This study investigated the perceptions of English educators and supervisors in Jeddah Governorate regarding the process of teaching English to elementary students.A survey was conducted using a sample size of 94 educators and 10 supervisors. The data indicate that respondents considered English instruction at the elementary level essential for expanding kids’perspectives, improving academic performance, and promoting international involvement. The main advantages cited are the development of English language skills and the promotion of early education.Although not as easily noticeable, the disadvantages include potential negative impacts on an individual’s proficiency in Arabic and their sense of national identification. The highlighted challenges encompass insufficient teacher training, student reluctance towards English, limited resources, and school disparities. The proposed techniques focused on prioritizing English instructors’training, ensuring the use of appropriate content, utilizing technology, and promoting awareness of students and educators. The current research found different obstacles in teaching English at elementary stages. To overcome these obstacles,it will be essential to enhance teacher competencies, develop efficient teaching methods, get the backing of stakeholders, assign adequate resources, and carry out continuous evaluations.Further research can also contribute to a better understanding of how early English learning impacts on Arabic identity and proficiency. 展开更多

The recognition of the positive value of student diversity and their right to full participation are key aspects of inclusion as a means of managing heterogeneity of the school population from an equality perspective. As the school cannot welcome the diversity of children without including their families, the same logic needs to apply to the relationship between the school and parents, particularly in the current environment where the school-family partnership appears as a privileged institutional leverage in the fight against inequalities at school.Based on an ethnographical study exploring how the relationship between the school and the families builds up in a Swiss school located in a context of strong cultural diversity, this paper interrogates how the school norm can be the main limitation to the inclusion of students and parents who are unfamiliar with the school.Derived from field observations and interviews, our results show how the teachers tend to approach their relationship with new students and their parents from the standpoint of narrowly defined expected models, leading them to engage in a vain attempt to conform the students and parents when they deviate from these models. The possibility of entering the school system for students and parents unfamiliar with school is hindered by the exclusive and excluding normativity on which the models of the child and the parent expected by the teachers are grounded.Based on these observations,we discuss how an inclusive approach seems to us to require in the first place a necessary process of decentering from the school and teachers,as a condition for recognition of the actual child and parent. 展开更多

In the era of knowledge economy, education determines the competition of a nation. The United States is famous for its quality education around the world. However,in modern times, new challenges have emerged, especially in K-12 education.Although China highly emphasizes on education, due to its limitation of history and development, there are still many problems that need to be solved.Through the comparison of Chinese and American elementary education, the educational strategy can be refined based on different cultural contexts. It is particularly important to stress on gender issues in elementary education in terms of sociological value. The intangible gender bias still exists in other forms. In other words,it is crucial to create a learning environment with gender equality as a response to current gender issues. This study is mainly carried out by reviewing literatures, and the paper is divided into five parts. With a brief introduction of elementary education and gender consideration, this study compares the Chinese and American elementary education system and gender impact. Then, two research results,as a quantitative data, are discussed in this paper, reflecting how gender stereotypes influence elementary education. 展开更多

This study is a comparative research regarding English-only classes by native English speakers at the elementary schools in two countries, Korea and Taiwan. These two countries tried to introduce as well as adapt English education and policy toward globalization. First of all, the two initiated mandatory elementary English education and then acknowledged the significance of English CLT (Communication Language Teaching). Thus, curriculum and policy for English education based on globalization oriented to the introduction of English native speakers and English-only classes. Based on these situations, Korea created EPIK (English Program in Korea) and NEST (Native English Speaking Teacher) respectively for inviting English native teachers. In the similar educational conditions, the recognitions of elementary school students of Korea and Taiwan regarding on English-only classes by native English speakers showed the relatively meaningful results. Compared with Taiwan Residents students, first, Korean students have greater ability in understanding of English-only class. Second, Korean students respond that native English speaking teachers' class helps them improve English better. Third, Korean students tend to use Korean and English together to improve their understanding. Fourth, Korean students respond English-only class reduces fear about English. Fifth, Korean students experience less difficulties in communicating with native English speaking teachers due to culture differences. Korean elementary students relatively have a higher understanding rate about native English speaking teacher's class. 展开更多

Objective: Use a school-based food garden as an instrument to improve healthy dietary consumption, habits, and practices among children from the third to fifth grade in public schools in Chile. Design: Quasi-experimental, six-month intervention with an evaluation of dietary consumption, habits, and practices and use of the school-based food garden among the 3rd to 5th grade students. Setting: Two municipal schools in a low-middle income district in Santiago de Chile;one with a school garden intervention and a control school without a garden. Subjects: 155 third to fifth grade children, 63 in the intervention school and 92 in the control school (average age 10 years old, 58% boys). Results: In the intervened school, there was a significant improvement in the children’s dietary habits, such as peeling and slicing fruit (p < 0.05), making sandwiches (p < 0.05), and increased motivation to cook (p < 0.05). Fruit purchases at the school rose from 4% to 37% (p < 0.05) by the end of the intervention. Interest in growing vegetables or fruits at home increased from 48% to 70% (p < 0.05). The school children at the intervention school significantly increased their knowledge about 16 of 21 garden crops (p < 0.05), expanding the spectrum of the vegetables they can consume. There were no significant changes in the control school. Conclusions: The school-based food garden was effective in achieving change in dietary habits and practices among the third to fifth grade children. The project should be carried out for a longer period of time, so that the changes will be reflected in the students’ food consumption and nutritional status. 展开更多

This study presents comparisons regarding current elementary foreign language programs in China and the USA.The design features a comparative analysis approach combined with deductive thematic analysis to collect, analyze, and compare relevant data.Data were collected from samples such as governmental documents, organizational guidelines, national statistical reports, published scholarly works, audiovisual materials, and textbooks.Preceding the research, primary categories were identified, used to group data, and then look for similarities and differences.Categories for comparison were:(a)program types,(b)curriculum standards,(c)instructional methods, and(d)assessments. Results indicated US programs could benefit from consistency, widespread support and demand,state-to-state organization and/or alignment, equitable teaching materials, and attention to all student populations.China's program, while organized, could benefit from more authentic,real-life-context,other-culture-oriented practices, flexibility, and deeper, genuine information about English-speaking countries’cultures. This research contributes to scholarly conversations regarding comparisons of elementary foreign language teaching in China and the USA,while also supporting worldwide comparisons and exchange of ideas. 展开更多
