In this study, we targeted the primary metabolites in the epicarp, the mesocarp and the seed of the fruit of Dacryodes edulis at taste maturity, which were selected for their nutritional quality and its appreciation throughout the Gulf of Guinea area, which is very popular because of its large size, texture and special taste. The evaluation of total carbohydrates, total lipids and soluble proteins in the epicarp, mesocarp and seed of the fruit at taste maturity was made from spectrophotometer measurements. The overall analysis of the results of the present study shows that total carbohydrates, total lipids and proteins accumulate more in the seed with respectively 251.33 ± 1.15 mg/g DM;9.92 ± 0.201 mg/g DM and 55.075 ± 0.024 mg/g DM. Likewise, the results indicate low concentrations of total carbohydrates and total lipids in the epicarp with respectively 245 ± 1 mg/g DM and 4.77 ± 0.047 mg/g DM, on the other hand, it is the mesocarp which presents the lowest content of soluble proteins: 28.075 ± 3.231 mg/g DM. This variation could be linked to the nature of the compartment, more particularly to the storage location. This comparative study could lead to the valorization of the seed of the fruit of Dacryodes edulis for its richness in metabolites and arouse significant interest in nutrition.展开更多

The preparation of ZRC from Ricinus communis was investigated in this paper. Orthogonal array experimental design method was used to optimize the preparation of ZRC. Optimized parameters were radiation power of 100 W, radiation time of 4 min, concentration of zinc chloride of 30% by volume and impregnation time of 16 h, respectively. The MRC and ZRC were characterized by pHzpc, SEM-EDAX and FTIR analysis. The effect of the presence of one dye solution on the adsorption of the other dye solution was investigated in terms of equilibrium isotherm and adsorption yield. Experimental results indicated that the uptake capacities of one dye were reduced by the presence of the other dye. The adsorption equilibrium data fits the Langmuir model well and follows pseudo second-order kinetics for the bio-sorption process. Among MRC and ZRC, ZRC shows most adsorption ability than MRC in single and binary system.展开更多

The fleece weight (FW), staple length on shoulder (STS), flank (STF), back (STB) and rump (STR), true wool fiber (TW), modulated fiber (MF), kemp fiber (KF) percentage, mean wool fiber diameter (MD) and its coefficient variation (CVMD), breaking load (BL), wool tenacity (WT) and extension (E) were measured. These data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA using SAS software package. The total mean of FW, STS, STB, STF STR;TW, MF, KF, MD, CVMD, BL, WT and E of wool were 1622.2 ± 0.2 gr, 6.20 ± 0.26 cm, 6.80 ± 0.20 cm, 6.50 ± 0.20 cm, 6.90 ± 0.20 cm, 63.30 ± 1.6 mu, 8.30 ± 1.6 mu, 28.40% ± 2.5%, 37.0 ± 0.9 mu, 47.02% ± 2.99%, 7.60 ± 0.3 kgf, 3.40 ± 0.2 gf/tex and 31.1% ± 1.7% respectively, although there was significant difference among treatments on FW, MF, KF, MD, BL and WT. The results showed that feeding lambs with 25% pistachio epicarp silage of total dry matter intake affected wool characteristics and its effect was similar with the control group.展开更多

The babassu nut is approximately 8 to 15 cm long and 5 to 7 cm wide, with a slightly ov...Babassu (Orbignya speciosa) is a large-sized Brazilian palm with smooth, oblong ellipsoidal fruits, brown in color when mature. The babassu nut is approximately 8 to 15 cm long and 5 to 7 cm wide, with a slightly oval shape. The main commercial product extracted from babassu is the oil extracted from the kernels which represents 7% of the total weight of the fruit. The babassu nut nowadays is collected and shelled manually by women, this representing a problem of social order in the North/Northeastern region of Brazil. The objective of the present research was to develop an adequate shelling process for the nut, adding value to the raw material and taking better advantage of each of its components: epicarp, mesocarp, endocarp and the kernel itself, thus obtaining the shelled nut, composed of the endocarp and seed. The raw material had been dried by heat treatment; the epicarp and mesocarp were extracted using abrasive shelling equipment. The best position to cut the babassu nut was studied, in order to remove the kernel. The focus of the design was a simple, cheap process, easy to handle and agile to use, allowing the nuts to be cut with safety. The equipments were built based on the data which characterized the babassu nut, giving priority to the cost, adequacy for the region, ease in handling and safety. Considering a single work shift, a yield of 426.54% was obtained for the "nut cutter" equipment in relation to the productivity of the "nut-cracking women".展开更多
