The stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) threshold enhancement factor in a pure white noise linewidth broad- ening Yb-doped fiber amplifier (YDFA) with a short large mode area fiber is theoretically and experimentally studied. We demonstrate a 1064.08nm, 11.6 GHz finewidth, 1.5 k W output power YDFA with an SBS threshold enhancement of -57 (26 W SBS threshold with single frequency seed). The output beam is near-diffraction lim- ited with a beam quality factor elM2 = 1.15 and a slope efficiency of up to 87%. No SBS or stimulated Raman scattering effects are observed in the whole power range. Further power sealing is limited by the available pump power in our system. 展开更多

Coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering spectroscopy(CARS) is a well-known detecting tool in biosensing and nonlinear spectroscopy. It can provide a non-invasive alternative without the need for exogenous labels,while the enhancement factor for surface plasmon resonances(SPR) are extensively used to increase the local field close to the oscillators and which can obtain high enhancement. In this work, we investigate the enhancement factor of our structure for surface-enhanced coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering. The absorption spectrum of the structure has been studied, a wide range of absorption has been realized. The enhancement can be as high as 10^(16) over standard CARS. Our design is very useful for improving the enhancement factor of surface-enhanced coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering. 展开更多

Improving Heat Transfer in Parabolic Trough Solar Collectors by Magnetic Nanofluids

A parabolic trough solar collector(PTSC)converts solar radiation into thermal energy.However,low thermal efficiency of PTSC poses a hindrance to the deployment of solar thermal power plants.Thermal performance of PTSC is enhanced in this study by incorporating magnetic nanoparticles into the working fluid.The circular receiver pipe,with dimensions of 66 mm diameter,2 mm thickness,and 24 m length,is exposed to uniform temperature and velocity conditions.The working fluid,Therminol-66,is supplemented with Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles at concentrations ranging from 1%to 4%.The findings demonstrate that the inclusion of nanoparticles increases the convective heat transfer coefficient(HTC)of the PTSC,with higher nanoparticle volume fractions leading to greater heat transfer but increased pressure drop.The thermal enhancement factor(TEF)of the PTSC is positively affected by the volume fraction of nanoparticles,both with and without a magnetic field.Notably,the scenario with a 4%nanoparticle volume fraction and a magnetic field strength of 250 G exhibits the highest TEF,indicating superior thermal performance.These findings offer potential avenues for improving the efficiency of PTSCs in solar thermal plants by introducing magnetic nanoparticles into the working fluid. 展开更多

Experiments about heat transfer in the presence of a two-phase flow due to the condensation of a R1234yf refrigerant have been performed considering a smooth tube and two micro-fin tubes.The following experimental conditions have been considered:Condensation temperatures of 40℃,43℃ and 45℃,mass fluxes of 500–900 kg/(m^(2)·s),vapor qualities at the inlet and outlet of the heat transfer tube in the ranges 0.8–0.9 and 0.2–0.3,respectively.These tests have shown that:(1)The heat transfer coefficient increases with decreasing the condensation temperature and on increasing the mass flux;(2)The heat transfer coefficient inside the micro-fin tube is larger than that for the smooth tube;(3)The heat transfer enhancement factors for the micro-fin tube with a fin helical angle of 8°and 15°are 2.51–2.89 and 3.11–3.57,respectively;both are higher than the area increase ratio.These experimental results have been compared with correlations available in the literature:the Cavallini et al.correlation has the highest accuracy in predicting the heat transfer coefficient inside the smooth tube,the related percentage error and the average prediction error are±8%and 0.56%,respectively;for the micro-fin tube these become±25%and 6%,respectively. 展开更多

