Cyclo[18]carbon has received considerable attention thanks to its novel geometric configuration and special electronic structure.Superalkalis have low ionization energy.Doping a superalkali in cyclo[18]carbon is an effective method to improve the optical properties of the system because considerable electron transfer occurs. In this paper, the geometry, bonding properties, electronic structure, absorption spectrum, and nonlinear optical(NLO)properties of superalkaline M_(3)O(M=Li,Na)-doped cyclo[18]carbon were studied by using density functional theory.M_(3)O and the C_(18) rings are not coplanar. The C_(18) ring still exhibits alternating long and short bonds. The charge transfer between M_(3)O and C_(18) forms stable[M_(3)O]+[C_(18)]-ionic complexes.C_(18)M_(3)O(M=Li,Na)shows striking optical nonlinearity,i.e.,their first-and second-order hyperpolarizability(βvec andγ||)increase considerably atλ=1907 nm and 1460 nm. 展开更多

The first-principles calculations are performed to examine structural, mechanical, and electronic properties at large strain for a monolayer C_(4)N_(4),which has been predicted as an anchoring promising material to attenuate shuttle effect in Li–S batteries stemming from its large absorption energy and low diffusion energy barrier. Our results show that the ideal strengths of C_(4)N_(4)under tension and pure shear deformation conditions reach 13.9 GPa and 12.5 GPa when the strains are 0.07 and 0.28,respectively.The folded five-membered rings and diverse bonding modes between carbon and nitrogen atoms enhance the ability to resist plastic deformation of C_(4)N_(4).The orderly bond-rearranging behaviors under the weak tensile loading path along the[100]direction cause the impressive semiconductor–metal transition and inverse semiconductor–metal transition. The present results enrich the knowledge of the structure and electronic properties of C_(4)N_(4)under deformations and shed light on exploring other two-dimensional materials under diverse loading conditions. 展开更多

Structural, electronic and optical properties of Sc-based aluminum-nitride alloy have been carried out with first-principles methods using both local density approximation (LDA) and Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof (HSE) hybrid functional. This latter provides a more accurate description of the lattice parameters, enthalpy of formation, electronic and optical properties of our alloy than standard DFT. We found the transition from wurtzite to rocksalt structures at 61% of Sc concentration. By increasing the scandium concentration, the lattice parameters and the band gap decrease. The HSE band gap is in good agreement with available experimental data. The existence of the strong hybridization between Sc 3d and N 2p indicates the transport of electrons from Sc to N atoms. Besides, it is shown that the insertion of the Sc atom leads to the redshift of the optical absorption edge. The optical absorption of ScxAl1-xN is found to decrease with increasing Sc concentrations in the low energy range. Because of this, ScxAl1-xN have a great potential for applications in photovoltaics and photocatalysis. 展开更多

CaO–SiO_(2)compounds compromise one of the most common series of oxide particles in liquid steels, which could significantly affect the service performance of the steels as crack initiation sites. However, the structural, electronic, and mechanical properties of the compounds in CaO–SiO_(2)system are still not fully clarified due to the difficulties in the experiments. In this study, a thorough investigation of these properties of CaO–SiO_(2)compound particles in steels was conducted based on first-principles density functional theory. Corresponding phases were determined by thermodynamic calculation, including gamma dicalcium silicate(γ-C2S), alpha-prime(L) dicalcium silicate(αL′-C2S), alpha-prime(H) dicalcium silicate(αH′-C2S), alpha dicalcium silicate(α-C2S), rankinite(C3S2), hatrurite(C3S), wollastonite(CS), and pseudowollastonite(Ps-CS). The results showed that the calculated crystal structures of the eight phases agree well with the experimental results. All the eight phases are stable according to the calculated formation energies, and γ-C2S is the most stable. O atom contributes the most to the reactivity of these phases. The Young’s modulus of the eight phases is in the range of 100.63–132.04 GPa. Poisson’s ratio is in the range of0.249–0.281. This study provided further understanding concerning the CaO–SiO_(2)compound particles in steels and fulfilled the corresponding property database, paving the way for inclusion engineering and design in terms of fracture-resistant steels. 展开更多

