Hedging Devices used in the Opinion Column'S Editorials of China Daily

The editorials of the opinion column in a newspaper express the view of its editors. The application of hedging devices isemployed, in order to support the writers' writing. In this study, the data were gathered from 15 editorials in the opinion column ofChina Daily: 5 editorials are about world issues, the other 5 editorials about Chinese social life, and the last 5 editorials are the edu-cational issues popularly discussed in China. The categorization of hedging devices draws from salvager-Meyer's paper Hedges and Textual Communicative Function in Medical English Written Discourse(1994, p. 154) and Mojica(2005, p. 3). Results revealed thatmost writers of the editorials opted to use approximators and modals. Furthermore, the hedging devices used in the selected editori-als on China Daily mainly had three functions: Show respects of the people or organization or in order for protection; in order to pub-lish timely; and make the prediction more reliable. In general, the Chinese writers seem to be conscious to use hedges appropriatelyin order to make their writing more reliable and avoid some arguments or disparagement.

Publication behaviour and(dis)qualification of chief editors in Turkish national Social Sciences journals

Purpose:This study investigated the publication behaviour of 573 chief editors managing 432 Social Sciences journals in Turkey.Direct inquiries into editorial qualifications are rare,and this research aims to shed light on editors’scientific leadership capabilities.Design/methodology/approach:This study contrasts insider publication behaviour in national journals with international articles in journals indexed by the Web of Science(WOS)and Scopus.It argues that editors demonstrating a consistent ability to publish in competitive WOS and Scopus indexed journals signal high qualifications,while editors with persistent insider behaviour and strong local orientation signal low qualification.Scientific leadership capability is measured by first-authored publications.Correlation and various regression tests are conducted to identify significant determinants of publication behaviour.Findings:International publications are rare and concentrated on a few individuals,while insider publications are endemic and constitute nearly 40%of all national articles.Editors publish 3.2 insider papers and 8.1 national papers for every SSCI article.62%(58%)of the editors have no SSCI(Scopus)article,53%(63%)do not have a single lead-authored WOS(Scopus)article,and 89%publish at least one insider paper.Only a minority consistently publish in international journals;a fifth of the editors have three or more SSCI publications,and a quarter have three or more Scopus articles.Editors with foreign Ph.D.degrees are the most qualified and internationally oriented,whereas non-mobile editors are the most underqualified and underperform other editors by every measure.Illustrating the overall lack of qualification,nearly half of the professor editors and the majority of the WOS and Scopus indexed journal editors have no record of SSCI or Scopus publications.Research limitations:This research relies on local settings that encourage national publications at the expense of international journals.Findings should be evaluated in light of this setting and bearing in mind that narrow localities are more prone to peer favouritism.Practical implications:Incompetent and nepotistic editors pose an imminent threat to Turkish national literature.A lasting solution would likely include the dismissal and replacement of unqualified editors,as well as delisting and closure of dozens of journals that operate in questionable ways and serve little scientific purpose.Originality/value:To my knowledge,this is the first study to document the publication behaviour of national journal chief editors.

How to manage and avoid revision after unicompartmental knee arthroplasty?

The article by Zhao et al presents a retrospective case series on the reasons for initial revision after unicompartmental knee arthroplasty(UKA).Clarifying the reasons that may cause UKA revision can further reduce the rate of revision UKA,focusing on gasket dislocation,osteophytes,intra-articular loose bodies,and tibial prosthesis loosening.This article provides valuable insights,not only by detailing the revision status of 13 patients who underwent revision after initial UKA but also by providing a comprehensive analysis of the incidence of revision after initial UKA.By reviewing and analyzing the causes,they established references for the early detection of risk factors for revision in clinical practice and for formulating surgical strategies and rehabilitation programmes.This commentary emphasizes the need for a meticulous understanding and an analysis of the revision rate following initial UKA and related management strategies.The implant rates,regional variation,and benefits of uncemented Oxford UKA have been explored,particularly in terms of bone preservation,appropriate surgical techniques,and weight management to control complications and improve patient prognosis.

Pituitary metastasis from lung adenocarcinoma

Pituitary tumor is a common neuroendocrine tumor,but there are also rare clinical metastases at this site,which are generally transferred from extrabellar tumors.Although the clinical incidence is low,the prognosis is poor.The purpose of this editorial is to discuss further the relevant knowledge of pituitary metas-tases and remind clinicians to prevent missed diagnosis and improve the prog-nosis of these patients.

Medical imaging for the diagnosis,recurrence and metastasis evaluation of clear cell sarcoma

Clear cell sarcoma(CCS)of soft tissue is extremely rare,accounting for approximately 1%of all soft tissue tumours.It is very difficult to diagnose CCS based on clinical manifestations.Magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)provides highresolution images of soft tissues and pathological features such as mucus,necrosis,bleeding,and fat through high and low signals on T1 weighted image(T1WI)and T2 weighted image(T2WI).On the other hand,the paramagnetism of melanin in CCS shortens the relaxation time of T1 and T2,and high signal intensity on T1WI and low signal intensity on T2WI can be found.This is different from most other soft tissue sarcomas.At present,the treatment method for CCS is surgical resection.MRI can effectively display the tumour edge,extent of surrounding oedema,and extent of fat involvement,which is highly important for guiding surgical resection and predicting postoperative recurrence.As an invasive sarcoma,CCS has a high risk of metastasis.Regardless of the pathological condition of the resected tumour,MRI or computed tomography(CT)should be performed every 1-2 years to assess recurrence at the primary site and to screen for metastasis in the lungs,liver,and bones.If necessary,PET-CT can be performed to evaluate the overall condition of the patient.

