Scientific interest in student’s mental health experiences has been increasing in the last years due to their influence on students’learning processes, academic performance, and recently, the suicidal news of a student at a private university due to her mental health condition in Lahore Punjab,Pakistan, captured public attention. That incident also shifted researchers and scholars’attention on the much underexplored and tabooed sphere of the broader public health domain.Hence, the current study aimed to explore the relationship between mental health problems and Pakistani university students’academic performance.Participants were 540 senior semester students within the age range of 20–35 years taken from public and private institutes of Pakistan’s major cities, including Lahore,Islamabad, and Peshawar.Descriptive and inferential statistics was employed for data analysis.Pearson Product Moment Correlation,Hierarchical Regression analysis, and Independent sample t-test were used for data analysis in inferential statistics. The results of the study reveal that there is a strong positive association between mental health and improvement in academic performance.Mental health problems negatively affect the academic performance of university students. The findings of the current study were beneficial for shedding light on the ignorant area within the broader public health domain;the results are also helpful in raising awareness for not only students but also the parents and university administration to plan and design effective intervention strategies to provide proper mental health that resultantly promote academic excellence. 展开更多

Social connectedness has been identified as a protective factor for a range of health issues however the literature is not conclusive. The high prevalence of hazardous alcohol consumption and mental health problems among university students along with the potential for the university as a setting for health promotion prompted this study. The study aims to explore the association between levels of alcohol consumption, mental health, social connectedness and social identity among university students. Online data were collected from a random sample of university undergraduate students (n = 2506) aged 18 - 24 years old. Outcomes were measured using the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT), the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale, Social Connectedness Scale, Social Identity Scale and measures of paid employment and study (hours), and participation in sports and other clubs. The majority of students had consumed alcohol in the last 12 months (87%). Of these students 38% reported to drink at hazardous levels (AUDIT ≥ 8). When all factors were considered: gender, living arrangements, being a domestic student, hours spent at work, participation in university and community sport, higher levels of psychological distress, higher levels of social connectedness, and lower levels of social identity were significant predictors of hazardous alcohol consumption. The finding highlights the need for the inclusion of integrated, multi-strategy health promotion interventions on campus. Further exploration of the associations between social connectedness and social identity as influences of health behaviors will better inform the development of targeted strategies for specific groups. 展开更多

Mental illness stigma is a social construct which involves labelling individuals with mental illness which in turn discredits and results in the loss of dignity of the individual,as well as causing the individual concerned to experience discrimination, marginalization, and isolation.Mental illness stigma can be influenced by various factors.Factors that can affect mental illness stigma are collectivist culture and mental health literacy. This study used quantitative methods with the aim to investigate the role of collectivist culture and mental health literacy in mental illness stigma. The subjects in this study were 160 undergraduate students at tertiary institutions in Indonesia. The instruments used in this study were the mental illness stigma scale, collectivist culture scale, and mental health literacy scale. The data analysis technique used in this study is multiple regression. The results of multiple regression tests showed a regression coefficient value of 0.239 and a coefficient of determination value of 0.057.The significance value of mental health literacy is 0.022(p<0.05)with a standardized beta coefficient of-0.189 and the significance value of collectivist culture is 0.232(p>0.05)with a standardized beta coefficient value of-0.098.These results indicate that both collectivist culture and mental health literacy simultaneously play a role in reducing the mental illness stigma of university students in Indonesia.Mental health literacy has a significant role in reducing mental illness stigma among university students in Indonesia, whereas collectivist culture does not have a significant role in reducing mental illness stigma. 展开更多

Summary: This study investigated the mental health status of medical students in China, and analyzed the influencing factors in order to provide evidence for mental health education for medical students. A stratified cluster sampling method was used to recruit medical students from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, China. The questionnaire survey on general information and Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90) were used for investigation and analysis. The results showed among the 1137 valid questionnaires, 278 (24.45%) participants had SCL-90 score ≥ 160. The top three mental problems of medical students were obsessive-compulsive disorder, interpersonal sensitivity and depression in terms of the factor score ≥ 2.5 and the number of participants who reflected on the diseases. The third-year medical students had the worst mental health status, and fifth-year medical students had the best mental health status. Students from rural area had more psychological problems than those from urban area; furthermore, students with high professional satisfaction, those who were the single child of the family, non-poor students, and those whose parents had high education level had better mental health status. It was concluded that the mental health of medical students is not optimistic in China. Medical students have some mental health problems of different degrees. Factors that influence the mental health of medical students include academic pressure, professional satisfaction level and family environment. 展开更多

Mental health literacy(MHL)refers to knowledge and attitudes that shape the recognition, management, and prevention of mental disorders. While the topic has been exhaustively researched in Western countries, research from Southeast Asia still is limited.Previous studies in this field showed a moderate recognition of mental disorders,a high prevalence of stigmatizing attitudes and a low willingness to seek professional help among Southeastern-Asian populations. This study explored the level of MHL among university students from different parts of Vietnam and Cambodia.Correlations with influencing factors(gender, age, study year, educational attainment of the parents,urban/rural origin, ethnicity, personal experiences with mental disorders)were also explored. An online survey, using a 30-item Vietnamese version of the Mental Health Literacy Scale(MHLS),was conducted at six university sites in Vietnam and Cambodia.Data of 1032 students from different study branches were included. The MHL of Vietnamese and Cambodian university students was lower, compared to samples from Australia or the UK.Females and students with a personal experience of mental disorders(self or family)showed a significantly higher MHL.No differences in MHL were found between students from different socioeconomic backgrounds(professional attainment of parents,urban/rural origin).Findings on the influence of ethnicity were inconclusive.MHL needs to be improved among the university students of Vietnam and Cambodia.Mental health promotion should specifically target male students, students from STEM branches, and international students. 展开更多

