After the illustration of the development of Western urban planning theory during World War II, the definition of satellite city has been introduced in detail by taking the planning theory of satellite city as an example. The development of satellite city has been summarized, that is, "lying city-semi-detached satellite city-active satellite city"; their characters have been illustrated; then, the effective application of this theory in urban areas of London and Paris has been introduced. Finally, by taking Shanghai and Xi'an City for example, it has introduced the practical application of satellite city theory in modern urban planning of China, and concluded the function of satellite city in Chinese urban construction. It hopes to provide a reference for satellite urban planning theory guiding practice, so as to control and evacuate urban people scientifically, promote the functional orientation and spatial distribution balance of towns and cities, and finally facilitate the sustainable development of living environment.展开更多

Building on a specification of the world city network as a′interlocking network′in which business services firms play the crucial role in city network formation, information is gathered about the presence of global service firms in cities. This information is converted into data to provide the′service value′of a city for a firm′s provision of corporate services in a 526(cities)×175(firms) matrix. These data are then used as the input to the interlocking network model in order to measure cities′connectivity and its predominant geographical orientation. Here we focus on the position of some key Chinese cities in this regard, and discuss and interpret results in the context of the urban dimensions of the′opening up′of the Chinese economy.展开更多

The idea of sustainable urbanism is examined in this paper in more than environmental andecological aspects, to highlight the emergent forms of urbanism based on new paradigms that inform on the shape ofcities to come. The two case studies discussed embody complex topics of design, dwelling, community in space, buildingtechnologies, environmental strategies, as well as models of affordability. At the same time, new trajectories in thedevelopment of sustainable urban housing are explored. It is based on the following case studies:Case Study 1: The new city district of Vauban Freiburg, in Germany, describes the guiding principles and theirimplementation in the planning and design of this new major development: Vauban comprises 2,000 homes to house5,000 people, as well as business units to provide about 500 to 600 jobs.Case Study 2: solarCity Linz, in Austria, currently comprises about 1,300 homes and 3,000 inhabitants. It wasdesigned as a fl agship development for renewable energies in urban design and includes projects by architects likeFoster and Partners, Richard Rogers, and Thomas Herzog. Construction time of the nucleus of solarCity took placefrom 1995 to 2005.展开更多

As a wetland city, Shanghai city has various types of natural wetlands (chiefly, includes coastal, riverine, lacustrine, and reservoir and pond wetlands), which account for 23.5% of total areas. Meanwhile, Shanghai is a metropolitan city, being confronted with the pressure of port expansion and urban and industrial sprawl, just like the other megalopolises in the world. Based on our earlier study on estimating the ecological service values of wetlands in Shanghai, this paper analyzed the ecological functions of the wetland city, such as nutrient cycling, water regulation and supply, food supply, disturbance control, water treatment, habitats and refugia, aesthetic, education and culture, tidal flats and potential land resources. Unfortunately, the wetland function was being degraded and the ecosystem service was discounted accordingly because of over-reclamation, over-fishing, water pollution, and rapid urbanization in the city. It’s therefore recommended that, to improve the environment of Shanghai ciry, and make the ecosystems sustainable function appropriately, the effective wetland management strategies should be taken.展开更多

Based on identification of the concept of climate carrying capacity and analysis of the relationship among its influencing factors, this study established a comprehensive assessment indicator system of climate carrying capacity from aspects of the climate situation, the level of climate usage, and the development potential of cities. Taking Shanghai City as a case study, we developed a quantitative assessment model of climate carrying capacity. The climate carrying capacity and its influencing factors were analyzed and discussed in relation to the period 2004–2013. The results were as follows.(1) Current climate natural capacity indicator showed that the climatic situation of Shanghai City was inferior to its base climatic value and it had been in a state of fluctuation.(2) The climate stress and urban coordinated development capacity indicators increased steadily, but the growth rate of the urban coordinated development indicator was less than the growth rate of urban climate stress.(3) The climate carrying capacity was far lower than the benchmark value and it had been in a state of fluctuation mainly due to the effect of current climate situation.(4) According to a principal component analysis, seven factors of urban population density, per capita GDP, energy consumption per unit GDP, total industrial output value, investment in environment protection, spending on science and technology, and green area per capita were main influential factor of climate carrying capacity. It was proved that the proposed system for assessment of climate carrying capacity of a city was feasible. It can be used to describe the spatiotemporal changes of cities, and identify problems of regional climate carrying capacity associated with their development and function. This assessment system can provide a reference for the construction of an early warning system of climate carrying capacity for cities.展开更多
