sufficiently mobilized, and can also be ex- pressed by the extended Mohr-Coulomb's law.The two strength parameters of the dynamic effective internal frictional angle φd and the dynamic viscosity coefficient η are determined. The former is unvaried for different number of cyclic loading,dy- namic stress form and consolidation stress ratio. And the later is unvaried for the different dynamic shear strain rate γt developed during the sand liquefaction, but increases with the increase of initial density of sand. The generalization of dynamic effective stress strength criterion in the 3-dimensional effective stress space is studied in detail for the purpose of its practical use. 展开更多

An elusive phenomenon is observed in previous investigations on dynamic fracture that the dynamic fracture toughness (DFT) of high strength metals always increases with the loading rate on the order of TPa.m1/2.s-1. For the purpose of verification, variation of DFT with the loading rate for two high strength steels commonly used in the aviation industry, 30CrMnSiA and 40Cr, is studied in this work. Results of the experiments are compared, which were conducted on the modified split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) apparatus, with striker velocities ranging from 9.2 to 24.1 m/s and a constant value of 16.3 m/s for 30CrMnSiA and 40Cr, respectively. It is observed that for 30CrMnSiA, the crack tip loading rate increases with the increase of the striker velocity, while the fracture initiation time and the DFT simultaneously decrease. However, in the tests of 40Cr, there is also an increasing tendency of DFT, similar to other reports. Through an in-depth investigation on the relationship between the dynamic stress intensity factor (DSIF) and the loading rate, it is concluded that the generally increasing tendency in previous studies could be false, which is induced from a limited striker velocity domain and the errors existing in the experimental and numerical processes. To disclose the real dependency of DFT on the loading rate, experimentsneed to be performed in a comparatively large striker velocity range. 展开更多

Three groups of tests are performed (Groups I, II, and III). The initial deviator stresses of Groups I and II are same and the dynamic stress ampli- tude of Group II is twice as that of Group I. The minimum value of dynamic stress in Group IlI is near zero and its dynamic stress amplitude is larger than those of Groups I and II. In tests of all three groups there are similar change trends of accttmulative sWain, but with different values. The accumulative swain curves consist of three stages, namely, the initial stage, the steady stage, and the gradual flow stage. In the tests of Groups I and II, during the initial stage with vibration times less than 50 loops the strain ampli- tude decreased with the increase of vibration times and then basically remained constant, fluctuating in a very small range. For the tests of Group III, during the initial and steady stages the sWain amplitude decreased with the increase of vibration times, and then increased rapidly in the gradual flow stage. The dynamic strength of frozen silt decreases and trends to terminal dynamic strength as the vibration times of loading increase. 展开更多
