To investigate the factors affecting the quality of solder joints which would be available for the practical production,an axisymmetric finite element model of the resistance spot welding process simulated by Sysweld finite element software was established for a DP980 steel plate with a thickness of 1 mm.By simulating the formation process of spot welding nuggets,the distribution characteristics of temperature field and stress field in the process of spot welding heating and cooling can be studied to determine the nugget diameter and shear strength index.The results showed that the shear force of the spot-welding joint was affected by the structure,and the nugget diameter was non-linear relationship to the shear performance.For the DP980 spot welding joint,the critical nugget diameter of the IF fracture mode to PF fracture mode was 4.695 mm,and the maximum value of nugget diameter and residual stress decreased to different degrees with the increase of welding pressure. 展开更多

The plasma arc/anode interface and the melt/solid interface are treated specially, the VOF method is used to trace the moving keyhole wall, and the fluid flow and heat transfer in both the plasma arc and weld pool are numerically simulated. The distributions of current density and arc pressure on the weld pool surface during the keyhole formation process are analyzed using the coupled model. The predicted arc pressure and current density are compared with the experimentally measured results, and both are in good agreement. 展开更多

The interfacial bonding of Ag-Cu (they are limited soluble) formed by the technology of cold pressure welding was discussed from the point of metallurgic view in this paper. Meanwhile, tensile test and microscopic test were adopted for studying the state of interfacial bonding, suggesting that the joint of Ag-Cu has not only strong welding joint but also atomic diffusion on the interface. For Ag-Cu, the interaction of dislocation caused by plastic deformation will cause the strain and the vibration of microconstructer defects, accompanied by emitting energy. The energy increases the atomic action and the amplitude of atomic vibration, and the result is that the atom can diffuse to several lattice parameters deep from interface to inner metals. Therefore, under the condition of chemical potential gradient, the special technique, cold pressure welding rather than basic requirements of diffusion should be taken into account. During the cold pressure welding, plastic deformation plays an important role for it causes the metals′ displacement, crystal defects, further activates the surface atoms. Finally, the fracture of atomic bonding leads to the atomic exchange and diffusion between the new metals′ surfaces.In other words the metals Ag,Cu can achieve solidate bonding by cold pressure welding accompanied by the atomic diffusion. Moreover, theoretical analysis and calculation on the basis of thermodynamics, crystallogy, so- lid physics,etc, have been applied to calculate the amount of atomic diffusion, which has further proved the testing results that joint Ag-Cu has strong bonding strength through the mechanism of atomic diffusion. 展开更多

Surface tension and buoyancy were considered to calculate liquid metal flow patter, moreover, typical phenomena of MIG welding, such as filler droplets impinging weld pool, electromagnetic force in the weld pool, and typical phenomena of laser beam welding, such as recoil pressure, Inverse Bremsstrahlung absorption, Fresnel absorption were all considered in the model. The laser beam and arc couple effect were introduced into this model by the plasma width during hybrid welding. The role of recoil pressure in the weld formation was discussed. Transient weld pool shape and complicated liquid metal velocity distribution from two kinds weld pool to an unified weld pool were calculated. The distribution of arc pressure is studied, under conditions as radiation distance, which is the distance between the ultrasonic horn tip and workpiece, and welding current. The values of arc pressure generally increase as the current increases. Other experimental phenomena are also accounted for in detail in this paper. Many processes are used to join reinforcing bar (steel bar), but only a few of them, e.g. overlapping welding, gas pressure welding, thread joining, cold pressure sleeve joining, are able to be used on building sites because the conditions of building sites are very particular. First, the work of joining reinforcing bar is mobile, that is to say, it must be moved from one place to another after having accomplished one joint. So it demands that the welding equipment (especially the welding head) must be convenient for moving. So it must be small and light. Second, the electricity capacity of the welding equipment can not be too large because the whole electricity capacity of a building site is limited. Third, the welding process ought to be simple because the situation og building sites is very poor and is on the open air. The more complex the process is, the more difficult the work will be. Fourth, the quality of the joint should be reliable and stable because it is impossible to check the quality of every joint, and there is no suitable way to do it even by now. For those reasons, the electroslag pressure butt welding has got great development recent years and is just suitable to be used on building sites to join vertical reinforcing bars. Many research results have revealed that vaporization pressure has important effects on the formation of the keyhole and molten pool during laser welding. In this paper, based on law of conservation of energy, an innovative physical model is found to calculate the vaporization pressure during laser welding. In this model, vaporization pressure can be calculated according to some characteristics of the spatter particle. These features include the size, velocity and displacement. They can be measured through images taken by high-speed camera. The periods of this pressure also measured by counting opening and closing time of the bottom keyholes. At this welding condition, the typical vaporization pressure is about 20 203 Pa and the period is about 6. 9 ms. The average opening time of bottom keyholes is about 4. 3 ms, and the closing time is about 2. 6 ms. 展开更多

