The surface modification on the AA6082 Al?Mg?Si aging-hardenable aluminum alloy was investigated by electricaldischarge alloying (EDA) process. Kerosene, used as a dielectric fluid, was pyrolytically decomposed into carbon for the formationof a self-lubricated carbide layer on the aluminum alloy surface during EDA process. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM)image found that the self-lubricated carbide layer was a multi-phase material with carbides and graphite. As a result, theEDA-modified aluminum alloy had a negligible wear rate of ~2?10?4 mg/m (c. f. ~1.1?10?2 mg/m for aluminum alloy substrate).Notably, a new characteristic was found that the EDA-processed carbide layer was a soft magnet, which improved theelectromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performance of the alloy. 展开更多

Zn-5wt% Al eutectic alloy was directionally solidified with different growth rates (5.32-250.0μm/s) at a constant temperature gradient of 8.50 K/mm using a Bridgman-type growth apparatus. The values of eutectic spacing were measured from transverse sections of the samples. The dependences of the eutectic spacing and undercooling on growth rate are determined as λ=9.21V-0.53 and ΔT=0.0245V0.53,respectively.The results obtained in this work were compared with the Jackson-Hunt eutectic theory and the similar experimental results in the literature.Microhardness of directionally solidified samples was also measured by using a microhardness test device. The dependency of the microhardness on growth rate is found as Hv=115.64V0.13.Afterwards,the electrical resistivity (r) of the casting alloy changes from 40×10-9 to 108×10-9 Ω·m with the temperature rising in the range of 300-630 K.The enthalpy of fusion (ΔH) and specific heat (Cp) for the Zn-Al eutectic alloy are calculated to be 113.37 J/g and 0.309 J/(g·K),respectively by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) from heating trace during the transformation from liquid to solid. 展开更多

The influences of rare earth elements(cerium and lanthanum) on the microstructure and phases of Al-3.0 wt%Mg alloys used for electromagnetic shielding wire were characterized by scanning electron microscopy(SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy(EDS), X-ray diffraction(XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry(DSC). The mechanical properties and electrical resistivity were also investigated. The results indicated that a certain content of rare earth could improve the purification of the aluminum molten, enhance the strength, and reduce the electrical resistivity of Al-3.0 wt%Mg alloys. The strength reached the top value when RE content was 0.3 wt% while the alloy with 0.2 wt% RE addition had the smallest electrical resistivity. The elongation varied little when RE addition was no more than 0.2 wt%. But the excessive addition of rare earth would be harmful to the microstructure and properties of Al-3.0 wt%Mg alloys. 展开更多

Ductility and electrical conductivity of metallic materials are inversely correlated with their strength, resulting in a difficulty of optimizing all three simultaneously. We design an Al-Sc-Zr-based alloy using semisolid extrusion to yield a good trade-off between strength and ductility along with excellent electrical conductivity. The Al-0.35Sc-0.2Zr wire with a diameter of 3 mm exhibited the best combined properties: a tensile strength of 210 ± 2 MPa, elongation of 7.6% ± 0.5%, and an electrical conductivity of 34.9 ± 0.05 MS/m. The average particle size of nanosized Al3(Sc, Zr) precipitates increased from 6.5 ± 0.5 nm to 25.0 ± 0.5 nm as the aging time increased from 1 h to 96 h at 380 °C, accompanied by the corresponding volume fraction variation from(6.2 ± 0.1) × 10^(-4) to(3.7 ± 0.1) × 10^(-3). As proved by transmission electron microscopy observation, the high strength originates from the effective blockage of dislocation motion by numerous nanosized Al3(Sc, Zr) precipitates whilst both electrical conductivity and ductility remain at a high level due to the coherent precipitates possessing an extremely low electrical resistivity. 展开更多

