In this study, we sought to determine the association between environmental factors and nonsyndromic cleft of the lip and/or palate (NSCLP) to understand the etiology of the disease. A total of 200 NSCLP cases and 327 controls were recruited at the Maternal and Child Health Hospital of Xuzhou City. We conducted face-to-face interviews with the mothers of both cases and controls. The factors increasing the risk of NSCLP were a positive family history [odds ratio (OR)=56.74], pesticide exposure (OR=8.90), and indoor decoration pollution (OR= 4.32). On the other hand, the factors decreasing the risk of NSCLP were a high education level (OR=0.22) and supplementation of folic acid (OR=0.23) and multivitamins (OR=0.16). Positive family history, pesticide exposure, and indoor decoration pollution are associated with the risk of NSCLP. In contrast, high education level and folic acid and multivitamin supplementation are protective factors against NSCLP. 展开更多

Due to rapid growth of population, urbanization and industrialization, in many cites of the developing world, there is severe contradiction between urban land supply and land demand which resulted in many urban land use conflicting situations and urban environment degrading. This paper is mainly focused on this problem, demonstrating the feasibility and efficiency of environmental study by integrating GIS and environmetal zoning method. Two neighbourhoods of the old city of Wenzhou were chosen as the study area. With the aid of GIS software PC Arc/info as dBate IV, an urhan environmental impact assessment study was carried out based on the data available such as land use map and detailed attribute data of each land planning unit. The main factors taken into consideration include: the type of activity causing environmental stress, the type and strength of environmental impact and the type of receptive area that could be affected. 展开更多

The first task in prevention of diseases after an earthquake is to quickly provide an adequate source of safe drinking water.Otherwise, the incidence of infectious intestinal diseases in the disaster area residents will increase rapidly.Additional health measures, such as disinfecting drinking water, protecting the water source, and treating disaster area residents, must be taken at the same time. The sensory test of meat is a useful index of meat decomposition levels.Corpse alkali is a kind of toxic chemical, and personal protective measures must be taken in handling corpses. In general, all of these measures are important not only for achieving the goal of“no severe epidemic after strong earthquake disaster”in the affected areas, but also for enriching knowledge of disaster medicine.1989 Academic Press.Inc. 展开更多

This article expounds the significance of sustainable development in the existence and progress of mankind and the policies that China should adopt. It points out that the ecology, and resource and environmental sciences are the core in the study of sustainable development. The author analyzes the achievements, contributions and problems in the studies of resources, ecology and the environment, which have been carried out at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He also puts forward tentative ideas and suggestions in deepening the reform of systems, speeding up the construction of research bases, laying stress on regional features in study, promoting the integrating of disciplines, and giving play to the overall advantages of the Academy. 展开更多

The environment structure of natural nidi and epidemic areas of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) possesses characteristics of topography, hydrology, climate, soil, vegetation, and animals. The natural nidi and epidemic areas of HFRS are distributed mainly in plain and hilly regions under 500 meters above the sea level; in plentiful-water zones and transitional zones; in temperate zone and subtropical zone of the eastern monsoon region; in the abundant-aluminum soil region and the sial soil region; in the eastern China damp forest region (agricultural districts and northeast forest districts); in the eastern Asia dampness-prefering animal geographic region. Apodemus agrarius and Rattus norvegicus are the thriving animal population, predominant species or common species as well as the main reservoir hosts and sources of infection in the natural nidi and epidemic areas of HFRS. 展开更多

Rapid economic development over the past two decades in Asian countries such as China and India has raised awareness of pollution control measures necessary to protect public health and welfare. The 7th Asian Aerosol Conference (AAC) of the Asian Aerosol Research Assembly (AARA), was held in Xi'an, China, during August 17-20, 2011. The 7th AAC engaged 550 participants from the sciences, industry, and regulatory communities from 21 countries. The conference included -350 plenary, platform, and poster presentations. In this special issue of PARTICUOLOGY, 15 peer-reviewed scientific articles have been selected to publish from the conference abstracts to represent recent advances for aerosol and environment study in Asia. 展开更多