Aim: To identify proteins induced by androgen in Sertoli cells during spermatogenesis. Methods: We analyzed protein profiles in TM4 Sertoli cells treated with dihydrotestosterone (DHT) using surface enhanced laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (SELDI-TOF-MS). Results: We found increases in the expression of a 5.0-kDa protein at 15 min, an 11.3-kDa protein at 24 h and 4.3 kDa, 5.7 kDa, 5.8 kDa, 9.95 kDa and 9.98 kDa proteins at 48 h after the treatment. In contrast, the expression of 6.3 kDa and 8.6 kDa proteins decreased at 30 min, and 4.9 kDa, 5.0 kDa, 12.4 kDa and 19.8 kDa proteins at 48 h after the treatment. The ll.3-kDa protein was identified as macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) known to having various functions. The 9.98-kDa protein was identified as calgizzarin related to calcium channels. The timing of their expression suggests that MIF and calgizzarin are involved in late regulation of spermatogenesis in Sertoli cells by androgen. Conclusion: MIF and calgizzarin are two important androgen-responsive proteins produced by Sertoli cells and they might play a role in regulating spermatogenesis. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Heart diseases are the primary cause of death all over the world.Following myocardial infarction,billions of cells die,resulting in a huge loss of cardiac function.Stem cell-based therapies have appeared as a new area to support heart regeneration.The transcription factors GATA binding protein 4(GATA-4)and myocyte enhancer factor 2C(MEF2C)are considered prominent factors in the development of the cardiovascular system.AIM To explore the potential of GATA-4 and MEF2C for the cardiac differentiation of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells(hUC-MSCs).METHODS hUC-MSCs were characterized morphologically and immunologically by the presence of specific markers of MSCs via immunocytochemistry and flow cytometry,and by their potential to differentiate into osteocytes and adipocytes.hUC-MSCs were transfected with GATA-4,MEF2C,and their combination to direct the differentiation.Cardiac differentiation was confirmed by semiquant itative real-time polymerase chain reaction and immunocytochemistry.RESULTS hUC-MSCs expressed specific cell surface markers CD105,CD90,CD44,and vimentin but lack the expression of CD45.The transcription factors GATA-4 and MEF2C,and their combination induced differentiation in hUC-MSCs with significant expression of cardiac genes i.e.,GATA-4,MEF2C,NK2 homeobox 5(NKX2.5),MHC,and connexin-43,and cardiac proteins GATA-4,NKX2.5,cardiac troponin T,and connexin-43.CONCLUSION Transfection with GATA-4,MEF2C,and their combination effectively induces cardiac differentiation in hUC-MSCs.These genetically modified MSCs could be a promising treatment option for heart diseases in the future. 展开更多

Based on the SM communication records provided by some volunteers, we investigate the statistics of SM communication pattern, including the inter-event time distributions between two consecutive short messages and two conversations, and the distribution of message number contained in a complete conversation. In the individual level, the empirical result raises strong evidence that the human activity pattern, exhibiting a heavy-tailed inter-event time distribution, is driven by a non-Poisson process. 展开更多

The GRACE Earth's gravitational field complete up to degree and order 120 is recovered based on the same and different three-axis resolution indexes from satellite-borne accelerometer using the improved energy conservation principle. The results show that designing XA1(2) as low-sensitivity axis (3 × 10^-9 m/s^2) of accelerometer and designing YA1(2) and ZA1(2) as high-sensitivity axes (3 × 10^-10 m/s^2) are reasonable. The physical reason why the resolution of XA1(2) is one order of magnitude lower than YA1(2) and ZA1(2) is that non-conservative forces acting on GRACE satellites are mainly decomposed into YA1(2) and ZA1(2) in the orbital plane. Since XA1(2) is not orthogonal accurately to orbital plane during the development of accelerometer, the measurement of XA1(2) can not be thrown off entirely, but be reduced properly. 展开更多

A simple, economical and reliable technique is proposed for fabricating a spiral phase plate (SPP) in a quartz substrate to generate optical vortex with a unit topological charge at the wavelengths of 632.8nm. The spiral phase plate is first formed in the photoresist by direct laser writing lithography and then transferred into the quartz substrate by inductively coupled plasma etching. The performance of the fabricated SPP is verified by using beam intensity distribution, which is in agreement with the theoretical calculation result. The interference measurement suggests that we have succeeded to generate optical vortex with a unit topological charge with the fabricated SPP. 展开更多

We construct a realistic model to evaluate the chorus wave-particle interaction in the outer radiation belt L = 4.5. This model incorporates a plasmatrough number density model, a field-aligned density model and a realistic wave power and frequency model. We solve the 2D bounce-averaged momentum-pitch-angle Fokker-Planck equation and show that the Whistler-mode chorus can be effective in the acceleration of electrons, and enhance the phase space density for energies of -1 MeV by a factor from 10 to 10^3 in about two days, consistent with the observation. We also demonstrate that ignorance of the electron number density variation along field line and magnetic local time in the previous work yields an overestimate of energetic electron phase space density by a factor 5-10 at large pitch-angle after two days, suggesting that a realistic plasma density model is very important to evaluate the evolution of energetic electrons in the outer radiation belt. 展开更多

High resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements have been carried out to study the superconducting gap in the (Ba0.6K0.4)Fe2As2 superconductor with Tc=35 K. Two hole-like Fermi surface sheets around the F point exhibit different superconducting gaps. The inner Fermi surface sheet shows larger (10 - 12 meV) and slightly momentum-dependent gap while the outer one has smaller (7 - 8 meV) and nearly isotropic gap. The lack of gap node in both Fermi surface sheets favours s-wave superconducting gap symmetry. Superconducting gap opening is also observed at the M(π, π) point. The two Fermi surface spots near the M point are gapped below Tc but the gap persists above Tc. The rich and detailed superconducting gap information will provide key insights and constraints in understanding pairing mechanism in the iron-based superconductors. 展开更多

