New principles of work and energy as well as power and energy rate with cross terms for polar and nonlocal polar continuum field theories were presented and from them all corresponding equations of motion and boundary conditions as well as complete equations of energy and energy rate with the help of generalized Piola's theorems were naturally derived in all and without any additional requirement. Finally, some new balance laws of energy and energy rate for generalized continuum mechanics were established. A certain pattern of channel is the product of its self-adjustment under given boundary, discharge and sediment conditions. Based upon the principle of process-response model, an experimental study with 18 runs is carried out in LESRC. This paper is focused on the variation of the energy dissipation versus the channel morphology during and after the bedmaking process of braided channel. The results show that there exists a good empirical relationship between the energy dissipation rate and channel morphology. According to this relationship and the theory of minimum rate of energy dissipation, the authors explain the metamorphosis of the model channel with the development of the braided river. 展开更多

We propose that the brittle-ductile transition (BDT) controls the seismic cycle. In particular, the movements detected by space geodesy record the steady state deformation in the ductile lower crust, whereas the stick-slip behavior of the brittle upper crust is constrained by its larger friction. GPS data allow analyzing the strain rate along active plate boundaries. In all tectonic settings, we propose that earthquakes primarily occur along active fault segments characterized by relative minima of strain rate, segments which are locked or slowly creeping. We discuss regional examples where large earthquakes happened in areas of relative low strain rate. Regardless the tectonic style, the interseismic stress and strain pattern inverts during the coseismic stage. Where a dilated band formed during the interseismic stage, this will be shortened at the coseismic stage, and vice-versa what was previously shortened, it will be dilated. The interseismic energy accumulation and the coseismic expenditure rather depend on the tectonic setting (extensional, contractional, or strike-slip). The gravitational potential energy dominates along normal faults, whereas the elastic energy prevails for thrust earthquakes and performs work against the gravity force. The energy budget in strike-slip tectonic setting is also primarily due elastic energy. Therefore, precursors may be different as a function of the tectonic setting. In this model, with a given displacement, the magnitude of an earthquake results from the coseismic slip of the deformed volume above the BDT rather than only on the fault length, and it also depends on the fault kinematics. 展开更多

From a mechanical perspective, the vascular resistance at the artificially designed anastomosis causes an energy loss that affects blood flow rate growth and leads to early failure. This research studied how to maximize the RCAVF maturity and primary patency by controlling the energy loss rate. We theoretically analyzed and derived a model that evaluates the energy loss rate <em>E</em><em>avf</em> in RCAVF as a function of its blood vessel geometric parameters (GPs) for given flow rates. There was an aggregate of five controllable GPs in RCAVF: radial artery diameter (<em>D</em><em>ra</em>), cephalic vein diameter (<em>D</em><em>cv</em>), blood vessel distance between artery and vein (<em>h</em>), anastomotic diameter (<em>D</em><em>a</em>), and anastomotic angle (<em>θ</em>). Through this analysis, it was found that <em>E</em><em>avf</em> was inversely proportional to <em>D</em><em>ra</em>, <em>D</em><em>cv</em>, <em>D</em><em>a</em>, and <em>θ</em>, whereas proportional to <em>h</em>. Therefore, we recommended surgeons choose the vessels with large diameters, close distance, and increase the diameter and angle of the anastomosis to decrease the early failure of RCAVF. Simultaneously, we could explain the results of many clinical empiricisms with our formula. We found that increasing <em>D</em><em>cv</em> and <em>θ</em> was more significant in reducing <em>E</em><em>avf</em> than increasing <em>D</em><em>ra</em> and <em>D</em><em>a</em>. Based on our model, we could define two critical energy loss rates (<em>CEL</em><em>a</em>, <em>CEL</em><em>b</em>) to help surgeons evaluate the blood vessels and choose the ideal range of <em>θ</em>, and help them design the preoperative RCAVF plan for each patient to increase the maturity and the primary patency of RCAVF.</span> 展开更多

In the fracture problems of hydrophilic elastic materials under coupling effects of heat conduction, moisture diffusion and mechanical deformation, the conventional J-integral is no longer path independent. The value of J is unequal to the energy release rate in hygrothermal coupling cases. In the present paper, we derived a general form of the energy release rate for hygrothermal fracture problems of the hydrophilic elastic materials on the basis of energy balance equation in cracked areas. By introducing the constitutive relations and the essential equations of irreversible thermodynamics, a specific expression of the energy release rate was obtained, and the expression can be reformmulated as path independent integrals, which is equivalent to the energy release rate of the fracture body. The path independence of the integrals is then verified numerically. 展开更多

