The combustion of fossil fuels resulted in the generation of greenhouse gases, which increased the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Global warming and ozone layer degradation are the negative consequences. In a country like India, where consumable oils are still imported, it is sense to look at the possibility of using such unpalatable oils in CI engines that aren’t often utilized as cooking oil. Palm oil is a vegetable oil obtained from the monocarp of the oil palm’s crop. The main goal is to provide a low-cost, high-performance alternative to diesel. The possibility of palm oil as a realistic, modest, and effective hotspot for the generation of biodiesel is investigated in this research. The non-edible oils are believed to be one of the major feedstock for the production of biodiesel in future.In the present study,we investigated the production of Jatropha oil methyl esters(JOMEs) via alkali-catalyz...The non-edible oils are believed to be one of the major feedstock for the production of biodiesel in future.In the present study,we investigated the production of Jatropha oil methyl esters(JOMEs) via alkali-catalyzed transesterification route.The biophysical characteristics of Jatropha oil were found within the optimal range in accordance with ASTM standards as a substitute diesel fuel.The chemical composition and production yield of as-synthesized biodiesel were confirmed by various analytical techniques such as FT-IR,1H NMR,13 C NMR and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry.A high percentage conversion,~96.09%,of fatty acids into esters was achieved under optimized transesterification conditions with 6 :1 oil to methanol ratio and 0.9 wt% Na OH for 50 min at ~60°C.Moreover,twelve fatty acids methyl esters(FAME) were quantified in the GC/MS analysis and it was interesting to note that the mass fragmentation pattern of saturated,monounsaturated and diunsaturated FAME was comparable with the literature reported values.展开更多
Troxerutin fatty acid esters were prepared using troxerutin and fatty acid vinyl esters as substrates in pyridine through enzymatic route. The structures of as-prepared compounds were identified by FT-TR, NMR, and ESI...Troxerutin fatty acid esters were prepared using troxerutin and fatty acid vinyl esters as substrates in pyridine through enzymatic route. The structures of as-prepared compounds were identified by FT-TR, NMR, and ESI-HRMS. Using alkaline protease(≥30 mg/mL) as enzyme, maximum yields reached 58% at 3:1(vinyl hexanoate to troxerutin) in pyridine(water content ≤1%). The yields gradually declined as chain length of acyl donors rose. The antioxidation abilities of the as-obtained compounds were confirmed by both DPPH free radical scavenging and potassium ferricyanide reduction methods. The antioxidation ability of troxerutin fatty acid esters was found lower than that of troxerutin. However, the logP values of troxerutin fatty acid esters varied from 0.15 to 1.94, suggesting that troxerutin fatty acid esters had better lipophilicity than troxerutin(logP =-2.12) when compared to their oil-water distribution coefficients. Overall, these findings look promising as reference for further development of future troxerutin.展开更多
Global economic and pollution concerns are having a major impact on how modern engine oils are being formulated.Modern engine oil specifications mandate reduced levels of phosphorus and sulfur to protect the efficacy ...Global economic and pollution concerns are having a major impact on how modern engine oils are being formulated.Modern engine oil specifications mandate reduced levels of phosphorus and sulfur to protect the efficacy of pollution control devices.In addition,modern engine oil must also be more fuel efficient than earlier generations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the impact of high priced gasoline and diesel fuel to the consumer.At the same time,oxidation,wear,and corrosion performance of the oil must not be compromised.Multifunctional additives are useful formulation tools that help formulators meet these tough new challenges.One such additive is the organo-borate ester/amide.Originally conceived as an organic friction modifier,this patented technology is really a multifunctional additive that addresses the global economic and pollution concerns.With the addition of boron,this unique commercial organic friction modifier also imparts antioxidancy,antiwear and anticorrosion properties to engine oil.In addition,the organo-borate ester/amide is compatible with pollution control devices because it does not contain sulfur or phosphorus.Work is on going to uncover additional beneficial properties of this chemistry.展开更多

Ethanolysis of waste cooking oil with hexane as c...Biofuels became more promising alternative to the fossil fuels because of the depletion of fossil resources, renewability, environmental benefits, and energy security. Ethanolysis of waste cooking oil with hexane as co-solvent was carried out for the production of fatty acid ethyl ester (FAEE). This process reduced the severity of process parameters with high purity biodiesel yield. Process variables such as co-solvent ratio, ethanol to oil molar ratio, reaction temperature and reaction time were optimized. The maximum biodiesel yield of 88% was obtained at ethanol/oil molar ratio of 40:1, co-solvent (hexane) to oil ratio of 0.2% (v/v), reaction temperature of 300°C in 20 min of reaction time. Fatty acid ethyl ester (biodiesel) samples produced from this process were measured and evaluated using GC-MS analytical instrument. Thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA) was also performed to examine the thermal stability of waste cooking oil, ethyl esters and fuel blends. Fuel properties of ethyl esters were determined and compared with the ASTM standards for biodiesel, regular diesel and ethyl esters from different feedstock.展开更多

We performed a comparative analysis of dielectric paper dipped i...The purpose of this work is to determine the impact of thermal aging on the dielectric and physicochemical properties of the oil/paper mixed insulation. We performed a comparative analysis of dielectric paper dipped in two cooling fluids: palm kernel oil methyl ester (MEPKO) and mineral oil (MO). Two types of dielectric paper were used: Thermally Upgraded Kraft paper (TUK) and Nomex-910 paper (NP-910). An accelerated aging test was realized at 110<span style="white-space:nowrap;">°</span>C during a total of 96 hours. Samples of oil and paper were collected after 0, 48, 72 and 96 hours for analyses purposes. The analyses performed included the measurement of the Breakdown voltage (BDV) of the dielectric papers, the Total Acid Number (TAN) and the Decay Dissolved Products (DDP) of the liquid dielectrics. The BDV of NP-910 is greater than the BDV of TUK. Concerning the type of oil, the BDV of dielectric papers impregnated with MEPKO is greater than the BDV of similar papers impregnated with MO, indicating a better preservation of paper when dipped in methyl esters. The analyses of TAN and DDP revealed that Nomex-910 improves the oxidation stability of MO, but reduces the oxidation stability of MEPKO. These results prove that methyl esters can be used as a substitute to replace mineral oils in power transformers. Furthermore, they show that NP can be used mainly in areas of transformer where solid insulation is subjected to high thermal and electrical stress, and TUK other places where solid insulation is required. Such combination could assure money savings and a better preservation of the oil viscosity.展开更多