Bimetallic clusters have aroused tremendous interest because the property changes like structure, size, and composition have occurred.Herein,a structural search of the global minimum for anionic LiMg_(n)^(-)(n=2-11) clusters is performed using an efficient crystal structure analysis by particle swarm optimization(CALYPSO) structural searching program with subsequent density functional theory(DFT) calculations.A great variety of low energetic isomers are converged, and the most stable ones are confirmed by comparing their total energy of each size.It is found that the LiMg_(n)^(-)clusters are structurally consistent with corresponding Mg clusters anions except for LiMg_(5)^(-)and LiMg_(7)^(-).In all the doped clusters, the Li atom prefers to occupy the convex position.Simulated photoelectron spectra(PES),Infrared(IR),and Raman spectra of LiMg_(n)^(-)could be used as an essential evidence for identifying cluster structures experimentally in the future.Stability study reveals that a tower-like structure of LiMg_(9)^(-)has prominent stability and can be identified as a magic number cluster. The reason might be that there are both closed-shell 1S^(2)1P^(6)1D^(10)2S^(2) electronic configurations and stronger Li-Mg bonds caused by sp hybridization in the LiMg_(9)^(-)cluster. 展开更多

Cubic protactinium hydrides are very important existing form in superconducting protactinium hydrogen series. In this work, the ground state structure and properties of cubic PaH3 have been studied using the DFT + U method. This systematic study for two bulk properties includes the electronic structures, phonon dispersion curves, structural, mechanical and thermodynamic properties under the effective coulomb U and exchange J PBE + U parameters. Structural relaxation results show that the Pa-H and Pa-Pa distances in α-PaH3 are significantly higher than that in β-PaH3, and the H-H distances in α-PaH3 are slightly smaller than that in β-PaH3. For the ground state electronic structures of α-PaH3 and β-PaH3, we found that α-PaH3 and β-PaH3 are metallic, and the protactinium 5f electronic states and hydrogen have obvious bonding effect, resulting in weakening of the material’s metallicity. This is consistent with observations for the other actinide hydrides such as ThH3 and UH3. The phonon spectrum calculations reveal that the PBE and PBE + U methods give quite different frequencies for the optical branches of phonons of α-PaH3 and β-PaH3. In addition, by including the vibrational entropy and the ZPE using the phonon frequencies obtained from the optimized unit cells we predict that the β-PaH3 phase can not transit into α-PaH3 phase above room temperature. 展开更多

By using the first-principles calculations, the electronic properties of graphene nanoribbon (GNR) doped by boron/nitrogen (B/N) bonded pair are investigated. It is found that B/N bonded pair tends to be doped at the edges of GNR and B/N pair doping in GNR is easier to carry out than single B doping and unbonded B/N co-doping in GNR. The electronic structure of GNR doped by B/N pair is very sensitive to doping site besides the ribbon width and chirality. Moreover, B/N pair doping can selectively adjust the energy gap of armchair GNR and can induce the semimetal-semiconductor transmission for zigzag GNR. This fact may lead to a possible method for energy band engineering of GNRs and benefit the design of graphene electronic device. 展开更多

The phase transition, elastic and electronic properties of three phases(phase Ⅰ,Ⅱ, and Ⅲ) of Sb_2Te_3 are investigated by using the generalized gradient approximation(GGA) with the PBESOL exchange–correlation functional in the framework of density-functional theory. Some basic physical parameters, such as lattice constants, bulk modulus, shear modulus,Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, acoustic velocity, and Debye temperature Θ are calculated. The obtained lattice parameters under various pressures are consistent with experimental data. Phase transition pressures are 9.4 GPa(Ⅰ→Ⅱ) and 14.1 GPa(Ⅱ→Ⅲ), which are in agreement with the experimental results. According to calculated elastic constants, we also discuss the ductile or brittle characters and elastic anisotropies of three phases. Phases Ⅰ and Ⅲ are brittle, while phaseⅡ is ductile. Of the three phases, phaseⅡ has the most serious degree of elastic anisotropy and phase Ⅲ has the slightest one. Finally, we investigate the partial densities of states(PDOSs) of three phases and find that the three phases possess some covalent features. 展开更多

