Based on a Life Cycle Assessment model, the effect of the whole life cycle of excessive commodity packaging on the environment was analyzed by eBalance Evaluation LCA software from production through circulation. The cost evaluation system and environment impact model of its three main processes, that is, material production, product machining and waste manufacturing, were established to identify the main environmental impact corresponding indicators and the influence on energy conservation and emissions reduction of excessive packaging life cycle. And packaging of moon-cakes was taken as an example to analyze the difference between the ordinary packaging and excessive packaging of moon-cakes in terms of life cycle assessment and costs analysis. Meanwhile some measures are put forward to conserve energy and reduce emissions. 展开更多

Heat-killed Bifidobacterium longum CLA8013 has been demonstrated to improve the frequency of defecation, straining, and pain during defecation in human placebo-controlled, double-blind, parallel-group studies. We conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group study to evaluate the safety of both long-term and excessive intakes of heat-killed B. longum CLA8013, when used as a food with functional claims. In both tests, 30 healthy volunteers were divided into two groups: an active group that ingested heat-killed B. longum CLA8013 and a placebo group. In the long-term intake safety study, participants in the active group ingested 25 billion cells/day for 12 weeks. In the excessive intake safety study, participants in the active group ingested 125 billion cells/day for 4 weeks. Physical, hematological, biochemical, and urine examinations were conducted, and adverse events were evaluated in both studies. The studies revealed no abnormalities in any of the safety tests. In conclusion, no safety-related issues were identified with long-term or excessive intake of heat-killed B. longum CLA8013. 展开更多

Deep coalbed methane(DCBM),an unconventional gas reservoir, has undergone significant advancements in recent years, sparking a growing interest in assessing pore pressure dynamics within these reservoirs. While some production data analysis techniques have been adapted from conventional oil and gas wells, there remains a gap in the understanding of pore pressure generation and evolution, particularly in wells subjected to large-scale hydraulic fracturing. To address this gap,a novel technique called excess pore pressure analysis(EPPA)has been introduced to the coal seam gas industry for the first time to our knowledge, which employs dual-phase flow principles based on consolidation theory. This technique focuses on the generation and dissipation for excess pore-water pressure(EPWP)and excess pore-gas pressure(EPGP)in stimulated deep coal reservoirs.Equations have been developed respectively and numerical solutions have been provided using the finite element method(FEM).Application of this model to a representative field example reveals that excess pore pressure arises from rapid loading, with overburden weight transferred under undrained condition due to intense hydraulic fracturing, which significantly redistributes the weight-bearing role from the solid coal structure to the injected fluid and liberated gas within artificial pores over a brief timespan.Furthermore, field application indicates that the dissipation of EPWP and EPGP can be actually considered as the process of well production, where methane and water are extracted from deep coalbed methane wells, leading to consolidation for the artificial reservoirs. Moreover, history matching results demonstrate that the excess-pressure model established in this study provides a better explanation for the declining trends observed in both gas and water production curves, compared to conventional practices in coalbed methane reservoir engineering and petroleum engineering. This research not only enhances the understanding of DCBM reservoir behavior but also offers insights applicable to production analysis in other unconventional resources reliant on hydraulic fracturing. 展开更多

BACKGROUND The coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic disrupted healthcare in the United States.AIM To investigate COVID-19-related and non-COVID-19-related death and characteristics associated with excess death among inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)decedents.METHODS We performed a register-based study using data from the National Vital Statistics System, which reports death data from over 99%of the United States population, from January 1,2006 through December 31,2021.IBD-related deaths among adults 25 years and older were stratified by age,sex,race/ethnicity,place of death, and primary cause of death.Predicted and actual age-standardized mortality rates(ASMRs)per 100000 persons were compared.RESULTS 49782 IBD-related deaths occurred during the study period.Non-COVID-19-related deaths increased by 13.14%in 2020 and 18.12%in 2021[2020 ASMR:1.55 actual vs 1.37 predicted,95%confidence interval(CI):1.26-1.49;2021 ASMR:1.63 actual vs 1.38 predicted,95%CI:1.26-1.49].In 2020,non-COVID-19-related mortality increased by 17.65%in ulcerative colitis(UC)patients between the ages of 25 and 65 and 36.36%in non-Hispanic black(NHB)Crohn’s disease(CD)patients.During the pandemic, deaths at home or on arrival and at medical facilities as well as deaths due to neoplasms also increased.CONCLUSION IBD patients suffered excess non-COVID-19-related death during the pandemic.Excess death was associated with younger age among UC patients, and with NHB race among CD patients.Increased death at home or on arrival and due to neoplasms suggests that delayed presentation and difficulty accessing healthcare may have led to increased IBD mortality. 展开更多

