International Students’ Feeling of Shame in the Higher Education: An Intersectional Analysis of Their Racialised, Gendered and Classed Experiences in the UK Universities

The literature on international students’ experiences frequently depicts them within a ‘deficient’ framework, highlighting their perceived lack of essential skills for managing their studies. Moreover, international students’ emotional experiences are often construed as personal and psychological attributes, with their emotions viewed as transient and pathological phases that they will eventually overcome to assimilate into the local context. However, there exists a dearth of literature investigating international students’ experiences from a sociological perspective, particularly concerning their emotional experiences within the broader social and political milieu. Utilizing a longitudinal research design to monitor 25 Chinese international postgraduates from multiple universities in London and Glasgow over the course of one year, this study illuminates the racialised, classed, and gendered dimensions of international students’ experiences in UK higher education through an exploration of their feelings of shame. Drawing on the research findings, it is evident that power relations operate insidiously and covertly to systematically frame international students’ experiences as personal or cultural ‘deficiency’. This process represents a form of misrecognition, which manifests in racialised, gendered, and classed feelings of shame, experienced at the personal level as insecurity, ‘stupidity’, exclusion, and self-doubt. Consequently, social and cultural inequalities within higher education are often situated at the individual level. 展开更多

With the further development of economic globalization since the establishment of ties between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations(ASEAN) 30 years ago and the continuous increase in the scale of international students in China, the training of international talents has become an important approach to avoiding the risks of transnational investments. We established panel data by selecting variables from the period 2006 to 2017,including the scale of international students coming from ASEAN to China, the gross amount of China’s outward foreign direct investment(OFDI),and the GDP per capita of ASEAN countries to further explore the correlations among these variables. We applied a panel-vector autoregressive(PVAR) model to conducting a Granger causality test,a Gaussian mixture model(GMM) regression analysis,a Monte Carlo-based impulse response analysis, and variance decomposition of the data. The results show that the growth of OFDI exerted an obvious positive impact on the inflow of international students from the countries along the Belt and Road(B&R) within a short period, the growth of the scale of international students coming from these countries to study in China had a strong positive effect on OFDI,the training of international talents was conducive to promoting the scale of transnational investments, but the overall quality was not very high, and its economic contribution rate was low.It is also found that OFDI and the scale of international students from the countries along the B&R promoted the GDP growth to a certain extent and the positive accumulation effect fluctuated due to external factors. Therefore,it is suggested to expanding the scale of OFDI and improving China’s core competitiveness in international student education.Intensive management of investment factors should also be conducted along with sound development of training mechanisms for international talents. 展开更多

Over the past decades,China has become the education hub for many international students due to its internalization policies, education standards, economic advantage and the technological advancement. However, due to the impact of COVID-19 pandemic which also affected the educational sector, the closure of boarder necessitated the transition from in-person teaching to virtual teaching for international students unable to come to China due to restrictions. This paper focuses first on the concept of internationalization, internationalization mechanism of China and the management model of international students and second on the current situation of international students within and without China. The source of the data for this study consists of previous literature and survey data collected using an online questionnaire. The findings of this study reveal that international students experienced minor difficulties in transitioning and adapting to online classes, although the level of satisfaction of the students is low.Based on the findings of the study it can be concluded that the Chinese internationalization agenda and corporations can be further enhanced by establishing online programs for international students, which will require rigorous adjustment of the curriculum to accommodate more people around the globe among other considerations. 展开更多

Nursing students have uniqueness within the general university student population as they are among the primary practitioners of the “Healthy China Strategy 2030” and guardians of people’s health. Innovating and strengthening ideological and political education for nursing students, enhancing their skills in serving the people, is a significant political task for medical universities. Against the backdrop of the “Healthy China Strategy,” how to effectively improve nursing students’ professional competencies, integrate life education, medical humanities education, and general ideological and political education, and utilize life education to construct a more suitable ideological and political education system for nursing students, in order to better establish correct worldviews, values, and professional outlooks, are urgent practical issues that need to be addressed in ideological and political education in medical universities. This article takes life education as an entry point and focuses on integrating it with the internalization and unification of ideological and political education courses, aiming to explore the possibilities and new pathways for integrating life education into the ideological and political education of nursing students in the new era. 展开更多

IntroductionCurrently, there are at least 850,000 people living with human immuno-deficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immuno-deficiency syndrome (AIDS) in China. Among them 16-29 years old account for about 65%. According to the Chinese health authorities, if the preventive measures are not effective, the figure could reach as many as 10 million by the year 2010[1]. Since there are currently no cure or vaccines for HIV/AIDS, changing people's high-risk behaviors is the main approach that is taken to slow down the epidemic. This can be done through effective HIV/AIDS education, especially for young people. In 1997, a 4-year adolescent HIV/AIDS peer education program was introduced to in Beijing and Shanghai, which was based on a successful Australian model developed by Professor Roger Short, in which senior medical students were trained and used as peer educators to teach their junior peers about HIV/AIDS[2].…… 展开更多

From 2010,a drastic increase in international students’enrollment in many higher education institutions in China has led to the growth of English-medium instruction(EMI)practices and relevant research. With many state-level and province-level initiatives to promote the design and development of model EMI courses, international students’perspectives of these courses are not adequately reflected in the international literature which is primarily done in European higher education contexts. This study takes a qualitative approach by analyzing international students’EMI courses reflection reports, focus group interviews and observation notes of video-recorded EMI courses to probe into their perspectives on EMI practices in a business institute in a university of Shanghai. The findings show that international students show concerns about the systematic design of the curriculum, pedagogical problems and contextual limitations in EMI practices. All EMI stakeholders like curriculum developers, teaching administrators, teachers and students are responsible for these problems. Therefore, meaningful and consistent communication should be greatly promoted among all EMI practices stakeholders. The article concludes with recommendations for further research on model EMI courses in China. 展开更多

BACKGROUND The ongoing coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic and the universal implementation of control measures are fundamentally affecting every aspect of our society and daily lives.AIM To evaluate the prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms and their associated factors as well as the effects and attitudes towards online education in Chinese high school students.METHODS A total of 883 students were included. The first, second and third-year students of a high school in Lanzhou,Gansu province of China were invited to participate in this study. They were requested to involve their parents to complete the survey together.A detailed questionnaire of 65 questions was designed and divided into five sections. The survey was anonymously conducted via WeChat,a Chinese multipurpose messaging, social media and mobile payment app.RESULTS Overall,32.94%of students experienced post-traumatic stress disorder due to the COVID-19 epidemic. The majority of students(60.82%)felt that online education was not(10.76%)or less effective(50.06%)in terms of gaining knowledge and improving practical and communications skills.Correlation analysis revealed that the class level, residential background and whether living with parents were significantly linked with the effectiveness and satisfaction of the online education system.Of the final year students,74.2%said that the COVID-19 outbreak has negatively affected their preparation for the college entrance exam, and 68%of students felt that this outbreak increased psychological pressure for their college entrance examination preparation. In case of having COVID-19 symptoms during the exam,50.7%,13.3%,and 10.2%would notify the proctor, teacher and parents, respectively.CONCLUSION We found a high prevalence rate of post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms in high school students. Thus, our results call for urgent attention from both government and schools to implement effective interventions to cope with the psychological effects and the disturbance of education by COVID-19 on children. 展开更多
