The spatial temPOral evolution characteristics of the load/unload response ratio (Y) before strong earthquakes is studied in this paper. The results show that the regions of high value of Y migrate and converge to the impending earthquake epicenter from different directions before the occurrence of the event. Basing on this discovery, it is proposed that the method can be used to predict the three elements of an earthquake. It was applied to predict that an earthquake would occur in the western part of Yunnan Province, southwestern China. The three elements (time, space and magnitude) of the Menglian earthquake with Ms7.3 which occurred on July 12, 1995 in Yunnan Province tallied with our prediction. 展开更多

The historical earthquake data is one of the important foundations for seismic monitoring, earthquake fore-cast and seismic safety evaluation. However, the recognition of earthquake is limited by the scientific and techno-logical level. Therefore, the earthquake can only be described using perfect earthquake catalogue after the seismo-graph is invented. Before this time, the earthquake parameters were determined according to the earthquake disas-ter on the surface and the written records in history, and the earthquake level was measured using earthquake in-tensity. …… 展开更多

Based on finite element method, the extrusion deformation process of ground surface during the Lushan earthquake (April 20, 2013) is investigated in this work. In order to construct the finite element model of Lushan earthquake structure, the geophysical layer model of Lushan area, the frictional characteristic of slip-weaken along the fault surface, and the Coulomb failure criterion are considered. Through the computation and the comparison with achievement on the Lushan focal dynamics, our researches indicate that: (1) The most extrusion deformation of ground surface occurred in the initial phase of earthquake procession, i.e., between the fourth and sixth seconds after the earthquake occurred. (2) Between the first and sixth seconds after the earthquake, the extrusion deformation concentrates on the surface projection of earthquake fault. (3) Between the first and third seconds after the earthquake, the extrusion deformation of ground surface is very tiny. Meanwhile, the extrusion deformation reaches maximum at the sixth second after earthquake. (4) After 6 s of Lushan earthquake, the extrusion deformation spread out of earthquake structure projection. (5) During the earthquake, the maximum of extrusion deformation on ground surface is larger than the final deformation of the post-earthquake, in other words, the ground extrusion deformation will lastly reach a relatively small value after the Lushan earthquake occurred. 展开更多

However, GPS stations are scattered, sparse and cannot provide a detailed distribution of coseismic displacement. Strong ground motion records share the same disadvantages as GPS in estimating coseismic displacement. Estimations from InSAR data can provide displacement distributions; however, the resolution of such methods is limited by the analysis techniques. The paper focuses on estimating the coseismic displacement of the Ms7.0 Lushan earthquake on April 20, 2013 using a simulation of the wave field based on the elastic wave equation instead of a quasi-static equation. First, the media and source models were con- structed by comparing the simulated velocity and the record velocity of the ground motion. Then simulated static displacements were compared with GPS records. Their agreement validates our results. Careful analysis of the distribution of simulated coseismic displacements near the fault reveals more details of the ground motion. For example, an uplift appears on the hanging wall of the fault, rotation is associated with the horizontal displacement, the fault strike and earthquake epicenter provide the main control on motion near the faults, and the motion on the hanging wall is stronger than that on the footwall. These results reveal additional characteristics of the ground motion of the Lushan earthquake. 展开更多

Shapai Roller Compacted Concrete(RCC) Arch Dam is the highest RCC arch dam of the 20th century in the world with a maximum height of 132m,and it is the only concrete arch dam near the epicentre of Wenchuan earthquake on May 12th,2008.The seismic damage to the dam and the resistance of the dam has drawn great attention. This paper analyzed the response and resistance of the dam to the seismic wave using numerical simulations with comparison to the monitored data. The field investigation after the earthquake and analysis of insitu data record showed that there was only little variation in the opening size at the dam and foundation interface, transverse joints and inducing joints before and after the earthquake. The overall stability of the dam abutment resistance body was quite good except a little relaxation was observed. The results of the dynamic finite element method(FEM) showed that the sizes of the openings obtained from the numerical modeling are comparable with the monitored values, and the change of the opening size is in millimeter range. This study revealed that Shapai arch dam exhibited high seismic resistance and overload capacity in the Wenchuan earthquake event. The comparison of the monitored and simulated results showed that the numerical method applied in this paper well simulated the seismic response of the dam.The method could be useful in the future application on the safety evaluation of RCC dams. 展开更多