Therapeutic effect of the metaverse on mental health

López del Hoyo et al collections reported the meta verse based on the virtual reality,augmented reality and artificial intelligence could be used in the therapy of mental health,although there were still some challenges.This manuscript reported that the meta verse is a prospective method to improve the prognosis of mental health problems.

Case reports,often overlooked in evidence-based medicine(EBM),play a pivotal role in healthcare research.They provide unique insights into rare conditions,novel treatments,and adverse effects,serving as valuable educational tools and generating new hypothesis.Despite their limitations in generalizability,case reports contribute significantly to evidence-based practice by offering detailed clinical information and fostering critical thinking among healthcare professionals.By acknowledging their limitations and adhering to reporting guidelines,case reports can contribute significantly to medical knowledge and patient care within the evolving landscape of EBM.This editorial explores the intrinsic value of case reports in EBM and patient care.

Metastatic clear cell sarcoma of the pancreas:From diagnosis to treatment

This article presents a comprehensive case report on an uncommon instance of metastatic clear cell sarcoma(CCS)originating from the pancreas.The high mortality rate of pancreatic carcinoma underscores the importance of precise diagnosis and early detection.The authors report a novel case of CCS with pancreatic metastasis,detailing successful surgical intervention through distal pancreatectomy and splenectomy,resulting in favourable outcomes.This study highlights the standard role of surgery in treating advanced CCS and emphasizes preoperative imaging and thorough patient history assessment.This article also underscores the necessity for long-term surveillance due to the potential for recurrence or metastasis.Despite the favourable recovery postsurgery,the absence of subsequent follow-up evaluation prompts consideration of the need for extended monitoring.This article raises questions about the nature of the pancreatic lesion and suggests the possibility of a primary lesion.Further evidence is crucial to establish the correlation between the features related to the development of the patient's primary and metastatic tumours.In conclusion,this study offers valuable insights into metastatic CCS of the pancreas,highlighting the importance of regular postoperative follow-up for improved outcomes through early detection and intervention.

Periodontal disease:A silent factor in the development and progression of diabetic retinopathy

The global increase in the prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM)and its complications presents significant challenges to public health.Recently,periodontal disease(PD)was recognized as a factor that is likely to influence the progression of T2DM and its complications due to its potential to exacerbate systemic inflammation and oxidative stress.In this editorial,we comment on the article published by Thazhe Poyil et al in the very recent issue of the World Journal of Diabetes in 2024,which investigated the correlation between PD and diabetic retinopathy(DR)in T2DM patients,with emphasis on the association between periodontal swollen surface area,glycated hemoglobin(HbA1c),interleukin-6(IL-6),and lipoprotein(a).The findings by Thazhe Poyil et al are significant as they demonstrate a strong link between PD and DR in T2DM patients.This correlation highlights the importance of addressing periodontal health in diabetes management to potentially reduce the risk and severity of DR,a complication of diabetes.The integration of periodontal evaluation and treatment into diabetes care protocols may lead to improved glycemic control and better overall outcomes for T2DM patients.A few studies have established an interconnection between PD and diabetic complication,specifically DR,in T2DM patients,which we aim to highlight in this editorial.Emphasis was placed on the different mechanisms that suggest a bidirectional relationship between PD and T2DM,where the presence of periodontal inflammation negatively influenced glycemic control and contributed to the development and progression of DR through shared inflammatory and vascular mechanisms.This article highlights the importance of collaboration amongst diabetes specialists,ophthalmologists,periodontists,and public health professionals to advance the prevention,early detection,and treatment of PD and DR.This will improve the health and quality of life of T2DM patients.Moreover,the editorial highlights the need for further research on the specific molecular and immunological mechanisms that underlie the link between periodontitis and DR,with identification of common inflammatory biomarkers and signaling pathways.This is expected to facilitate effective direction of therapeutic objectives,thereby improving the management of diabetes and its complications through integrated care that incorporates oral health.

Protein C deficiency with venous and arterial thromboembolic events

Protein C(PC)is a key component of the vitamin K-dependent coagulation pathway.It exerts anticoagulant effects by inactivating factors V and VIII.Acquired or inherited PC deficiency results in a prothrombotic state,with presentations varying from asymptomatic to venous thromboembolism.However,there has been an increasing number of reports linking PC deficiency to arterial thromboembolic events,such as myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke.This editorial focuses on the association between PC deficiency and thromboembolism,which may provide some insights for treatment strategy and scientific research.

On June 21,2024,the 2024 working meeting of the Editorial Board of Astronomical Techniques and Instruments(ATI)and the inaugural meeting of the first Young Editorial Board were successfully held in Dali,Yunnan,China.More than 30 editorial board members and young editorial board members of ATI from research institutes such as Yunnan Observatories,CAS,Nanjing Institute of Astronomical Optics&Technology,CAS,Institute of Optics and Electronics,CAS,as well as universities like Nanjing University,Sun Yat-sen University,and Shandong University attended the meeting.