The properties of interface have important effect on the whole welded joint, even decide directly the interfacial bonding strength. The bonding strength of metals in cold pressure welding such as Ag Ni (they are hardly mutual soluble) and Ag Cu(they are limited soluble) are discussed in this paper. The results of the tensile test suggest that two kinds of welded joints have enough strength to satisfy with the demand for being used. Moreover, thermodynamics, crystal logy, physics and metal electronic microscopic analysis etc are adopted to further calculate the bonding strength. The results of test and theoretical analyses prove that Ag Ni, Ag Cu, especially, for Ag Ni can form strong welded joint which is higher than that of the relative soft base metals in cold pressure welding. 展开更多

The tensile test of the joint concludes that the bonding strength of Ag,Ni in cold pressure welding is strong enough to satisfy the demand of application, while the value of bonding strength is larger than that of Ag base. The conclusions further signify that the metals(hardly being mutual soluble) can be welded, and supply extremely important references to the further study either on test or theory for the weldability of different metals. The theoretical analysis and calculations of the bonding strength were made on the base of thermodynamics, crystallography, solid physics etc. Moreover, by means of microscopic test and analysis, especially drawing support from the research of Al Pb, this strong bonding mainly depends on the mechanical bonding power and metal atomic linkage, but not on the atomic diffusion. 展开更多

Effects of the weld microstructure and inclusions on brittle fracture initiation are investigated in a thermally aged ferritic high-nickel weld of a reactor pressure vessel head from a decommissioned nuclear power plant.As-welded and reheated regions mainly consist of acicular and polygonal ferrite,respectively.Fractographic examination of Charpy V-notch impact toughness specimens reveals large inclusions(0.5-2.5μm)at the brittle fracture primary initiation sites.High impact energies were measured for the specimens in which brittle fracture was initiated from a small inclusion or an inclusion away from the V-notch.The density,geometry,and chemical composition of the primary initiation inclusions were investigated.A brittle fracture crack initiates as a microcrack either within the multiphase oxide inclusions or from the debonded interfaces between the uncracked inclusions and weld metal matrix.Primary fracture sites can be determined in all the specimens tested in the lower part of the transition curve at and below the 41-J reference impact toughness energy but not above the mentioned value because of the changes in the fracture mechanism and resulting changes in the fracture appearance. 展开更多

The technology of cold pressure welding was adopted to achieve the bonding of Al/Cu(limited soluble and forming compounds), Ag/Ni (hardly mutual soluble), and the relative state of interface was tested by HREM. The results indicate that stable interface is always corresponding to the low interfacial energy value; the stable interface is not coherent but partly-coherent because of the twisting of grain boundary caused by pressure, meanwhile existing dislocation. Namely, the interfacial match and other states under the condition of cold pressure welding are different from the situation that under the condition of thermal action. Moreover, theoretical analyses and calculation on the base of thermodynamics, crystallogeny, solid physics etc, were discussed. 展开更多

Magnetically impelled arc butt(MIAB) welding is a pressure welding process used for joining of pipes and tubes with an external magnetic field affecting arc rotation along the tube circumference. In this work, MIAB welding of low alloy steel(T11) tubes were carried out to study the microstructural changes occurring in thermo-mechanically affected zone(TMAZ). To qualify the process for the welding applications where pressure could be up to 300 bar, the MIAB welds are studied with variations of arc current and arc rotation time. It is found that TMAZ shows higher hardness than that in base metal and displays higher weld tensile strength and ductility due to bainitic transformation. The effect of arc current on the weld interface is also detailed and is found to be defect free at higher values of arc currents. The results reveal that MIAB welded samples exhibits good structural property correlation for high pressure applications with an added benefit of enhanced productivity at lower cost.The study will enable the use of MIAB welding for high pressure applications in power and defence sectors. 展开更多

In this paper, a way of ultrasonic assisted TIG welding is introduced. By directly imposed ultrasonic vibration on welding arc, the vibration interacts with arc plasma and passes to the weld pool. Measurement results show that arc pressure is significantly increased with the ultrasonic vibration and the arc pressure distribution models are changed. Bead-on-plate welding tests on SUS304 confirm that this technology can influence the style of metal melting and increase weld penetration depth. 展开更多