In Norway,300,000 people attend higher education.Elsewhere in Europe, student numbers are also high.In Great Britain,1.9 million people attended higher education in the academic year 2018–2019.This is a substantial part of the population, and the mental health and well-being of students are of prime importance.Thefirst year as a university student is a transitional period characterized by significant changes and constitutes an essential fundament for students in their student life and later. An increasing number of students report having mental health problems to various degrees.Identifying the variety of perceptions of what may promote mental health and well-being is therefore of importance. This study aims to explore whetherfirst year students in higher education perceive student life as promoting their mental health and well-being.Twenty students were interviewed(n=20).Phenomenographic analysis was used to reveal variation in the students’perceptions. Two descriptive categories were constructed,“The need to belong”and“The need for support,”withfive conceptions:the importance of the sponsorship week, small groups as a place to belong, being patient,a supportive environment and the university as a facilitator. How a sense of belonging and a sense of support was achieved varied among the participants, and the solution for how to achieve this lies in the students themselves, the way the university organizes the programmes and how the students are met by the administration, lecturers and fellow students. 展开更多

Object: To explore the relationship between psychological suzhi and mental health among Chinese college students, and to gain psychological suzhi factors that are predictors for mental health. Method: By using stratified sampling method, an investigation was conducted among 734 subjects. They were assessed with the College Student Psychological Suzhi Scale (CSPS, including 3 subscales, 28 factors) and General Health Questionnaire-20 item (GHQ-20, including 3 subscales). Results: 1) Psychological suzhi score for Chinese college students had negative correlation with the score of GHQ-20, GHQ-depression and GHQ-anxiety (p < 0.001), and positive correlation with the score of GHQ-self-affirmation (p < 0.001);2) Psychological suzhi score for Chinese college students was predictor of the score for GHQ-20 and its subscales namely GHQ-self-affirmation, GHQ-depression, and GHQ-anxiety (β = ?0.448, 0.439, ?0.262, ?0.259, p < 0.001);the variance explained by the score of GHQ-20 and its subscales were 19.9%, 19.1%, 6.7%, 6.5%;3) There were 12 psychological suzhi factors that were predictors for GHQ-self-affirmation which was known as the positive indicator of mental health (p < 0.05);11 psychological suzhi factors were predictors for GHQ-depression and GHQ-anxiety which was known as the negative indicator of mental health (p < 0.05). Conclusion: There exists a correlation between psychological suzhi and mental health, particularly in positive mental health. Indeed, the psychological suzhi factors are able to enhance the pertinence of mental health education. 展开更多

Mental health difficulties can impact students’motivation, focus, and ability to communicate with others.Students attending medical universities are more likely to experience anxiety, depression, and other mood changes for thefirst time. However,no study has examined their prevalence among Japanese rehabilitation students. This study investigated the prevalence of anxiety among Japanese rehabilitation students and aimed to identify its predictors.A cross-sectional study was conducted among 148first-year physical and occupational therapy students at a private medical university in Japan in June 2022.Data on sociodemographic and personal characteristics, such as gender, age, subject major, regular exercise, place of residence, and sleeping hours, were recorded using an original questionnaire.Instruments included the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory,COVID-19 questionnaire, and Beck Depression Inventory–Second Edition(BDI-II).The results indicated that 83(56%)and 77(52%)students exhibited state anxiety and trait anxiety symptoms,respectively.Thirty-four(23%)students experienced mild depressive symptoms.Associations were further determined between gender, subject major, handling of stress, loneliness, satisfaction with life, satisfaction with social connections, anxiety about the future, satisfaction with school life, fulfillment of friendships, and depression.Several variables demonstrated a statistically significant association:handling stress(p<0.05;95%CI 0.409–2.472),satisfaction with life(p<0.01;95%CI 0.500–0.897),anxiety about the future(p<0.01;95%CI 1.397–4.087),and depression(total score of BDI-II,p<0.01;95%CI 1.555–100.742).Our results emphasize that universities must establish a system for early identification and support of anxiety and depression in students. 展开更多

The present study examines the factorial structure and assesses the psychometric properties of the adapted multidimensional Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile II Scale, considering a sample of Italian university students who participated to an online survey. The original 52-items Scale showed a high overall internal consistency. Four of the six subscales were associated with good values of the Cronbach’s α coefficient, whereas two subscales had lower values. Hence corrected item-total correlation was calculated and 26 items that decreased the scale’s reliability were deleted. The remaining 26 items were first subjected to Principal Component Analysis that suggested a conceptually meaningful five-factor model. This result was further supported by the first-order confirmatory factor analysis, in which all the factor loadings were statistically significant. The internal consistency and the composite reliability for the reduced version of the Scale and its subscales have shown a good reliability for the measurement models. The multidimensionality of the scale was also confirmed by a second-order factor model. 展开更多