The structural, electronic and magnetic properties of CrN under high pressure are investigated by first-principles calculations. The antiferromagnetic orthorhombic structure is identified to be the preferred ground state structure. It possesses a bulk modulus of 252.8 GPa and the nonzero magnetic moment of 2.33 μB per Cr ion, which agree well with the experimental results. CrN undergoes structural and magnetic transitions from an antiferromagnetic rocksalt structure to a non-magnetic Pnma phase at 132 GPa. Under compression, the magnetic moment of the Cr ion reduces rapidly near the equilibrium and phase transition point, and the distribution of the density of states is broadened, but the form of overlap between the orbitals of Cr d and N p remains unchanged. The broadening of the band induces spin flipping, which consequently results in the smaller magnetic moment of the Cr ion. 展开更多

The structural, electronic, and optical properties of cubic perovskite NaMgF3 are calculated by plane-wave pseudopo- tential density functional theory. The calculated lattice constant a0, bulk modulus B0, and the derivative of bulk modulus B~ are 3.872/~, 78.2 GPa, and 3.97, respectively. The results are in good agreement with the available experimental and theo- retical values. The electronic structure shows that cubic NaMgF3 is an indirect insulator with a wide forbidden band gap of Eg = 5.90 eV. The contribution of the different bands is analyzed by total and partial density of states curves. Population analysis of NaMgF3 indicates that there is strong ionic bonding in the MgF2 unit, and a mixture of ionic and weak covalent bonding in the NaF unit. Calculations of dielectric function, absorption coefficient, refractive index, electronic energy loss spectroscopy, optical reflectivity, and conductivity are also performed in the energy range 0 to 70 eV. 展开更多

This paper studies the equilibrium geometries and electronic properties of Ben and BenLi clusters, up to n=15, by using density-functional theory(DFT) at B3LYP/6-31G(d) level. The lowest-energy structures of Ben and BenLi clusters were determined. The results indicate that a single lithium impurity enhances the stability and chemical reactivity of the beryllium clusters. It finds that the geometries of the host clusters change significantly after the addition of the lithium atom for n ≥8. The lithium impurity prefers to be on the periphery of beryllium clusters, and occupies vertex sites. Both Be4Li, Be9Li, and Be13Li were found to be particularly stable with higher average binding energy, local peaks of second-order energy difference and fragmentation energies. For all the BenLi clusters studied, we found charge transfers from the Li to Be site and co-existence of covalent and metallic bonding characteristics. 展开更多

The electronic and optical properties of zincblende ZnX(X=S, Se, Te) and ZnX:Co are studied from density functional theory (DFT) based first principles calculations. The local crystal structure changes around the Co atoms in the lattice are studied after Co atoms are doped. It is shown that the Co-doped materials have smaller lattice constant (about 0.6%-0.9%). This is mainly due to the shortened Co-X bond length. The (partial) density of states (DOS) is calculated and differences between the pure and doped materials are studied. Results show that for the Co-doped materials, the valence bands are moving upward due to the existence of Co 3d electron states while the conductance bands are moving downward due to the reduced lattice constants. This results in the narrowed band gap of the doped materials. The complex dielectric indices and the absorption coefficients are calculated to examine the influences of the Co atoms on the optical properties. Results show that for the Co-doped materials, the absorption peaks in the high wavelength region are not as sharp and distinct as the undoped materials, and the absorption ranges are extended to even higher wavelength region. 展开更多

We show the results of first-principles calculations of structural, phonon, elastic, thermal and electronic properties of the Mg-X inter-metallics in their respective ground state phase and meta-stable phases at equilibrium geometry and the studied pressure range.Phonon dispersion spectra for these compounds were investigated by using the linear response technique. The phonon spectra do not show any abnormality in their respective ground state phase. The respective ground states phases of the studied system remain stable within the studied pressure range.Electronic and thermodynamic properties were derived by analysis of the electronic structures and quasi-harmonic approximation. The mixed bonding character of the Mg-X intermetallics is revealed by Mg-X bonds, and it leads the metallic nature. Most of the contribution originated from X ions d like states at Fermi level compared to that of Mg ion in these intermetallics. In this work,we also predicted the melting temperature of these intermetallics and evaluated the Debye temperature by using elastic constants. 展开更多

The electronic properties of hydrogen- and oxygen-terminated diamond surfaces exposed to the air are investigated by scanning probe microscopy (SPM). The results indicate that for the hydrogen-terminated diamond surface a shallow acceptor above the valence-band-maximum (VBM) appears in the band gap. However, the oxygen-terminated diamond film exhibits a high resistivity with a wide band gap. Based on the density-functional-theory, the densities of states, corresponding to molecular adsorbate in hydrogenated and oxygenated diamond (100) surfaces, are studied. The results show that the shallow acceptor in the band gap for the hydrogen-terminated diamond film can be attributed to the interaction between the surface C H bonding orbitals and the adsorbate molecules, while for the oxygen-terminated diamond film, the interaction between the surface C-O bonding orbitals and the adsorbate molecules can induce occupied states in the valence-band. 展开更多