This editorial discusses the manuscript by Di Maria et al,published in the recent issue of the World Journal of Cardiology. We here focus on the still elusive pathophysiological mechanisms underlying cardio-renal syndrome(CRS),despite its high prevalence and the substantial worsening of both kidney function and heart failure. While the measure of right atrial pressure through right cardiac catheterization remains the most accurate albeit invasive and costly procedure, integrating bedside ultrasound into diagnostic protocols may substantially enhance the staging of venous congestion and guide therapeutic decisions. In particular, with the assessment of Doppler patterns across multiple venous districts, the Venous Excess Ultrasound(VExUS)score improves the management of fluid overload and provides insight into the underlying factors contributing to cardio-renal interactions.Integrating specific echocardiographic parameters, particularly those concerning the right heart, may thus improve the VExUS score sensitivity, offering perspective into the nuanced comprehension of cardio-renal dynamics.A multidisciplinary approach that consistently incorporates the use of ultrasound is emerging as a promising advance in the understanding and management of CRS. 展开更多

In this editorial we comment on the article by Kuwahara et al,published in the recent issue of the World Journal of Cardiology. In this interesting paper, the authors showed a correlation between portal vein pulsatility ratio, examined by bedside ultrasonography, and prognosis of hospitalized patients with acute heart failure.Systemic congestion is being notoriously underdetected in the acutely ill population with conventional methods like clinical examination, biomarkers, central venous pressure estimation and X-rays.However,congestion should be a key therapeutic target due to its deleterious effects to end organ function and subsequently patient prognosis.Doppler flow assessment of the abdominal veins is gaining popularity worldwide,as a valuable tool in estimating comprehensively congestion and giving a further insight into hemodynamics and patient management. 展开更多

Point-of-care ultrasonography(POCUS),particularly venous excess ultrasound(VExUS)is emerging as a valuable bedside tool to gain real-time hemodynamic insights. This modality, derived from hepatic vein, portal vein, and intrarenal vessel Doppler patterns, offers a scoring system for dynamic venous congestion assessment.Such an assessment can be crucial in effective management of patients with heart failure exacerbation. It facilitates diagnosis, quantification of congestion, prognostication, and monitoring the efficacy of decongestive therapy. As such,it can effectively help to manage cardiorenal syndromes in various clinical settings.Extended or eVExUS explores additional veins, potentially broadening its applications. While VExUS demonstrates promising outcomes, challenges persist, particularly in cases involving renal and liver parenchymal disease, arrhythmias, and situations of pressure and volume overload overlap.Proficiency in utilizing spectral Doppler is pivotal for clinicians to effectively employ this tool.Hence, the integration of POCUS,especially advanced applications like VExUS,into routine clinical practice necessitates enhanced training across medical specialties. 展开更多

