In contrast to the input perspective for evaluating planning metrics, this research takes the climatic environmental output effects as the starting point for assessing ecological city construction. Based on approaches such as observation data analysis, meteorological model simulation, and remote sensing, a set of climatic environmental performance assessment methods is developed and established. These methods mainly focus on surface ventilation assessment and urban thermal environment assessment. With the Yanqi Lake ecological development demonstration area located in Huairou district, Beijing as an example, the assessment of the local climatic environment before and after the construction are conducted, and relevant policy suggestions for urban planning and construction are presented. The results show that after development, the ventilation capacity will decrease overall and the ventilation potential index will decrease from 0.53 to 0.44. While this is not a large reduction, and is still at a favorable level, the ventilation potential in some local areas will markedly decrease. Furthermore, the thermal environment will become poorer to some extent; the urban heat island(UHI) area and intensity will increase compared with the current situation;continuous heat islands may occur in local areas; the UHI potential index of the core area will rise from 0.0878 to 0.1217(still a favorable level). Therefore, urban surfaces should be carefully developed and arranged during planning. It is suggested that the negative impacts of large areas of urban construction on the local climatic environment in the Yanqi Lake could be mitigated by 1) strengthening the airflow by introducing fresh, cold, northwesterly air via constructed ventilation corridors, 2) increasing the number of ecological cold sources, particularly for water bodies and green belts to prevent the UHI in the southern region of Yanqi Lake from becoming linked with each other, and 3) considering a pre-program before sub-domain and building planning to obtain optimum building locations. Different construction standards should be developed for different ventilation potential and UHI intensity levels. For strong heat island areas, land areas should be reserved to serve as cold sources. 展开更多

The construction of an ecological city has two founda- tional platforms: the small platform, namely urban district or simply called as "city ecosystem"; and the big platform, namely around city district in certain region scope or also referred to as "city-region ecosystem". The construction of an ecological city must be launched in the dual spatial criteria: in city (urban district) criterion—optimizing the city ecosystem; in city-region (city territory) criterion—optimizing the city-region ecosystem. Luoy-ang has the bright characteristic and the typical image within cities of China, and even in the world. The construction of an ecological city in dual spatial criteria—the city and the city-region—has the vital significance to urbanization advancement and sustainable development in Luoyang. In city-region criterion, the primary mission of Luoyang’s ecological city construction is to create a fine ecological environment platform in its city territory. In city criterion, the basic duty of Luoyang’s ecologic city construction is to enhance the ecological capacity and benefit of the central city. 展开更多

The contrast between ecology in cities and ecology of cities has emphasized the increasing scope of urban ecosystem research.Ecology in focuses on terrestrial and aquatic patches within cities, suburbs, and exurbs as analogs of non-urban habitats.Urban fabric outside analog patches is considered to be inhospi-table matrix.Ecology of the city differs from ecology in by treating entire urban mosaics as social-ecolog-ical systems.Ecology of urban ecosystems incorporates biological, social, and built components.Originally posed as a metaphor to visualize disciplinary evolution, this paper suggests that the contrast has conceptual, empirical, and methodological contents. That is,the contrast constitutes a disciplinary or“local”paradigm shift. The paradigm change between ecology in and ecology of represents increased complexity, moving from focus on biotic communities to holistic social-ecological systems.A third paradigm, ecology for the city, has emerged due to concern for urban sustainability. While ecology for includes the knowledge generated by both ecology in and ecology of,it considers researchers as a part of the system, and acknowledges that they may help envision and advance the social goals of urban sustainability.Using urban heterogeneity as a key urban feature, the three paradigms are shown to contrast in five important ways:disciplinary focus, the relevant theory of spatial heterogeneity, the technology for representing spatial structure, the resulting classification of urban mosaics, and the nature of application to sustainability.Ecology for the city encourages ecologists to engage with other specialists and urban dwellers to shape a more sustainable urban future. 展开更多

Urban agglomeration of the Yangtze Delta (UAYD), one of the most developed regions of China, has witnessed an increasing prevalence in building ecological cities when the ecological cities are pursued by many modem cities, and great achievements have been made in this regard. It is inevitable, however, that certain problems exist during the construction of ecological city, which include but not limited to non-harmonious development of urban complex ecosystem, and the difficulty in quantifying eco-city construction or incomplete quantification in assessing the construction of present and future eco-city. Based on the analysis on social-economic conditions and regional conditions of the UAYD, this paper attempts to set up an index system of eco-cities combining with local characteristics, and to adopt the indices of eco-city, urban harmony, and eco-city colligate to evaluate the ecological level, urban harmonious development and eco-city construction of cities within the UAYD. Results indicate that among 15 cities in UAYD, Suzhou City ranks the highest in terms of eco-city construction, whereas Nantong ranks relatively lower; sustainable eco-city construction is possible only when cities are developed in every respect of harmony. 展开更多