The effects of electric field on the evolution of excess quenched-in vacancy as well as solute clustering in Al-4wt%Cu alloy, and on the vacancy migration and formation enthalpy of pure aluminum were investigated, using positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy, high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, hardness measurement and four-probe electrical resistivity measurement. The results showed that the electric field improved age hardening response obviously and postponed the decay of excess vacancies for 30rain during the early stage ageing of Al-4wt%Cu alloy. A large number of 2-4nm GP zones with dense distribution were observed after 1 min ageing with an electric field applied. The electric field-assisted-aged sample owned a lower coarsening rate of GP zone, which was about three fifths of that in the aged sample without an electric field, from 1 min to 120 rain ageing. The electric field contributed 8% increase of the vacancy migration enthalpy (0.663 ±0.021 eV) of pure Al, comparing with that (0.611 ±0.023 eV) of pure Al without an electric field. The increase of vacancy migration enthalpy, induced by the electric field, was responsible for the difference on evolution of quenched-in vacancy, rapid solute clustering and age hardening improvement during the early stage ageing of Al-4wt%Cu alloy. 展开更多

Actively cooled thermal protection system has great influence on the engine of a hypersonic vehicle, and it is significant to obtain the thermal and stress distribution in the system. So an analytic estimation and numerical modeling are performed in this paper to investigate the behavior of an actively cooled thermal protection system. The analytic estimation is based on the electric analogy method and finite element analysis(FEA) is applied to the numerical simulation. Temperature and stress distributions are obtained for the actively cooled channel walls with three kinds of nickel alloys with or with no thermal barrier coating(TBC). The temperature of the channel wall with coating has no obvious difference from the one with no coating, but the stress with coating on the channel wall is much smaller than that with no coating. Inconel X-750 has the best characteristics among the three Ni-based materials due to its higher thermal conductivity, lower elasticity module and greater allowable stress. Analytic estimation and numerical modeling results are compared with each other and a reasonable agreement is obtained. 展开更多

Cu-0.45 Cr-0.2 Zr-xLa(x = 0-0.48) alloys were prepared by vacuum casting. The effects of La addition and orientation on the microstructure and properties of the as-cast alloy were investigated by an optical microscope, a scanning electron microscope with an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer, a tensile testing machine and an electrical conductivity tester. The result shows that the addition of La significantly refines the columnar grainsize and decreases the secondary dendrite arm spacing. Trace addition of La improves the room temperature ultimate tensile strength, elongation and electrical conductivity mainly by purifying during melting and casting. The ultimate tensile strength, elongation and electrical conductivity significantly decrease with the increase of La content due to formation of coarse particles and oxides, which severely harm the performance of the Cu-0.45 Cr-0.2 Zr-xLa alloys. The Cu-0.45 Cr-0.2 Zr-0.13 La alloy possesses a good combination of room temperature ultimate tensile strength, elongation and electrical conductivity. In addition, room temperature ultimate tensile strength and electrical conductivity along transverse direction of the ingot are higher than that along longitudinal direction, which is mainly ascribed to different distribution of grain boundary and grain orientation. 展开更多

In this paper, the evolutions of microstructure and mechanical properties of Cu-l.9Be-0.3Ni-0.15Co alloy were studied. The alloys in the condition of the solution treated(soft state) and 37% cold rolled(hard state) were aged at 320 ℃for different time, respectively. The mechanical properties, electrical conductivity and microstructure of the alloy aged for different time were analyzed.Additionally, the precipitation kinetics of Cu-1.9Be-0.3Ni-0.15Co alloys was investigated.X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy results reveal that both continuous precipitation and discontinuous precipitation existed in the hard-state Cu-l.9Be-0.3Ni-0.15Co alloy during the whole aging process;the sequence of continuous precipitation is G.P.zone →γ″→γ′→γ.Furthermore, the precipitation transformation mechanism of softstate alloy is homogeneous nucleation, while hard-state alloy shows the heterogeneous nucleation(interface nucleation)with the nucleation rate of both states decaying rapidly to zero during aging at 320 ℃. 展开更多