A case of progressive supranuclear palsy in a 66-year-old woman is presented. The patient complained of“progressive stiffness of both lower limbs for five years, accompanied by choking and coughing for more than 1 year,”and was diagnosed with paralysis in traditional Chinese medicine(TCM),which was characterized by a deficiency of liver and kidney, and phlegm and blood stasis blocking the collaterals.Western medicine diagnosed it as progressive supranuclear palsy. The patient was diagnosed with“Parkinson’s disease”several times in the past and was given“polybasic hydrazide”and“amantadine hydrochloride tablets,”etc. The patient did not have significant symptomatic relief,so she sought further treatment with a combination of traditional Chinese and Western medicine.Based on the concept of deficiency and excess, this disease is categorized as a paralytic disease in Chinese medicine, and the onset of the disease is closely related to the deficiency of the body after a long period of illness, with wind, phlegm, blood stasis, and deficiency as the main pathogenetic mechanism. The treatment is based on the combination of disease and evidence, with traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture as the main treatments, supplemented by intermediate-frequency pulsed electrical stimulation, transcranial repetitive magnetic stimulation, medicated canisters, wax therapy, traditional Chinese medicine guasha, and acupoint injections.Western medicine is based on symptomatic treatment, and the patient’s symptoms were relieved significantly after the combination of Chinese and Western medicine. 展开更多

The objective of this study was to assess the effects of excessive weight gain during pregnancy on the outcome of cesarean delivery. It was a cohort study comparing the outcome of cesarean delivery between 56 pregnant women with excessive weight gain during pregnancy and 75 pregnant women with no excessive weight gain during pregnancy, consecutively recruited at the Yaoundé Gyneco-Obstetric and Pediatric Hospital, Cameroon. In women delivered by cesarean section, excessive weight gain during pregnancy was found to predispose to: time interval from parietal incision to fetal extraction of more than five minutes, duration of cesarean section more than 60 minutes, blood loss more than 1000 ml during surgery, post-operative maternal complications, especially sepsis, fetal weight >3.5 kg and macrosomia. A systematic screening of excessive weight gain should be offered to all pregnant women, so as to prevent the adverse effects of excessive gestational weight gain on cesarean outcome. 展开更多

Aqueous ammonia mixed with caustic potash as wheat straw pulping liquor was investigated. The caustic potash not only roduced the NH3 usage and cooking time, but also provided a potassium source as a fertilizer in the black liquor. Excessive NH3 in black liquor from wheat straw NF4OH-KOH pulping process was recovered by batch distillation with a 98% recovery rate of free NH3 under atmospheric pressure and constant reflux. The temperature at the bottom of the column was controlled at 104 - 105 ℃. After removal of free NH3, the black liquor contained 8.4 g/L NH3-N and 7. 04 g/L total potassium, with a substantial amount of ammoniacal lignin, and it could be used as a liquid fertilizer for farming. The height equivalent to a theoretical plate (HETP) of a rectifier for recovering free NH3 was calculated. The diameter and height of packing of the rectifier based on a daily consumption of 75 t oven-dry wheat straw were estimated. 展开更多

Background/Aims: Administration of a lactic acid bacterial strain, Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis JCM 5805 (LC-Plasma), is reported to prevent viral infection via activation of plasmacytoid dendritic cells in mouse and human studies. As it is assumed that LC-Plasma is taken in excess when it is commercially provided as a supplement, we conducted a trial using capsules to give 250 mg LC-Plasma (5 times the effective anti-viral dose) every day for four weeks to healthy volunteers to investigate the safety of excessive intake of LC-Plasma. Trial Design: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group trial was conducted. Methods: Forty healthy subjects were randomly assigned to the LC-Plasma group (daily intake of five capsules containing 50 mg heat-killed LC-Plasma cells per capsule) or the placebo group (daily intake of five placebo capsules with no LC-Plasma). Physical, hematological, biochemical and urinary examinations and medical interviews were used to evaluate safety. Results: No abnormal differences were observed after excessive intake of LC-Plasma capsules when compared to the intake of placebo capsules. Conclusions: There are no safety concerns associated with the excessive intake of heat-killed LC-Plasma capsules. 展开更多

