This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of feed conditioners(single-layer, double-layer and retentionconditioner) on the growth performance, meat quality and intestinal morphology of pigs throughout the growing to finishing phase. A total of 96 growing pigs((28.70±3.20) kg) were selected and randomized into three treatment groups with four replicates per group. Eight pigs were used per replicate for the 17-week feeding trial. The grower diet was given at 0 to 6 weeks and a finisher diet was given at 6 to 17 weeks. The treatments were as follows: SC diet(control; single-layer conditioning), DC diet(double-layer conditioning), and RC diet(retention-conditioning). Starch gelatinization was significantly higher(P<0.05) in the RC treatment than in the SC treatment, however, there was no significant difference in the starch gelatinization between the DC group and the RC group. In the growing phase, the feed to gain index(F:G) was significantly lower(P<0.05) in the RC group than in the SC and DC groups. Between growing and finishing, the F:G was the lowest(P<0.05) in the SC group compared to the RC or DC group. Drip loss, a measurement of meat quality, was significantly lower(P<0.05) in longissimus dorsi tissue collected from pigs fed the RC diet than in tissues collected from pigs fed the SC diet. The intestinal quality of the duodenum and jejunum tissues showed a significant increase(P<0.05) in the crypt depth and villus height in the RC group compared to the SC-or DC-treated pigs. These results demonstrated that the retentionconditioner treatment decreased the F:G in growing pigs, improved intestinal morphology and enhanced the meat quality in the finishing pigs. However, the retention-conditioner treatment had a negative impact on growth performance in the finishing pigs. 展开更多

Insects or algae are considered future solutions to substitute imported feed proteins like soybean meal (SBM) in animal nutrition. The objective of this research, as part of the multidisciplinary project “Sustainability transitions”, focused on replacing 50% SBM by partly defatted larvae meal from black soldier flies (Hermetia illucens) or the blue-green algae Spirulina platensis in meat type chicken diets. The current study aimed to evaluate the effects on body composition, protein quality, apparent precaecal digestibility (apcD) and parameters of intestinal microbiota. In total, 288 one-day-old male growing chickens (Ross 308) from a commercial hatchery were randomly allotted to 48 pens (6 birds per pen) across five diets, which were fed at a free choice level. The control diet utilized SBM, wheat and corn as main ingredients, and experimental diets replaced 50% of SBM by the alternative proteins under study. Amino acid (AA) supplementation of the final diets was conducted both at a basic level (diets HM, SM;Lys and Met added equal to the control diet) and an extended level of AA fortification (diets HM+, SM+;extended supplementation of Lys, Met, Thr, Arg). After finishing the growth study, 4 individual birds per diet were slaughtered for whole body analyses to derive nutrient utilization and dietary protein quality parameters. Additionally, pooled chyme samples from 16 birds per diet (control, HM and SM) were analyzed to assess apcD and microbial parameters. Diets HM and SM with a basic level of AA fortification led to significant depressions in nutrient deposition and dietary protein quality. However, HM+ and SM+ diets with an extended level of AA supplementation led to significantly improved responses;however these were still generally not on par with the control diet. The HM+ diet provided superior CP deposition and dietary protein quality, as compared to the SM+ diet, but equal to the control diet. Results of gut microbiology yielded no significant effects due to feeding the alternative protein sources under study. 展开更多

[ Objective] The research aimed to improve the utilization ratio of wheat strew in Qinghai Province. [ Method] During wheat straw microstorage, the pH, crude protein (CP), crude fiber (CF), ether extract (EE) and water content in wheat strew at different micro-storage periods were determined. The effects of micro-storage time on the quality of wheat strew were studied and evaluated by using gas production technique in vitro. [Result] pH in each test group gradually decreased with the micro-storege time, which was all significantly lower than that in control group (P 〈0.01 ). CP content in all test groups increased with the micro-storage time, which was all higher than that in control group. CF content in all test groups decreased with the h^icro-storage time, significantly lower than that in control group ( P 〈 0.01 ). EE content in all experimental groups showed a gradual increase trend with the micro-storege time, which was all higher than that in control group, without significant difference compared with control group (P〉0.05). Water content in test groups went down with the micro-storage time. With the increase of micro-storage time, net gas production, dry matter degradability, organic matter degradability, digestible energy and metabolizable energy went up gradually. [ Conclusion] Comprehensively considering the micro-storege effect of wheat strew in each period and actual production application, we suggest that 22-day micro-storege for wheat straw could meet the demand of actual production. 展开更多

[Objective] The paper was to increase utilization rate of roughage to solve current shortage of forage and improve production performance of Simmental cow.[Method] Fruit-flavored agent and green pigment were added in roughage of Simmental cow respectively, and their effects on feed intake, milk production and milk quality of Simmental cow were studied.[Result] After adding fruit-flavored agent and green pigment, the feed intakes of Simmental cow were increased by 30.69% and 12.27%,while the milk productions were increased by 1.74 and 2.25 kg,respectively, and the differences were all significant(P 〈 0.05).[Conclusion]Adding 0.3% and 0.1% fruit-flavored agent and green pigment in roughage of Simmental cow could significantly improve feed intake and milk production, which can also delay the decline of milk production during late lactation stage and improve milk quality. 展开更多
