Fantastic Educational Gaps and Where to Find Them:LERB-A Model to Classify Inequity and Inequality

In today’s world,education is less being considered as an outcome,but more as a journey.As the adventurers,our students are facing more and more complex challenges.Previously,the socio-economic status of a student’s family seemed to be one of the biggest factors among inequality causes.Nowadays,the chaotic situation of today's VUCA world(volatility,uncertainty,complexity,and ambiguity)is generating more and more types of inequity and inequality.Thus,the purpose of the study is to develop LERB-a simple model to classify inequity and inequality,as a stepping-stone to build a gap detection framework.Through a structured literature review,the study identified the interconnection between equity and equality,as well as their transition toward students as an individual or as a group(s)and subgroup(s).The study can also be adapted to examine the correlation between different categories of equity,as well as to brainstorm and propose remedies to tackle those gaps.

A Historical Review of the Development of Women’s Higher Education in China (1908-2020): Stages, Explanations, and Trends

The development of women’s higher education in China can be divided into four stages:emergence(1908-1948);foundation(1949-1976);accelerating development(1977-2008);and the qualitative leap(2009-2020).This work considers the principal institutional mechanisms that contributed to this development.First,flexibly planned parenthood gradually promoted gender equality and openness in society facilitated by systematic“awards,grants,and loans”initiatives to support women’s higher education economically.Second,compulsory education ensured that left-out and migrant children had access to higher education.Third,effective connectivity across different education types bridged education gaps between those with different levels of education.Fourth,China made great efforts to invite and integrate international experiences that promoted the development of women’s higher education.Looking beyond these achievements,we also discuss the future trends of women’s higher education in China.

Equity in Higher Education Opportunities in China

Higher education has been developing rapidly since China implemented reforms and opening up policy.However,limitation of the government’s financial resources investment,regional development,and other factors has resulted in unfair higher education opportunities.Therefore,this study uses archival research method to analyze and study the general situation of higher education,college entrance examination system,and equity of higher education opportunities other issues in China.This study explains the connotation of equity of education and higher education opportunities,and conducts in-depth analysis of equity of higher education opportunities in starting point,process,and results.It focuses on analyzing the factors that influence the equity of higher education opportunities in China.It also analyzes the status quo and problems of equity of higher education opportunities in China.Aiming at solving these problems,this study proposes recommendations from four aspects.

Reflection on the Quality and Equity of Chinese Basic Education--From PISA 2018 Results: Where All Students Can Succeed

PISA 2018 Results:Where All Students Can Succeed analyzes students’academic performance and wellbeing from the social background of students and schools.It shows that the influence of socio-economic status on the academic performance of students in Beijing,Shanghai,Jiangsu and Zhejiang(China)(hereafter“B-S-J-Z[China]”)is relatively low,but disadvantaged students receive insufficient support from school;socio-economic segregation between schools in B-S-J-Z(China)affects students’academic performance and expectations for the future;the shortage of quality teachers in B-S-J-Z(China)is serious,but the teaching resources are sufficient.According to PISA 2018,China should promote balanced development among schools,strengthen teachers’education,adhere to curriculum and teaching reform,so as to promote education equity and improve education quality.

An Analysis of the Role of Higher Education Opportunity Expansion in Social Stratification

With higher education entering the public’s vision,the expansion of higher education opportunities has gradually become a hot topic.The lower class is eager to achieve class mobility through this opportunity,while the upper class firmly grasps the few high-quality places in higher education.What role will the expansion of higher education opportunities plays in the overall social stratification?This paper discusses the impact of the expansion of higher education opportunities on social stratification from the upper class and the lower class.

Who Is More Likely to Participate in Private Tutoring and Does It Work?:Evidence from PISA(2015)

Purpose-In recent years,private tutoring has become increasingly prevalent in China and has become both a dominant way for students to learn after school and a major component of family educational expenditure.This paper aims to analyze the factors that affect Chinese students’participation in private tutoring and the effectiveness of private tutoring.Design/Approach/Methods-We use data from the Programme for International Student Assessment(PISA)2015 of China's Mainland area and focus specifically on science-related private tutoring.Multilevel logistic model and hierarchical linear model based on coarsened exact matching(CEM)are used to conduct the investigations.Findings-Empirical results show that individual level factors including student’s interest in science,educational expectations,and school-level factors such as school autonomy,science-related learning resources and school size pose a significant influence on the likelihood of participation in private tutoring.Moreover,science-related private tutoring has not significantly improved the overall scientific literacy scores of students.In addition,private tutoring has widened the performance gap among students from different socioeconomic backgrounds,with students from socioeconomically advantaged family experiencing more significant gains from tutoring.Originality/Value-These findings suggest that providing free high-quality tutoring to students from disadvantaged families might be an effective way of promoting educational equity.