Excessive use of N fertilizer in intensive agriculture can increase crop yield and at the same time cause high carbon(C) emissions. This study was conducted to determine optimized N fertilizer application for high grain yield and lower C emissions in summer corn(Zea mays L.).A field experiment, including 0(N0), 75(N75), 150(N150), 225(N225), and 300(N300) kg N ha–1 treatments, was carried out during 2010–2012 in the North China Plain(NCP).The results showed that grain yield, input energy, greenhouse gas(GHG) emissions, and carbon footprint(CF) were all increased with the increase of N rate, except net energy yield(NEY).The treatment of N225 had the highest grain yield(10 364.7 kg ha–1) and NEY(6.8%), but the CF(0.25) was lower than that of N300, which indicates that a rate of 225 kg N ha–1 can be optimal for summer corn in NCP.Comparing GHG emision compontents, N fertilizer(0–51.1%) was the highest and followed by electricity for irrigation(19.73–49.35%).We conclude that optimazing N fertilizer application rate and reducing electricity for irrigation are the two key measures to increase crop yield, improve energy efficiency and decrease GHG emissions in corn production. 展开更多

Energy-absorbing rockbolts have been widely adopted in burst-prone excavation support, and their serviceability is closely related to the frequency and magnitude of seismic events. In this research, the splittube drop test with varying impact energy was conducted to reproduce the dynamic performance of MP1rockbolts under a wide range of seismic event magnitudes. The test results showed that the impact process could be subdivided into four distinct stages, i.e. mobilization, strain hardening, plastic flow(ductile), and rebound stage, of which strain hardening and plastic flow are the primary energy absorbing stages. As the impact energy per drop increases from 8.1 to 46.7 k J, the strain rate of the shank varies between 1.20 and 2.70 s^(-1), and the average impact load is between 240 and 270kN, which may be considered as constant. The MP1 rockbolt has a cumulative maximum energy absorption(CMEA) of 31.9–40.0 k J/m, with an average of 35.0 k J/m, and the elongation rate is 11.4%–14.7%, with an average of 12.7%, both of which are negatively correlated with the impact energy per drop. Regression analysis shows that energy absorption and shank elongation, as well as momentum input and impact duration, conform to the linear relationship. The complete dynamic capacity envelope of MP1 rockbolts is proposed, which reflects the dynamic bearing capacity, elongation, and distinct stages. This study is helpful to better understand the dynamic characteristics of energy-absorbing rockbolts and assist design engineers in robust reinforcement systems design to mitigate rockburst damage in seismically active underground excavations. 展开更多

In this paper, the postbuckling governing equations and the analytical expression of the energy release rates associated with delamination growth in a compression-loaded cylindrical shell are derived by using the variational principle of moving boundary and the Griffith fracture criterion. The finite difference method is used to generate the postbuckling solutions of the delaminated cylindrical shells, and with these solutions, the values of the energy release rates are determined. In simulational examples, the effects of a wide range of parameters, such as delamination sizes and depths, boundary conditions, geometrical parameters, material properties and laminate stacking sequences on the energy release rates of axisymmetrical laminated cylindrical shells are intensively discussed. 展开更多

An interface crack analysis is presented for further understanding the characteristics of the crack-tip field. The conditions under which the energy release rate components would exist are emphasized and the relations between energy release rate components and the stress intensity factors are given. Combining with the results of chasical plate theory analysis. a closed-form solution for stress intensity factors in terms of external loading as well as some geometric and material parameters for fairly general composite laminates is derived Then. an analytical solution for energy release rate components is deduced. In order to get energy release rate components under general loading condition. a mode mix parameter, Ω, must be determined separately. A methodology for determining Ω is discussed. Finally. several different kinds of laminates are examined and the results obtained could be used in engineering applications. 展开更多

A new extrapolation approach was proposed to calculate the strain energy release rates of complex cracks. The point_by_point closed method was used to calculate the closed energy, thus the disadvantage of self_inconsistency in some published papers can be avoided. The disadvantage is that the closed energy is repeatedly calculated: when closed nodal number along radial direction is more than two, the displacement of nodes behind the crack tip that is multiplied by nodal forces, the closed energy has been calculated and the crack surfaces have been closed, and that closed energy of middle point is calculated repeatedly. A DCB (double cantilever beam) specimen was calculated and compared with other theoretical results, it is shown that a better coincidence is obtained. In addition the same results are also obtained for compact tension specimen, three point bend specimen and single edge cracked specimen. In comparison with theoretical results, the error can be limited within 1 per cent. This method can be extended to analyze the fracture of composite laminates with various delamination cracks. 展开更多