Congestive nephropathy is kidney dysfunction caused by the impact of elevated venous pressures on renal hemodynamics. As a part of cardiorenal syndrome, the diagnosis is usually made based on history and physical examination, with findings such as jugular venous distension,a third heart sound, and vital signs as supporting findings.More recently, however, these once though objective measures have come under scrutiny for their accuracy. At the same time, bedside ultrasound has increased in popularity and is routinely being used by clinicians to take some of the guess work out of making the diagnosis of volume overload and venous congestion. In this mini-review,we will discuss some of the traditional methods used to measure venous congestion, describe the role of point-of-care ultrasound and how it can ameliorate a clinician’s evaluation, and offer a description of venous excess ultrasound score,a relatively novel scoring technique used to objectively quantify congestion. While there is a paucity of published large scale clinical trials evaluating the potential benefit of ultrasonography in venous congestion compared to gold standard invasive measurements, more study is underway to solidify the role of this objective measure in daily clinical practice. 展开更多

A need exists for an easier and faster objective clinical measures of EDS. The autonomic nervous system controls pupil size and prior pupillometry studies have demonstrated associations with sleepiness. We used a novel portable device to assess pupillometry and prospectively evaluated a sleep clinic cohort. Methods: Following IRB approval Pupillometry (The ForSiteTM, NeurOptics, Irvine, CA), was performed on 113 sleep clinic patients. Constriction and dilation velocity and latencies, minimum and maximum aperture were obtained along with Epworth Sleepiness Score (ESS), 10 point Visual Analog Scale (VAS), BMI, gender, age and AHI. Three sets of measures were obtained and analyzed with ANOVA, t-test, Linear Regression and Pearson correlation coefficients (SAS, Cary, NC). Results: Both constriction velocity and latency correlated with VAS (n = 88, r = 0.28, p = 0.007 and r = 0.31, p = 0.004). Only constriction velocity correlated with AHI (n = 78, r = -0.27, p = 0.016). Multivariate linear regression which includes VAS and age predicted constriction velocity (r = 0.36, p = 0.002) and latency (r = 0.38, p = 0.001). Using Pearson correlation, AHI and VAS combined were associated with constriction velocity (-0.273 (0.016), and 0.284 (0.007), respectively). Using a maximum constriction velocity threshold value (age adjusted) of 2.8, VAS ≥ 6 was predicted with a sensitivity of 83% and specificity of 84%. Conclusions: Pupillary constriction velocity and latency predict self-reported VAS state of sleepiness. While both are affected by age, only constriction velocity is affected by apnea severity. These data suggest that a portable pupillometer may provide a method to identify individuals with abnormal sleepiness. 展开更多

Road safety is still an important issue with road accidents among the leading causes of death accounting for more than 1.2 million fatalities and 50 million injuries globally per year. Of these casualties, speeding is a substantial contributing factor. Nowadays, speed reduction is mainly achieved through speed law enforcement measures. The review is aimed at examining the different enforcement approaches used to control and monitor excessive speeds on highways at large and particularly in Cameroon. A systematic search was performed in Science Direct, Elsevier, google scholar, scientific research, and Springer, ResearchGate, Scopus, and PubMed databases. Furthermore, references of selected articles were reviewed to maximize the rate of articles found. The details of the research articles were generated using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) flow chart. The results show that of 658 retried articles, duplicates of 458 were excluded and 200 were screened. A total of 61 and 40 articles were screened from abstract and full pdf text respectively. Finally, 15 relevant studies were included in the study. The review revealed that the included articles on speed enforcement on the highway were limited to sanctioning defaulters for fine payments. 展开更多