There are four new achievements of this work on the theory and technology of explosive welding.(1) It has been found and defined three kinds of bonding interfaces: big wavy, small wavy and micro wavy, and the micro wavy interface is the best. In a cladding plate, it is for the first time to find that the form of interface presents regular distribution.(2) Although the interface has the features of melt, diffusion and pressure welding in the mean time, the seam and 'hole' brought by the melt weaken the bonding strength of interface greatly, and the effect of melt on interface must be eliminated in explosive welding, so explosive welding is not a melt weld. The diffusion welding is a kind of form of pressure welding, and the diffusion is not the reason of the bonding of interface but the result of interface high pressure. So the diffusion welding cannot also explain the bonding mechanism of it. The experiment and theory make clear that explosive welding is a special pressure one.(3) To get good interface of no melt, explosive charge must be selected on the low limit of welding windows. In explosive welding, the drive plate should be treated as the viscous and plastoelastic body, not incompressible fluid. The bending moment under the explosive welding loading must be greater than that under dynamic limit of drive plate. According to the condition, the lower limit of explosive welding is obtained. It is about 20% less than that obtained by tradition calculation, and suitable for engineering application.(4) It is for the first time to test and study on soil anvil characteristics and change regularity under explosive welding impact loading. Through soil anvil parameter optimization analysis, it is the best for explosive welding with sandy soil of water content 17.00% and density 1.74q/cm3. 展开更多

This method differs from the conventional TIG method, it places two electrodes insulated from each other in the same welding torch, and a coupling arc is generated from the two electrodes. The coupling arc pressure was measured and preliminary welding experiment was made. The results show that the coupling arc can keep arc pressure at a low level compared with conventional TIG arc, and welding can be achieved under higher current and high travel speed with sound appearance of weld. A two-dimensional mathematical model based on volume-of-fluid method is proposed to investigate the heat transfer,fluidflow and keyhole dynamics during electron beam welding(EBW)on20mm-thick2219aluminum alloy plate.In the model,anadaptive heat source model tracking keyhole depth is employed to simulate the heating process of electron beam.Heat and masstransport of different vortexes induced by surface tension,thermo-capillary force,recoil pressure,hydrostatic pressure and thermalbuoyancy is coupled with keyhole evolution.A series of physical phenomena involving keyhole drilling,collapse,reopening,quasi-stability,backfilling and the coupled thermal field are analyzed systematically.The results indicate that the decreased heat fluxof beam in depth can decelerate the keyholing velocity of recoil pressure and promote the quasi-steady state.Before and close to thisstate,the keyhole collapses and complicates the fluid transport of vortexes.Finally,all simulation results are validated againstexperiments. 展开更多

Gas pool coupled activating TIG(GPCA?TIG) welding put forward in?house can dramatically enhance weld penetration of TIG welding through introducing active element oxygen to reverse the Marangoni convection flow in the molten pool. In order to further improve the welding productivity, the normal solid tungsten electrode is replaced by a kind of coupling arc electrode. The changes of arc pressure distribution along anode surface and the weld appearance were evaluated. On this basis, the dependences of weld shape characterized with weld depth, width and undercut on the main welding parameters were discussed. The results indicate, the substitution of coupling arc electrode can lead to an obvious decrease of arc pressure. Compared to hollow tungsten electrode and twin tungsten electrodes, the coupling arc electrode is much easier to manufacture and has more compacter structure. Combined with the symmetric distribution of arc pressure in di erent directions, this electrode has extensive adaptability. In the GPCA?TIG welding with coupling arc electrode, both the substitution of coupling arc electrode and the introduction of outer active gas oxygen can reduce the possibilities of producing humping bead and undercut. This study investigates the interaction and influence of surface cracks on the spherical pressure hull of a deep-sea manned submersible.The finite element model of the spherical hull is established,and a semi-elliptical surface crack is inserted in the welding toe of the spherical hull as the main crack.Considering the combined effect of external uniform pressure and welding residual stress at the weld toe,the stress intensity factor(SIF)is obtained based on the M-integral method.Inserting disturbing cracks at different positions on the spherical hull surface,the interaction and influence between multi-cracks are revealed by numerical calculation.The results show that the existence of the disturbing crack has a great influence on the stress intensity factor of the main crack,and the influence is different with the different location of disturbing crack.The study of the interaction of multiple cracks under different interference factors and the influence of disturbing cracks on the main crack can provide some reference for future engineering applications. 展开更多