To promote urban sustainability and resilience, there is an increasing demand for actionable science that links science and decision making based on social-ecological knowledge.Approaches, frameworks, and practices for such actionable science are needed and have only begun to emerge. We propose that approaches based on the co-design and co-production of knowledge can play an essential role to meet this demand.Although the antecedents for approaches to the co-design and co-production of knowledge are decades old,the integration of science and practice to advance urban sustainability and resilience that we present is different in several ways. These differences include the disciplines needed, diversity and number of actors involved, and the technological infrastructures that facilitate local-to global connections. In this article,we discuss how the new requirements and possibilities for co-design,co-production,and practical use of social-ecological research can be used as an ecology for the city to promote urban sustainability and resilience. While new technologies are part of the solution, traditional approaches also remain important.Using our urban experiences with long-term,place-based research from several U.S.Long-Term Ecological Research sites and U.S.Department of Agriculture,Forest Service Urban Field Stations,we describe a dynamic framework for linking research with decisions. We posit that this framework, coupled with a user-defined,theory-based approach to science,is instrumental to advance both practice and science.Ultimately, cities are ideal places for integrating basic science and decision making, facilitating flows of information through networks, and developing sustainable and resilient solutions and futures. 展开更多

The Fifth Plenary meeting of the 18 th Central Committee put forward the idea of creative green development, which become the guide which is important concept of economic and social development in our country in the future. The contradiction between resource environment and economic development is becoming more and more outstanding with the speeding up of urbanization process in western region. The coming of big data and information age, makes the wisdom of ecological city construction to be the mainstream direction of urban development, and green development also become the core of the ecological city wisdom. In ecological concept gradually deepening of the information age, the construction of smart ecological city becomes the mainstream direction, green development also becomes the core of the smart ecological city. The path and strategies of promoting green development of western cities based on the smart ecological cities were presented in this paper, through the analysis of the background of the smart ecological city construction, the calculation of the environment carrying capacity and the ecological footprint, as well as the target for the sustainable green development of the western cities. 展开更多

Although urbanization poses various threats to avifauna, some bird species, including Mallards(Anas platyrhynchos),choose towns and cities as their wintering habitats, possibly due to favourable temperatures and abundant anthropogenic food.In this study,we investigated how population dynamics changed in relation to winter harshness and intensity of supplementary bird feeding in Mallard,a dabbing duck species well adapted to an urban environment. We surveyed 15 city ponds for five consecutive years, counting overwintering individuals and incidents of bird feeding conducted by the citizens of Gda′nsk.Number of Mallards observed in the studied area fluctuated both annually and within seasons, with on average 327(±SD=108.5)individuals and a malebiased sex ratio reported. We observed a gradient of feeding intensity on the surveyed ponds, with number of feeding incidents ranging from 0 to 30 in a day.The results indicated that the number of Mallards increased with the bird feeding intensity, independently of the size of the studied ponds, and both males and females were similarly attracted by food provisioning.More severe wintering conditions, expressed by the percentage of the ice cover of studied ponds resulted in more birds wintering in the urban area. This effect was more pronounced in females compared to males, possibly due to females having a lower ability to withstand severe wintering conditions, forcing them to relocate towards urban areas. Our results confirm that urbanized areas may serve as wintering grounds for birds, due to additional food resources available there and milder wintering conditions compared to surrounding rural areas. 展开更多

Chinese cities need the appropriate administration system and governance model to support the implementation of low carbon eco-city projects, and to effectively scale up this urban development model across the nation. Currently, local planning authorities are piloting the implementation of these low carbon eco-city projects through the statutory Regulatory Plans system(the local district zoning plans system). However, the focus has been put primarily on the use of the relevant technologies and the control through design approval. There is a lack on research and study on the establishment of an effective planning administration and governance environment for the subsequent promulgation of this development model. This situation is affecting the speed in the scaling up of the implementation of low carbon ecological projects in Chinese cities. This paper argues that while technology applications and design issues are important factors, attention shall be put to setting up innovative planning administration and governance models for the statutory Regulatory Plan to facilitate the implementation of the low carbon eco-city projects. This paper puts forth an analysis framework on the administration and governance system which includes 4 governance components:(1) Administration platform and local capacity;(2) Planning conditions and approval process;(3) External public policy context;(4) Developers involvement and participation. A case study was undertaken based on Taihu New City eco-city project located at Wuxi, China. Based on research and analysis of the project implementation process, the study examines the challenges faced by the local planning offi cials and development companies during the implementation stage of the low carbon eco-city project. Finally this paper puts forth initial recommendations that could lead to further research in this important area. 展开更多
