A brief account of the development of the research on mining earthquakes and the general situation of the Mentougou Coal Mine medium scale experiment field for earthquake prediction and the project of monitor and prediction is given. The differences of waveforms between mining earthquakes and natural earthquakes is discussed. The magnitude frequency distribution of the 79 000 mining earthquakes of over M L1.0 from 1984 to 1995 is summarized . Finally, taking PH and PV, the principal compressive stress components of the focal mechanism of the mining earthquakes, as the criteria, analyses the stress background of the 12 large mining earthquakes. 展开更多

A new real-time underwater equipment location method adopting an electric field induced by a standard current source is proposed. Our goals were real-time tracking and location of stationary or moving underwater equipment both in shallow and deep seas, under noisy conditions. The main features of this method are as follows:(1)a standard current source on the water surface, which can be towed by a vehicle, consisting of two electrodes,a signal generator, and a GPS unit;(2)measurement of the extremely low frequency(ELF)electric field emitted by the current source, made possible by electric field sensors on the underwater equipment;(3)position of the underwater equipment is estimated in real time based on a progressive update extended Kalman filter(PUEKF),which is carried out using the propagation model of an ELF electric field because the electric field at the position of the underwater equipment and the current source position are known. We verified the accuracy of our method and confirmed real-time location feasibility through numerical, physical scale, and real-time sea experiments.Through numerical experiments,we verified that our method works for underwater equipment location in real-world conditions, and the location error can be less than 0.2 m.Next,real-time location experiments for stationary underwater measuring equipment in water tank were conducted. The result shows that the location error can be less than 0.1 m.We also confirmed real-time location feasibility through the use of offshore experiment. We expect that our method will complement conventional underwater acoustic location methods for underwater equipment in acoustically noisy environments. 展开更多

The computation of the design load on culverts in the current Chinese General Code for Design of Highway Bridges and Culverts (CGCDHBC)is primarily based on the linear earth pressure theory, which cannot accurately reflect the changes in vertical loads on trench installation culverts. So the changes in vertical earth pressure and soil arching effect in the backfill for an unsymmetrical trench installation culvert are studied based on a full scale experiment and finite element (FE) simulation. The variation laws of foundation pressure and settlement are also analyzed. Meanwhile, the influence of eccentric load induced by an unsymmetrical trench installation on the interaction of a soil- structure system is discussed. Results show that soil arch is formed when the backfill on the culvert reaches a certain height. It can relieve the earth pressure concentration on the crest of the culvert, but it is instable. The earth pressures obtained by full scale experiment and numerical simulation are greater than those calculated by the current CGCDHBC method. The eccentric load effect on the culvert has a significant influence on the stress states and deformation of the soil-structure system. 展开更多

A full-scale, two-story, two-by-one bay, steel braced-frame was subjected to a number of unidirectional ground motions using three shake tables at the UNR-NEES site. The test-bed frame was designed to study the seismic performance of nonstructural systems including steel-framed gypsum partition walls, suspended ceilings and fire sprinkler systems. The frame can be configured to perform as an elastic or inelastic system to generate large floor accelerations or large inter story drift, respectively. In this study, the dynamic performance of the linear and nonlinear test-beds was comprehensively studied. The seismic performance of nonstructural systems installed in the linear and nonlinear test-beds were assessed during extreme excitations. In addition, the dynamic interactions of the test-bed and installed nonstructural systems are investigated. 展开更多