A structure function approach is applied to estimate the turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) dissipation rate in the bottom boundary layer of the Pearl River Estuary (PRE). Simultaneous measurements with an acoustic Doppler velocimeter (ADV) supplied independent data for the verification of the structure function method. The results show that, 1) the structure function approach is reliable and successfully applied method to estimate the TKE dissipation rate. The observed dissipation rates range between 8.3 ×10^-4 W/kg and 4.9× 10^-6 W/kg in YM01 and between 3.4×10^-4 W/kg and 4.8×10^-7 W/kg in YM03, respectively, while exhibiting a strong quarter-diurnal variation. 2) The balance between the shear production and viscous dissipation is better achieved in the straight river. This first-order balance is significantly broken in the estuary by non-shear production/dissipation due to wave-induced fluctuations. 展开更多

Double cantilever beam tests were used to measure the energy release rates of linear vibrational welded moso bamboo joints. The influence of the length of the preserved cracks, the different combinations of the inner and outer bamboo surfaces and the moisture content is studied herein. The experimental compliance method, which is based on linear elastic fracture mechanics and has been shown to be an ideal method, was used to analyze data with the power equation. The results show that the preserved initial crack length does not have a significant effect on the final measured energy release rate, while the moso bamboo combination does affect the properties dramatically. The welded moso bamboo joints with inner-inner surfaces have the highest energy release rate of 122 J/m^2.The average energy release of the outer-outer combination was only 102 J/m^2.The expansion of the cracks also became easier when the moisture content of the welded joints was 18.5%compared to 4.5% and 10.1%.So the moisture resistance of the welded joints should be duly improved. 展开更多

The formulae of transformation between characteristic roots, coefficients of elastic compliances in non-principal directions of elasticity and corresponding parameters in principal directions of elasticity are derived. More and more uncertain factors in power systems and more and more complex operation modes of power systems put forward higher requirements for online transient stability assessment methods. The traditional modeldriven methods have clear physical mechanisms and reliable evaluation results but the calculation process is time-consuming,while the data-driven methods have the strong fitting ability and fast calculation speed but the evaluation results lack interpretation. Therefore,it is a future development trend of transient stability assessment methods to combine these two kinds of methods. In this paper, the rate of change of the kinetic energy method is used to calculate the transient stability in the model-driven stage, and the support vector machine and extreme learning machine with different internal principles are respectively used to predict the transient stability in the data-driven stage. In order to quantify the credibility level of the data-driven methods, the credibility index of the output results is proposed. Then the switching function controlling whether the rate of change of the kinetic energy method is activated or not is established based on this index. Thus,a newparallel integratedmodel-driven and datadriven online transient stability assessment method is proposed. The accuracy, efficiency, and adaptability of the proposed method are verified by numerical examples. 展开更多

In order to investigate the fatigue performance of orthotropic anisotropic steel bridge decks, this study realizes the simulation of the welding process through elastic-plastic finite element theory,thermal-structural sequential coupling, and the birth-death element method. The simulated welding residual stresses are introduced into the multiscale finite element model of the bridge as the initial stress.Furthermore, the study explores the impact of residual stress on crack propagation in the fatigue-vulnerable components of the corroded steel box girder. The results indicate that fatigue cracks at the weld toe of the top deck, the weld root of the top deck, and the opening of the transverse diaphragm will not propagate under the action of a standard vehicle load. However, the inclusion of residual stress leads to the propagation of these cracks. When considering residual stress, the fatigue crack propagation paths at the weld toe of the transverse diaphragm and the U-rib weld toe align with those observed in actual bridges. In the absence of residual stress, the cracks at the toe of the transverse diaphragm with a 15%mass loss rate are categorized as type I cracks.Conversely, when residual stress is considered, these cracks become I-II composite cracks.Residual stress significantly alters the cumulative energy release rate of the three fracturemodes. Therefore, incorporating the influence of residual stress is essential when assessing the fatigue performance of corroded steel box girders in long-span bridges. 展开更多

As renewable energy continues to be integrated into the grid, energy storage has become a vital technique supporting power system development. To effectively promote the efficiency and economics of energy storage, centralized shared energy storage(SES)station with multiple energy storage batteries is developed to enable energy trading among a group of entities. In this paper,we propose the optimal operation with dynamic partitioning strategy for the centralized SES station, considering the day-ahead demands of large-scale renewable energy power plants. We implement a multi-entity cooperative optimization operation model based on Nash bargaining theory. This model is decomposed into two subproblems:the operation profit maximization problem with energy trading and the leasing payment bargaining problem. The distributed alternating direction multiplier method(ADMM)is employed to address the subproblems separately.Simulations reveal that the optimal operation with a dynamic partitioning strategy improves the tracking of planned output of renewable energy entities, enhances the actual utilization rate of energy storage, and increases the profits of each participating entity. The results confirm the practicality and effectiveness of the strategy. 展开更多