An one-year of sampling aerosol program was carried out during the period of April 1995 to April 1996 at coastal region, Cape D′Aguilar, in Hong Kong. The trace element composition of aerosol particles(TSP and PM 10 ) were measured and analyzed by using the Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis(INAA) and Inductive Couple Plasma-Mass Spectrometry(ICP-MS) techniques. The results showed that the polluted elements such as: V, Zn, As, Pb, Cd, Sb, I, Se, Bi, with high enrichment factor(E.F) values, are derived from anthropogenic sources, while Sc, Al, Fe, Mn, Sm, La, Sr are less than 10 in E.F, these elements are related the crust and soil. The concentration of the trace elements are present seasonal variation i.e. summer low and winter high, whereas the V or noncrustal V(V *) present summer high and winter low, this phenomenon might be explained by local or regional oil combustion sources. Use three type of elemental ratio, e.g. La/Sm, Mn */V * and Bi/Al indicate that both TSP and PM 10 of La/Sm ratios are mainly related to soil and dust, Mn */V * are probably represent fossil combustion and Bi/Al are possibly associated with refuse incineration, ferromanganese alloys and aluminum production. The varimax rotation factor analysis for trace elements was performed. By means of the absolute principal component analysis(APCA) and multiple regression, the contribution of trace elements to possible sources and overall means of trace elements were estimated. The results showed that the present station is impacted by the anthropogenic species, although the quantities are different during the summertime and wintertime. 展开更多

The tangential component of the vector field at the mesh edges is used as a degree of freedom to overcome the shortcomings of node-based finite element methods. The algorithm can simulate inhomogeneous media with arbitrary distribution of conductivity and magnetic permeability. The electromagnetic response of well logging tools are studied in dipping bed layers with the borehole and invasion included. In order to simulate realistic logging tools, we take the transmitter antennas consisting of circular wire loops instead of magnetic dipoles. We propose a scheme for realization of three-qubit controlled-phase gate via passing two three-level atoms through a high-Q optical cavity in a cavity QED system. In the presented protocol, the two stable ground states of the atoms act as the two controlling qubits and the zero- and one-photon Fock states of the cavity-field form the target qubit, and no auxiliary state or any measurement is required. The numerical simulation shows that the gate fidelities remain at a high level under the influence of the atomic spontaneous emission, the decay of the cavity mode and deviation of the coupling strength. Hot-carrier degradation for 90 nm gate length lightly-doped drain (LDD) NMOSFET with ultra-thin (1.4 nm) gate oxide is investigated under the low gate voltage stress (LGVS) and peak substrate current (Isub max) stress. It is found that the degradation of device parameters exhibits saturating time dependence under the two stresses. We concentrate on the effect of these two stresses on gate-induced-drain leakage (GIDL) current and stress induced leakage current (SILC). The characteristics of the GIDL current are used to analyse the damage generated in the gate-to-LDD region during the two stresses. However, the damage generated during the LGVS shows different characteristics from that during Isub stress. SILC is also investigated under the two stresses. It is found experimentally that there is a linear correlation between the degradation of SILC and that of threshold voltage during the two stresses. It is concluded that the mechanism of SILC is due to the combined effect of oxide charge trapping and interface traps for the ultra-short gate length and ultra-thin gate oxide LDD NMOSFETs under the two stresses. 展开更多

Their photoluminescence (PL) properties of the two samples are studied. The results indicate that the PL integral intensity of the green LED on the patterned substrate is nearly two times of that on the planar one within the whole measured temperature range. The enhanced PL intensity in the green LED on the patterned substrate is shown completely contributed from the extraction efficiency, but not from the internal quantum efficiency. The conclusion is supported by temperature-dependent PL analysis on the two samples, and the mechanisms axe discussed. 展开更多

FePt magnetic nanoparticle systems are an excellent candidate for ultrahigh-density magnetic recording. Monodisperse FePt nanoparticles are synthesized by superhydride reduction of FECl2·4H2O and Pt (acac)2 at 263℃ under N2 atmosphere. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images show monosize EePt nanoparticles with diameter of 4 nm and a standard deviation of about 10%. The average distance between monodispesre particles is nearly 3 nm, and oleic acid and oleylamine surround the nanoparticles as surfactants. Stability investigation of nanoparticle colloidal solution is done via speetrophotometery analysis. The results for FePt nanoparticles dispersed in hexane indicate that adding surfactants with concentration of 3 × 10^-3 part by volume for centrifugation stage increases the stability of FePt nanoparticles solution with concentration of 16 mg/mL, about 67%. 展开更多

Optical and electrical properties of diamond-like carbon (DLC) films deposited by pulsed laser ablation of graphite target at different substrate temperatures are reported. By varying the deposition temperature from 400 to 25℃, the film optical transparency and electrical resistivity increase severely. Most importantly, the transparency and resistivity properties of the DLC films can be tailored to approaching diamond by adjusting the deposition temperature, which is critical to many applications. DLC films deposited at low temperatures show excellent optical transmittance and high resistivity. Over the same temperature regime an increase of the spa bonded C content is observed using visible Raman spectroscopy, which is responsible for the enhanced transparency and resistivity properties. 展开更多