The physiological and metabolic differences in maize under different nitrogen(N)levels are the basis of reasonable N management, which is vital in improving fertilizer utilization and reducing environmental pollution. In this paper,on the premise of defining the N fertilizer efficiency and yield under different long-term N fertilization treatments, the corresponding differential metabolites and their metabolic pathways were analyzed by untargeted metabolomics in maize.N stress, including deficiency and excess, affects the balance of carbon(C)metabolism and N metabolism by regulating C metabolites(sugar alcohols and tricarboxylic acid(TCA)cycle intermediates)and N metabolites(various amino acids and their derivatives).L-alanine,L-phenylalanine,L-histidine,and L-glutamine decreased under N deficiency, and L-valine,proline,and L-histidine increased under N excess. In addition to sugar alcohols and the above amino acids in C and N metabolism, differential secondary metabolites,flavonoids(e.g.,kaempferol,luteolin,rutin,and diosmetin),and hormones(e.g.,indoleacetic acid,trans-zeatin,and jasmonic acid)were initially considered as indicators for N stress diagnosis under this experimental conditions. This study also indicated that the leaf metabolic levels of N2(120 kg ha–1 N)and N3(180 kg ha–1 N)were similar, consistent with the differences in their physiological indexes and yields over 12 years. This study verified the feasibility of reducing N fertilization from 180 kg ha–1(locally recommended)to 120 kg ha–1 at the metabolic level, which provided a mechanistic basis for reducing N fertilization without reducing yield, further improving the N utilization rate and protecting the ecological environment. 展开更多

Since the mechanisms of methane-mudstone interactions are important for estimating shale gas reserves, methane adsorption under supercritical conditions of 30 MPa pressure and 303.15,333.15,363.15 K temperatures was studied to measure the excess methane adsorption in two mudstone samples from Yanchang Formation,Ordos Basin.Excess adsorption features inflection points where the amount of adsorbed gas changes from increasing to decreasing concentrations.Three methods(fixed, slope, and freely fitted density)were applied to calculate the adsorbed-phase density(rad),which was then used to fit the measured excess adsorption. Two criteria, the goodness-of-fit and whether the fitting can obtain reasonable absolute adsorption, were applied to determine the most accurate model. Results indicated that the supercritical Dubinin-Radushkevich(SDR)model with freely fitted rad was the most reasonable model. The volume of adsorbed methane at 363.15 K is close to the micropore(d<2 nm)volume of the corresponding mudstone.Considering the actual geological conditions, the adsorbed gas should be predominantly stored in micropores.Thermodynamic parameters reveal that the methane adsorption on mudstone is a physisorption process that is jointly controlled by the heterogeneity of,and interaction forces between the methane molecule and,the rock surface. 展开更多

Vibration induced by shield construction can lead to liquefaction of saturated sand.Based on FLAC3D software,a numerical model of tunnel excavation is established and sinusoidal velocity loads with different frequencies are applied to the excavation face. The pattern of the excess pore pressure ratio with frequency,as well as the dynamic response of soil mass under different frequency loads before excavation,is analyzed. When the velocity sinusoidal wave acts on the excavation surface of the shield tunnel with a single sand layer, soil liquefaction occurs. However, the ranges and locations of soil liquefaction are different at different frequencies, which proves that the vibration frequency influences the liquefaction location of the stratum. For sand-clay composite strata with liquefiable layers, the influence of frequency on the liquefaction range is different from that of a single stratum. In the frequency range of 5-30 Hz,the liquefaction area and surface subsidence decrease with an increase in vibration frequency. The research results in this study can be used as a reference in engineering practice for tunneling liquefiable strata with a shield tunneling machine. 展开更多

[Objectives]The paper was to explore the effects of different concentrations of paclobutrazol on seedling quality of small seedless watermelon in autumn.[Methods]The leaves of watermelon seedlings were sprayed with 30,50,80 and 120 mg/L paclobutrazol at cotyledon expansion stage, and those sprayed with tap water were used as control.[Results]All the treatments of paclobutrazol effectively inhibited the excessive growth of watermelon at seedling stage, significantly enhanced the leaf quality of watermelon seedlings and promoted root growth. The seedlings treated by 50 mg/L paclobutrazol had the best performance compared with the control:a decrease of hypocotyl by 37.9%,an increase of plant dry weight by 46.55%,significantly increased seedling strength index, deep green leaf color, thick leaves,an increase of specific leaf weight by 28.13%,and significantly heavier root weight and longer length.[Conclusions]The results will provide a reference for strong seedling cultivation of small seedless watermelon. 展开更多
