Understanding the in situ stress state is crucial in many engineering problems and earth science research. The present article presents new insights into the interaction mechanism between the stress state and faults. In situ stresses can be influenced by various factors, one of the most important being the existence of faults.A fault could significantly affect the value and direction of the stress components.Reorientation and magnitude changes in stresses exist adjacent to faults and stress jumps/discontinuities across the fault.By contrast, the change in the stress state may lead to the transformation of faulting type and potential fault reactivation.Qualitative fault reactivation assessment using characteristic parameters under the current stress environment provides a method to assess the slip tendency of faults. The correlation between in situ stresses and fault properties enhances the ability to predict the fault slip tendency via stress measurements, which can be used to further refine the assessment of the fault reactivation risk.In the future, stress measurements at greater depths and long-term continuous real-time stress monitoring near/on key parts of faults will be essential. In addition, much attention needs to be paid to distinguishing the genetic mechanisms of abnormal stress states and the type and scale of stress variations and exploring the mechanisms of pre-faulting anomaly and fault reactivation. 展开更多

The existing LCC-HVDC transmission project adopts the fixed-time delay restarting method. This method has disadvantages such as non-selectivity,long restart process, and high probability of restart failure. These issues cause a secondary impact on equipment and system power fluctuation. To solve this problem,an adaptive restarting method based on the principle of fault location by current injection is proposed.First,an additional control strategy is proposed to inject a current detection signal.Second, the propagation law of the current signal in the line is analyzed based on the distributed parameter model of transmission line. Finally,a method for identifying fault properties based on the principle of fault location is proposed. The method fully considers the influence of the long-distance transmission line with earth capacitance and overcomes the influence of the increasing effect of the opposite terminal.Simulation results show that the proposed method can accurately identify the fault properties under various complex fault conditions and subsequently realize the adaptive restarting process. 展开更多

Fuzzy mathematics is an important means to quantitatively evaluate the properties of fault sealing in petroleum reservoirs. To accurately study fault sealing, the comprehensive quantitative evaluation method of fuzzy mathematics is improved based on a previous study.First, the single-factor membership degree is determined using the dynamic clustering method, then a single-factor evaluation matrix is constructed using a continuous grading function, and finally, the probability distribution of the evaluation grade in a fuzzy evaluation matrix is analyzed. In this study, taking the F1 fault located in the northeastern Chepaizi Bulge as an example, the sealing properties of faults in different strata are quantitatively evaluated using both an improved and an un-improved comprehensive fuzzy mathematics quantitative evaluation method.Based on current oil and gas distribution,it is found that our evaluation results before and after improvement are significantly different. For faults in"best"and"poorest"intervals, our evaluation results are consistent with oil and gas distribution. However, for the faults in"good"or"poor"intervals, our evaluation is not completelyconsistent with oil and gas distribution. The improved evaluation results reflect the overall and local sealing properties of target zones and embody the nonuniformity of fault sealing, indicating the improved method is more suitable for evaluating fault sealing under complicated conditions. 展开更多

In order to improve the bidirectional associative memory(BAM) performance, a modified BAM model(MBAM) is used to enhance neural network(NN)’s memory capacity and error correction capability, theoretical analysis and experiment results illuminate that MBAM performs much better than the original BAM. The MBAM is used in computer numeric control(CNC) machine fault diagnosis, it not only can complete fault diagnosis correctly but also have fairly high error correction capability for disturbed Input Information sequence. Moreover MBAM model is a more convenient and effective method of solving the problem of CNC electric system fault diagnosis. 展开更多

In this study, under the assumption that the two huge leveling deformation anomalies at Linfen seismic station were caused by the Luoyunshan fault( Tumen-Yuli section)movement, we computed the vertical deformation field distribution based on the rectangular fault dislocation model and measured the ground deformation field of the study area using D-InS AR technology. The results are as follows:( 1) Theoretically, the ground vertical deformation field caused by fault movement could be within the elliptical deformation area with the long axis parallel to the fault strike. The largest deformation region is located in the center of the area in the hanging wall of the fault, and the deformation gradually decreases to zero toward the periphery; the impact range induced by the two deformations is respectively as follows: The long axes are about 18 km and26km,the short axes are about 12 km and 17 km and the obvious deformation amplitude is about 1- 3mm and 4- 14 mm.( 2) The measured deformation field by D-InS AR shows that there is no continuous deformation area consistent with the fault strike, and only the presence of land subsidence possibly caused by groundwater excessive exploitation, with the deformation amplitude about 10- 12 mm and 1- 5mm.( 3) The measured deformation field is not consistent with the theoretical result on deformation area and amplitude, which indicates that the fault movement is not the main cause of Linfen huge leveling deformation, but may rather be because of local deformation of the soil layers in the hanging wall of the fault.( 4) By combining the fault dislocation model simulation with the D-InS AR technology measurement,we can determine effectively the nature of the anomalyof the huge cross-fault leveling deformation, thus provide scientific basis for verification of significant leveling anomalies. 展开更多

The M_(w)7.3 Sarpol Zahab earthquake that occurred in the Zagros Fold-Thrust Belt(ZFTB) of Iran on November 12,2017 is the largest earthquake instrumentally recorded in the region. This earthquake provides an opportunity to investigate the slip behaviour and frictional properties of the fault, which is significant for assessing future seismic potential. In this study,we use Sentinel-1 images to map the coand post-seismic deformation to invert for the fault slip. The result indicates that most of the coseismic slip is buried in the depth range of 11-17 km,and the maximum slip is about 3.8 m at a depth of 15 km.The coseismic slip induces an increase of Coulomb stress in the unruptured area of the seismogenic fault plane, driving the afterslip.Based on the stress-driven afterslip,we obtain a frictional parameter of(ab)=(0.001-0.002) for the updip afterslip zone and(a-b)=0.0002 for the downdip afterslip zone in the framework of rate-and-state friction. The constitutive parameter(a-b) of the fault is very small, suggesting that the fault segments are close to velocity-neutral and may experience coseismic rupture. 展开更多