Mechanical, electronic, and thermodynamic properties of zirconium carbide have been systematically studied using the ab initio calculations. The calculated equilibrium lattice parameter, bulk modulus, and elastic constants are all well consistent with the experimental data. The electronic band structure indicates that the mixture of C 2p and Zr 4d and 4p orbitals around the Fermi level makes a large covalent contribution to the chemical bonds between the C and Zr atoms. The Bader charge analysis suggests that there are about 1.71 electrons transferred from each Zr atom to its nearest C atom. Therefore, the Zr-C bond displays a mixed ionic/covalent character. The calculated phonon dispersions of ZrC are stable, coinciding with the experimental measurement. A drastic expansion in the volume of ZrC is seen with increasing temperature, while the bulk modulus decreases linearly. Based on the calculated phonon dispersion curves and within the quasi-harmonic approximation, the temperature dependence of the heat capacities is obtained, which gives a good description compared with the available experimental data. 展开更多

As a common impurity in 4 H silicon carbide(4 H-Si C),hydrogen(H)may play a role in tuning the electronic properties of 4 H-Si C.In this work,we systemically explore the effect of H on the electronic properties of both n-type and p-type4 H-Si C.The passivation of H on intrinsic defects such as carbon vacancies(V_(Si) )and silicon vacancies(V_(Si)) in 4 H-Si C is also evaluated. We find that interstitial H at the bonding center of the Si-C bond(H_(i)^(bc)) and interstitial H at the tetrahedral center of Si(H_(i)^(bc)) dominate the defect configurations of H in p-type and n-type 4 H-Si C,respectively. In n-type 4 H-Si C,the compensation of HSi-te iis found to pin the Fermi energy and hinder the increase of the electron concentration for highly N-doped 4 H-Si C.The compensation of Hbc iis negligible compared to that of V_(Si)on the p-type doping of Al-doped 4 H-Si C.We further examine whether H can passivate VCand improve the carrier lifetime in 4 H-Si C.It turns out that nonequilibrium passivation of VCby H is effective to eliminate the defect states of V_(Si),which enhances the carrier lifetime of moderately doped 4 H-Si C.Regarding the quantum-qubit applications of 4 H-Si C,we find that H can readily passivate V_(Si)during the creation of V_(Si)centers.Thermal annealing is needed to decompose the resulting V_(Si)-n H(n=1-4)complexes and promote the uniformity of the photoluminescence of V_(Si)arrays in 4 H-Si C.The current work may inspire the impurity engineering of H in 4 H-Si C. 展开更多

The mechanical, electronic and magnetic properties of non-magnetic MgTe and ferro-magnetic (FM) Mgo.75 TM025 Te (TM = Fe, Co, Ni) in the zinc-blende phase are studied by ab-initio calculations for the first time. We use the generalized gradient approximation functional for computing the structural stability, and mechanical properties, while the modified Becke and Johnson local (spin) density approximation (mBJLDA) is utilized for determining the electronic and magnetic properties. By comparing the energies of non-magnetic and FM calculations, we find that the compounds are stable in the FM phase, which is confirmed by their structural stabilities in terms of enthalpy of formation. Detailed descriptions of elastic properties of Mgo.75TMo.25Te alloys in the FM phase are also presented. For electronic properties, the spin- polarized electronic band structures and density of states are computed, showing that these compounds are direct bandgap materials with strong hybridizations of TM 3d states and Te p states. Further, the ferromagnetism is discussed in terms of the Zener free electron model, RKKY model and double exchange model. The charge density contours in the (110) plane are calculated to study bonding properties. The spin exchange splitting and crystal field splitting energies are also calculated. The distribution of electron spin density is employed in computing the magnetic moments appearing at the magnetic sites (Fe, Co, Ni), as well as at the non-magnetic sites (Mg, Te). It is found that the p-d hybridization causes not only magnetic moments on the magnetic sites but also induces negligibly small magnetic moments at the non-magnetic sites. 展开更多
